This year our nation will commemorate one of our most important historical events. The ANZAC legend has shaped
our nation like no other event before it or since. One hundred years is a vital occasion to pass on the significance
of remembering all of our brave servicemen and women, of then and now to today’s generations. For it is those
who made the ultimate sacrifice who have made Australia the great, free nation that it is today. We owe it to those
who went before to stop, remember and say thank you for another one hundred years. I would like to express my
appreciation to the Centenary of ANZAC Hills Community Committee and the advisory board whose dedication
to this cause has been unwavering. In particular, the chair Colonel Don Tait OAM (Retired), for his boundless
determination. Through all of us the ANZAC legacy will live on.

Like most young Australians, I learned about the ANZAC Day landing at Gallipoli while at Primary School. I admire
what these young Australians did for us and our nation. That their Spirit of ANZAC lives on today is testimony to
their enormous courage and bravery.
The Hills Centenary of ANZAC Committee have done a tremendous job organising a series of events to
commemorate 100 years since Australia entered World War I and I congratulate them for the hard work and effort
that has been made to make the events’ program come together.
I encourage you to get involved and remember the sacrifices that the many brave men and women of the Australian
and New Zealand Armed forces have made over the last 100 years of service to our two great nations.

On 25th April 1915 young Australian soldiers went over the sides of ships and landed at Gallipoli. The Centenary of
ANZAC honours and remembers them for what they did for us.
This Centenary is not about war but the effects that the Gallipoli campaign had on Australia. Through their bravery
and sacrifice our young soldiers put Australia on the world stage and we became a nation. They left us a legacy
of the ANZAC Spirit that included mateship and team work; attributes that have been, are and will continue to be
Australian characteristics that make us a strong society and a united nation today. We thank the ANZACs for what
they did for us 100 years ago.

2015 Centenary of ANZAC Australia Day Flag Ceremonies at Castlebrook Memorial Park and the Castle Hill Cemetery have placed Australian Flags by about one hundred (100) Castle Hill RSL sub-Branch members on the graves and into the commemoration walls where veterans and ex-service personnel from across the Electorate of Mitchell are interned to remember their service to the Australian nation in WW1 and subsequent
wars and conflicts. Both cemeteries have been covered in flags and the community have seen how veterans and ex-service personnel are remembered by their mates even though most of them were unknown to them.
If there are WW1 veterans buried in the Castle Hill Cemetery large Australian flags were put onto their graves.
The Citizens’ Competition is to write a poem on ANZAC themes. It was launched through the media of The Hills in April 2014. The competition is being done in conjunction
with local media and the winners will be announced at the Centenary of ANZAC Civic Lunch on 21 April 2015.

Primary/Secondary Schools’ involvement in the Centenary of ANZAC began with briefings for all schools at a launch at the Castle Hill Country Club. The brief covered:• 560 WW1 Veterans’ High School Research Project
(Invitations to participate in the project in Term Three 2014, names of veterans distributed to schools for the project and Flag March in Term Four 2014, and project commences and completed in Term One 2015),

Sites’ Tours (Conducted during Terms One and Two 2015 by appointment with the Castle Hill RSL sub-Branch).
The launch was a morning tea for about 100 schools principals and presidents of schools’ parent groups.
Fleet Re-enactment at Albany, WA of the sailing of the fleet to the Middle East in November 2014 has been filmed by four members of the Castle Hill RSL sub-Branch including a War Correspondent. They flew to Perth, drove to Albany, were accommodated in Albany, filmed the re-enactment of the fleet sailing to the Middle East, drove
back to Perth and flew back to Sydney. Film equipment was transported by road. On return to Sydney the crew will produce DVDs of the re-enactment and send them to schools, libraries, historical companies, Australian War Memorial, et.al.

The Youth Ambassadors from The Hills primary schools have been announced (see photo). These Ambassadors will play an important part in the Centenary of ANZAC Sunday Commemoration Service on 19 April 2015 through accompanying the twenty-one Gallipoli Veteran Year 11 flag carriers on the march and the reading of an ANZAC poem during the Service. They will lay wreaths made by them at the Centenary of ANZAC Dawn Commemoration Service.

The Primary Schools’ Disabled and Students’ Tours will be launched at the Castle Hill RSL Club. The Centenary of ANZAC World War One: Hills Community Memories will be positioned in the foyer of the Castle Hill RSL Club so that 35,000 RSL Club members will have the opportunity to see it and be reminded that it is the Centenary of ANZAC year. This display will include Sir Roden Cutler’s dress uniform, medals, awards and sword, and WW1 photographs and other WW1 memorabilia from the Hills community.

