This month’s scripture is from Deuteronomy 6:16-18, “Ye shall not tempt the Lord your God, as ye tempted him in Massah. Ye shall diligently keep the commandments of the LORD your God, and his testimonies, and his statutes, which he hath commanded thee. And thou shalt do that which is right and good in the sight of the LORD: that it may be well with thee, and that thou mayest go in and possess the good land which the LORD sware unto thy fathers.” DECISIONS. According to Webster’s dictionary, decision means the act or process of deciding; a determination arrived at after consideration: conclusion <make a decision>. Sooner or later we all will have to make decisions for whatever reason, occasion, or situation. What decisions you may ask? Consider the decisions we make every day. Whether it’s what clothes we are going to wear or which direction we are going to go to get to work, school, or church. The decisions we make affect the way we think, the way we talk, the way we walk, and our attitudes. The list can go on and on and on. Some decisions we make are good and some decisions we make are not. And some decisions can also be for the best. Do you try to make the right decisions in awkward situations? Do you want your decisions to help someone or hinder someone? God wants us to always make the right decisions in everything that we do. He wants us to follow the guidelines He has laid out for us in the bible. And if we keep this in mind, we will always make the right decisions. Remember, the decisions we make will always affect someone or something, whether it’s yourself or someone else.

READING FUN FOR LITTLE LEARNERSBy Deb Dellapena

If you have a young child, you’re probably already reading to him. Each March, schools and libraries across the U.S. host activities that encourage reading to children to celebrate Read Across America Day, March 2, Dr. Seuss’s birthday. These tips from reading experts can add fun when you read to a young child any day of the year. Babies Will Eat Them UpStart young! Newborns listen and react to voices and music. They love to hear the beat and tone of your voice. “I read to both my children the day we came home from the hospital,” says Jean Thorpe, a reading specialist at Roberts Elementary School in Wayne, PA. Start with colorful board or cloth books.

Tips for ToddlersDon’t worry if your rambunctious toddler wants to stand, dance or hop while you read — as long as she’s listening, it counts! Thorpe offers these other tips.

• Keep the reading time short.• Read more than once a day.• Talk about the pictures in the books. Ask questions, but don’t overdo it!• Have sturdy board and cloth books that kids can “read” on their own if you have to take a break.• Re-read the same books over and over again. You may get bored but your child won’t!

• Make mistakes on purpose. Toddlers love catching you saying wrong words.• It’s okay if you don’t always get through an entire book.

Elementary-Age EnjoymentPleasure Reading = School SuccessResearch has found that children who are read to and who read for pleasure are significantly more successful in school than children who do not.

“When children enjoy reading, they are better able to encounter the world around them,” says Laura Thompson, a reading specialist and instructional coach at Red Clay Consolidated School District, headquartered in Wilmington, DE. “That sounds really abstract, but from books, kids learn vicariously. They learn about animals, policemen, outer space or dinosaurs.

It’s much easier to get children to read when they choose the book. Say “okay!” to graphic novels, sports magazines, comic strips or Henry and Madge.

One big mistake parents make is thinking “children become better readers by reading books that are too challenging,” says Thorpe. When your child reads, help him select books that are “just right” (not too hard, not too easy). Ask your child’s teacher or local librarian for help.

“Avoid books with gimmicks,” says Terri Dicesare, owner and director of The House at Pooh Corner/Child’s Conceptions day care in Philadelphia. “Children should use their imagination and listen to the story.”

If your child claims not to like reading, TV or computer games could be the culprit. Set aside time in the day specifically for reading, together or separately.

THE MESSAGE OF GOD TO MAN

When Jesus tasted the vinegar, he said, “It is finished.” Then he bowed his head and died.

JOHN 19:30

“It is finished.”

Stop and listen a moment. Let the words wind through your heart. Imagine the cry from the cross. The sky is dark. The other two victims are moaning. Jeering mouths of the crowd are silent. Perhaps there is thunder. Perhaps there is weeping.

PAGE 6

Page 7: OCTOBER Calvary Church Chat

Perhaps there is silence. Then Jesus draws in a deep breath, pushes his feet down on that Roman nail, and cries, “It is finished!”

What was finished?

The history-long plan of redeeming man was finished. The message of God to man was finished. The works done by Jesus as a man on earth were finished. . . . The sting of death had been removed. It was over.

FOR THE FAMILYThe Word of God establishes the family as the most important Christian social unit in our society and gives us guidance for proper relationships so that we might be everything God chooses for us, both individually and corporately. These scriptures will help you learn more about the promises for your family, God’s guidance for a better family relationship, and how God truly wants to bless and direct every Christian family for His glory.

GOD GUIDES IN YOUR RELATIONSHIPS “WITH THE POOR”

He that hath pity upon the poor lendeth unto the Lord; and that which he hath given will he pay him again.

Proverbs 19:17

Learn to do well; seek judgment, relieve the oppressed, judge the fatherless, and plead for the widow.

Isaiah 1:17

If there be among you a poor man of one of thy brethren within any of thy gates in thy land which the Lord thy God giveth thee, thou shalt not harden thine heart, nor shut thine hand from thy poor brother: But thou shalt open thine hand wide unto him, and shalt surely lend him sufficient for his need, in that which he wanteth. Beware that there be not a thought in thy wicked heart, saying, The seventh year, the year of release, is at hand; and thine eye be evil against thy poor brother, and thou givest him nought; and he cry unto the Lord against thee, and it be sin unto thee. Thou shalt surely give him, and thine heart shall not be grieved when thou givest unto him: because that for this thing the Lord thy God shall bless thee in all thy works, and in all that thou puttest thine hand unto. For the poor shall never cease out of the land: therefore I command thee, saying, Thou shalt open thine hand wide unto thy brother, to thy poor, and to thy needy, in thy land.

Deuteronomy 15:7-11 THE LITTLE BOOK OF PRAYER

METHOD

Common prayer does not dispense us from private prayer. The one sustains the other. Let us each day take time to renew our personal intimacy with Jesus Christ.

ROGER SCHUTZ The Rule of Taizé

And we must recognize that we are heard not for our much speaking but for our purity of heart. Therefore our prayer must be brief and pure unless it chance be prolonged with the inspiration of God’s grace.

PASTOR GARTH G. GITTENSFOCUS ON THE FAMILY NIGHT

I am of the firm opinion that the root cause of breakdown in our communities is a breakdown in our families and it’s time for the church to return it’s focus on family life and family values. To this end Wednesday nights at Calvary are about to change, instead of Bible Study as usual Wednesday nights are now titled “Focus On The Family Nights”.

