HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!!

“Message from the Editor”This month’s scripture is from Psalm 136:1-3, “O give thanks unto the LORD; for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever. O give thanks unto the God of gods: for his mercy endureth for ever. O give thanks to the Lord of lords: for his mercy endureth for ever.” THANKS!!. Start your day by thanking the Lord. Thank Him for waking you up this morning. Thank Him that you able to get out of bed. Thank Him for allowing you to go on your merry way. Your day will be more fulfilled when you do. If we did more praying, praising, and thanking and less complaining and rebelling, we would be much happier. We must not forget what the Lord has done for us, for his mercy endures forever. Take the time. Make the time. Thank the Lord for all He has done for you. It will not only honor God, but will bless your life too. God’s people can face anything, (whether good news or bad news), because we have our utmost trust in God. He helps us through whatever the situation or circumstance; broken marriages, unemployment, sickness, and death just to name a few. Now that’s something for which we can thank and praise the Lord. We must serve God unconditionally. There is only one way to live. And that is to let love, joy, prayer, and thanksgiving be a daily part of your routine. Leave hate, unhappiness, unworthiness behind. When we are not thankful, we become angry and bitter. We start blaming God. Things happen to us for a reason. God wants our full attention. God is in control of all things. We have to make ourselves better. God can help us. And one way to do that is by change. Keep in mind the serenity prayer: God grant me the SERENITY to accept the things I cannot change, the COURAGE to change the things I can, and the WISDOM to know the difference. May God Continue to Bless Everyone this Thanksgiving Holiday.

We hope everyone enjoyed the October 2012 issue of the Church Chat, where we celebrated 200 issues. However, all praise, all honor, and all glory, belong to God, without Him, the Church Chat would not be possible. Thank you for the many, many compliments and words of encouragement.

8 TIPS FOR ELEMENTARY SCHOOL SUCCESSby Suzanne Koup-Larsen and Susan Stopper Research shows that parent support is more important to school success than a child’s IQ, economic status or school setting, according to the U.S. Department of Education. But how can you most effectively nurture your budding young student? Here are Delaware Valley educators’ tips for elementary school success.

1. Think Long TermWe know students need to learn reading, writing and math skills in elementary school, but to succeed throughout their school years, the two things they really need to know are study skills and how to learn. “As a parent, help your child develop effective study skills and strategies for time management,” says Kelly Goula, Lower School director at Moorestown Friends School in Moorestown, NJ. This will help her learn any subject.

2. Have the Right AttitudeParents should show excitement and enthusiasm for their child’s school, says Jarrettown (PA) Elementary School Principal Cheryl Arena-Malfi, EdD. “This will put the child in a positive frame of mind to come to school and be successful,” she says. Conversely, unkind words about the child’s school or teacher can have a negative effect on a young student’s mindset.

“If you want your children to be interested in their school, you have to be interested in their school and in the subjects they are studying,” says MaryKat Parks Workinger, editorial director at EduGuide, a national non-profit organization that provides resources to support student achievement.

Volunteer in their classroom if you can. But more importantly, ask your children what they’re doing in school, discuss the topics they’re studying and talk about how they’re handling assigned projects.

“When children see that their parents are interested, it shows them there is value in what they’re doing,” says Elly Alexander, a librarian and classroom teacher at Albert Einstein Academy in Wilmington, DE.

3. Communicate“It is critically important to build a relationship with your children’s teachers,” says Workinger. Try to meet with teachers briefly in the first few weeks of the school year.

“Communicate with the teacher often,” says Debbie Panchisin, EdD, director of elementary curriculum for Appoquinimink School District in Odessa, DE. You can get in touch by e-mail, notes, phone calls or face-to-face.

A parent might recognize a problem sooner than the teacher. “Teachers truly appreciate things being brought to their attention,” says Beth Kessler,

a 4th grade teacher in Bucks County, PA. “There are sides of the educational experience that come out at home that teachers might not see. The most important thing is that the parents approach the education of their child with the teacher as a team effort and a common goal.”

Also, “if your child has a physical, social, or academic challenge, explain it briefly in a note. This kind of personal contact tells teachers that you are involved, that you value them, and that you are open to discussions about your child’s weaknesses, as well as his or her strengths,” says Workinger.

THE KEY OF OUR FAITH

Since Jesus died and broke loose from the grave, God will most certainly bring back to life those who die in Jesus.

1 THESSALONIANS 4: 14 MSG

For ... any follower of Christ, the promise is simply this: The resurrection of Jesus is proof and preview of our own.

But can we trust the promise? Is the resurrection a reality? Are the claims of the empty tomb true? This is not only a good question. It is the question. For as Paul wrote, “If Christ has not been raised, then your faith has nothing to it; you are still guilty of your sins” (l Cor.I5:17). In other words, if Christ has been raised, then his followers will join him; but if not, then his followers are fools. The resurrection, then, is the keystone in the arch of the Christian faith.

FOR THE FAMILYThe Word of God establishes the family as the most important Christian social unit in our society and gives us guidance for proper relationships so that we might be everything God chooses for us, both individually and corporately. These scriptures will help you learn more about the promises for your family, God’s guidance for a better family relationship, and how God truly wants to bless and direct every Christian family for His glory.

GOD GUIDES IN YOUR RELATIONSHIPS

“WITH THE POOR”

And whosoever shall give to drink unto one of these little ones a cup of cold water only in the name of a disciple, verily I say unto you, he shall in no wise lose his reward.

Matthew 10:42

But this I say, He which soweth sparingly shall reap also sparingly; and he which soweth bountifully shall reap also bountifully. Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver. And God is able to make all grace abound toward you; that ye, always having all sufficiency in all things, may abound to every good work: (As it is written, He hath dispersed abroad; he hath given to the poor: his righteousness remaineth for ever. Now he that ministereth seed to the sower both minister bread for your food, and multiply your seed sown, and increase the fruits of your righteousness;)

PASTOR GARTH G. GITTENSFOCUS ON THE FAMILY NIGHT

I am of the firm opinion that the root cause of breakdown in our communities is a breakdown in our families and it’s time for the church to return it’s focus on family life and family values. To this end Wednesday nights at Calvary are about to change, instead of Bible Study as usual Wednesday nights are now titled “Focus On The Family Nights”.

7:00 – 7:30 pm During this time we gather in the upper sanctuary for praise and worship. The idea at this time is twofold: to allow our praise and worship team to introduce the congregation to new praise songs and simultaneously to allow members of our community who work on Sundays an opportunity to worship with us.

