A WARM WELCOME TO 2013. I AM CONFIDENT IT WILL BE ANOTHER SuCCESSFuL yEAR AS MINDA CONTINuES TO DELIvER SERvICES ACROSS A WIDE RANGE OF AREAS AT THE SAME TIME ALWAyS SEEKING TO ExPAND SERvICES.

We will continue our efforts to better the lives of people with intellectual disability.

Much has happened since our last issue of vocal Point, particularly on the Board. After bidding farewell to Family Board Member Wes Ashman in 2012, the Board welcomed Hermann Janzon to the position of Family Board Member in November 2012.

Mr Janzon has more than 20 years’ management experience in the construction industry. Hermann is Managing Director/CEO of construction company Delnote, which carries out works to multi-storey buildings, commercial projects and major civil engineering projects both locally and regionally.

Hermann has three children and his youngest, Sophie, accesses the services of both Minda and Tutti, so he is delighted to join the Minda Board and bring along his personal and professional experience.

After almost two years on the Board, Shaun Hughes resigned in January as a Board appointed Director following relocation to Melbourne for work. Shaun joined Minda’s Board in May 2011 and during this time served on various committees including Governance, Investment, Audit and Risk.

Shaun’s contribution to Minda has been significant and I thank him for his role in advancing the organisation.

From the President

It is an active time for Minda with the Master Plan and the implementation of Person Centred Thinking and a Human Rights framework, and we were keen to quickly fill the vacant position after Shaun’s resignation.

In February we confirmed Steve Favretto would commence as a Board appointed Director. Mr Favretto is Chief Finanical Officer at KeyInvest Ltd, a leading Australian provider of financial and retirement services. We are pleased to welcome Mr Favretto and look forward to his contribution.

Over two full days in March, the Board and Executive participated in a Strategic Leadership Workshop, where we explored approaches for strategy development and organisational positioning, and strengthened our combined capacity to deal strategically with a wide range of issues and opportunities. After diagnosing strategic challenges, we developed action plans and targets that will serve as a strategic roadmap for the remainder of the year.

I am pleased with the progress we have made on the Master Plan since the approval of Stage I by the City of Holdfast Bay. In February we began the process of appointing a Head Contractor for Stage I works, which includes the construction of new houses and apartments for people supported by Minda, as well as the construction of luxury retirement apartments, Brighton Dunes.

With the Registration of Interest period now closed, we are considering submissions and will engage a project company in the near future (please see page 5 for further details). I would like to recognise the very significant effort of the Board and Executive team in the delivery of this major and complex project.

This year Minda celebrates 115 years of providing a unique and vital service to people with intellectual disability – a history only made possible by the generous support of the South Australian community.

It is easy to make a difference and support us through donating, purchasing an Entertainment Book (flyer enclosed in newsletter), buying a ticket in the Community Lottery (see back page) or volunteering.

I hope you enjoy reading the latest news from Minda.

Linda Deer, Manager, Respite Services and vacation Care, said staff worked with families and people accessing the service to compile a ‘wish list’ of items that will assist in providing a contemporary service approach for the people using the program.

“The furnishings in each house have not been replaced for some time and are badly in need of refurbishment. We have stitching coming undone in the cushions of the lounges at one home, which has led to the stuffing becoming exposed, while other lounges are now so low that it is difficult for people to get up from them,” Linda says.

“We provide meals for people but really need a dishwasher in each house; and with the switch to digital television reception fast approaching, we need new television sets in all four homes.

“Increasingly individuals we support are requesting access to the Internet and Skype in order to keep in touch with family members holidaying overseas, so we need to be able to offer Wi-Fi Internet capability to keep up with technology and ensure we’re offering a contemporary service that also seeks to keep families together,” she continues.

In addition to brand new furniture, the funds will be used to purchase special outdoor equipment to enhance peoples’ stay, as well as modifications to some of the facilities to increase accessibility.

