General Manager’s MessageA huge thanks to all who subscribed and donated

during our Radiothon. This substantial undertaking is made possible through the work of many volunteers and I thank them for their extra efforts in keeping 3MBS

ticking over during May. Radiothon is also a great opportunity to speak directly with our community of subscribers who are passionate about keeping fi ne music alive in Melbourne.

Radiothon attracted great prizes this year and congratulations to all the winners; do enjoy! We have also been delighted to partner Odyssey Travel, a fellow not-for-profi t company, to bring you the opportunity to win one of their fabulous European music-based tours. It’s still not too late to enter this major prize draw, if you are very quick!

The Federal Budget was disappointing for the community broadcasting sector across Australia with a surprising lack of commitment to digital broadcasting. 3MBS is currently supporting the Keep the Community in Your Radio campaign to ensure we have cost effective access to a digital platforms into the future – a factor that will be in the mind of the 3MBS Board during our Strategic Planning.

Highlights from our June programs include Illuminations Triumph or Tragedy: Opening Nights at the Opera, and A Musical Present for a Queen. Refl ections will include musings from the Artistic Directors of the Australian Ballet, David McAllister, and Chief Conductor of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, Sir Andrew Davis. Also check out Melbourne in Concert where we will bring you a live performance by Duo Chamber Melange from the 3MBS Lady Marigold Southey Performance Studio.

3MBS is making a difference in the lives of many individuals and supports the Melbourne music and arts communities. If you value what we do please consider, as the tax year comes to a close, that donations are tax deductable and donors of $500 or more are acknowledged as patrons. Your contribution matters.

Susan Coleman (1945-2015)

We wish to remember Susan Coleman’s

life and contributions to our world, cut

short by MND. Her family and her obvious

love of music, radio, computing and the

arts, continue to support 3MBS for which

we are very grateful.

Susan’s musical interests began with a short-lived period of piano lessons as a child and later her strong love of singing which lasted all her life. She took lessons as a lyric soprano at the Sydney “Con”, sang in the Rockdale Light Opera Company and, in later life, took lessons from Kate Sadler, performed in an annual concert and joined the U3A singing group in Doncaster, where a highlight was singing in the Melbourne Town Hall under the baton of Andrew Wailes.

Susan was a long-time subscriber of 3MBS, and an enthusiastic supporter of community music, attending student performances at the VCA, lunchtime concerts in the city and performances of local concert bands. She loved opera, subscribed to the Victorian and Australian Opera and attended Melbourne’s Ring Cycle as a “Ring Leader” in 2013.

Susan’s studies of physics and maths at the University of Sydney led her to jobs in IT when computers were in their formative years, working for Olivetti and eventually Qantas. But it was as an IT journalist that Susan found her life-defi ning work and infl uence that continues today. In California Susan, with husband Grahame and daughters Rachel and Bronwen, found herself at the cusp of the IT revolution. She began reporting for Computerworld, became editor and years later moved to Pacifi c Computer Weekly as publisher. Susan became the Vice-Chairman of the Australian Computer Society and adviser to the Department of Industry Commerce and Technology. When she left PCW she published an on-line newsletter called Coleman’s Choice.

In the mid 90s Susan took up many causes including standing for the Greens for Jaga Jaga in 1996. She advocated and lobbied councils for many environmental causes and changes. Susan edited the magazines for both Gippsland Gate Radio Club and the associated Australian Ladies’ Amateur Radio Association for several years. As recently as 2010 she studied for and obtained her full amateur radio licence. Susan lived a rich and colourful life, a defi ning feature of which was always to make the greatest contribution she could.

Texas. The Home of Chamber Music

Yes, you read that title correctly. Based in Fort Worth, the Mimir Chamber Music Festival has been listed as a “summer hotspot” in The New York Times’ Travel & Leisure magazine. From 29 August to 4 September 2016, Mimir returns to its second home at the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music, giving you the opportunity to watch some of the fi nest U.S. musicians in action.

Named for the Norse god of wisdom, Mimir was founded in 1998 by Dr Curt Thompson, now Associate Professor of Violin and Head of Strings at the Melbourne Conservatorium. “I started this festival with brothers pianist Johan and clarinettist Martin Fröst at the TCU School of Music, home of the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition. Our mission is to present chamber music of the highest international standard, and to offer an educational opportunity to aspiring pre-professional musicians of an equally high calibre,” explains Thompson.