7:00 – 7:30 pm During this time we gather in the upper sanctuary for praise and worship. The idea at this time is twofold: to allow our praise and worship team to introduce the congregation to new praise songs and simultaneously to allow members of our community who work on Sundays an opportunity to worship with us.

7:35 – 8:25 pmThis is our Education hour: we break up into specially designed classes for the purpose of practice oriented Bible Study.

IS IT A STROKE?Part One of a Two Part Series

What Is a Stroke?Stroke is a medical emergency and the third leading cause of death in the U.S. It occurs when a blood vessel in the brain bursts or, more commonly, when a blockage develops. Without treatment, cells in the brain quickly begin to die. The result can be serious disability or death. If a loved one is having stroke symptoms, seek emergency medical attention without delay.

Stroke SymptomsSigns of a stroke may include:Sudden numbness or weakness of the body, especially on one side.Sudden vision changes in one or both eyes, or difficulty swallowing.Sudden, severe headache with unknown cause.Sudden problems with dizziness, walking, or balance.Sudden confusion, difficulty speaking or understanding others.Call 911 immediately if you notice any of these symptoms.

Stroke Test: Talk, Wave, SmileThe F.A.S.T. test helps spot symptoms. It stands for:

Face. Ask for a smile. Does one side droop?Arms. When raised, does one side drift down?Speech. Can the person repeat a simple sentence? Does he or she have trouble or slur words?Time. Time is critical. Call 911 immediately if any symptoms are present.

Stroke: Time = Brain DamageEvery second counts when seeking treatment for a stroke. When deprived of oxygen, brain cells begin dying within minutes. There are clot-busting drugs that can curb brain damage, but they have to be used within three hours of the initial stroke symptoms. Once brain tissue has died, the body parts controlled by that area won’t work properly. This is why stroke is a top cause of long-term disability.

Diagnosing a StrokeWhen someone with stroke symptoms arrives in the ER, the first step is to determine which type of stroke is occurring. There are two main types, and they are not treated the same way. A CT scan can help doctors determine whether the symptoms are coming from a blocked blood vessel or a bleeding one. Additional tests may also be used to find the location of a blood clot or bleeding within the brain.

Ischemic StrokeThe most common type of stroke is known as an ischemic stroke. Nearly nine out of 10 strokes fall into this category. The culprit is a blood clot that obstructs a blood vessel inside

the brain. The clot may develop on the spot or travel through the blood from elsewhere in the body.

Hemorrhagic StrokeHemorrhagic strokes are less common but far more likely to be fatal. They occur when a weakened blood vessel in the brain bursts. The result is bleeding inside the brain that can be difficult to stop.

‘Mini-Stroke’ (TIA)A transient ischemic attack, often called a “mini-stroke,” is more like a close call. Blood flow is temporarily impaired to part of the brain, causing symptoms similar to an actual stroke. When the blood flows again, the symptoms disappear. A TIA is a warning sign that a stroke may happen soon. It’s critical to see your doctor if you think you’ve had a TIA. There are therapies to reduce the risk of stroke.

What Causes a StrokeA common cause of stroke is atherosclerosis -- hardening of the arteries. Plaque made of fat, cholesterol, calcium, and other substances builds up in the arteries, leaving less space for blood to flow. A blood clot may lodge in this narrow space and cause an ischemic stroke. Atherosclerosis also makes it easier for a clot to form. Hemorrhagic strokes often result from uncontrolled high blood pressure that causes a weakened artery to burst.

Risk Factors: Chronic ConditionsCertain chronic conditions increase your risk of stroke. These include:

High blood pressureHigh cholesterol

DiabetesObesity

Taking steps to control these conditions may reduce your risk.

Risk Factors: BehaviorsCertain behaviors also increase the risk of stroke:SmokingGetting too little exerciseHeavy use of alcohol

Risk Factors: DietA poor diet may increase the risk for stroke in a few significant ways. Eating too much fat and cholesterol can lead to arteries that are narrowed by plaque. Too much salt may contribute to high blood pressure. And too many calories can lead to obesity. A diet high in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and fish may help lower stroke risk.

Risk Factors You Can’t ControlSome stroke risk factors are beyond your control, such as getting older or having a family history of strokes. Gender plays a role, too, with men being more likely to have a stroke. However, more stroke deaths occur in women. Finally, race is

PAGE 10

Page 11: OCTOBER Calvary Church Chat

an important risk factor. African-Americans, Native Americans, and Alaskan Natives are at greater risk compared to people of other ethnicities.

A FORTRESS OF COMMITMENT

Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life. Proverbs 4:23 (NIV)

The day Gary Rosberg became “Doctor Rosberg” was, in his words, “the most hollow day of my entire life.” For years he had studied for his degree in counseling, but he had nearly lost his wife and two children in the process.

Lying in bed one night, he asked his wife Barbara what, to him, was the “most frightening question” of his life: “Can I come home?”

Her response was, “Gary, we love you, we want you, we need you, but we don’t know you.”

From that point on, Gary resolved to become the husband and father God wanted him to be. As he and Barbara sat in our “FamilyLife Today” radio studio 12 years later and told me this story, I asked Barbara how she felt lying there at night listening to, essentially, the voice of a stranger.

“He was always home in my heart, even though he wasn’t home physically,” she said. “The door of my heart never closed throughout the hard times, throughout his absence.”

Knowing many women in our audience face similar circumstances, I asked, “But with money being tight, with the pressures of two children, and running a household by yourself, did you ever want to quit?”

She didn’t hesitate with her answer. “No, I loved him. He is everything to me. Yes, I needed him to change those patterns of lifestyle. But when I took those vows on our wedding day I meant it. I stand before God in my commitment to Gary.”

Gary used Proverbs 4:23 (above) as the basis for his book for men titled Guard Your Heart. But listening to Barbara talk, I realized the key role she had played as a fortress of commitment during those difficult years. God had used her and her prayers to help guard Gary’s heart when he wasn’t protecting it himself.

Discuss: Against what forces do you need to guard your heart? What tends to pull you away from your commitment to God and your family? Pray: That God would give you the strength to give up those things which keep you from your priorities.

MARRIAGE HUMOR

WHY MEN CAN’T WINIf you work too hard, there is never any time for her. If you don’t work enough, you’re a good-for-nothing bum. If she has a boring repetitive job with low pay, it’s exploitation. If you have a boring repetitive job with low pay, you should get off your butt and find something better. If you get a promotion ahead of her, it’s favoritism. If she gets a job ahead of you, it’s equal opportunity. If you mention how nice she looks, it’s sexual harassment. If you keep quiet, it’s male indifference. If you cry, you’re a wimp. If you don’t, you’re insensitive. If you make a decision without consulting her, you’re a chauvinist. If she makes a decision without consulting you, she’s a liberated woman. If you ask her to do something she doesn’t enjoy, that’s domination. If she asks you, it’s a favor. If you try to keep yourself in shape, you’re vain. If you don’t, you’re a slob. If you buy her flowers, you’re after something. If you don’t, you’re not thoughtful.