The Centenary of ANZAC Lego Display of WW1 scenes will be located in the entrance foyer of the Castle Hill RSL Club. The Sydney Lego Users Group will build six display models with the theme of “War to Peace” as follows:
1. Recruiting Centre – marchers arrive.2. Women do men’s work.3. The fleet concentrates – Albany WA.4. Anzac Cove landing.5. Anzac Battle of Villiers-Bretonneux.6. Peace at Bullecourt, France
The building of the models will be watched by the younger generations from the Hills.
The six Centenary of ANZAC Lego models having been built at the Castle Hill RSL Club will be displayed at the Club, Castle Towers, Rouse Hill Town Centre and Powerhouse Discovery Centre. The dates, other than for the Castle Hill RSL Club, will be advised through the Castle Hill RSL Club’s and Centenary websites, Facebook and the local media.

The Launch of the Centenary of ANZAC Week for The Hills will be officially opened by His Excellency General The Honourable David Hurley AC DSC (Ret’d), Governor of New South Wales. Armoured vehicles from a museum, light military vehicles from various associations, a Light Horse Troop, military, pipe and other bands, singing groups, kids’ fun area, food stalls, etc. will be the backdrop to this launch at one of Australia’s earliest homestead sites. It will set the scene for an extraordinary week of events and activities for the community of The Hills. Its theme is “A family day at the Farm, the Centenary of ANZAC Launch”. The planning is for 10,000 attendees.

Centenary of ANZAC Sunday Commemoration Service is for all veterans, ex-serving and serving Defence Force personnel, youth groups, sporting teams and school leadership groups of The Hills and the general public. It will be held at the Centenary of ANZAC Reserve, Castle Hill. 561 Year 11 students, each with an Australian flag with the name of a WW1 veteran on it, will lead the march (The name on the flag for each student will be the one that the student has researched as part of a project to get information on our WW1 veterans and descendants). It is anticipated that 7 to 8,000 people will attend. A large digital screen will be used so that all attendees can see the Service.
1st/15th RNSWL Band and Catafalque Party, the Castle Hill RSL Pipe Band, the Baulkham Hills High School Cadet Unit, Police, SES, youth groups, ambulance personnel and others participate.
The Centenary of Sunday ANZAC address will be delivered by Major General Paul Symon AO.
Parking areas are being sought at a school, a TAFE College and the Department of Education land opposite the Centenary of ANZAC Reserve. These arrangements together with street parking around the Reserve at Wrights Road will provide parking for about 7,000 people. Please do not park in the Kellyville Plaza or Aldi car parks.

The Centenary of ANZAC Commemoration Lunch on the Centenary of ANZAC Sunday will be conducted at the Castle Hill RSL Club. It is to be attended by the VIP’s and senior Defence Force personnel who have attended the ANZAC Sunday Service, Castle Hill RSL sub-Branch members, community leaders, school principals and their leadership groups, representatives from various organisations in The Hills and other invited guests. It is anticipated that about 250 people will attend.
The lunch address will be given by Major General Paul Symon AO.

The Centenary of ANZAC Organ WW1 Music Rendition and 1812 Overture is an evening event during the Centenary Week and will be dedicated to all WW1 diggers from The Hills. An hour of an Organ playing sheet music from WW1 will be the prelude to the 1812 Overture. The Organ will be positioned on the porch of the old farm house with spotlights illuminating it so that the audience in the natural amphitheatre behind the Norwest Hospital can both see and hear it.
Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture rendition will be played by the Castle Hill RSL Youth Orchestra accompanied synchronise pyrotechnics at the Bella Vista Farm. It is anticipated that over 10,000 people will attend.

NAMBUS Tours during the Centenary Week (Briefings and displays) will be done for Year 10 students who will be studying the Vietnam War; curriculum support to the high schools of The Hills District. This bus has been used by schools throughout NSW and the Northern Territory for education of students on this war. There have been considerable liaison and curriculum discussions with the NAMBUS Group from the Gosford Vietnam Veterans, Peacekeepers and Peacemakers Association. Instruction will relate the Vietnam Veterans own experiences in that war and to the war in general.
NAMBUS will be located at Hills Grammar School and the other high schools in The Hills will bus their Year 10 students to that school. It is anticipated that up to 2,000 students will attend and, for other high schools unable to attend, one complete session will be filmed, placed on DVD and distributed to them.

Schools and Citizens Competitions Awards Civic Lunch will be held at Biviano’s Restaurant. It will be organised and conducted by Year 11 Centenary of ANZAC Ambassadors from The Hills’ High Schools. All competitions have as their criteria ANZAC and WW1.

The Centenary of ANZAC Kids’ Day is for the very young, for parents and for grandparents minding youngsters to be told about the ANZACs and to have the opportunity to speak to some serving and older veterans about their service. Face painting, story-telling and other entertainment are part of this day.
CENTENARY OF ANZAC KIDS’ DAY
About 400 hundred parents, grandparents and kids will attend. Six serving Defence personnel will attend to talk about their medals and experiences.