“We are very fortunate that The University of Melbourne has embraced Mimir for its fourth Australian season, enabling the festival to present performances of the highest international standard and to provide MCM students an incredible opportunity to learn from these esteemed artists. For the third consecutive year an MCM quartet, selected by international audition, will be presented in ticketed public performances at the Mimir Texas festival.”

Musical careers in Australia divide into two categories – those who travel and those who stay home. Members of state orchestras rarely need to open their suitcases but those in the second grouping are among the country’s busiest frequent flyers. “My suitcase lives on the floor of my study always ready to be packed,” says Timo-Veikko Valve, principal cellist with the Australian Chamber Orchestra. “It’s been calculated that we spend every third night of the year away from home.”

The Finnish cellist had to travel a long way when he was appointed to the ACO in 2006 and he tries to make regular visits to his family in Helsinki. He also usually joins pianist Kathryn Selby twice a year on her national chamber music tours, a tradition that started two years after he arrived in Sydney. “It’s a lot of fun playing with Kathryn and it is revitalizing to perform with various other musicians and to be exposed to new players away from the ACO,” he says.

Valve is a versatile musician, performing as a soloist, chamber musician and orchestral leader on both modern and period instruments. He

The Mimir Chamber Music Festival is proudly supported by The University of Melbourne Conservatorium of Music. The Mimir Festival Committee, a volunteer group of music lovers headed by Ian Maclean of Yarra Yarra Vineyards, supports the festival’s future and welcomes membership.

What you can look forward to: Mimir features top performers in the most celebrated American symphony orchestras, highly respected teachers from leading conservatoires, and internationally recognized concert artists. The roster includes prizewinners at the Premio Paganini, Leeds, Indianapolis and Hannover international competitions; Grammy Award-nominated recording artists; members of the New York Philharmonic Orchestra, Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra, The Cleveland Orchestra, Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Houston Symphony Orchestra; and faculty of the Juilliard School of Music, Cleveland Institute of Music and Melbourne Conservatorium of Music.

This year’s guests are Jun Iwasaki, Concertmaster of the Nashville Symphony Orchestra; Stephen Rose, Principal Second Violinist with The Cleveland Orchestra; Curt Thompson, Head of Strings at the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music; Joan DerHovsepian, Associate Principal Violist with the Houston Symphony Orchestra and Brant Taylor, cellist with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, as well as several top local musicians.

During the week-long festival, Mimir artists will present three public performances and guide students from the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music and across the city through masterclasses, coaching and demonstrations. Named a “Top 10 Musical Event of the Year” by The Dallas Morning News eight times in a row, Mimir is not to be missed!

Valve since 2013. “He is from an older generation than me, so we did not know each other. It’s fabulous to meet a countryman on the other side of the world.”

Valve’s wider circle of friends comes from the ACO, which he joined thanks to another Finn, Satu Vänskä, who is the orchestra’s principal violinist. He received an email from her when he was 24 and had just finished his studies, asking if he was interested in joining the ACO. “I didn’t know her at all but she was making use of the Finnish Mafia to try and find a suitable cellist,” he says. “It was perfect timing for me and I thought I would try something new for a year or two. Now it’s a decade later and everything is going well.”

His partner is an ACO violinist, Liisa Pallandi, which is convenient with all the touring involved. His time with the orchestra had a great start, after he was asked to help choose a period cello in London before coming to Australia. His instrument is a 1729 Guarneri, on loan from benefactor Peter Weiss.

It is one of several period instruments available to the ACO, including a 1743 Guarneri used by the orchestra’s leader, Richard Tognetti, and Australia’s only Stradivarius, played by Vänskä. Valve says the instruments have made a big impact on the sound of the orchestra. “The talented string players making up the orchestra would produce a fine sound from any old box but these instruments add another 20 per cent,” he says. “It’s hard to verbalize but they mean we can push higher.” Most are provided through the ACO Instrument Fund, which was established to acquire a bank of historic instruments after a founding donation by Weiss. The Guarneri is the instrument Valve uses in all his performances, including playing with Selby.

