ONGAONGA SCHOOL NEWSLETTER – 1ST AUGUST 2018 - TERM 3 - WEEK 2
Greetings to the Ongaonga School Community.
Nga mihi nui ki a Koutou Effort and Empathy, term 3 values. Thank you for the great effort; -by our SSG and school staff for organising the Ongaonga 7-a-side tournament. -to support positive communication by ensuring understanding of the intended message by speaking to the source of the communication. -by contributing to our 7-a-side wheelbarrow raffle. -for our 7-a-side sponsors. -by our students in preparing for the 7-a-side powhiri. It is looking and sounding impressive. 7 -A-Side One week to go until one of the highlights of the CHB sporting calendar on 8 August, the Ongaonga School 7-a-side Tournament. It is a spectacular day of sport with the bonus of delicious food. NZEI At this stage the negotiation for teachers and principals’ employment contracts have not reached settlement. The major concerns are attracting and maintaining quality teachers in the profession and the need for more staffing and resourcing to support all children, particularly those with additional learning needs. The teachers’ union,
NZEI, has informed the government that teachers and principals will go on strike on 15 August if settlement can not be reached. The Board of Trustees is likely to decide that the school will shut while the strike is on due to health and safety factors. Teachers and principals do not want to disrupt the teaching and learning at our school however we are very limited in the ways we can show how important the issues are. We appreciate your understanding and support of Ongaonga School and hope the mediation will resolve the issues, so the industrial action does not need to occur. Ineligible Bus Users Go Bus are contracted by the Ministry of Education to transport eligible students to their closest school. As part of the annual bus review by the MOE, Go Bus are required to get a signed Ineligible Student Transport Agreement. You are ineligible if you are living out of zone or too close to the school and there may be a cost to use the bus. Please collect or request a form from the school office if your child/ren are ineligible bus users, sign it and return it to the school office. A final thought, “If I can not do great things. I can do small things in a great way” Martin Luther King Jnr. Aaron West Principal

Robbie and Kiwi had a great time. They played hide and seek & catch the Kiwi! Kiwi fell asleep in Robbie’s bag whilst he had soccer practice. They went to Robbie's grandparent's house, played on the computer, baked some scones with Robbie's dad then the family came over and ate them all. Kiwi loved meeting his twin Ewi.
Takahe and Hamish C had a great week.
Christina and Kakapo had a great time at Christina’s Dad’s house. Kakapo even got to stay in bed! They watched the boys play rugby on Saturday and had a great trip to Taupo.
Sam and Hoiho had a busy week. Hoiho went to Hockey with Sam but they unfortunately lost their game. They went to Taupo for a few days which was great fun! They got to ride Dad’s new motorbike . On the way home a Turkey flew into the wing mirror, smashing it!
