General Manager’s MessageIf you have renewed your subscription this May, so many thanks! Our annual Radiothon is such an important time for 3MBS as we raise the funds to keep us sustainable. On 1 July we will turn 40, and it is subscribers like you who

have enabled the hundreds of thousands of hours of broadcasting of wonderful music that this represents. And if you are a new subscriber and this is your fi rst copy of On Air, welcome to the family!

But if haven’t yet renewed, fear not. There is still time to be in the running for a host of wonderful prizes as part of our Radiothon Major Prize Draw, if you renew by 24 June. And one of you will soon be deciding which European Emirates destination to visit for your next holiday!

We are thrilled that, after many months of work, we are now able to offer our subscribers the chance to listen back online to your favourite programs. If you haven’t given us your email address, or haven’t yet received an email inviting you to log in, do call on 9416 1035 or email [email protected] and we will make sure you are set up to go.

And fi nally, as the end of the tax year approaches, an invitation is enclosed to anyone who has a few dollars to spare. Radio is a technology-dependent medium, and we are working at the moment to replace a number of critical pieces of equipment. If you can spare a little extra, you will support our hard-working and dedicated volunteers to bring the music that you love to you, and to many other people to whom it is critically important. Any amount, however small, will make a difference. Thank you!

“History is a pattern of timeless moments” – Mahan Esfahani

Time present and time past Are both perhaps present in time future And time future contained in time past. If all time is eternally present All time is unredeemable. What might have been is an abstraction Remaining a perpetual possibility Only in a world of speculation.

As someone who has chosen the vocation of harpsichordist as his life’s mission, I am often subjected to all sorts of assumptions about historicity and authenticity and what is right and what is wrong and what can’t belong. I see my recordings as a way of refuting all that. While planning this album, I became seriously interested in the works of T S Eliot, whose Four Quartets have been my guiding companion throughout this project.

As it happens, I came to design the program for this album while making a belated study of Minimalism – a musical style I had previously and misguidedly derided as facile. As I started to understand the great possibilities of minimalist style, my mind began to make connections to the same techniques – specifically, the manipulation of patterns and “cells” of material – as practised by composers of the 17th and 18th centuries. Over time I realized that three sets of variations on the time-honoured “Follia” melody could act as a constant in order to familiarize even the most casual listener with the basic overarching concepts defining my programming. These pieces, whether for solo harpsichord (Scarlatti and C P E Bach) or for full ensemble (Geminiani/Corelli), speak for themselves.

Górecki’s concerto, too, uses minimalist techniques, but possesses implied extra-musical dimensions that take it beyond a mere celebration of sonorities. The extended quest of the first movement’s harpsichord part to widen the melodic ambitus to a fourth, when combined with the severe texture and equally limited tonal palette in the orchestral part, suggests the futility and frustrations of life in a repressive society. The second movement opens in a spirit of joy that gives way to a Schnittke-like absurdity, which in turn acquires a crashing intensity well suited to the harpsichord.

I feel that my instrument’s particular gift for clarity is perfectly matched to Steve Reich’s iconic Piano Phase (1967). As the two lines (which I have recorded through multi-tracking) shift out of unison, the ringing effects and coincidental harmonies created by the changing intervallic gaps ring with a wide range of colours made possible by the complex network of partials inherent in harpsichord sonority. I was particularly drawn to Reich’s piece, especially in terms of the process-music derived from his early experiments with magnetic tape. The harpsichordist’s close relationship with the mechanisms of his instrument correspond to the mechanical processes that inspired Reich’s techniques. One might say that we have come, like Eliot, “to arrive where we started […] / Through the unknown, remembered gate”; we have come from the physicality of the earliest music-making to studio techniques and back again.

The rhythmic drive and absence of motivic development that attract many a listener to Minimalism are the same traits that drew J S Bach to the concertos of Vivaldi. The Venetian’s use of repetitive figurations, unhampered as it was by the strictures of contrapuntal logic, must have seemed novel and fresh. Bach saw in these cells and building blocks a way of propelling and varying the harmonic profile of a movement without drawing too much attention to thematic material. Certainly, in the first movement of the D minor Concerto the opening solo melody, completely unrelated to the orchestral introduction, is secondary to the impact of various chains of semiquavers and arpeggios that define the larger blocks of harmony. Of course, being someone whose world view required connectivity between all aspects of creation, Bach alludes to the introductory orchestral material throughout all the episodic sections. A tension between a Bachian chain of being, treating ideas exhaustively, and Vivaldi’s more Dionysian approach enriches the concerto with great expressive range.