GOD CAN HANDLE IT ….MARRIAGEBy Dr. S. M. Henriques

WHEN ADVERSITY COMESMany years ago, William Shakespeare penned, “Love is an ever-fixed mark that looks on tempests and is never shaken.” We agree. Love is the one thing that enables us to keep pushing forward when everything else is crumbling around us.

If the love of a husband and wife is true, the appearance of adversity actually strengthens their love. Gary Smalley has written, “Suffering has a way of bringing people together; the most important things on earth come into sharper focus.”

Since none of us are exempt from trouble, let us prepare ourselves in advance, knowing that adversity can make a marriage stronger.

The formula for achieving a successful relationship is simple: You should treat all disasters as if they were trivialities, but never treat a triviality as if it were a disaster.

Quentin Crisp

Do not worry about anything, but pray and ask God for everything you need, always giving thanks.

HOMESTEAD EXEMPTIONThe City of Philadelphia will be offering a Homestead Exemption for all homeowners in Philadelphia. This will allow homeowners to qualify for a reduction of their home’s re-assessment and therefore reduce their tax bill. To receive property tax relief for tax year 2014, this form must be filed by the deadline Thursday, November 15, 2012. Brochures and applications are available in the Vestibule and Church Office 6142 Haverford Avenue 215-747-9979.

COMCAST INTERNET ESSENTIALS PROGRAM• About 30% of Americans—many of whom are living below the poverty line—remain on the wrong side of the digital divide. Research consistently shows that the barriers to broadband adoption involve a complex mix of low digital literacy, perceived lack of relevance of online content and the need for low-cost, good-quality computers and Internet service. Internet Essentials is intended to address all of these critical hurdles to broadband adoption.• Internet Essentials is not just another Comcast product or service. It represents the largest and most comprehensive broadband adoption program anywhere in America and provides low-cost broadband service for $9.95 a month; the option to purchase a full-service, Internet-ready computer for under $150; and multiple options for digital literacy training in print, online and in-person.• The Internet Essentials program has three principal components:• Low Cost Internet Service: Internet Essentials provides eligible low-income families in the Comcast service area affordable access to high-speed Internet service from their home. For only $9.95 per month – around 33 cents a day – eligible families receive Comcast’s XFINITY Internet Economy Service with no monthly equipment fees, installation charges or activation fees, representing a discount of at least $27.00 a month or over 70% off regular charges for this service. In addition, Internet Essentials families are not subject to standard credit checks and are not asked or required to sign any contracts to take the service for a specified period of time.• Discounted Computers: As part of Internet Essentials, Comcast offers eligible families the opportunity to purchase a full-service, Internet-capable computer for under $150, substantially below retail. Working with our partners, including Microsoft, we offer fully loaded computers with Internet Explorer and productivity software. We also provide the Norton Security Suite, a $160 value, at no additional charge to ensure that Internet Essentials users have a secure online experience.• Digital Literacy: Internet Essentials customers receive access to print, online and in-person digital literacy training free of charge. These digital literacy materials are the first step in helping those who have not been connected

understand the value, relevance and the ease of use of the Internet.• In addition, once we help families get online, we want them to stay online. Any household that qualifies during the initial three-year enrollment period will remain eligible for the discounted price so long as at least one child in the household continues to meet the program’s National School Lunch Program eligibility test. As long as they remain eligible, participating families will be able to benefit from Internet Essentials throughout their child’s K-12 education.

• To qualify for Internet Essentials, a household must:

1. Reside in a location where Comcast offers Internet service;

2. Have at least one child receiving free or reduced price lunches through the National School Lunch Program;

3. Have not subscribed to Comcast Internet service within the last 90 days; and

4. Not have an overdue Comcast bill or unreturned equipment.

PHOTO ID REQUIRED FOR NOVEMBER 2012 ELECTION

Delaware County Council is alerting residents that they will be required to show an acceptable photo ID, one with an expiration date that is current, to be eligible to vote in the November 6 General Election.

The Pennsylvania Voter ID law was enacted in the spring, and there was a soft roll-out for the Primary Election. Changes in the requirements have been made as recently as Friday, July 20, when the Department of State announced the creation of a new card that can be issued to voters who are not able to provide all the documents they would normally need to obtain a photo ID from PennDOT, such as a birth certificate.

Current information on the Voter ID law is available at the state’s Web site at www.VotesPA.com and there is a link to that site on the County Web site at www.co.delaware.pa.us.

“This is a significant change in the way that people vote in Pennsylvania and it is our goal to ensure that the voting process is accessible and open to all registered voters,” said County Councilman David White, Council’s liaison to the Election Bureau and Voter Registration.

“In talking to residents, we recognize that people have questions and we want to be sure that people have the correct information on what constitutes acceptable photo ID, how they

PAGE 16

Page 17: OCTOBER Calvary Church Chat

obtain a photo ID and how that impacts people who vote by absentee ballot,” White said.

JOKE FOR YOUR SOUL

CULINARY OBITUARY

It is with the saddest heart that I must pass on the following news. The Pillsbury Doughboy died yesterday of a yeast infection and complications from repeated pokes in the belly. He was 71.

Doughboy was buried in a lightly greased coffin. Dozens of celebrities turned out to pay their respects, including Mrs. Butterworth, Hungry Jack, the California Raisins, Betty Crocker, the Hostess Twinkies and Captain Crunch. The grave site was piled high with various flours.

Aunt Jemima delivered the eulogy and lovingly described Doughboy as a man who never knew how much he was kneaded. Doughboy rose quickly in show business, but his later life was filled with turnovers. He was not considered a very smart cookie, wasting much of his dough on half-baked schemes. Despite being a little flaky at times, he still, as a crusty old man, was considered a roll model for millions.

Doughboy is survived by his wife, Play Dough; two children John Dough and Jane Dough, plus they had one in the oven. He is also survived by his elderly father Pop Tart.

The funeral was held at 350˚ for about 20 minutes.

DAILY PRAISE FROMTHE BIBLE

Inspiration from the PsalmsBy Dan Dick

Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!

Psalm 133:1Rob had been through the death of one congregation; he didn’t want to see it happen again. There really weren’t any problems that couldn’t be worked out in Christian love. This church had been through a lot, and there was no reason to believe that it couldn’t weather a lot more storms. If everyone would just remember that they were there to serve Christ, then everything would work out fme. If Christ could calm the Sea of Galilee, He should have no trouble with the First Church.