7:35 – 8:25 pmThis is our Education hour: we break up into specially designed classes for the purpose of practice oriented Bible Study.

IS IT A STROKE?Part Two of a Two Part Series

Stroke: Emergency TreatmentFor an ischemic stroke, emergency treatment focuses on medicine to restore blood flow. A clot-busting medication is highly effective at dissolving clots and minimizing long-term damage, but it must be given within three hours of the onset of symptoms. Hemorrhagic strokes are more difficult to manage. Treatment usually involves attempting to control high blood pressure, bleeding, and brain swelling.

Stroke: Long-Term DamageWhether a stroke causes long-term damage depends on its severity and how quickly treatment stabilizes the brain. The type of damage depends on where in the brain the stroke occurs. Common problems after a stroke include numbness in the arms or legs, difficulty walking, vision problems, trouble swallowing, and problems with speech and comprehension. These problems can be permanent, but many people regain most of their abilities.

Stroke Rehab: Speech TherapyRehabilitation is the centerpiece of the stroke recovery process. It helps patients regain lost skills and learn to compensate for damage that can’t be undone. The goal is to help restore as much independence as possible. For people who have trouble speaking, speech and language therapy is essential. A speech therapist can also help patients who have trouble swallowing.

Stroke Rehab: Physical TherapyMuscle weakness, as well as balance problems, are very common after a stroke. This can interfere with walking and other daily activities. Physical therapy is an effective way to regain strength, balance, and coordination. For fine motor skills, such as using a knife and fork, writing, and buttoning a shirt, occupational therapy can help.

Stroke Rehab: Talk TherapyIt’s common for stroke survivors and their loved ones to experience a wide range of intense emotions, such as fear, anger, worry, and grief. A psychologist or mental health counselor can provide strategies for coping with these emotions. A therapist can also watch for signs of depression, which frequently strikes people who are recovering from a stroke.

Stroke Prevention: LifestylePeople who have had a stroke or TIA can take steps to prevent a recurrence:

1. Quit smoking.2. Exercise and maintain a

healthy weight.3. Limit alcohol and salt intake.4. Eat a healthier diet with more

veggies, fish, and whole grains.

Stroke Prevention: MedicationsFor people with a high risk of stroke, doctors often recommend medications to lower this risk. Anti-platelet medicines, including aspirin, keep platelets in the blood from sticking together and forming clots. Anti-clotting drugs, such as warfarin, may be needed to help ward off stroke in some patients. Finally, if you have high blood pressure, your doctor will prescribe medication to lower it.

Stroke Prevention: SurgeryIn some cases, a stroke results from a narrowed carotid artery -- the blood vessels that travel up each side of the neck to bring blood to the brain. People who have had a mild stroke or TIA due to this problem may benefit from surgery known as carotid endarterectomy. This procedure removes plaque from the lining of the carotid arteries and can prevent additional strokes.

Stroke Prevention: Balloon and StentDoctors can also treat a clogged carotid artery without major surgery in some cases. The procedure, called

angioplasty, involves temporarily inserting a catheter into the artery and inflating a tiny balloon to widen the area that is narrowed by plaque. A metal tube, called a stent, can be inserted and left in place to keep the artery open.

Life After a StrokeMore than half of people who have a stroke regain the ability to take care of themselves. Those who get clot-busting drugs soon enough may recover completely. And those who experience disability can often learn to function independently through therapy. While the risk of a second stroke is higher at first, this risk drops off over time.

25 FOODS THAT FIGHT FATPart One of a Four Part Series

1. Greek YogurtWhat makes Greek yogurt a delicious tool for weight loss is its protein content. It has twice as much as other yogurts. “Protein takes longer to leave the stomach,” says sports nutritionist Leslie Bonci, MPH, RD. “That keeps you satisfied longer.” As a bonus, Bonci tells WebMD, the body burns more calories digesting protein than carbs. Non-fat, low-fat, and low-sugar types keep a slim profile.

2. QuinoaQuinoa (pronounced keen-wa) is a nutritional all-star that belongs in your weight loss plan. This whole grain has 8 grams of hunger-busting protein and 5 grams of fiber in one cup, plus it’s as easy to cook as rice. It’s also packed with nutrients such as iron, zinc, selenium, and vitamin E. For a quick and interesting dinner, mix in some vegetables, nuts, or lean protein.

THE RICHES OF A GOOD NAME

A good name is to be more desired than great riches.

Proverbs 22:1

Are you trusted by your mate, by your friends and by your children? Are you reliable? Do you fulfill your promises to your children?

My dad, “Hook” Rainey, was a man whose quiet, soft-spoken faith and rock-solid integrity won him a good name in our rural community nestled in the Ozark Mountains of southern Missouri. I learned about that reputation forcefully one year during high school when I began selling magazine subscriptions to raise money for our senior project.

Without delay I made several sales to my numerous aunts and uncles. However, my pace slowed considerably when I began soliciting subscriptions door-to-door. I was discouraged and about to head for home when I tried one more home. I was hurriedly rattling off my canned sales pitch when the old man interrupted me: “Son, what did you say your name was?”

“Dennis Rainey, sir.”

“Are you Hook Rainey’s son?” he asked with a slight grin.

The old man’s etched face immediately brightened when I answered, “Why, yes-he’s my dad.”

“Well, come on in!” he beamed as he unhooked the screen door and swung it open. He proceeded to buy two magazine subscriptions.

I was no fool, so from then on I always let people know at the outset that I was Hook Rainey’s son. I eventually set a record for sales!

For many years afterwards I thought Dennis Rainey had won that magazine sales contest. It wasn’t until Dad’s death that I realized what had really happened. It was Hook Rainey’s character that had given me the victory. Without knowing it, my dad had followed Charles Spurgeon’s wise counsel: “Carve your name on the hearts, and not on marble.”

Discuss: What does the word integrity mean to you? Are you a man of your word? Pray: That the presence of God’s Spirit in your life will be so real you would never think of acting with anything but spiritual integrity.

MARRIAGE HUMOR

THE PAINTINGA woman decided to have her portrait painted. She told the artist, “Paint me with diamond rings, a diamond necklace, emerald bracelets, a ruby broach, and gold Rolex.” “But you are not wearing any of those things,” he replied. “I know,” she said. “It’s in case I should die before my husband. I’m sure he will remarry right away, and I want his new wife to go crazy looking for the jewelry.”