He is preparing for a busy European tour by the orchestra in August, which will include performances at the Edinburgh Festival. He usually takes advantage of such a trip to visit his family in Helsinki. “I always try to go home twice a year,” he says. “I am always there for Christmas for up to two months. I enjoy winter and it means I miss the hottest time in Sydney.” He is such a regular visitor that his family has come up with a joke that his mother sees more of him than she does of his older brother, who lives in the same street as her. There are some advantages to being such a seasoned traveller.

works closely with contemporary Finnish composers and has commissioned new works for the cello, including a concerto by Olli Mustonen which the ACO premiered last year. Mustonen is also a pianist who has performed several times with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra.

Valve acknowledges this is very different from most of the repertoire selected by Selby, which will include Brahms’ Cello Sonata No.1 and Schubert’s first piano trio in her next Melbourne concert on June 15. “The program might seem conservative but it is made up of pieces from the core chamber music repertoire that are no longer played very much. But the repertoire is called standard for a reason and it’s important that people have a chance to hear pieces from it.”

On the June tour where Selby and Valve will be joined by prize-winning Canadian violinist Nikki Chooi, the program includes a new work for piano trio by Australian composer Julian Yu, Prelude and not-a-fugue. Valve thinks it is healthy to include new work, even for an audience more interested in the classics. “It is rewarding as a performer to be part of the process that provides something new. As a musician, everything we do is heard and then disappears in a fleeting moment.”

Valve says the title Selby has selected for her series – Selby & Friends – is an accurate one. “Kathryn has become a friend and I have met many others through her tours,” he says. These include a fellow Finn, Vesa-Matti Leppänen, who is Concertmaster of the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra and has toured twice with Selby and

… and all that Jazz!

Laurence Ronald Groves, “Larry” to his friends, has recently retired as a 3MBS presenter. Larry’s program Colours of Jazz first went to air in 2002 and it is still going strong in 2016.

Larry was born in Brighton, England, a renowned southern seaside town and the home of the famous Brighton Pavilion which houses some of the fi nest art works. Larry was the eldest of four children.

At a very early age Larry developed a passion for all types of music, studying classical piano for three years. “My favourite composer was Tchaikovsky and I studied many of his works; it was most enjoyable!” This was followed by a further three-year study period in Modern Syncopation using the George Shearing style of piano playing, which was then known as the “Locked Hands Method”.

At thirteen Larry discovered jazz music and his penchant for this genre was well and truly established. Larry emigrated to Australia when he was sixteen.

In 1968 Larry joined a rock band playing the latest hits of the day. From there his professional music career spanned a further twenty years, with him primarily playing the Hammond organ for various gigs. He spent many happy hours playing sessions and recording with numerous pop and jazz artists.

“One of the highpoints in my musical career was touring with Broderick Smith, who was leader of a band called The Dingos. Smith wrote and performed the hit single Faded Roses.

In 1984 while on tour with this band they highlighted at the Sydney Entertainment Centre as supporting artists to a famous pop band of the time, U2, which was touring Australia. A further highpoint that year was a solo performance with Broderick Smith at the 1984 East African Tragedy concert. “This was Bob Geldorf’s initiative to raise funds for the starving people in Ethiopia and was very successful.”

As a jazz pianist Larry found it diffi cult to cope with the relentless touring involved. Most of the travelling was by car with an occasional aircraft thrown in for good luck.

Larry’s music career has certainly been extensive. He’s played with many bands, including Magna Carta, The Ticket with Mike Brady of Up There Cazaly fame, and a three year stint with the 1950s rock and roll fl oor show act The Blue Echos. This culminated in a gold record presented to the band by the eminent double bass player Athol Guy from The Seekers.

In 2000 Larry offered his services, particularly his jazz expertise, to 3MBS and as they say in the best circles, the rest is history.

Tenor stars with piano quartet

Pianist Daniel de Borah and tenor Andrew Goodwin first met while studying music in St Petersburg and have maintained a musical partnership since returning to Australia. This extends to Goodwin’s forthcoming guest performance with the Australian Piano Quartet, which de Borah joined last year.

The group’s performance at the Melbourne Recital Centre on 17 June features a newly commissioned song cycle by Paul Dean, Generations, celebrating nature and humanity’s place within it. The rest of the program is made up of music by Richard Strauss – his early Piano Quartet, Op.13, and his song Morgen, arranged for quartet.