Christ built His church as a place for harmony and unity. It is a place for people to come together in celebration and love. Christ rejoices when His family lives together in peace. We, too, can rejoice, for there is nothing better than being able to dwell together in His love.

PRAYER: The best friends in the world to have are those who are bonded together with me through my faith. Bring joy to my relationships, Lord, and bless me with harmony and unity. Amen.

PROMISES YOU CANCOUNT ON!

Whatever your problems, whatever your needs, the answers are in the Bible. Whatever you’re feeling, whatever you’re suffering, whatever you’re hoping ... the Bible has something to say to you.

GOD’S PROMISES ON “LYING”

A false witness shall not be unpunished, and he that speaketh lies shall not escape.

Proverbs 19:5

If a false witness rise up against any man to testify against him that which is wrong; Then both the men, between whom the controversy is, shall stand before the LORD, before the priests and the judges, which shall be in those days; And the judges shall make diligent inquisition: and, behold, if the witness be a false witness, and hath testified falsely against his brother; Then shall ye do unto him, as he had thought to have done unto his brother: so shalt thou put the evil away from among you.

Deuteronomy 19:16-19

But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.

Revelation 21:8

WHAT JESUS IS SAYING TO YOU

By Peter Wallace

My kindness is all you need. My power is strongest when you are weak.

2 Corinthians 12:9

Even when you seem plagued by a thorny sin that doesn’t seem to let go.

Even when you are lost in confusion about a decision you must make.Even when you are bound up by loneliness.

Even when you fail at a good intention.

Even when you struggle with another person.

Even when you feel you’ve made a selfish choice.

Even when you don’t seem to be growing as fast as you’d like.

Even when doubts shake your confidence-- even in the Lord of your life.

Even then, the Lord’s kindness, or grace, is all you need.

Exchange your weakness-in whatever form you find it today-for His strength. He is sufficient.

Charles Swindoll

GOD GIVES FREELY TO MEN“Eternal Hope For Life”

Because of the hope which is laid up for you in heaven, of which you heard before in the word of the truth of the gospel, which has come to you, as it has also in all the world, and is bringing forth fruit, as it is also among you since the day you heard and knew the grace of God in truth.

Colossians 1:5-6

GOD GIVES FREELY TO MEN“Wisdom for Each Day”

My son, pay attention to my wisdom; Lend your ear to my understanding, that you may preserve discretion, And your lips may keep knowledge.

Proverbs 5:1-2 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom; A good understanding have all those who do His commandments. His praise endures forever.

Psalm 111:10

The days of our lives are seventy years; And if by reason of strength they are eighty years, Yet their boast is only labor and sorrow; For it is soon cut off, and we flyaway. Who knows the power of Your anger? For as the fear of You, so is Your wrath. So teach us to number our days, That we may gain a heart of wisdom.

Psalm 90:10-12

How much better to get wisdom than gold! And to get understanding is to be chosen rather than silver.

Father Almighty! We bow before thine infinite goodness

and invoke in prayer thine all-merciful presence of love.

We ask, and as we ask we give thanks that thy power and presence are here in love

And that we are tightly held in thine all-embracing arms, where our every need is supplied

And where we shall ever rest secure from all the buffets of the world.

Open to us the inner chambers of peace and harmony, which divinely belong to us as thy children.

We come as little children into the sacred and trustful presence of thy love,

Knowing full well that only love can draw and hold us in peace and harmony and prosperity.

Every fear falls away as we enter into thee and thy glory of love

And as we bask in the sunshine of love, thy love,

Thy never-failing love!

DEAR TIDE:

I’m writing to say what an excellent product you have! I’ve used it since the beginning of my married life, when my Mom told me it was the best.

Now that I am older and going through menopause, I find it even better! In fact, about a month ago, I spilled some red wine on my new white blouse.

My unfeeling and uncaring husband started to berate me about how clumsy I was and generally started becoming a pain in the neck. One thing led to another and I ended up with a lot of his blood on my white blouse. I tried to get the stain out using a bargain detergent, but it just wouldn’t come out.

After a quick trip to the supermarket, I stopped and got a bottle of liquid Tide with bleach alternative, and to my surprise and satisfaction, all of the stains came out! In fact, the stains came out so well, that some detectives who came by yesterday told me that the DNA tests were negative and my attorney said that I would no longer be considered a suspect! I thank you, once again, for having such a great product.

Well, gotta go. I have to write a letter to the Hefty bag people...

But Jesus spoke to them at once. “Don’t be afraid,” he said. “Take courage. I am here!”

MATTHEW 14:27 NLT

“A ghost,” someone screamed. Fear of the sea was eclipsed by a new terror. Thoughts raced as the specter drew near. Was it a figment of our imagination? Was it a vision? Who? How? What was this mystical light that appeared so...?

A flash of lightning illuminated the sky. For a second I could see its face ... his face. A second was all I needed. It was the Master! He spoke:

“Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.”

Nothing had changed. The storm still raged. The wind still shrieked. The boat still pitched. The thunder still boomed. The rain still slapped. But in the midst of the tumult, I could hear his voice. The night was ferocious, yet he spoke as though the sea were placid and the sky silent. And, somehow, courage came. Let your heart and mind be filled with courage because Jesus is saying, “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.”

SENIOR MOMENTSAn elderly couple had dinner at another couple’s house and after eating, the wives left the table and went into the kitchen.

The two gentlemen were talking, and one said, ‘Last night we went out to a new restaurant and it was really great. I would recommend it very highly.’

The other man said, ‘What is the name of the restaurant?’

The first man thought and thought and finally said, ‘What is the name of that flower you give to someone you love? You know.... The one that’s red and has thorns.’

‘Do you mean a rose?’

‘Yes, that’s the one,’ replied the man. He then turned towards the kitchen and yelled, ‘Rose, what’s the name of that restaurant we went to last night?’

MEN OF THE BIBLEBy Dan Hannon

JOB

Job

“You have the patience of Job.”

Smile if someone pays you that compliment because Job was one of the most honorable characters in the Bible. He was a wealthy man whose family, fortune, health, and friendships were suddenly taken from him for no apparent reason. Yet he refused to succumb to unbelief. Though he languished aloud, Job knew his Lord had a reason for his predicament and he patiently waited for things to be made right.

Job lived in the land of Uz and was a faithful believer in God. In fact, God told Satan that Job was the most faithful man in the world.

“The only reason he worships You,” Satan retorted, “is that You protect him and bless everything he does. How do You think he would behave if You let him lose all he has? He’ll curse You.”

“We’ll see,” God said and let Job’s wonderful world collapse around him.

Afterwards Job was visited by three friends, Eliphaz, Bildad, and Zophar. They came to comfort him, but they were hardly a comfort to this godly man. They did not understand Job’s devout faith. It seemed apparent to them that Job was being punished because he had done something wrong.