THE WRONG WISHA married couple, both 60 years old, were celebrating their 35th anniversary. During their party, a fairy appeared to congratulate them and grant them each one wish. The wife wanted to travel around the world. The fairy waved her wand and poof - the wife had tickets in her hand for a world cruise.

Next, the fairy asked the husband what he wanted. He said; “I wish I had a wife 30 years younger than me.” So then the fairy picked up her wand and poof - the husband was 90.

GOD CAN HANDLE IT ….MARRIAGEBy Dr. S. M. Henriques

WHEN ADVERSITY COMESMany years ago, William Shakespeare penned, “Love is an ever-fixed mark that looks on tempests and is never shaken.” We agree. Love is the one thing that enables us to keep pushing forward when everything else is crumbling around us.

If the love of a husband and wife is true, the appearance of adversity actually strengthens their love. Gary Smalley has written, “Suffering has a way of bringing people together; the most important things on earth come into sharper focus.”

Since none of us are exempt from trouble, let us prepare ourselves in advance, knowing that adversity can make a marriage stronger.

Renew your commitment - especially when the going gets hard.

Neil Clark Warren

Let us hold firmly to the hope that we have confessed, because we can trust God to do what he promised.

COMCAST INTERNET ESSENTIALS PROGRAM

• About 30% of Americans—many of whom are living below the poverty line—remain on the wrong side of the digital divide. Research consistently shows that the barriers to broadband adoption involve a complex mix of low digital literacy, perceived lack of relevance of online content and the need for low-cost, good-quality computers and Internet service. Internet Essentials is intended to address all of these critical hurdles to broadband adoption.• Internet Essentials is not just another Comcast product or service. It represents the largest and most comprehensive broadband adoption program anywhere in America and provides low-cost broadband service for $9.95 a month; the option to purchase a full-service, Internet-ready computer for under $150; and multiple options for digital literacy training in print, online and in-person.• The Internet Essentials program has three principal components:• Low Cost Internet Service: Internet Essentials provides eligible low-income families in the Comcast service area affordable access to high-speed Internet service from their home. For only $9.95 per month – around 33 cents a day – eligible families receive Comcast’s XFINITY Internet Economy Service with no monthly equipment fees, installation charges or activation fees,

representing a discount of at least $27.00 a month or over 70% off regular charges for this service. In addition, Internet Essentials families are not subject to standard credit checks and are not asked or required to sign any contracts to take the service for a specified period of time.• Discounted Computers: As part of Internet Essentials, Comcast offers eligible families the opportunity to purchase a full-service, Internet-capable computer for under $150, substantially below retail. Working with our partners, including Microsoft, we offer fully loaded computers with Internet Explorer and productivity software. We also provide the Norton Security Suite, a $160 value, at no additional charge to ensure that Internet Essentials users have a secure online experience.• Digital Literacy: Internet Essentials customers receive access to print, online and in-person digital literacy training free of charge. These digital literacy materials are the first step in helping those who have not been connected understand the value, relevance and the ease of use of the Internet.• In addition, once we help families get online, we want them to stay online. Any household that qualifies during the initial three-year enrollment period will remain eligible for the discounted price so long as at least one child in the household continues to meet the program’s National School Lunch Program eligibility test. As long as they remain eligible, participating families will be able to benefit from Internet Essentials throughout their child’s K-12 education.• To qualify for Internet Essentials, a household must:

1. Reside in a location where Comcast offers Internet service;

2. Have at least one child receiving free or reduced price lunches through the National School Lunch Program;

3. Have not subscribed to Comcast Internet service within the last 90 days; and

4. Not have an overdue Comcast bill or unreturned equipment.

JOKE FOR YOUR SOUL

DRIVING PERMIT

A young boy had just gotten his driving permit. He asked his father, who was a minister, if they could discuss the use of the car. His father took him to his study and said to him, “I’ll make a deal with you. You bring your grades up, study your Bible a little and get your hair cut and we’ll talk about it.” After about a month the boy came back and again asked his father if they could discuss use of the car. They again went to the father’s study where his father said, “Son, I’ve been real proud of you. You have brought your grades up, you’ve studied your Bible diligently, but you didn’t get your hair cut!” The young man waited a moment and replied, “You know Dad, I’ve been thinking about that. You know, Samson had long hair, Moses had long hair, Noah had long hair, and even Jesus had long hair....” To which his father replied,”Yes, and they walked every where they went!”

MEETING JONAHThere was this Christian lady that had to do a lot of traveling for her business so she did a lot of flying. But flying made her nervous so she always took her Bible along with her to read and it helped relax her. One time she was sitting next to a man and when he saw her pull out her Bible he gave a little chuckle and went back to what he was doing. After a while he turned to her and asked, “You don’t really believe all that stuff in there do you?” The lady replied, “Of course I do...it is the Bible.” He said, “Well, what about that guy that was swallowed by that whale? She replied, “Oh, Jonah. Yes, I believe that, it is in the Bible. He asked, “Well, how do you suppose he survived all that time inside the whale?” The lady said, “Well, I don’t really know. I guess when I get to heaven I will ask him.” “What if he isn’t in heaven?” the man asked sarcastically. “Then you can ask him,” replied the lady.

DAILY PRAISE FROMTHE BIBLE

Inspiration from the PsalmsBy Dan Dick

O give thanks to the Lord of lords: for his mercy endureth for ever….To him which divided the Red sea into parts: for his mercy endureth for ever.

Psalm 136:3, 13

Tracey sat thinking about her troubles. Her mother kept telling her to pray about them, but she didn’t know whether that would do any good or not. She wanted to believe, but it seemed a little far-fetched to think praying would really do anything. She wasn’t even sure that her prayers got through.

Doubt is a killer. It kills faith. Our God is the God who freed the Hebrew people from captivity in Egypt. He parted the waters and let the chosen people through before washing away the Egyptian army. If God could handle the trials of an entire people,

then He can handle what we lift up to Him. Give thanks to the Lord, and trust Him with your every thought. His mercy does endure forever.

PRAYER: Hear me, Lord, as 1 pray for your guidance and help in my life. 1 cannot handle all of the problems that come my way, and 1 need to know You stand with me. Give me that assurance. Amen.

WHAT JESUS IS SAYING TO YOU

By Peter Wallace

I am Alpha and Omega, the one who is and was and is coming. I am God All-Powerful!