8 On Air jun 2015 jun 2015 On Air 9

Bach used the opportunity afforded by this new genre to demonstrate the harpsichord’s many capabilities. The second movement proves it to be a truly vocal instrument. The panting of the orchestra part is perfectly matched to the rise and fall inherent in the sound of a plucked string. This vocality is no less pronounced in the third movement. It being fast, of course, the singing quality of the harpsichord is more effective in the higher registers, where the instrument acquires more desperation in its utterances. It is the strikingly majestic quality of the D minor Concerto that I seek to explore in this album, as I feel it manifests the timeless character of this music. My decision to play a cadenza by Johannes Brahms is an act of homage to the impact that Bach’s music had on later generations. Indeed, J S Bach is the one who brought me to know all music. All stems from him and returns to him:

We die with the dying: See, they depart, and we go with them. We are born with the dead: See, they return, and bring us with them. The moment of the rose and the moment of the yew-tree Are of equal duration. A people without history Is not redeemed from time, for history is a pattern Of timeless moments.

Daniel Kidane has taught me more than most that good music is, indeed, out of time and out of place.

There was once a man named Bjarne Dahl. I’d go round to his restoration workshop in northern California back in university days, almost weekly, and he taught me how to be inspired. He once gave me a book and wrote on the first page: “To Mahan – never give up!” I wish he were still around to see that my life has been a tribute to his mentoring. Bjarne – et in Arcadia ego!

Anna Goldsworthy:Piano Lessons

by Robin Usher

Anna Goldsworthy has gone a long way to resolving a personal dilemma that has persisted for more than 20 years while she established a national reputation as pianist and founding member of one of Australia’s most long-lived chamber groups, the Seraphim Trio.

But growing up she had a great passion for books and she has been torn between the two art forms, literature and music. “I grew up in a household of books and we were used to having writers such as (the poet) Les Murray staying with us when they came to Adelaide,” she says. “Books and writing have always had an important part in my life.”

Her privileged insight into the life of a writer came from her father, the acclaimed novelist and short-story writer, Peter. “I helped edit his books as a teenager and was a witness to the creative process involved in his world. There were endless bookshelves at home and there were always books to read.”

Goldsworthy’s twin passions were finally brought together through the writing of her award-winning winning memoir, Piano Lessons, about her childhood teacher, Mrs Eleanora Sivan, a Russian émigré and one of a formidable line of teachers going back to one of the greatest pianists the world has seen, Franz Liszt. “Writing this book has systemized my thinking about playing,” she says. “My musical life is much richer as a result of writing it. The dilemma has persisted since Mrs Sivan declared that music was my calling. But I now realize I cannot be without either.”

10 On Air jun 2015 jun 2015 On Air 11

But the book’s benefits do not end there – it was adapted for the stage at the suggestion of Deborah Conway, who was director of the Queensland Music Festival in 2011. After a successful premiere, the production toured Queensland in 2013 and is now coming to Melbourne as part of a tour to Adelaide, Brisbane and Portland in western Victoria. “The book and the play have clarified so many things for me,” she says. “I plan to free up my schedule after this year so that I will have more time to write.”

Goldsworthy is generous in her appreciation of the help she has received in producing both the book and the play. The original idea for the memoir came from Chris Feik at Black Inc Books, who even suggested the title in 2009. But Goldsworthy was hesitant at first, because she thought it was presumptuous for her to attempt a memoir. “But then I realized I could use it to pay tribute to my teacher. Students have a responsibility to pass on the insights of their teaching and a book is a really good way to do this.”

She gives much of the credit for the success of the stage adaption to Brisbane dramaturg Michael Futcher, who is also directing the current production. Goldsworthy appears in the production as both narrator and as her childhood self, while Mrs Sivan is played by Helen Howard. “The adaptation has brought a fundamental aspect of the book to life,” she says. “By presenting it as if the audience is attending a concert, the play makes real the anxiety and stage fright which is a large part of the story.” In performing and speaking about her performance anxieties, such as fears of a memory lapse, Goldsworthy has gone a long way to coming to terms with them.

She receives emails from around the world praising the book and the US poet laureate, Philip Levine, praised it as his book of the year, while film director Ana Kokkinos is preparing a screen treatment. Goldsworthy says there are also producers who are considering overseas productions for the play.

But she has had no time for further writing with her crowded current schedule. As well as her commitment to the Seraphim Trio, she is artistic director of the Port Fairy Spring Music Festival, research fellow at the J M Coetzee Centre for Creative Practice at the University of Adelaide, a lecturer at Elder Conservatorium, and Kenneth Moore memorial scholar at Melbourne University’s Janet Clarke Hall.

But this year, her sixth, will be her last at Port Fairy and she hopes to dedicate this freed-up time to writing. She says the Trio’s current touring schedule performing all of Beethoven’s piano trios is the group’s busiest year in its 21-year history.

“We have immersed ourselves in the language of the trios, beginning last year when we spent time in Germany with our teacher, Hatto Bayerle (from the Alban Berg Quartet). A documentary was made by 3MBS and we will be recording the music for ABC Classics before resuming our touring in August.”