Job knew better. He was not perfect, but he certainly had not committed enough sins to warrant the intensity of sufferings he had been given. Although he demanded to know why God had let him fall into such a state and even became very angry with God, Job never lost faith.

God’s reply was a stern and eloquent reminder of His incredible power and the insignificance of human understanding. Job apologized for questioning the Lord’s decisions. Then God turned His reproach on the three friends for misinterpreting the meaning of Job’s plight. In the end, God made Job twice as wealthy as before.

When we see good people around us afflicted with terrible diseases, tragedies, and setbacks, we should remember Job who lost everything but his understanding of God’s faithfulness.

A STRAIGHT LINE IN A CROOKED WORLDSubmitted in Memory of

Sis. Priscilla Young

In a book about historical figures, Jeff O’Leary described Sir Thomas More (1478–1535), an English lawyer, scholar, and statesman as “a straight stick in a crooked world.” I immediately thought of how this should describe Christians. To the saints at Philippi, Paul wrote, “That ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world; holding forth the word of life; that I may rejoice in the day of Christ, that I have not run in vain, neither laboured in vain” (Philippians 2:15; cf. Deuteronomy 32:5). Please note that these saints were living in a crooked and perverse world. Crooked means bent, curved, or twisted. It is from the Greek word skolios. You may have heard of scoliosis, the medical condition which involves an abnormal curvature or misalignment of the spine. The saints at Philippi were living in a morally bent and spiritually twisted world. Their world was filled with darkness and soot. In the midst of this world, they were to shine as lights and to be without spot (Matthew 5:14-16; James 1:27). Peter wrote, “But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvelous light” (1 Peter 2:9). Please note that these saints had been called out of darkness. They were supposed to be peculiar or different. They were supposed to be holy. Obviously, our world is much like that described by Paul and Peter. It is crooked and perverse and dark. As Christians, we must not bend to it. We must stand strong (Ephesians 6:10-17). We must be a straight line in a crooked world. —Wade Webster

BRIEF HISTORY OF DECEASED CALVARY MEMBERS AND FORMER CALVARY MEMBERFor I will turn their mourning into joy, and will comfort them, and make them rejoice from their sorrow.

Jeremiah 31:13

Although August is always thought of as a good fun summer month, it ended on a sad note for Calvary. Two of Calvary’s devoted, dedicated members were called Home to be with the Lord on Monday, August 20, 2012 and Wednesday, august 23, 2012. It was not a happy week for Calvary.

Home going services for Calvary member, Sis. Nora Haith, were held on Friday, August 31, 2012. Ms. Nora Haith, age 93 departed this life on Monday, August 20, 2012, at Fitzgerald Mercy Hospital, in Delaware County, Pennsylvania. Born March 4, 1919 to the late Granville and Signora Haith, in Scottdale, PA. Nora was the fourth of nine children born of this union.

Nora was educated in Scottdale, Pennsylvania, a small town about 45 miles east of Pittsburgh. Until she entered Mercy Hospital and School of Nurses in September, 1941, she had not been any further from home than Pittsburgh.

During her junior year in training, she became a member of the United States Cadet Nurse Corps; upon graduation in June, 1944, she received the prize for “Best Work In Obstetrics”.

After passing State Boards, Nora became a staff nurse at the Philadelphia Hospital for Contagious Diseases. During the 11 years she spent there, she moved up to Head Nurse and Supervisor.

She received a BS Degree in Nursing Education, and her Master’s in Education from the University of Pennsylvania. She was initiated into Sigma Theta Tau (International Honorary Nursing Sorority) and Pi Lambda Theta (International Honorary Education Sorority).

When the new Mercy-Douglass Hospital opened, she became Science Instructor and taught the last classes to graduate, 1959 and 1960. Following this, Nora was employed as Medical Research Nurse for Smith, Kline & French at Mercy-Douglass Hospital; a Psychiatric Research Nurse for the University of Pennsylvania at Mercy-Douglass; Research Nurse at Norristown State Hospital, and the first Veterans Administration Nurse in a Day Treatment Center.

A celebration of life was held on Saturday, September 22, 2012 for former Calvary member, Mary P. Timmons. Mary was a long-time member of Calvary, serving as a Trustee Aide. Mary relocated to New Jersey, where she moved her membership. Mary passed on Thursday, September 13, 2012.

In her own words:

I have heard it said that when you get to heaven, you should slide in with tattered clothes, a rejoicing heart, and completed assignments saying, “What a ride!” Boy, has my life been a joyously blessed experience!

My assignment on earth began on October 3, 1931, when the Master delicately placed me in the hands of my loving earthly parents, Calvin and Ethel Phillips. Instantly, I recognized that God had granted me an amazing manservant to serve as my father. I was a “Daddy’s Girl” to the core. He was my Daddy and I was his ‘stink pot.” My Daddy was the epitome of the reflection of God’s heart here on earth. Oh how I loved to call my “Daddy!”

I was positioned as second oldest in my family of four siblings. Gloria, Tazwell, Edmond and Norman were my first examples of how God showed me of what it is to be protective, be protected, adored, cherished and loved. Throughout the course of my life, my dedication to my siblings remained unwavering. You have no idea how vast the depths of my love extended for the four of them. My siblings served as the cornerstone for how deeply I loved.

I knew from a very young age that I was special. I didn’t fully understand my purpose but I knew that I had one. From

watching my mother’s faith walk, I was firmly convinced that I could not live without the hand of God resting on my life. I accepted Christ at the early age of six. Shortly after placing my hand blindly in the hand of Christ, I began to see my life come together as pieces to a puzzle. It is not until you walk in blind faith that your eyes are fully open.

The bible says that your gifts will make room for you. God gave me a big personality! Many will call it dramatics, but I say it’s raw talent. My gift of gab, expression, and the ability to be a people person opened so many doors tor me. At the age of eleven, I introduced the accomplished Marian Anderson at a community banquet. I participated in community drama guilds, became active in political committees, and spoke at several rallies as an activist. However, the revelation of my true gifts came through the love of singing and children.

After graduating from West Philadelphia High School, I was granted the opportunity to attend Berkeley University in California and the esteemed Juliard School of Music in New York. My gift of singing was immediately recognized by others that I was afforded the opportunity to record an album in New York City. The experience alone was incredible! However I quickly realized that the music industry was not for me. My voice was to be used for the glory of God and not for the profit of man. You just never know where life will take you, but if you seek God’s wisdom, He will always direct you on the right path.