-Revelation 1:8

Jesus, the risen Lord and Savior, introduces Himself in the opening

verses of the book of Revelation, written by the apostle John.He is Alpha and Omega-the first and last letters of the Greek alphabet. The Beginning and the End. The eternal, the everlasting. The One who is over all from start to finish and beyond.

He is past, present, and future-the One who was and is and will be.

He is almighty-the all-powerful One.

He already knows your past. He is with you in your present struggles. He will always be with you in the future.

And still He loves you.

Knowing this, what is there in your life that you couldn’t trust Him with?

GOD’S PROMISES FOR MENThe Word of God doesn’t tell us about the truth; it is truth.

Charles Swindoll

GOD GIVES FREELY TO MEN“Wisdom for Each Day”

Get wisdom! Get understanding! Do not forget, nor turn away from the words of my mouth. Do not forsake her, and she will preserve you; Love her, and she will keep you. Wisdom is the principal thing; Therefore get wisdom. And in all your getting, get understanding. Exalt her, and she will promote you; She will bring you honor, when you embrace her. She will place on your head an ornament of grace; A crown of glory she will deliver to you. Hear, my son, and receive my sayings, And the years of your life will be many. I have taught you in the way of wisdom; I have led you in right paths.

Proverbs 4:5-11

However, we speak wisdom among those who are mature, yet not the wisdom of this age, nor of the rulers of this age, who are coming to nothing. But we speak the wisdom of God in a

mystery, the hidden wisdom which God ordained before the ages for our glory, which none of the rulers of this age knew; for had they known, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.

1 Corinthians 2:6-8

Happy is the man who finds wisdom, And the man who gains understanding; For her proceeds are better than the profits of silver, And her gain than fine gold. She is more precious than rubies, And all the things you may desire cannot compare with her. Length of days is in her right hand, In her left hand riches and honor. Her ways are ways of pleasantness, And all her paths are peace. She is a tree of life to those who take hold of her, And happy are all who retain her. The LORD by wisdom founded the earth; By understanding He established the heavens; By His knowledge the depths were broken up, And clouds drop down the dew. My son, let them not depart from your eyes- Keep sound wisdom and discretion; So they will be life to your soul And grace to your neck.

Proverbs 3:13-22

REMEMBERING TO PRAY

“Ask and it shall be given,”So the Lord would have you pray,“Seek and you will surely find,”

For He will show the way.

“Knock and it shall be opened.”Do you think God is aboutTo turn His back upon you,

Knowing all you are without?

We are as little childrenIn this valley full of tears,

We need His love to guide us,Giving meaning through the years.

For to cross life’s troubled waters,There is no better way,

Than clinging tightly to His arm... And remembering to pray!

WHY IS IT SO HARD TO ACCEPT CHANGE?

Change brings challenges. Even when seated on a soft cushion, if you don’t change your position occasionally, you become uncomfortable. Even changes from worse to better may bruise you. Think how hard it is for you to change yourself, and you’ll understand the difficulty in changing an entire society.

Like clocks, successful business, people, and communities run down unless they’re rewound.

Little men with little minds and imagination jog through life in little ruts, smugly resisting all changes which would jar their little worlds.Marie Fraser

BIBLE SECRETS FORSUCCESSFUL LIVING

FAITHFULNESS

For I know that my redeemer liveth, and that he shall stand at the latter day upon the earth: And though after my skin worms destroy this body, yet in my flesh shall I see God: Job 19:25-26

Real people of God have confidence in the Lord regardless of their circumstances. This is real faith.

Thou shalt make no covenant with them, nor with their gods. Exodus 23:32

No matter how appealing, don’t compromise your commitment to the Lord. God will bless your faithfulness to Him.

HOW TO PRAISE THE LORDPRAISE ye the LORD. Praise God in his sanctuary: praise him in the firmament of his power. Praise him for his mighty acts: praise him according to his excellent greatness. Praise him with the sound of the trumpet: praise him with the psaltery and harp. Praise him with the timbrel and dance: praise him with stringed instruments and organs. Praise him upon the loud cymbals; praise him upon the high sounding cymbals. Let every thing that hath breath praise the Lord. Praise ye the LORD.

TRUST MORE -- FEAR LESSBy Max Lucado

On the evening of that first day of the week, when the disciples were together, with the doors locked for fear of the Jews... JOHN 20:19 NIV

The church of Jesus Christ began with a group of frightened men in a second-floor room in Jerusalem. Though trained and taught, they didn’t know what to say. Though they’d marched with him for three years, they now sat ... afraid. They were timid soldiers, reluctant warriors, and speechless messengers. Their most courageous act was to get up and lock the door.

Some looked out the window, some looked at the wall, some looked at the floor, but all looked inside themselves. And well they should, for it was an hour of self-examination. All their efforts seemed so futile. Nagging their memories were the promises they’d made but not kept. When the Roman soldiers took Jesus, Jesus’ followers took off. With the very wine of the covenant on their breath and the bread of his sacrifice in their bellies, they fled.

INVITATION

The comfort and peace are offered to everyone who trusts in Jesus Christ. He takes care of His own and promises to stay close through all of life’s ups and downs.

Here are four steps to begin or maintain a relationship with Jesus-not only during sickness, but also when health returns and life becomes busy again:

1. Read the Bible-every day! God wrote the Bible for you. Spend time listening to what He has to say.

2. Talk to God-every day. God is here, right now, ready to listen. Just tell Him what’s on your mind.

3. Keep it up. When you are not feeling well, it’s difficult to read the Bible and pray. But try. God wants to share your pains and sorrows.

4. Let others know. Sickness can bring growth if you use the time to nurture your relationship with God. And you can help others by sharing how talking and listening to God helped you.

THE BIBLE SAYS…[Jesus says,] “I tell you the truth, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be condemned; he has crossed over from death to life.”

John 5:24

[Jesus says,] “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”

Matthew 11:28

Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God ....

MEN OF THE BIBLEBy Dan Hannon

JOEL

Joel

Locusts!

The plague that swept through Israel around the fifth century B.C. was one of the most dramatic in Old Testament history. God used it to punish His sinful people and through the prophet Joel promised His forgiveness if they changed their ways.

Joel likened the locusts to a hostile army, a nation, and “a people great and strong.” Far too many to be counted, the locusts were laying waste the land of Israel which once had been as fruitful as the Garden of Eden. These locusts got Israel’s attention and then Joel sounded the alarm. Hopefully the Israelites would listen to his warning of judgment day.