“The extraordinary response we received for the respite fundraising drive of 2012 has been overwhelming,” says Minda CEO Catherine Miller.

“For many people looking after a child with intellectual disability a real break is rare, especially as a couple. It is not as easy as ringing a babysitter. Most young people with a disability have very specific needs, requiring a special carer,” Ms Miller added.

“Our respite program offers relief from the intense emotional and physical requirements of caring for a young person with intellectual disability. And for the individual, it also offers new experiences and the opportunity to build friendships and independence.

“Minda’s Respite Service is a lifeline for so many people; a lifeline that can now better cater for these very specific needs as a direct result of the monies raised during 2012,” Ms Miller said in closing.

On behalf of our Respite Service and everyone at Minda, we thank the individuals, businesses, corporate partners and ambassadors who so vehemently supported this very worthy cause in 2012.

Minda is pleased to announce the appointment of Marcus Gehrig to the role of Executive Manager, Strategic Marketing & Fundraising.

Marcus comes to Minda with extensive experience in business development, strategic planning, marketing and brand development across private, corporate and not-for-profit organisations.

Before joining the Minda team, he played a key role in raising awareness and ensuring financial sustainability for Guide Dogs SA.NT. Prior to that he was Director and Business Manager at Rye Mill Pty Ltd and a Marketing Executive at Advertiser Newspapers.

Marcus says he is excited to be part of the team, with one of his first challenges being to consider opportunities to enhance Minda’s fundraising efforts.

“Even though I am in the early days of my new role it is clear that we have people across the organisation that are doing some outstanding things and I feel that fundraising will be critical in ensuring Minda continues to go from strength to strength,” he says.

Marcus has an Executive Diploma in Business Planning and Master of Business Administration and has held previous Board and Committee positions and is currently on the state executive of the Fundraising Institute of Australia.

WELCOME TO THE FIRST ISSuE OF vOCAL POINT OF THE yEAR. BEFORE WE LOOK AT THE FIRST FEW MONTHS OF 2013, I WOuLD LIKE TO TAKE A MOMENT TO REFLECT ON SOME OF THE HIGHLIGHTS TOWARD THE END OF 2012.

During 2012 Minda saw further transformation of service delivery in line with Person Centred Thinking and Active Support through the Real Lives, Real Places program, and the International Day of People with Disability on 3 December was a fantastic way to further promote the rights and wellbeing of people with disability.

The day seeks to break down disability barriers and instead celebrate abilities and acknowledge the contributions, skills and achievements of people with disability; a great day was had by all who attended.

The South Australian Learning Centre students’ and self advocates’ graduation was another December highlight, as was the volunteer Cocktail Party, followed by Carols on the Lawns. All three events were held on Wednesday, 5 December making for a very busy, but successful and festive day. I would like to thank everyone who helped to make the events such a great success.

Now for 2013, the Minda calendar of events is filling fast and 14 Self Advocates travelled to Geelong for the annual ‘Having a Say’ conference from the 6 to 8 of February. The conference gives attendees the opportunity to meet other self advocates, provide recommendations to politicians and government and ‘have a say’ about issues affecting their lives.

From the CEO

This important experience is only made possible through donations and support of the Minda community, so I would like to thank all who contributed.

The Glenelg Golf Club Ladies’ Day was also held in February, with proceeds going toward Minda. Thank you to all who baked delicious sweets and provided goods for the trading table.

One of my highlights for the year so far was the annual Minda/EPAC Salary Solutions Night of Stars. Held on February 22 at the South Australian Jockey Club at Morphettville, the night was in recognition of long-serving employees and also celebrated employees and work areas that go above and beyond.

We were excited to welcome Rachael Leahcar, who gave an outstanding vocal performance and Ali Clarke did a wonderful job as MC.

I would like to congratulate all employees honored on the night, in particular Michelle Smale for winning the EPAC Salary Solutions STAR Award. Michelle is an outstanding employee and her dedication to the people Minda support is truly inspiring.