My focused turned to my two loves, Christ and children. Although I loved to sing, most people don’t know that my true passion was for the children. One of my greatest impacts would come through my profession of teaching. I cannot fully express the joy my heart-felt to walk into a classroom every day for thirty-five years. Although I was the teacher, my kids taught me so much. They helped me to embrace my true self. While I taught, I served. Serving Christ truly was the foundation of my life. Throughout the course of my journey, I became a faithful member of Tinley Temple, Mt. Pisgah, Cornerstone Baptist Church and Calvary Baptist Church. I was what most would call a “worker bee.” I served in the Children’s Choir, Youth/Young Adult Usher Board, Hospitality Ministry, Willing Workers, Trustee Aides and the Women’s Ministry. I always believed that my life should reflect my walk. I wanted to be a “doer” of God’s word. I wanted my life to reflect God in my actions not just in words. I gave Him my all and He blessed my life tremendously.

On October 26, 1957, I married Nathaniel Purnell. I was gifted a daughter, Natalie and a son, Nathaniel, Jr. Shortly thereafter, Chrisandra and Anitrea, the loves of my life, joined me on my journey.

BRIEF HISTORY◄Continued From Page EighteenMy children became my immediate focus. I was motivated by intense love for them to be a great example of faith. In lite, God will test your faith and your commitment to Him. My faith was tested. I did not always make the right decisions, but God’s mercy always carried me through. Everything teaches a lesson. On January 19, 1974, I married Dr. Izadore Timmons and was gifted five additional children; Linda, Steven, Anthony, Donna and Jackie. God was good to me!

I always desired for my life to be a living example of God’s grace. I believed that it was my responsibility as a Christian to treat everyone with open arms and a forgiving heart. I allowed my light to shine bright before men no matter if I stood in a classroom, grocery store, church, or laid in a hospital bed. I knew that God placed me on assignment wherever He sent me. I went fearlessly and executed with integrity to get the word out about Jesus. I wasn’t perfect but I loved God and wanted to be pleasing in His sight. My life was an amazing journey that has now come to completion. I am so thankful and extremely blessed to have experienced heaven on earth through my family and friends.

I will forever be blessed to have had: my husband, Dr. Izadore Timmons; my children, Chrisandra Parker and Anitrea (Mark) Ritvalski; my siblings, Gloria (William) Savage, Tazwell Phillips, Edmond (Delaine) Phillips and Norman (Rose) Phillips; my grandchildren, Norman (Donnette), Vanessa (Jeffrey), Harold, Tracy, Diana (Bruce), Chase (Michelle), Mark, II, Alexis, Alisha, Brandon, Xzavier and Olivia; my great-grandchildren, Edward, Harold Jr., Ciera, Tralisa,

Wayne, Na’deja, Roman, Celby, Tyler and Chayce; my godchildren, Connie Banks, Mary Walker and Frieda Bervine and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and wonderful friends.

Although I am not here in my physical body, I pray that my spiritual walk will empower your lives for generations to come. Realize, that we are all on loan to one another and that the Master has the final say in all things. I leave you with my love, my gratitude and my legacy of faith. Remember that when you walk with Christ, it is a guarantee that we will see each other again. Keep your hand in God’s hand. Remain prayerful and faithful. Don’t look down. Always look up. You just might see something. For God is always speaking. I love you all.

Love,Mary P. Timmons

THE RAIN

It was a busy morning, approximately 8:30 am, when an elderly gentleman in is 80's, arrived to have stitches removed from his thumb. He stated that he was in a hurry as he had an appointment at 9:00 am. I took his vital signs and had him take a seat, knowing it would be over an hour before someone would to able to see him. I saw him looking at his watch and decided, since I was not busy with another patient, I would evaluate his wound

On exam it was well healed, so I talked to one of the doctors, got the needed supplies to remove his sutures and redress his wound. While taking care of his wound, we began to engage in conversation I asked him if he had a doctor's appointment this morning, as he was in such a hurry. The gentleman told me no, that he needed to go to the nursing home to eat breakfast with his wife.

I then inquired as to her health. He told me that she had been there for a while and that she was a victim of Alzheimer Disease. As we talked, and I finished dressing his wound, I asked if she would be worried if he was a bit late. He replied that she no longer knew who he was, that she had not recognized him in five years now.

I was surprised, and asked him. "And you still go every morning, even though she doesn't know who you are?" He smiled as he patted my hand and said. "She doesn't know me, but I still know who she is."

I had to hold back tears as he left, I had goose bumps on my arm, and thought, "That is the kind of love I want in my life." True love is neither physical, nor romantic. True love is an acceptance of all that is, has been, will be, and will not be.

Archie Alexander (1888-1958): Civil Engineer and Business ExecutiveBy Dorothy G. Kapenstein

On the evening of September 4, 2012, First Lady Michelle Obama made a speech at the Democratic National Convention. She spoke glowingly and earnestly about the fact that both her family and President Obama’s family stressed the value of a good education. She noted that both she and the President worked long and hard to pay off their college

loans. This was not an easy task for two young lawyers at the first step in professional life and also starting married life. But how lucky they were to have the money for college and law school available to them in the form of loans and grants and how lucky they were to be able to get jobs with good law firms to enable them pay back the loans!

This almost never happened for African Americans who lived and worked in the years from the end of the Civil War to the mid 1960’s when laws were finally enacted to end discrimination. Between those two momentous dates, black families had ideals and aspirations. They believed that education was the tool that would enable them to build a better life for themselves and their children but they very seldom had the money to provide that education. However, many families made sacrifices and many students worked at any job they could get while earning their degrees. There were no student loans at that time so there was no prolonged payback period. However, the agonizing toil before and during college more than made up for that. With black families and their children working together, there are many wonderful success stories to be told. Of course there were young people without families or whose families were unable to help them and they too have great stories.

Archie Alexander’s life story is an inspiring one. He was born in Ottumwa, Iowa, the oldest of a large family of eight children. His parents were Price and Mary Alexander. When Archie was starting elementary school, his father decided to move his family to a farm near Des Moines, Iowa. Price Alexander got a job as head janitor in the Des Moines National Bank and he earned modest wages. Everyone in the family had to work to add to the modest earnings of Price Alexander. Archie graduated from Oak Park Elementary School and went on to study at Oak Park High School. He had to work at any part time job he could get and there were very few good ones for a black teenager. He did well at his studies and he decided to go on to college to get more education. He was accepted at Oak Park College. He also took courses at Cummins Art College in Des Moines. He had to continue with his part time jobs. His parents helped but they did not have much to give.

By this time, he had determined what his life work would be. He wanted to be an engineer. He applied to the State University of Iowa, which had a strong engineering course, and he was accepted. Several accounts of his life say that he was the only black student there at that time. They also say that his college advisor told him that “a Negro could not succeed as an engineer.” This probably made Archie Alexander even more determined to succeed in his chosen field. In addition to being a good and hardworking student, he was a fine athlete.