The Stage Show (The Gallipoli Letter) will be one of the features of the Centenary Week and is being conducted in the Lyceum, Castle Hill RSL Club. The show is arranged around “A letter to and from a Soldier in Gallipoli in August 1915”. It is about a young wife writing to her husband in Gallipoli and he in turn writing back to her, however, before his letter arrives from him the wife gets the “telegram”. The letters have been written by two people in The Hills and the show has a number of other features including the songs of the era and reporting from Gallipoli.

The Stage Show is about letters to and from Gallipoli in 1915.
A letter from a young wife in The Hills to her soldier husband in Gallipoli and his letter to her are the focus of the show. Intermingled through the Show are songs relevant to the era but not of it and periodically a narrator brings the audience up to date on what the situation is at Gallipoli. Towards the end of the show the young wife receives the “telegram” – which has been received by many thousands of families around Australia.
Has her husband been killed?
Angela Pike, a young local university student, plays the part of Susan, the soldier’s wife. She has grown in to this role and brings to it a sense of what it was like to be the wife of a soldier in harms way and concern as to what to write so that she does not upset her husband while trying to let him know about their daughter growing up. She is distraught to find out that her husband is probably dead; but decides to get on with life and raise their daughter.
Jeremy Bridie is a local who is a professional actor. The part of Tom, the Gallipoli soldier, complements his role in Journey’s End. In the Stage Show he is not well educated and is a typical country lad; but a good soldier who enlisted to ensure that his family could live in a safe world. His letter to his wife is full of soldier interests and requests for information about what is going on at home.
The singers are all locals and well known in The Hills. The Sister2Sister School of Singing, with Christine and Sharon Muscat will mesmerize you with their brilliant vocal renditions of “Waltzing Matilda” and “I am Australian” while Ben Finn, the owner of Maxx Music and a professional musician, adds his brilliance to “True Blue” and “I was only 19”. David Sanders, an extraordinary tenor, will sing “You raised me up” and “We will remember them”. These songs enhance the reflections on our time at Gallipoli and those left behind.
The narrator is Gareth McCray B.A., M.A., Dip.Ed., A.Mus.A., OAM, a Presenter at Radio 2CH. He provides expert and professional updates on the Gallipoli campaign throughout the Show.
The other performers are: the postman, Mike Lee, wearing an early 1900s postman’s uniform while Bill Strutton and Heather Watson play the young couple in older life.

CENTENARY OF ANZAC SCHOOLS’ SERVICES
Commemoration Swimming Carnival during the Centenary Week will be held at the C2K Fitness and Aquatic Centre, Castle Hill RSL Club. It will be conducted by the Castle Hill RSL Swimming Club and teams and individuals from the Electorate of Mitchell will participate.
Soldiers came down to the beach at Gallipoli from their trenches to pick-up ammunition, food and water and while on the beach at ANZAC Cove they took the opportunity to take a swim even though snipers were a danger. This event is linked to these soldiers and their swims. Trophies will be named after WW1 diggers from the Electorate of Mitchell who are yet to be selected.
This is another event to involve as many people from the community in the Centenary and to remind all participants that it is the Centenary of ANZAC.

CENTENARY OF ANZAC COMMEMORATION SWIMMING CARNIVAL
This Centenary of ANZAC Golf Day during the Centenary Week in the electorate will be played at the Muirfield Golf Course. This Golf Day is one of the events that remembers and thanks the 561 WW1 veterans from the Hills for their service to Australia. A remembrance service will start the day and it will conclude with a commemoration presentation dinner. Some of the veterans’ relatives are expected to play golf and they will be involved in the presentation of trophies. This is a team’s stableford event, best three scores to count per hole.

CENTENARY OF ANZAC DAWN SERVICE
Centenary of ANZAC Dawn Service is conducted at the War Memorial at the Centenary of ANZAC Reserve, Castle Hill which is opposite the Kellyville Plaza on Wrights Road. It is anticipated that 25,000 people will attend and a large digital screen will be used to allow everyone to see and be involved in the Service.
1st/15th RNSWL bugler, the Castle Hill RSL Youth Orchestra drummers, the Castle Hill RSL Pipe Band piper and 322 RAAF Cadet Catafalque Party, Police, SES, ambulance personnel and others participate.The Dawn Service address will be delivered by Brigadier Phillip Bridie AM.
Parking areas are being sought at a school, a TAFE College, the Department of Education land opposite the Centenary of ANZAC Reserve, the Kellyville Plaza and Aldi Shop. These arrangements together with street parking around the Reserve at Wrights Road will provide parking for about 10,000 people.
Buses will also be provided free of charge from parking hubs and from along a western route to the Centenary of ANZAC Reserve to move another 12,000 to 15,000 people.

Park your car at Castle Hill Showground or Rouse Hill Shopping Centre and get the free shuttle right to the reserve. Also park at Samantha Riley Drive (500 spots). The T-Way bus will also collect from the stop at Merriville – opposite the Ettamogah Hotel. Limited parking will be available near the Reserve at William Clarke College, the TAFE College, the Department of Education land opposite the Centenary of ANZAC Reserve, the Kellyville Plaza and ALDI.