Another important event was the opening of accommodation on Cowra Street at Mile End on 26 March. Cowra Street gives people from the urgent Accommodation Waiting list permanent accommodation and we were pleased to have the

CATHERINE MILLER

Honourable Tony Piccolo MP, Minister for Communities and Social Inclusion, Social Housing, Disabilities, youth and volunteers officiate the opening.

Staying on accommodation and we continue to make headway with the new accommodation service in Minlaton - a partnership between Minda, SyP Housing Association and Disability SA - and are recruiting staff to support residents in the homes. Work is also underway to place residents and I look forward to updating you on our progress in the next issue of vocal Point.

It is certainly shaping up to be another busy, productive and successful year for Minda, and a year during which we celebrate 115 years since the organisation’s inception. The success of Minda as one of the largest and indeed oldest disability service providers in South Australia rests on the work of its capable and dedicated staff, its Board, its volunteers and of course the Minda community, who contribute to our cause.

I thank all of you and hope you will continue to support Minda in 2013.

Artists of Minda create place for reflection

The impressive mural (which is around 45 metres in length) was a joint project between Holdfast Bay Council, Minda and other community groups and two participants of the Sturt Cottage Craft program took part.

With the assistance of Minda volunteer Alan Louis Ramachandran, Jenny Richards and Lianne van Mierlo took part in the project, which they said was a lot of fun to work on.

“Lianne taught me how to paint and what different colours to use and Alan Ramachandran also teaches us art, he comes to Sturt Cottage Craft,” Jenny said.

The mural is installed in the cemetery along the wall that borders the unmarked graves, where stillborn babies were laid to rest from as early as 1902 through to the 1980s.

“This is a good project to be involved with and is very important for people and families who may have a baby that is in the North Brighton cemetery,” Lianne said.

The mural depicts local landmarks and highlights, including trams and the

Memorial Arch. It is also a reflection of the natural environment and Jenny says sand has been mixed into the paints, “to make the mural rough to touch and more interesting”.

The project was undertaken with the utmost respect for the families and City of Holdfast Bay Mayor Ken Rollond said, “The whole idea of this memorial is based on the fact still births have occurred and anyone who has been in that situation knows it’s something that’s on your mind forever.”

“unless you’ve been in that situation, I don’t think you can understand the heartache; this memorial is to acknowledge that we care about the past…. a place where people can come and reflect.”

Both Lianne and Jenny said they are proud of the work they did and are keen to continue painting.

“I love painting and I’ve always been interested in art because it’s fun and hobbies make life interesting,” Lianne said.

The arts community of South Australia has come together to create a peaceful place of remembrance in commemoration of more than 300 stillborn babies, laid to rest in unmarked graves in the North Brighton Cemetery.

Master Plan updateThe Master Plan vision will start to take shape soon and the process to appoint a Head Contractor is currently underway.

Contractors from around South Australia applied during the Registrations of Interest process, which finished on 5 March.

Seeking to appoint a Head Contractor to complete the first stage of the Master Plan, within a matter of hours of an advertisement appearing in The Advertiser, submissions started flowing in.

“The registration of interest (ROI) process means Minda can find the best company for the job and based on the current schedule, we’re looking to get started on construction in mid-2013,” Executive Project Director, Roddy Clark said.

In addition to finalising the ROI process, the establishment of two working groups (one for residents and the other for retirees) has advanced the Master Plan.

“Much time and effort has gone into developing the residents’ one and two bedroom apartments, three and four bedroom houses, and the exceptional needs buildings,” Roddy said.

“Everything from colour schemes, to fixtures and fittings and assistive technology has gone into consideration and the process has now been completed.”

Looking forward, the Brighton Dunes launch on April 9 will give prospective retirees a chance to view the display suite and find out more about the project.

Roddy said, “The display suite includes a kitchen, living, dining and bathroom and will give people a good idea of the apartments’ interior schemes.”