He was big, well-built man at six feet two and about 180 pounds. He made the football team and held the position of tackle. Scholars agree that he was the first black athlete ever to be on the team. He suffered injuries including a broken rib and knee injuries but he never missed a game because of injury or illness and he always showed up for practice. He actually did miss three games because of race discrimination. Three opposing teams refused to play against a team with a black player and Alexander was benched for those games. Archie was such a talented football player that he soon became known as “Alexander the Great.”

In 1912, Archie Alexander was awarded his bachelor’s degree in civil engineering. He had already filed job applications with several engineering companies but every one of them turned him down because of his race, even though his academic credentials were excellent. He finally landed a job working as a draftsman with the Marsh Engineering Company. He worked his way up and became head of the Marsh Company bridge construction unit in Minnesota and Iowa. During that time, he began to think more and more about opening his own company. Alexander married Audra Linzy in 1913. She was from Denver, Colorado. He designed their home in Des Moines, personally supervised the construction and did some of the work himself. The couple had only one child, their son, Archie Alexander, Jr. Sadly, he died in early childhood.

After two years with the Marsh Company, Alexander had enough self-confidence to go out on his own. He founded A.A. Alexander, Inc. in 1917. The company specialized in building quality concrete and steel bridges. It did moderately well. Older and bigger companies got the best jobs. In addition, there were people who would never give a project to a black-owned company. Still, the company stayed modestly solvent.

Archie Alexander (1888-1958): Civil Engineer and Business ExecutiveBy Dorothy G. Kapenstein◄Continued From Page Twenty

When Alexander was still working for the Marsh Engineering Company, he formed a friendship with a young fellow employee and engineer, George F. Higbee, who was white. Archie had more than enough work to do and he was looking for skilled help. Higbee was looking for a job with good prospects. Archie hired him as a junior partner. The company got a new name. Alexander and Higbee. They worked well together and the firm prospered. A tragic happening in 1925 ended the partnership. Higbee was overseeing one of their construction projects when he was crushed by a steel bridge beam and died from the blow.

The company went back to its original name of A.A. Alexander, Inc. Some good contracts came Alexander’s way at this time, including jobs from his Alma Mater, the State University of Iowa. In 1926, Alexander and his company provided the University with a new heating plant in 1926. Alexander followed this project with a power plant in 1928. Later that year, Alexander and his company finished construction of a system of tunnels under the Iowa River. The tunnel was designed to transport electricity, steam and water to the west side of the campus.

Business got better and better. Once again, Alexander began to look around for a partner to share the work. The man he chose was another old friend of his college days, Maurice A. Repass. They had shared many classes and played on the football team together. Like Alexander’s first partner, John Higbee, Repass was white. Since graduation, he had been teaching mechanics and hydraulics at their Alma Mater. He was looking for a job with more opportunities and the time was right. He became a partner in 1929 and the name of the company became Alexander and Repass. This was the name of the firm until Archie Alexander’s death. From the time Alexander founded the company he had hired both black and white employees. It appears that he wanted the best person for the job and that he did not worry about race. The two partners did not seem to have much trouble with getting clients to hire them for projects. In fact, Charles E. Wynes, writing in the magazine, The Palimpsest, in 1949, quoted Ebony Magazine as saying that Alexander and Repass was the nation’s most successful interracial business.

Working smoothly and efficiently together, Archie Alexander and Maurice Repass obtained some contracts for million dollar projects and completed them efficiently and on time. The projects included a powerhouse in Columbus, Nebraska and a 52 acre sewage treatment plant in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Like every big business, there were hard times as well. In 1935, a big labor dispute hurt the firm badly,

but the partners were able to pull things together again and the firm got back on its feet financially. The firm then did some big jobs for the Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific Railroad, including major construction work on the Golden State Limited Route and important railroad bridges in Iowa and Missouri. Alexander and Repass did some splendid projects in Washington, D.C. Among them were the Tidal Basin Bridge and Sea Wall, and the K Street Elevated Highway. Perhaps their most impressive work in the area was the construction of the Whitehurst Freeway. More than 200 workers took over two years to complete this splendid project. It carried a price tag of $3,350,000. Some sources of information credit the firm of Alexander and Repass with building an airfield at Tuskegee University campus and for building a large apartment house near Washington, D.C. for the National Association of Colored Women. Most historians agree that by 1950, Alexander and Repass had completed more than 300 major constructions all over the (then) 48 states.

With the business growing and prospering, the partners decided to open offices in New York and in Washington. Several commentators write about an ironic development at the new Washington office. At that time our nation’s capital was racially segregated. Alexander was informed that he would have to provide separate drinking fountains and rest room facilities for his black and white employees with appropriate signs that said “white” and “colored.” There was no way Alexander was going to bow to this policy. He figured out a neat solution to the problem. He ordered a huge supply of paper cups and always made sure there were always plenty of them around. The employees were to fill their cups and then walk away to drink from them. In this way, no lips would ever have to touch the drinking fountains. He had signs placed on the bathroom doors. No racial indication appeared on them. Instead, they had the words “Skilled” and “Unskilled” printed on them. Workers could use either one.

Alexander was a devoted supporter of the fight for Civil Rights. He made it a point to serve actively in organizations fighting for the cause. He was closely associated with the NAACP. When a branch was founded in Des Moines he was a charter member. Some years later, in 1944, he became President. In 1940 and 1941, he was President of the Interracial Council of Des Moines. He was on the Board of Directors He was a member of the Board of directors of the local colored YMCA. He served as a trustee of both Tuskegee and Howard Universities. He was a guest speaker at Howard on many occasions.

Alexander was given many honors during his lifetime. In 1926, the Harmon Foundation named him with a bronze Medal for being an outstanding black businessman. In 1934, he was selected to serve on a panel that was set up to study economic and social conditions in Haiti. Howard University gave him an Honorary Doctorate in 1946. The State University held a 100th anniversary celebration in 1947. The University published a list of its 100 most distinguished graduates and Archie Alexander’s name was on the list. These were only some of his honors.

His last honor brought him only bitterness and frustration. Alexander was a lifelong republican from the first time he could vote. He was active in party matters over the years. In 1932, he was Assistant to the Chairman of the State Republican Party and he held the office again in 1940. He played an important role in President Eisenhower’s presidential campaign. President Eisenhower named him governor of the United States Virgin Islands. By this time, Alexander’s health was causing him serious problems. He did not get along well with local officials and people. He resigned after about a year and returned home a very sick man. He never recovered.

