Issue 04 – 18 March 2021

Frenchville State School acknowledges the Darumbal people as the traditional custodians of the

place we now call our school. We pay our respects to the Elders past and present and are proud to

be supporting and encouraging emerging Indigenous leaders every day.

At times, our students need to ignore the behaviour of other

students, or talk to them in a friendly way or more firmly

depending on the situation. The situation may require them to

walk away. An example of this is when, during play, the student

becomes too heated and agitated they need to walk away, have

a drink and calm before re-entering the game. There is also the

strategy of REPORT. One of the difficulties we face as a school is

when students do not report incidents and go home and report.

As a parent, please talk through these strategies with your child.

You will need to model them and practise them constantly for

students to use them with ease. Please continue to work with

your child to report incidents on the day.

Most of the incidents that occur at school are ‘one off’ mean

moments or conflict between friends. In today’s world most

incidents are labelled as bullying but, in reality, it is often one of

the other. We do take any reports of bullying seriously and

investigate. Further information of the bullying process is

available in our Student Code of Conduct available on our

website.

2021 Cross CountryOur annual Cross Country will be held on Tuesday 30 March

during the morning session. Students will have a choice to

enter either a Cross Country fun race or a championship race.

The fun race is for students from year 3 to year 6 wanting to

participate without the expectation of being competitive.

Students who are 9, 10, 11 and 12 years old will have the

opportunity to run competitively in the championship race.

The 9 and 10 year olds will run 2km and the 11 and 12 year

olds will run 3km. Every student must participate in one of the

races outlined above unless advised otherwise due to medical

reasons.

Nominations

Students will need to nominate during PE lessons to participate

in the championship race. During PE lessons, students will need

to demonstrate their ability to effectively run long distances

and attend before school training or training outside of school.

Parents are reminded this event is part of the Health and

Physical Education curriculum for this term. Please ensure your

child wears either the schools broad-brimmed hat or bucket

Single-Use Plastics BanSingle-use plastics are a serious problem for the environment

and students in our school know that full well. Around 300

million tonnes of plastic waste are produced every year and

about half of all plastic is designed to be used only once and

then thrown away. The Palaszczuk Government has introduced

legislation to ban specific single-use plastics, beginning with

straws, stirrers, cutlery, plates and polystyrene takeaway food

containers and cups commencing from 1 September 2021.

Single-use plastic items that are an integral part of packaging

(such as a straw attached to a juice box) will not be banned.

The ban also provides for people with temporary or permanent

disability and healthcare needs in our community to still be able

to access single-use plastics. Schools will also be able to access

single-use plastic items should any students have similar needs.

Our community has embraced the introduction of the

Container Refund Scheme and the ban on single-use plastic

bags, and we are taking the next step.

We can embrace sustainable alternatives, including paper

straws, bamboo cutlery, paper plates and reusable stirrers.

Curriculum UpdatesAs we near the end of Term 1, teachers are starting to

gather evidence of learning. Some of this is summative (to

report to parents on) and some is diagnostic (to inform the

next steps in teaching). As part of this process, teachers are

spending after-school meetings moderating student work

samples in English. This involving ensuring consistency of

judgement across the cohort. Students are also given

feedback on written and oral assessment pieces of how to

improve their next piece of work.

Literacy LiftingChoosing books for children can be difficult particularly for

students who don’t enjoy reading. It is really important to

keep trying. Sometimes children will find things appealing

that we as adults don’t rate or think are suitable. Students

that struggle with reading might engage with a comic style

book or graphic novel. Many traditional stories are now

being produced as graphic novels alongside a number of

great new authors/illustrators in this field. At Frenchville, we

are slowly increasing our collection and they can be easily

identified on the shelves by their pink tag.

For the reluctant reader, a graphic novel may be

the first step in enjoyable engagement of your

child in print.

Library News - Lunchtime Activities

The library at FSS, located within the TWiST building, is a

cool and interesting place to be at lunchtime. As well as our

special Hogwarts-themed activities, there are lots of other

activities. Tuesdays and Thursdays are Tech Days where

students with BYOx laptops may use them. Some old iPads

are also available on this day for students to improve their

device skills. We also offer one day a week where a huge

range of board games (purchased by Student Council 2019)

are available to use. Colouring in, construction play, dolls,

puppets are also available daily as well as a quiet corner to

read in.

TWiSTed TalesBook ClubMost of Issue 1 Book Club has arrived and been distributed

to classrooms. There are a few back orders and missing

items and they will be given to students as soon as they

arrive.

Knightly TalesReading Knights counts the number of nights that students

read – this is to encourage the development of reading as an

everyday habit. We encourage a minimum of 10 minutes of

reading / sharing of stories. Each night that your child reads

should be recorded in their Reading Knights booklet.

Completed pages need to come to the TWiST to be recorded

and badges given out.

NumeracyGames with Playing Cards - Make 10Use a deck of playing cards (remove picture cards).

The aim is to make combinations that add to 10.

•One player deals out 10 cards in a row.

•The first player then looks across the row of cards to find a

combination of cards that add to 10. (Any number of cards is

allowed eg 6+4, 7+A+2)

•Only one combination can be removed. The aim of the

game is to collect as many cards as possible, so combinations

that require more cards are favoured.

•Once a combination has been removed, the dealer replaces

those cards with new ones from the pack.

•Play continues until there are no more cards or until

players can no longer make combinations that add to 10.

•Players then count their cards to determine the winner.

Hogwarts HappeningsStudents are currently enjoying the lunchtime activities.

Word of the Week:

Week 6 - brandished - Our sentence winner was Cameron B

with this amazing sentence: Harry brandished the sword of

Gryffindor at the basilisk.

Potion Making Competition:

Create a magic potion worthy of Hogwarts.

Submit your potion recipe and what it is used for. Samples of

potions may also be submitted – be as crazy and creative as

you like. Entries will be judged Monday 29th March and

prizes will be given out on Wednesday 31st March at

Science Day.

It has been a rocking great time for

the Year 5 and 6 students as they

The Year 5 and 6 students have enjoyed

exploring a variety of rhythm structures

and are busy composing their own 16

beat rhythms to perform with

percussion instruments.

Year 2 students are loving working together

to analyse and record basic rhythms from

songs that they know.