For the last 24 months, Minda’s Service Development Unit has researched, planned for

and now begun the journey of enhancing support practices across Minda, moving the

organisation from a traditional service delivery model to contemporary support practices.

6

www.mindainc.com.au

Transforming our service and

transforming lives While this contemporary, personalised support goes under many

different names, including ‘Person Centred Thinking, ‘independent living’ and ‘self-directed support’, they are all based on the same

principle: for people to be able to participate and contribute as equal citizens, they must have choice and control over the

support they receive to go about their daily lives.

For one person involved in the Demonstration Project – where residents in five community homes were

supported via Person Centred Practices – the impact of putting him at the centre of decision making has been profound.

Thirty-one year old Phillip Bayly has received support from Minda since

2001, residing initially at the Brighton site before moving to a home in

the community, which would become part of the Demonstration Project.

As the pace and stress of modern life moves on relentlessly, we all long to take some time

out to rest, recuperate and rejuvenate.

Although Minda’s newest service Disability Choices was only launched in July last year, the initiative has far exceeded expectations.

Disability Choices empowers families and individuals to make informed choice on a range of service options available in South Australia from allied health, to accommodation, training services to physical aids.

Disability Choices Manager, Gai Dawe, says the program has been highly successful. “We’ve been able to help more than 31 families since July 2012. No matter the age or disability, Disability Choices will listen and will provide as much assistance as families need. Sometimes it’s just a referral or having someone to speak to, other times it’s talking to the Department of Community and Social Inclusion on someone’s behalf.”

“We are offering a unique service in that we really champion for families and liaise with funding bodies and service providers on behalf of families – and we’ve seen just incredible results,” she added.

This includes linking families who have waited years for accommodation for their family member and securing funding for people who were unaware of what they were entitled to.

Minda CEO Catherine Miller says often families are not confident in dealing with agencies and need advice and advocacy support. “This innovative service has been established to ease that process, listen to the wishes of an individual and their family and help link them with the appropriate service.”

As an advisory, advocacy and consultancy service, Disability Choices has the advantage of strong networks with funding bodies, schools and other disability service providers.

For Phillip, this was something he certainly needed, but had not considered as it had never been offered – that is until attentive care worker David Story recognised Phillip was “in a bit of a rut” towards the end of 2012.

While Phillip has been on small holidays before, David begun to wonder if he needed more than just time out; that he might benefit from a health retreat. Much to David’s surprise, his ‘off the cuff’ comment was met with great support and excitement by Phillip, his family and other carers. David says that by viewing support through person centred philosophy, there was an openness and willingness to “do things outside the box”.

“There was a real proactive readiness and willingness to embrace new ways of doing things, and an effort to work collaboratively to achieve it” he said.

Personal Plans are integral to Person Centred Thinking and aim to discover the goals and aspirations of the person in partnership with their family and other key people involved in their life. By utilising this tool, a unique health retreat was planned for Phillip. By mid January, David and Phillip had departed for the Limestone Coast – destination Millicent – where for 10 days the pair focused their energy on clean eating and drinking, exercise and recuperation. The Great Australian Bight provided the perfect backdrop.

“The main objective was improving Phillip’s health by providing different lifestyle and health choices away from old habits and temptations at home,” David said.

With a ratio of 1:1, the retreat was also an opportunity to work on coping mechanisms in response to certain stimuli that normally cause anxiety and limit Phillip’s ability to achieve some of his aspirations. This included a fear of heights and after days of subtle and gradual exposure to varying heights, remarkably Phillip walked around the top of Mount Gambier’s inactive volcano – an incredible achievement!

Phillip also relished digging his toes into the pristine sand and it was not uncommon for the pair to cover upwards of 11km along the sandy beaches, resulting in significant weight loss for Phillip!

“I was really pleased to see how quickly Phillip embraced a healthier lifestyle, and how we expanded what was a fairly limited understanding of choices,” David reflects. “Phillip is now choosing to live a healthier lifestyle and reaping the benefits!”