In his will, he left his wife a large trust fund for her lifetime. After her death in 1973, whatever money was left in the trust fund was to be shared by his three favorite universities: Howard, Tuskegee and the State University of Iowa. Each university benefited to the tune of $105,000 to be used for engineering scholarships.

PHOTO ID REQUIRED FOR NOVEMBER 2012 ELECTION◄Continued From Page Ten

On March 15, Pennsylvania became the 16th state in the nation to require voters to show photo identification at the polls, starting with the November general election.

To prepare voters for the new requirement, the DOS has a special VotesPA section on its Web site with various FAQ documents that detail the various forms of acceptable ID.

For example, an employee ID issued by a government agency or state institution of higher learning is acceptable if it has an expiration date that is current. Furthermore, a sticker with an expiration date can be affixed to an otherwise acceptable employee ID as long as the sticker is issued by the employer.

Types of acceptable ID must include the person’s name, photograph and an expiration date. This includes a PA driver’ license, PennDOT photo ID cards, U.S. passport, U.S. military ID, an ID from an accredited public or private college or university, employee photo ID issued by a government entity, and an ID cards issued by a Pennsylvania care facility or assisted living residents. Note these are only acceptable if they have an expiration date printed on the ID.

Photo ID is provided by PennDOT for voting purposes if a voter doesn’t already have one. Voters must complete an application plus, to be eligible for a free photo ID, people must complete an affirmation form stating that they do not have a valid ID form and need one for voting purposes.

The new option provided by the Department of State was announced last week when DOS realized that not all people are able to provide the documents necessary to obtain a photo ID from PennDOT. The new cards provide a safety net for those residents. They will be available at PennDOT’s Drivers License Centers beginning the last week of August.

For more information on the Department of State’s new option, people can visit the VotePA site and read Secretary of the Commonwealth Carol Aichele’s announcement from July 20.

“Leading up to the General Election, we will provide information to help residents understand this new law. We plan to conduct outreach to senior centers and through our libraries and human service agencies to ensure that people are informed and can access the necessary identification,” White said. “We don’t want anyone to forgo their right to vote because they can’t access a photo ID.”

Councilman White said senior citizens have already called the Voter Registration and Bureau of Election departments asking about the new law. Many questions are about absentee ballots. There will be new identification requirements for absentee ballots as of November.

Under the new law, voters must provide their driver’s license number, the last four digits of their Social Security number or a copy of an accepted photo ID when applying for an absentee ballot. Voters may provide the identifying information to the county over the phone, by email or mail.

“Our goal is to make this a smooth transition for voters. We are ready to help with your questions,” White said.

The voter ID laws have been facing legal challenges in various states, including Pennsylvania, so it’s important for voters to stay informed throughout the election cycle.

THE FLIGHT OF LARRY WALTERS

A true story.

A few years ago 33-year-old truck driver Larry Walters made national news. Larry had a habit of spending his weekends in his Los Angeles backyard, just south of L.A. International Airport, drinking ... Pepsi ... and eating peanut butter sandwiches. He would sit in his favorite lawn chair staring at the houses around him in the subdivision where he lived. Not a real exciting life.

One day abject boredom prompted Larry Walters to buy some balloons and a tank of helium. He figured on tying the balloons to his lawn chair, filling t hem with helium, and floating up for an aerial view of the neighborhood. He judged he’d get no higher than 100 feet, but just in case, he got out his BB gun and loaded it. He planned to regulate his altitude by shooting out a couple of balloons. I’m not sure how many six packs of...Pepsi...he had consumed when he came to that idea, but he decided it was worth a try.

So Larry Walters of Los Angeles went out and bought 45 big weather balloons, a huge tank of helium, and some rope. First he secured his lawn chair to the ground, then he filled the balloons with helium. One by one he tied them to his lawn chair. Before liftoff he went in the house and got another six-pack of ... Pepsi, a couple of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, and his BB gun. Then he went out and sat in his lawn chair. He had instructed his neighbors to cut the ropes securing the chair when he was ready. “Let’s go!” he yelled, and the ropes were cut.

But he didn’t go 100 feet. He went up 11,000 feet! Shot straight up in the air! And the BB gun? It was useless since he was using both hands to hang on to the chair for dear life.

He zoomed straight up into the landing pattern at L.A. Airport. The pilot of an approaching Continental DC 10 reported that he had just passed a man in a lawn chair, and the control tower told him to report in immediately upon landing. They thought the pilot may have been drinking a little too much ... Pepsi. Can you imagine being a passenger in that plane? “Look, mom, out the window! There’s a man in a lawn chair!”

Eventually they sent up helicopters to rescue Larry Walters. They closed the airport and diverted all landings and takeoffs at LAX while they played tag with this fellow in his lawn chair at 11,000 feet. When they finally got him down, he was surrounded by TV crews, the police, fire and rescue squads, and plenty of curious people. It was a major event.

“Were you scared?” asked one of the TV reporters, thrusting a microphone in his face. “No, not really” said Larry. “Are you going to do it again?” asked another reporter. “No,” said Larry. “What in the world made you do it the first time?”

Larry Walters thought about it for a moment and said, “Well, you can’t just sit there.”

Larry Walters is right. You can’t just sit there. God has something exciting for you to do. Don’t be content to just sit there wasting time, doing nothing. Don’t go through life watching from the sidelines while everyone else plays the game God wants you to be a participant! (John 10:10).

YOU’RE ALWAYS THERE FOR ME

When the world comes crashing inAnd chaos rules my mind,

I turn my heart to you, Lord,And pure, sweet peace I find.

You lift me out of troubleYou comfort me in pain;

You nourish, heal and cleanse me,Like cool, refreshing rain.

In times of joy and bliss,When things are going right,

You lift me even higher,And fill me with delight.

You listen to my prayers; You hear my every plea;I’m safe because I know

You’re always there for me.

POSITIVE THOUGHTS

Men honor what lies within the sphere of their knowledge, but do not realize how dependent they are on what lies beyond it.

Chuang tse

Time is swift, it races by; Opportunities are born and die... Still you wait and will not try… A bird with wings who dares not rise and fly.

Pooh (A.A. Milne)

The world is a spiritual kindergarten, where thousands of bewildered infants are trying to spell GOD with the wrong blocks.

Edward Arlington Robinson

If I have seen farther than other men, it is because I stand on the shoulders of giants.

Isaac Newton

IN THE SMALL STUFF

• You are less likely to fall into temptation if you don’t walk along the edge.

• Always do your job as if your boss were looking over your shoulder.

• Better yet, do your job as if Jesus were standing beside you.

• Jesus kept His promises until it hurt. We should do the same.

• Accept and diligently carry out the commands of those in authority over you.

• Deal with jealousy the moment it enters your life. Otherwise fear will come knocking.