She says the Trio, whose other members are Helen Ayres (violin) and Timothy Nankervis (cello) have been on an endless journey with Beethoven’s music for more than 20 years. “Every time we come back to the trios we find greater depths and an endless source of renewal,” she says. “Every time we perform on stage we change our interpretation of the pieces we are playing.”

William Hennessy

by Robin Usher

One of Melbourne’s most respected violinists and music teachers, William Hennessy, is celebrating his 60th birthday with what he calls a series of parties to which the public is invited. “It’s a big private occasion,” he says, referring to his performance of Beethoven’s Violin Concerto in a series of concerts around Victoria with the Melbourne Chamber Orchestra.

His personal milestone comes after a career spanning nearly four decades in which he has performed in 38 countries. “I have had a fantastic run and right now I am playing as well as I ever have,” he says. “If my health stays good, I think it is realistic to keep playing for another decade.”

He describes the Beethoven concerto as the big test for violinists. “There is no such thing as the right way to play it. It gives you the opportunity to be entirely yourself and all the players I love interpret it in their own way, which is a measure of the music’s greatness.” After a pause, he adds, “But there are plenty of bad ways to play it, of, course.”

He refers to a long-running debate in music circles about approaches to playing. “I have never subscribed to the idea that there is only one right way of doing things. I find it offensive because the point of music is to delight and the key to it is spontaneity.”

But he says the 20th century was the fascist era and for a long time there was an insistence there was a right way to perform. “I find that very unmusical,” he says. “You have to learn to trust yourself. More and more I am realizing that what I knew when I was young was the right approach but I was always tempted not to trust that insight.”

Hennessy has been involved with some of Australia’s leading chamber groups as a player and teacher. He was the founding leader of the Adelaide-based Australian String Quartet for 12 years until 1996 and was founding deputy leader of the Australian Chamber Orchestra in the mid-‘70s.

He was also a member of the Academy of St Martin-in-the-Fields in London and the English Chamber Orchestra. He became MCO’s concertmaster in 2003 before becoming artistic director three years later. As a teacher he was head of strings and chamber music at Melbourne University from 1997-2006 when he moved to the Australian National Academy of Music until last year. “I am enjoying myself more than I ever have,” he says. “I now have the space to think deeply about things – it is the most rewarding time. I had been involved in institutions for 30 years and that was enough.”

Hennessy has a direct connection to the Beethoven concerto through his teacher at the Sydney Conservatorium, Robert Pikler, a Hungarian who was part of Europe’s great musical tradition that connected him to the work’s first successful performance after a disastrous premiere during the composer’s lifetime. Success came in 1844, 38 years after the concerto was written. The soloist was Joseph Joachim and the conductor Felix Mendelssohn.

Joachim went on to teach Jenö Hubay, who then taught Pikler. The Hungarian came to Australia after being a prisoner of the Japanese in Indonesia in World War II and went on to become the leader of the original Musica Viva players.

“I have a wonderful connection to this teaching chain,” Hennessy says. “I know it is subjective but it remains very significant.” He continues to check his standard of playing against recordings by the great 20th century violinist, Jascha Heifetz. “I like to see how we compare by playing his different recordings made at different times of his life. That’s why I like competitions because they allow you to see where you stand.”

His general satisfaction with life extends to the MCO, which he says is enjoying its most secure period. “Last year was the busiest we have been, with more than 30 concerts around Victoria. That is a lot of music-making and travelling.”

The orchestra, which is built around a core of principal players, brings together Melbourne’s finest professional chamber musicians, allowing them to perform with the orchestra while continuing their personal musical careers at other times.

Hennessy says the MCO’s development reflects the general high standard of music-making in Melbourne. “Not many cities could match the quality of playing over a large number of ensembles. There has always been a strong love of chamber music in Melbourne but what’s new is the growth in the number of ensembles.”

14 On Air jun 2015 jun 2015 On Air 15

The MCO has also diversifi ed in the past two years with the development of the Australian Octet and the MCO Virtuosi. “The Octet can perform in places too small for the full orchestra, with a colossal repertoire that extends to everything beyond quartet writing,” he says. “The Virtuosi has a different aim of building a new audience by appealing to people who might have only three CDs of popular music on their shelves.”

Members of the Australian Octet

William Hennessy and the Melbourne Chamber Orchestra perform

Beethoven’s Violin Concerto, Haydn’s 60th Symphony, Walton’s Incidental

Music to Henry V and an arrangement of Schubert’s Quartettsatz in Deakin

Edge at 7.30pm on 13 June and at 2.30pm in the Melbourne Recital Centre on

14 June. It will also tour to Geelong, Gippsland and the Mornington Peninsula.

Around Melbourne

by Robin Usher

Hitchcock classic adapted for stage

The British adaptation of the classic Hitchcock fi lm, 39 Steps, was a hit on world stages, including the Melbourne Theatre Company about a decade ago. Now former MTC director Simon Phillips is presenting the world premiere of the adaptation of another Hitchcock classic, North By Northwest, in his return to the company.