Joel prophesied that when Israel repented God would bless them again by sending His Holy Spirit. Their descendants would be prophets and visionaries. Their enemies would be punished and the faithful would be saved. He spoke of the day of judgment when the sun would be darkened, the moon turned to blood, and enemy nations would lie desolate. But God’s people would find refuge in a land where the mountains “drop down with sweet wine” and the hills “flow with milk.”

Joel’s is a prophecy of stark contrasts-light and darkness, good and evil, struggles in punishment and rest in God’s presence.

IT ALL HAPPENED SO FASTSubmitted in Memory of

Sis. Priscilla Young

A snail crossing the road was run over by a turtle. Regaining consciousness in the emergency room, he was asked what caused the accident. “I really can’t remember,” the snail answered. “You see, it all happened so fast.” We laugh because turtles and snails aren’t known for their speed. However, speed is rather relative. To a snail, a turtle is probably like a gazelle.

How fast is your life moving? Doesn’t it seem like it is moving at breakneck speed? Just yesterday, it seems, we were graduating, getting married, or expecting a baby. Today, we are at the half-way point of our careers, we have been married for 20+, and our children are preteens or teens. If we are not careful, we will look back one day and wonder what happened. We need to slow down and take stock of what is really important. I believe that this is especially true when it comes to our children. I have known countless parents who looked back and wondered what happened to their children. For sure, there are no guarantees in raising children. Once children reach adulthood, they make their own choices, and they may not make the right choices, no matter how they have been taught. However, it is easy in our fast-paced world to let the years roll by without giving our children what they really need. We need to redeem the time, because the days are evil (Ephesians 5:16). We need to walk wisely, not run foolishly (Colossians 4:5). There is more to raising children than putting a roof over their heads, clothes on their backs, and food in their bellies. There is more to parenting than getting them fed and in bed. They need time and teaching (Deuteronomy 6:6-9), discipline and direction (Proverbs 19:18; Ephesians 6:1-4), affection and affirmation (Titus 2:4). One day, how much time we spent at the office will not matter nearly as much as how much time we spent with our children. Nor, for that matter, will it compensate us as well. I have never heard a single person say, “I wish I had spent more time at the office.” However, I have heard many say, “I wish I had spent more time at home.” —Wade Webster, Southaven, MS (story adapted from McManis, Charles. As quoted in “Laughter, the Best Medicine.” Reader’s Digest, 1997, p. 210).

SENIOR VERSION OF JESUS LOVES ME

92 YEAR OLD PREACHER

While watching a little TV on Sunday instead of going to church, I watched a church in Atlanta honoring one of its senior pastors who had been retired many years. He was 92 at that time and I wondered why the church even bothered to ask the old gentleman to preach at that age. After a warm welcome, introduction of this speaker, and as the applause quieted down, he rose from his high back chair and walked slowly, with great effort and a sliding gait to the podium. Without a note or written paper of any kind he placed both hands on the podium to steady himself and then quietly and slowly he began to speak....

“When I was asked to come here today and talk to you, your pastor asked me to tell you what was the greatest lesson ever learned in my 50-odd years of preaching. I thought about it for a few days and boiled it down to just one thing that made the most difference in my life and sustained me through all my trials. The one thing that I could always rely on when tears and heartbreak and pain and fear and sorrow paralyzed me...The only thing that would comfort was this verse...

“Jesus loves me this I know.For the Bible tells me so.Little ones to Him belong,We are weak but He is strong.....Yes, Jesus loves me....The Bible tells me so.”

The old pastor stated, “I always noticed that it was the adults who chose the children’s hymn ‘Jesus Loves Me’ (for the children of course) during a hymn sing, and it was the adults who sang the loudest because I could see they knew it the best.”

“Here for you now is a Senior version of Jesus Loves Me”:

JESUS LOVES ME

Jesus loves me, this I know,Though my hair is white as snowThough my sight is growing dim,Still He bids me trust in Him.(CHORUS)YES, JESUS LOVES ME.. YES, JESUS LOVES ME..YES, JESUS LOVES ME, FOR THE BIBLE TELLS ME SO.

Though my steps are oh, so slow,With my hand in His I’ll goOn through life, let come what may,He’ll be there to lead the way.(CHORUS)

When the nights are dark and long,In my heart He puts a song..Telling me in words so clear,“Have no fear, for I am near.”(CHORUS)

When my work on earth is done,And life’s victories have been won.He will take me home above,Then I’ll understand His love.(CHORUS)

I love Jesus, does He know?Have I ever told Him so?Jesus loves to hear me say,That I love Him every day.(CHORUS)