The Demonstration Project is complete and the final report on the findings is being compiled and is due for presentation to Minda’s Board in the coming months.

The Service Development team is developing an action plan to roll out Person Centred Planning, Human Rights, Active Support and community inclusion across Minda, beginning with training for all staff.

Making their own wayCentral to Minda’s philosophy is giving people with intellectual disability the opportunity to live the lives of their choosing, and the recent ‘On My Way 2’ training helped to further do this.

The joint project between Minda and the Department of Community and Social Inclusion (DCSI) was to address the needs of those living in the community, or who are making the transition to independent living.

Outreach Services, Developmental Educator, Carolyn Campbell said, “The ‘On My Way Program 1’ focused on daily living skills, social skills and sexual awareness and the program was so successful, we were happy to extend to a second program, with a different focus.

“The main objective of the latest program was to teach participants to successfully live independently and safely in their own

home environment, with topics including: Living Independently (for example Goals & Choices, Rights & Responsibilities), First Aid, Household Safety, Home Maintenance, Healthy Eating & Lifestyle, Cooking and Shopping & Budgeting.

The eight-week workshop was coordinated for two groups in August to October of 2012 and was very well received by participants.

Carolyn said one of the highlights was when a speaker from Independent Support Services was invited to talk about his experiences in supporting people living in the community.

“One of the participants showed particular interest in the process of living independently and was encouraged to prepare themselves to take the next step,” she said.

The most anticipated part of the workshop, ‘Cooking Skills’ was also very well received, with teams working together to cook a main meal and dessert.

“The result was remarkable; the participants worked so well together and produced a delicious and healthy meal that everyone shared afterwards,” Carolyn said.

Another cooking activity followed where participants were asked to prepare a bacon and egg muffin. All were pleased with their efforts and one participant commented

she couldn’t wait to make it for her husband for his breakfast.

“The awarding of certificates was another highlight and it was clear to see how far the participants had come,” Carolyn said.

The session started with a recap of the past 7 sessions and a ‘Things I’ve Learned’ worksheet was given to each participant, where they were asked to list two things they learned from the workshop.

Caolyn said, “The responses were all very positive and really heartfelt; the program had given participants an opportunity to not only learn to live safely and successfully in their own home environment but also gave them a chance to make new friends.”

they have also helped to water the garden and to pick fruit and vegetables.”

“It’s great that the residents can get involved and feel as though they are making a positive contribution.”

There is also the aim to further develop the garden and extend interaction with the community through the selling of fresh produce and making of personal grooming packages, for example soap and fragrant oils.

“There is also the idea to implement cooking programs which support low cost and simple, yet nutritious meals and to maybe even promote the recipes in a Redman House Cook Book,” Karyn said.

“There really is great potential to increase the social and emotional wellbeing of Redman residents and the garden will help to further encourage independence, social inclusion and participation in the community.”

To find out how you can contribute or to make a donation, contact Minda on 8422 6200.

Minda has received a $3800 community grant from the State Government’s Department for Communities and Social Inclusion, to go towards buying gardening equipment for Minda’s Redman House Community Garden.

Redman team member Mohammad Tarik applied for the grant and said he was encouraged by a previous experience: “I first of all submitted a $500 grant for Nicola Carter to buy a laptop, and when it was accepted, it inspired me to go a bigger!

“I spoke to my manager Karyn McCue and colleagues and then submitted the grant in September of last year.”

Support Coordinator for Redman, Karyn said Tarik’s dedication to the residents of Redman was admirable and that the garden was a great way for residents to enjoy more time outside and get more involved in the community.

“Redman House has seven individuals with very challenging behaviours, so there is not as much opportunity for them to get out of the house and engage with the community,” she said.

“The garden is a wonderful way for the residents to enjoy the outdoors, perform group activities and also gives them something to show for their efforts in the way of fresh vegetables and flowers.”

Tarik said the garden also gave Redman residents a chance to interact with the community: “I have taken residents to Bunnings a few times to select plants and