He says large sections of the fi lm have a taut, sometimes claustrophobic intensity that is ideally suited to being transferred to the stage in an adaptation by Carolyn Burns. “But of course it’s the ‘impossible’ bits that really get the theatrical juices fl owing,” he says. “Who’d be stupid enough to try to depict on stage a man chased by a crop duster (plane)? I would.”

The story centres on an advertising executive (played by Matt Day) who is abducted by thugs in a case of mistaken identity. The tension escalates as they refuse to believe him, then try to kill him and fi nally try to pin a murder on him. Of course, he is joined by Hitchcock’s trademark “cool blonde” (Amber McMahon).

North By Northwest is at the Arts Centre Playhouse from 4 June – 4 July.

New insights into some favourite Chopin

The Russian-born pianist Nikolai Demidenko claims a special affi nity with the works of Chopin, so it is no surprise that his appearance in the Melbourne Recital Centre’s Great Performers series will be devoted to the Polish composer.

16 On Air jun 2015 jun 2015 On Air 17

The London-based Demidenko, who regularly performs around the world, is in Australia for concerts in Adelaide and Brisbane, and is the third consecutive pianist to appear in this year’s series following Paavalia Jumppanen in May and Louis Lortie the previous month, who concluded his performance with Chopin’s Preludes.

Demidenko’s interpretive insights into Chopin are well documented. He won the 2010 MIDEM special Chopin award for his recording of the Preludes and has performed at the Chopin Festival in Warsaw, as well as the 2010 Chopin birthday concert in the Polish capital.

His Melbourne program includes the Sonata No.2 and the Berceuse, as well as selected Nocturnes and Scherzos. Advanced information about the recital suggests his performance might include “some radical ideas about old friends”.

Nikolai Demidenko performs works by Chopin at the Melbourne Recital Centre at 7.30pm on 10 June.

MSO spotlight on Benjamin Britten

The British tenor Ian Bostridge is in Melbourne to take part in the MSO’s performances of Britten’s War Requiem, written for reopening of Coventry Cathedral in 1962 after the 14th century original was destroyed by German bombing in World War II. It features the famous anti-war poetry of Wilfred Owen who died in the trenches just before the end of World War I.

Bostridge is also appearing in a more intimate setting with pianist Amir Farid (who will perform Schubert’s Moments musicaux) and members of the orchestra performing a selection of Schubert’s Lieder and the Vaughan Williams song cycle On Wenlock Edge, using poems from A E Housman’s A Shropshire Lad.

Another Britten work, Variations on a Theme of Frank Bridge, will feature in a MSO concert led by the MSO’s concertmaster, Dale Barltrop, featuring two of the most celebrated selections from the baroque era, Bach’s Concerto for Two Violins and Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons.

The MSO conducted by Sir Andrew Davis performs Britten’s War Requiem at Hamer Hall on 11 & 12 June, featuring tenor Ian Bostridge and soprano Tatiana Pavlovskaya. Bostridge will also perform with pianist Amir Farid

and MSO musicians on 15 June at the Melbourne Recital Centre. MSO concertmaster Dale Barltrop leads a Baroque concert including

Vivaldi’s Four Seasons on 25 & 27 June at the MRC.

French-flavoured Isserlis

English cellist Steven Isserlis was last in Australia two years ago, touring with the Australian Chamber Orchestra. In his current appearance for Musica Viva with Canadian pianist Connie Shih, he explores the works of three French composers, as well as a composition by English composer Thomas Adès written especially for the cellist.

The Adès piece is also French-influenced, as indicated by the title, Lieux Retrouves (Remembered Places). Adès says the cello makes him dream of “elsewhere” but there is nothing dream-like about his writing. Isserlis says the piece’s finale is “the hardest I’ve ever learned”.

Saint-Saëns’ writing for the cello is most often associated with his famous excerpt The Swan from his children’s classic, Carnival of the Animals. But his first cello sonata is very different, with a gripping opening giving way to passionate storms and voyages. The second sonata by his student Fauré is a late work, noted for its beautiful, funereal slow movement and sparkling, optimistic ending.

César Franck’s sonata was originally written for the violin as a marriage gift for his friend, the violinist Eugene Ysaÿe, in 1886 and led to the composer’s recognition as a major artist. Franck sanctioned the cello version, in which the piano part remains the same.

Stephen Isserlis and Connie Shih will perform at the Melbourne Recital Centre at 7pm on 16 & 17 June.
