At Frenchville we are very proud of our participation in community events. Our next event, and one of the most solemn on the calendar, is ANZAC Day. At Frenchville we join with our community to honour the ANZAC legend and the selfless acts of bravery of all who have served in war. Later in the year our senior students continue their learning at the War Memorial in Canberra on Year Six Camp, and the grounding they have been given at Frenchville and from their family over the years is on display at the Last Post Ceremony, which honours the Australians who have given their lives in war. This ceremony is live streamed and family members can watch it at home.

The ANZAC Day Ceremony for Years 1–6 will be held on Monday 24 April at 9:00am in the School Activity Centre. Parents and Caregivers are welcome to attend. The Senior Choir will be singing in the ceremony. Choir members are required to wear their full performance uniform for this event.

Parents are asked to double check that children are buckled in and belted up before pulling away from the kurb at pick up time. Yes, the stop, drop and go zone is busy but not so busy that we don’t want you to take the time to double check your children are restrained in their seat belts.

We were all very disappointed that Cyclone Debbie’s aftermath meant we missed out on some amazing science activities late last term. This event will most likely be rescheduled for Monday 29/5/17 and our free dress will also be held on the same day. This is the same week we have Questacon visiting our school and also the ICAS Science

Competition, making it a Super Science Week.

The new date for the postponed dance party is Friday 5 May 2017. The theme will again be "GREEN". Tickets bought for the postponed event will be valid for this event. If you are unable to attend on this new date there are two options available to you. You can either keep the ticket for the term four dance party, or alternatively, apply in writing for a refund. Simply write a quick note requesting a refund, addressed to the P&C, and place it in an envelope with your name, contact details, child’s name and class, as well as the tickets you are seeking to refund. Bring the envelope to the office and it will be passed onto P&C. Refunds will be made in cash, but we must have the written letter for an audit trail and all tickets must be returned before a refund can be issued.

If you initially missed out on tickets, there will be an opportunity to buy tickets to the 5/5/17 dance party in the week of the event.

Reading Knights

Reading Knights is a great reading incentive scheme and a homegrown Frenchville innovation. Regular reading through the Reading Knights program allows students to explore, appreciate and enjoy the English language while experiencing a wide range of literary texts. The Reading Knights Program further aims to develop positive character qualities and work habits in students such as goal setting, determination and perseverance.

As Frenchville students progress through the various levels of reading nights, as stipulated below, they will receive tokens of achievement.

25 nights

50 nights

100 nights

150 nights

200 nights

The number of reading nights must be recorded on the appropriate recording sheet and verified by an adult. Once successfully achieving the Knight Master level, students will again work their way through the various levels of reading nights (ie. Page Apprentice Squire etc.) for the next colour stage (see table above). We encourage all readers to get involved. Mums and Dads, thanks for encouraging our readers and your children to read every night.

NAPLAN Online Trial has been delayed by the State Gov ernment

Education Minister Kate Jones has confirmed Queensland state schools will withdraw from the NAPLAN online testing trial this year. Ms Jones made the announcement ahead of the Education Ministerial Council meeting in Hobart. “I have always said that I would not commit Queensland students to participate in the online NAPLAN tests if they were not ready,” she said. “I simply cannot commit to a system that might disadvantage our students. We need to be 100 per cent certain that the online tests are good to go.

Ms Jones said all Queensland state school students would sit trad itional paper-based tests for NAPLAN this year, to be held between 9 and 11 May.

As you are aware Frenchville was one of 68 state schools scheduled to participate in the 2017 NAPLAN online trial. As this trial has been delayed, our students will now sit the tests in the traditional way using paper and pencil. We have put in place processes this week to ensure our students are familiar with the traditional test paper formats to support in their preparations for the NAPLAN testing program in May.

We will continue to implement our current curriculum programs ensuring students are developing paper and digital skills in literacy and numeracy. We understand that the Minister has made this decision to put the best interests of our students first. NAPLAN tests are constructed to give students an opportunity to demonstrate skills they have learned over time through the school curriculum, and NAPLAN test days should be treated as just another routine event on the school calendar.

The school will ensure that the students are familiar with the test formats prior to the tests so the best way you can help your child prepare for NAPLAN is to reassure them that NAPLAN tests are just one part of their school program, and urge them to simply do the best they can on the day.
