ONGAONGA SCHOOL NEWSLETTER – 25 TH JULY 2018 - TERM 3 - WEEK 1

Greetings to the Ongaonga School Community.

Nga mihi nui ki a Koutou Welcome Jaxon and Maggie to Ongaonga school. Welcome back to term three full of many exciting activities including these major events; 7-a-side, cross country, technology challenge, Mathletics, Education Review and Ngati Whai. Effort and Empathy Effort and empathy are our school values we will focus on for term three. We are striving for excellence, so our best effort is required to work towards this aspiration. Giving everything a go. Having empathy towards others makes you a positive citizen, a contributor to friendships and community. Our big idea for learning in term three is Significance and the learning context is our Taonga, the special treasures and gifts we have at home and school. Incorporating the Taonga of our term such as our 7-a-side and understanding its importance, how it has changed over time and the significance of the various aspects of the day. Agri-Kids Another great Ongaonga School achievement. Leah, Sophie and Hamish placed 14th at the Agri-Kids Nationals. In context, there are 1,951 Primary Schools able to enter so we are in the top 1% of achievers for New Zealand. Not only was the result amazing but our team work, perseverance and communication were fantastic despite the weather conditions. A huge thank you to parents and those who helped teach our team. Many extra hours of learning outside of school time in many varied locations to learn the many

facets of modern day agricultural knowledge and fundraising to get to the event in Invercargill. Many thanks to Miss McIlroy and Mrs Beamish for making this happen. Congratulations team. Lamb and Calf Day With Bovine Mycoplasma concerns, previous low numbers of animal entries, the disconnect between the school event and Show Day we will not be having a Lamb and Calf Day this year. As Agri Kids can involve all our students, has a challenge to reach regional representation, and can include a specialised animal entry component, we are considering creating a school Agri Kids event instead. 7 A Side 8 August is rushing around quickly. We are working hard to get everything ready for the day. We do need help with; BBQ cooks, score keepers, in the food tent, making burgers, food preparation before the event, sales of food, pick up of equipment before and after the event, return of equipment and a pack up crew. A member of the SSG may be contacting you shortly requesting specific help that we need to make the day a success. The wheelbarrow raffle is needing donations as it sits in the school office looking rather empty. Many thanks for your ongoing support. Congratulations to Robbie who was awarded Kiwi for being nice in the playground, Christina who was awarded Kakapo for always being respectful and thoughtful in the playground and being great at dance, Sam who was awarded Hoiho for his great attitude in the playground and Hamish C who was

awarded Takahe for having a great week and his good Haka. Well done everyone! We hope that you all had a fantastic time over the holidays, we cant wait to find out what you have all been up to!

Ongaonga Hall Annual General meeting

Wednesday 1st August 2018 at 7pm In the Hall Supper Room

Callum and Kiwi had a great time. They went down to the river but Kiwi was far too scared to cross the river. They played with the sheep and goats and rode motorbikes. Kiwi had the best time and had so much fun. Kiwi found it rather funny and laughed hard as they saw a truck nearly get stuck on the rocks.

Sam and Takahe had a great week.

Charlie and Kakapo had the best time! They had loads of fun at home. Charlie had rugby on the weekend and Dylan came to watch with Kakapo, Charlie scored a try and got player of the day! They stayed up late.

Mayjor and Hoiho had a busy time. They watched Mayjor’s brothers play rugby, played fortnight and rode motorbikes together and had a tasty breakfast.

Welcome to Jaxon Lawrence who joins Room 4 and Maggie Trotter who joins Room 1. A very warm

welcome to Mickey & Clem Trotter and Tracy & Mark to the Ongaonga school community.

7 A-Side Wheelbarrow Raffle

Netball Results: No Netball played. Semi finals for Intermediate netball will be on the 18th August and finals will be on the 25th August. Unfortunately due to having 9 teams in the Intermediate grade, the 9th placed team after the 11th of August games, will NOT have any more games.

Ongaonga 7-A-Side Teams

All students participating in the Ongaonga 7-A-Side teams will need to organise a pair of navy shorts to play in, shirts will be provided.

Netball players will have tunics provided. Rugby players will need mouthguards (no boots

required). Hockey players will need mouthguards, shin pads and appropriate shoes. Football players

will need shinpads, football socks and boots. Netball players will need sneakers. Please

organise this before Monday the 6th of August, no equipment, no play.
