We live in a knowledge-based, technology-driven, globaleconomy. Change is a constant. Markets gyrate.

Since late 2008, we have been experiencing a downturn.

What we are doing gives us the tools to succeed in these challenging conditions.

the workplace is the new curriculum

Technology is changing the way we do business, and businesses expect innovation in language training as well. The NGTE allows you to deliver that innovation to your clients and potential clients, giving you a competitive advantage in your local market.

Authentic performance is the goal of all language learning. This basic statement is so obvious that is too often forgotten by educators and institutions, who correctly focus on “outcomes-based” learning but who define the “outcome” as an artificialassessment tool.

The outcome we need to assess is authentic real-world L2 communication outside the classroom. And coursedesign must revolve around this authentic performance.

“the next generation teaching ecosystem helps you to have

teachers and students working together to transform

language learning into on-the-job language performance.”

With the advent of web 2.0, a much richer pedagogy becomes possible, principally due to the strong correspondence betweenweb 2.0 approaches and social constructivist and constructionist learning theories.

Andragogy: three principles:

Improve upon three main problems in adult ELT today:

‣ First, we need a more balanced approach to materials and coursebooks. The NGTE provides teachers and schools with a collaborative authoring system allowing them to easily create, find, share, and organize lessons and courses.

‣ Second, adult language learning can benefit from improved personalization. The NGTE structures content and provides tools that enable teachers and schools to quickly and easily personalize classes and courses.

‣ Third, adult ELT can benefit from more authenticity, for both input and output. The NGTE helps teachers provide authentic input from contextualized web sources, and authentic output from on-the-job language performance.

NGTE approach to delivering teaching now allows your school to deliver a level of personalization that has a definite impact on your students’ business English performance. Since this is the reason why your company clients invest in language training, schools that can deliver these programs will have a competitive advantage in their market.

This transition from mass to personal has deep pedagogic consequences, because personalization is the deepest level oflearner-centered teaching.

Learner-centered teaching takes the teacher and the coursebook away from a permanent position on center stage, and puts the student there. By using tasks, discovery work, learner training, projects, and other techniques, we can focus on what the students bring to the class, not on the teacher or on the text. All things being equal, learning improves. So that is the first step.

The next step is to make sure that these activities are relevant to the learners’ needs and interests.

Martin Dougiamos’ “Five Laws” that underpin an effective learning environment

1. All of us are potential teachers as well as learners - in a true collaborative environment we are both.

2. We learn particularly well from the act of creating or expressing something for others to see.

3. We learn a lot by just observing the activity of our peers.

4. By understanding the contexts of others, we can teach in a more transformational way (constructivism).

5. A learning environment needs to be flexible and adaptable, so that it can quickly respond to the needs of the participants within it.

We would add a 6th law: a more flexible, dynamic approach to actual learning content. Dougiamas’ “Law #5” could be modified to read “Learning content needs to be flexible and adaptable, so that it can quickly respond to the needs of the  participants who use it”