DRINK, STEAL, SWEAR AND LIE

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I met this guy while I was in Albuquerque and he has a motto he lives by every day.
He said listen carefully and live by these 4 rules: Drink, Steal, Swear, & Lie.
I was shaking my head no, but he told me to listen while he explained his four rules.
So here they are:1. ‘Drink’ from the ‘everlasting cup’ every day. 2. ‘Steal’ a moment to help someone that is in worse shape than you are.3. ‘Swear’ that you will be a better person today than yesterday.4. And last, but not least, when you ‘lie’ down at night thank God for your blessings.
I am not as good as I could be, but THANK GOD I am better than I used to be!I am thankful.
HONOR OUR MILITARYFOR VETERAN DAY
NOVEMBER 11, 2012
Let’s honor our military,The men and women who serve,Whose dedication to our countryDoes not falter, halt or swerve.
Let’s respect them for their courage;They’re ready to do what’s right
To keep America safe,So we can sleep better at night.
Let’s support and defend our soldiers,Whose hardships are brutal and cruel,Whose discipline we can’t imagine,
Who follow each order and rule.
Here’s to those who choose to be warriors
And their helpers good and true;They’re fighting for American values;
They’re fighting for me and you.
www.poemsource.com8 TIPS FOR ELEMENTARY SCHOOL SUCCESS◄Continued From Page Five
4. Stick to RoutinesIn the morning, make sure your children wake up at a consistent time every day and eat breakfast. Strive for consistency in their nighttime routine too. Advise your children that “if you make sure your backpack is ready the night before, you’re not scrambling the next morning and you start the day off right,” says Vicki Dugan, a 1st grade teacher at Ashbrook Elementary School in Lumberton, NJ.
Kids benefit from a consistent homework routine, including a regular time of day and comfortable workplace. Keep school supplies in a small box near the child’s homework spot, Dugan suggests.
5. Support Strengths“Recognize and encourage strengths,” says Genes Marquez, a teacher at the Montessori Academy of New Jersey in Delran, NJ. There is a tendency sometimes to focus only on areas where children need extra help. Emphasizing children’s strengths and helping them develop their areas of interest builds self-esteem and keeps kids motivated.
“Support their interests,” says Marquez. “That’s when great things happen.” Look for opportunities to expand on learning outside the classroom. If your child is interested in space, take him to a museum with a space exhibit or a planetarium. If he is interested in animals, take him to the zoo.
If you devote time to a problem learning area, continue emphasizing your child’s strengths. It is important that a child understands that struggling in one area doesn’t mean he is a poor student.
6. Be a Reading and Writing Role ModelIt’s important to show students that adults use reading and writing skills every day. Demonstrate those skills by reading, even if it’s just street signs or directions; write for your children, even if it’s just a note tucked in with lunch. “Let them see that schooling goes beyond 8:30am to 2:30pm,” advises Patricia Scott, EdD, principal of St. Edmond’s Academy in Wilmington, DE.
“When the foundations of reading are in place, everything else falls into place more easily,” says Kessler. “Read with your child, alongside your child, and even on your own to model the importance of it.”
“Take your children to the library from a young age,” says Alexander. “The kids who are comfortable with books tend to be the successful kids.”
7. Demonstrate RelevanceHelp your children see that what they learn in school is useful and relevant to their life. Workinger says, “If they are studying fractions, the next time you are baking, show them how measuring cups and spoons divide ingredients and talk about how important it is to know the difference between a quarter cup and two-thirds of a cup — the difference between delicious and yuck!”
8. Support Homework Independence“I don’t advocate parents sitting with their child to do homework,” says Goula. Learning independence and responsibility is an important lesson of the elementary school years, and homework is key to this process.
Have a pre-homework chat to summarize assignments and to review directions. After this brief meeting, slip away, but check back later to see if there are any questions or problems. Above all, let the child work on his own.
101 RESOLUTIONS FOR THE NEW YEARBy Nancy Walker Hale
84 I will strive to meet the potential that God had in mind when He created me.
And he died for all, that those who live should no longer live for themselves but for him who died for them and was raised again. So from now on we regard no one from a worldly point of view. Though we once regarded Christ in this way, we do so no longer. Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!
2 CORINTHIANS 5:15-17 NIV
85 I will back up my convictions with appropriate actions.
If anyone has material possessions and sees his brother in need but has no pity on him, how can the love of God be in him? Dear children, let us not love with words or tongue but with actions and in truth. This then is how we know that we belong to the truth, and how we set our hearts at rest in his presence.
HEMAP HAS BEEN REINSTATED
The Pennsylvania Housing Finance Agency (PHFA) is now accepting applications from struggling homeowners for the newly reinstated Homeowners Emergency Mortgage Assistance Program (HEMAP).
For nearly 30 years, HEMAP provided emergency mortgage assistance to more than 46,000 Pennsylvania families who, through no fault of their own, are in danger of losing their homes to foreclosure.
HEMAP was eliminated in 2011 but was just recently reinstated utilizing a portion of the settlement money that the state is receiving from a joint federal-state agreement with the nation’s five largest mortgage servicers.
Call PHFA toll-free during weekday business hours at 1-800-342-2397.
SOCIAL SECURITY OFFICES TO CLOSE / MOVE
The Social Security Administration has discontinued service at its Woodland Avenue office and has moved its West Philadelphia office. Residents of zip codes 19101,19104,19131,19139,19142,19143,19151, 19153, 19190 should visit the Philadelphia University City office for face-to-face services. The new office is located at 4240 Market Street. Office hours at the new location will be 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, except Federal holidays.
Most Social Security services do not require a visit to an office for a face-to-face interview. For example, anyone wishing to apply for social security benefits, sign up for direct deposit, replace a Medicare card,
obtain a proof of income letter or inform the office of a change of address or telephone number may do so at their secure website www.socialsecurity.gov.
LUNCHEON FOR SENIORSThe Seniors Ministry will host a “Luncheon For Seniors” on Saturday, November 17, 2012 – 12:00pm to 3:00pm in the Talmadge Fellowship Hall. Important information for Seniors from “Alzheimer’s Association”, “CARIE Advocacy & Transportation”, “Crime & Violence Prevention-Home Invasions”, “Fire Prevention Practices”, and “Comfort & Grief Counseling”. To register, please call Sis. Mary Wellons at 215-747-9979 or fill out a Registration Form and leave it in the Church Office 6142 Haverford Avenue. Deadline is Sunday, November 4, 2012.
SENIOR MOMENTSHospital regulations require a wheel chair for patients being discharged. However, while working as a student nurse, I found one elderly gentleman already dressed and sitting on the bed with a suitcase at his feet, who insisted he didn’t need my help to leave the hospital.
After a chat about rules being rules, he reluctantly let me wheel him to the elevator.
On the way down I asked him if his wife was meeting him.
‘I don’t know,’ he said. ‘She’s still upstairs in the bathroom changing out of her hospital gown.’
Three old guys are out walking. First one says, ‘Windy, isn’t it?’ Second one says, ‘No, it’s Thursday!’ Third one says, ‘So am I. Let’s go get something coffee.’
Dorothy Boulding Ferebee (1898-1980): Physician and ActivistBy Dorothy G. Kapenstein
When Dorothy Boulding Ferebee’s life began, this nation was in the grip of a fierce and ugly attitude of racial and gender prejudice. She devoted her long life to fighting for