De Borah and Goodwin will reunite on 1 September for a performance of Schubert’s Die Winterreise, which details a soul-searching journey through a winter landscape that the duo has made its own.

The Australian Piano Quartet performs music by Richard Strauss and Paul Dean’s new song cycle, Generations, with tenor Andrew Goodwin

at 6pm in the Melbourne Recital Centre on 17 June.

Sara Macliver sings Bach and Bowman

One of Australia’s busiest singers, Perth-based soprano Sara Macliver, will perform J S Bach arias in the next series of concerts based on the Baroque master by the Melbourne Chamber Orchestra. The program explores Bach’s enormous range of contrasting moods from his cantatas to string writing.

As well as the Bach arias, Macliver will perform Calvin Bowman’s song cycle Die Linien des Lebens (The Lines of Life), which was written for her and premiered by the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra in 2010. The concert will also showcase young violinist Anne-Marie Johnson performing Bach’s Violin Concerto in D minor, BWV.1052R.

The Melbourne Chamber Orchestra will perform works by J S Bach and Calvin Bowman with guest soprano Sara Macliver and violinist

Anne-Marie Johnson in the Melbourne Recital Centre on 19 June and in Federation Square’s Deakin Edge on 24 June.

Tasmanian visitors have Melbourne roots

Tasmania’s Huon Quartet, which presents a concert series in Hobart, makes a rare visit to Melbourne, performing a program based around classic pieces by Ravel and Shostakovich. The group has strong Melbourne roots because two of its members, Rohana O’Malley (violin) and Douglas Coghill (viola), studied at the Australian National Academy of Music. They are now members of the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra.

Cellist Jane Tallon was a lecturer at the VCA School of Music for 10 years while first violinist Elinor Lea, who is the TSO’s Associate Concertmaster, was a member of the Adelaide-based Australian String Quartet for nine years.

The Shostakovich work in the program is his seventh quartet, which the composer dedicated to his first wife and is only 13 minutes long. The program also includes an arrangement of 12th century French master’s Perotin’s rare Viderunt omnes and a new work by Melbourne composer Tom Henry.

Huon Quartet performs in the Melbourne Recital Centre at 6pm on 20 June. The program includes pieces by Shostakovich and Ravel and a new work by Tom Henry.

Woodward to perform old and new works

One of Australia’s most acclaimed musicians, pianist Roger Woodward, has received awards from France and Poland, as well as being named a Companion of the Order of Australia.

During his half-century on stage he has always celebrated contemporary music and his Melbourne performance on 23 June includes the premiere of a new work by Sydney composer Andrew Batt-Rawden, which he commissioned.

The rest of the program reflects Woodward’s mastery of the classics. His recording of Debussy’s Images was described by the London Independent as “masterful and matchless” and he will perform both books by the French master.

He will also perform J S Bach’s Chromatic Fantasia & Fugue, BWV.903, and Beethoven’s uncompromising Hammerclavier Sonata, Op.106.

Roger Woodward will present music by Debussy, J S Bach and Beethoven, as well as the premiere of a new work by Andrew Batt-Rawden

at 7.30pm in the Melbourne Recital Centre on 23 June.

Midori celebrates music from Vienna

The Japanese-American violinist Midori has been performing for more than 30 years since she made her public debut at the age of 11 with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra but today music is only a part of her public commitments.

She has a master’s degree in psychology and is a devoted and gifted educator. She founded an organization more than 20 years ago to bring music to poor neighbourhoods in the US and Japan, which has continued to expand. In 2007, she was named a UN Messenger of Peace and has been elected to the American Academy of Arts & Sciences.

She is also a professor of music at the University of Southern California and is a guest professor at Japan’s Soai University. But she is still a dedicated performer on stages around the world, acclaimed as one of the finest violinists of her generation.

She will appear in the Melbourne Recital Centre’s Great Performers series on 28 June with pianist Özgür Aydin playing music by composers associated with Vienna – Mozart, Schubert, Brahms and Schoenberg, as well as the great composer of the waltz, Johann Strauss.

Violinist Midori will appear in the Melbourne Recital Centre at 7.30pm on 28 June with pianist Özgür Aydin playing Brahms’ Sonata, Op.78,

Schubert’s Fantasia, D.934 and Schoenberg’s Phantasy, Op.47.