honest and equal rights for all people, with a strong emphasis on the rights of Black women. By the end of her life, she was able to rejoice as she saw many of her lifelong endeavors crowned with success. After the end of the Civil War, African Americans began a slow and powerful struggle to gain the basic rights of American Citizens that were being denied to them. These included the right to vote and to hold public office, the right to first class education, the right to decent housing and the right to get jobs fairly. We should remember Native Americans, Hispanics, Asian Americans and religious minorities like Jews often suffered from the same harsh conditions.
Women of all races were crushed by a double weight of unfairness. No woman of any race or ethnic minority could vote in this nation until 1920! For the most part, women were ineligible to run for or hold public office. Until a relatively late time in our history, women could not own properties or businesses. Only the most menial jobs were usually open to them. It was made extremely difficult for women to aspire to higher education or to get training for professions like law or medicine. It was difficult for white women, but some succeeded. For their Black sisters, it was like going to bat in a baseball game with two strikes
already on you before you even stepped up to the plate, but some succeeded! However, it was never easy. Dorothy Ferebee was one of the women who chose to fight for a place in what was considered a profession for men, and for the most part a profession for white men. She succeeded in reaching her goals but she never stopped fighting for others.
Dorothy Celeste Boulding Ferebee was born in Norfolk, Virginia. She was the daughter of Benjamin Boulding and his wife, Florence Ruffin Boulding. Dorothy Boulding was related to the distinguished Ruffin family of Massachusetts. Her uncle, George L. Ruffin, was a distinguished attorney and he graduated from Harvard Law School. Historians believe he may have been the first African American to graduate from an accredited law school. He was the first African American appointed as a Massachusetts Municipal Judge. His wife, Josephine Ruffin, founded the first newspaper ever published by and for Black women. She was an ardent fighter for civil rights and women’s rights. It is very likely that little Dorothy Boulding heard about these heroic relatives and was influenced by their history. For the full story of the Ruffins of Boston, see an article that I wrote about the Ruffin family that appeared in the April 2010 edition of the Church Chat.
Dorothy Boulding felt a call to be a healer at a very young age. Later in life, she told an interviewer that she did not play with dolls or toys very much as a little girl. Instead, she looked for injured animals and birds. She treated them as best she could until they were healed. She fed and warmed and nurtured them until they were ready to be set free. It appears that the events and influences of her childhood helped to prepare her to be both a healer and an activist.
The Boulding family moved from Virginia to Boston, Massachusetts when Dorothy and her
brother Ruffin Boulding were small children. Their strong family background urged and encouraged them to work hard for a good education. Dorothy attended the Armstrong Grammar School and then attended and graduated from Boston’s English High School with highest honors. In 1916, she entered Simmons College and was one of its earliest Black students. Again, in 1920, she graduated with honors. Through the years of studying and working for her education, she had never wavered or lost sight of her childhood goal of becoming a doctor and healing the sick.
She was accepted by the Medical School of Tufts University. In later years, she told an interviewer that it was really a rough time of life for her. Medical studies have always been difficult and overwhelming but she had trained herself to be a faithful and hardworking student. What really hurt her was the fact that both race and gender discrimination flourished. She was one of only five women in a class of well over one hundred men. Professors would often ridicule women students or avoid calling on them at all. In a later interview, she said: “We women were always the last to get assignments in amphitheaters and clinics and I was the last, because not only was I a woman, but a Negro, too!”
In spite of the discrimination, Dorothy Boulder applied herself and was an outstanding achiever. She was elected to the Women’s Honor Society and was also named Class Historian. Once again, she graduated at the top off her class. None of this helped her in the least when the time came to apply for an internship. She faced the same heartbreak so many aspiring young Black doctors had faced before her, rejection because of race. However, she was accepted for an internship at Freedmen’s Hospital in Washington, D.C.
Dorothy Boulding Ferebee (1898-1980): Physician and ActivistBy Dorothy G. Kapenstein◄Continued From Page Twenty
Washington was a strictly segregated city in Dorothy Boulding’s time and had been since it was founded. It would be many more years before it was desegregated. Freedmen’s Hospital was opened in 1862 to treat great numbers of Blacks who were fleeing the war zone. It was the seed from which Howard University Medical School grew. Dorothy found no racial prejudice here because everyone was Black, but there was more than enough prejudice against women to go around. She would sometimes encounter this same type of prejudice when she later became a staff member at Howard University. She finished her internship in 1925 and now she was able to concentrate on her two ambitions: to heal the sick and to work for social justice.
She opened a private medical practice in the poor, rundown, crowded Capitol Hill section of the city where segregation forced most African Americans to live. . There was almost nothing in the way of medical treatment for the poor people of the Black community. There was a nearby charity supported medical center for the poor called Friendship House but it was segregated and did not accept Black patients. Dr. Boulding used her strong powers of persuasion and convinced the Board of Directors that they wanted was to open a separate but equal facility for the poor Blacks. Freedmen’s Hospital was really the only hospital open to sick Black patients. There was no ambulance service for Blacks, so the elderly, the very sick and the dying were often taken by car by the Doctor and her assistants.
Dr. Boulding became aware that there was a multitude of Black women
in her office area who had to work to support their children. The women were poor and could barely feed and clothe their children. They could not pay for after school care so most often; young children had to take care of their little brothers and sisters. In order to give help to these poor families, Dr. Boulding founded the Southeast Neighborhood Society. This group provided day care and after school care for the children of poor working mothers.
During these years, Dr. Boulding began a lifelong career with Howard University and its Medical School. She began as a clinical instructor and worked her way up to become a top medical staff educator. In 1941, she was appointed Medical Director of Howard’s Student Health Service and she gave great service until she retired in 1968. In addition, Dr. Boulding played an important role in the National College Health Association for many years.
She became Dorothy Boulding Ferebee in 1930 when she married Dr. Claude Ferebee. He was a dentist who spent many years as a faculty member at the Howard University School of Dentistry. A year after they married, the Ferebees were blessed with fraternal twins, a daughter named Dorothy and a son named Claude, Jr. for his father. Sadly, their daughter died when she was a young girl. The marriage must have had its hard times, because the Ferebees eventually divorced.
From 1934 to 1941, Dr. Dorothy Boulding Ferebee traveled to Mississippi every summer as Director of the Mississippi Health Project, a tremendous effort to bring health care to the very poor black people of the Mississippi Delta area who suffered from a terrible need for medical care. There were a number of reasons for this. One reason was that they had so little money in their pockets to pay for treatment. They suffered from malnutrition because they had so little
money for food. This caused such poor health that they became easy prey to disease and infection. White doctors would not treat them and white hospitals would not let them in. The Mississippi Delta Program enabled them to get some relief from this terrible situation. This important program was largely funded by Alpha Kappa Alpha, a black college sorority known for its charitable works and Civil Rights advocacy. Every summer, Dr. Ferebee and her medical teams conducted clinics and taught good health measures.
Writing in the Journal of Mississippi History (Fall 2001), Dr. Thomas Ward summed up the importance of the project in these words: “The seven-year program stands as one of the most impressive examples of voluntary health work ever conducted by black physicians in the Jim Crow south, touching thousands of Black Mississippians when they had virtually no access to professional medical care.”
The Mississippi Delta project was her summer work. During the winters, she ran her medical practice, taught and worked at Howard University and raised her twins. Yet she found time to work for racial and gender equality! She served as President of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority from 1939 to 1941. She worked constantly to support their programs of activism for the Black community and seeking fair treatment for women.
She joined the National Council of Negro Women, an organization founded by Mary McLeod Bethune. The goals of this organization were a perfect match for her own. Dr. Ferebee held various posts and then succeeded Mrs. Bethune as the second President. Dr. Ferebee served in the position from 1949 to 1953 and heartily upheld the programs.
She served as President of the Girl Scouts of America 1969 to 1972 and helped to bring about her goals in that organization.
In her later years, she became an international consultant on public health and Civil Rights. President Kennedy appointed her to the Council for Food for Peace. For five months, she toured Africa and lectured about health care. She served as a consultant to the United States Department of Health, UNICEF, the Pan American Union and the Peace Corps.
She received many honors and awards for her magnificent lifetime work. One which must have pleased her was to be named the first recipient of the Simmons College Outstanding Alumnae Achievement Award. Simmons still awards a number of student scholarships in her honor.
BE POSITIVECHOOSE HOW YOU START
YOUR DAY
Michael is the kind of guy you love to hate. He is always in a good mood and always has something positive to say. When someone would ask him how he was doing, he would reply, If I were any better, I would be twins!
He was a natural motivator. If an employee was having a bad day, Michael was there telling the employee how to look on the positive side of the situation.
Seeing this style really made me curious, so one day I went up to Michael and asked him, I don’t get it!
You can’t be a positive person all of the time. How do you do it?
Michael replied, Each morning I wake up and say to myself, Mike, you have two choices today. You can choose to be in a good mood or you can choose to be in a bad mood. I choose to be in a good mood.
Each time something bad happens, I can choose to be a victim or I can choose to learn from it. I choose to learn from it.
Every time someone comes to me complaining, I can choose to accept their complaining or I can point out the positive side of life. I choose the positive side of life.
Yeah, right, it isn’t that easy, I protested. Yes, it is, Michael said. Life is all about choices. When you cut away all the junk, every situation is a choice. You choose how you react to situations. You choose how people will affect your mood. You choose to be in a good mood or bad mood.
The bottom line is: It’s your choice how you live life.
I reflected on what Michael said. Soon thereafter, I left the tower industry to start my own business. We lost touch, but I often thought about him when I made a choice about life instead of reacting to it.
Several years later, I heard that Michael was involved in a serious accident, falling some 60 feet from a communications tower. After 18 hours of surgery and weeks of intensive care, Michael was released from the hospital with rods placed in his back.
I saw Michael about six months after the accident. When I asked him how he was, he replied. If I were any better, I’d be twins. Wanna see my scars? I declined to see his wounds, but did ask him what had gone through his mind as the accident took place.
The first thing that went through my mind was the well-being of my soon to be born daughter, Michael replied. Then, as I lay on the ground, I remembered that I had two choices: I could choose to live or I could choose to die. I chose to live.
Weren’t you scared? Did you lose consciousness I asked? Michael continued, ..the paramedics were great. They kept telling me I was going to be fine. But when they wheeled me into the ER and I saw the expressions on the face of the doctors and nurses, I got really scared. In their eyes, I read ‘he’s a dead man. I knew I needed to take action. What did you do I asked?
Well, there was a big burly nurse shouting questions at me, said Michael. She asked if I was allergic to anything. ‘Yes, I replied. The doctors and nurses stopped working as they waited for my reply. I took a deep breath and yelled, Gravity. Over their laughter, I told them, ‘I am choosing to live. Operate on me as if I am alive, not dead.’
Michael lived, thanks to the skill of his doctors, but also because of his amazing attitude. I learned from him that every day we have the choice to live fully. Attitude, after all, is everything.
“Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” Matthew 6:34 After all today is the tomorrow you worried about yesterday.
ROOM IN THE LIFEBOATS
Catering to the rich and famous, this luxury liner was advertised as unsinkable. On Titanic’s fateful night, passengers who somehow still believed the advertisement refused to get in the lifeboats, even though they were told the ship was going down. They held to their belief in the advertisement that the ship was unsinkable-and were actually offended by officers who told them to climb into a cramped lifeboat when they had paid enormous sums for luxurious accommodations.
Other passengers were unable to enter a lifeboat because of the selfish privileged who felt no concern for anyone but themselves. The first-class passengers feared that added weight in the lifeboats would jeopardize their chance for survival. As a result, many of the ship’s lifeboats, which were made to hold up to 60 people, left the ship with only 15 people aboard.
Although there were enough lifeboats to save hundreds more, people either refused to use them or they were left stranded on the sinking liner.
The death and resurrection of Jesus Christ provided the lifeboat we all must climb aboard. To miss that lifeboat is to perish. Many people either continue to believe that the world can offer them happiness or salvation through their own efforts, or they are left stranded because Christians have been too selfish to reach out to them. There is more than enough room at the Cross for those who are perishing.
THANKSGIVING IS...
Thanksgiving is anticipation...the excitement of wonderful aromas,
golden, harvest-themed décor,the best linens, china and silver.
Thanksgiving is...platters of special Thanksgiving foods
prepared only once a year,mmn...mmn... mouths watering,
ecstatic taste buds quivering with joy.
Thanksgiving is...the family all around the table,
clean, dressed, smiles all around,recitation of what we are thankful for,
the saying of grace,our special Thanksgiving prayer.
And now, finally, dig in!We are thinking of you
at Thanksgiving, and hopingyour Thanksgiving experience
will be surroundedby a special glow in your memory.
POSITIVE THOUGHTS
The next moment is as much beyond our grasp, and as much in God’s care, as that a hundred years away. Care for the next minute is just as foolish as care for a day in the next thousand years. In neither can we do anything, in both God is doing everything.
C.S. Lewis
Truth hurts not the searching after; the running from! John Eyberg
We all have enough strength to bear other people’s woes. La Rochefoucald
A lot of people mistake a short memory for a clear conscience. Doug Larson
IN THE SMALL STUFF
• It’s easier to change your behavior in advance than to change your reputation afterward.
• What the world sees you are, they consider Christ to be.
• As a Christian, you are designed and equipped to change the world for the glory of Jesus.
• God is looking for coordinated Christians whose walk matches their talk.
• Discipline begins with small things done daily.
• The secret behind most success stories? Discipline.
