Every November we take one day to give thanks for the special things in our lives. We have so many things for which we are thankful. Some people find it hard to find things for which to be grateful. Others have a hard time because there are so many great things in their lives. Think about it. Think about your day for instance – from the time you woke up until the time you went to bed. What did you do? Who did you see? Where did you go? Did you accomplish all that you wanted to today? If you were able to answer these questions, then you are thankful. And we have so much to be thankful for – blessings, grace, and mercy that God provides for us on a daily basis. We need to praise God daily and in every situation. So take some time today to thank God for putting blessings into your life, and pray for those who can’t find things to be thankful for. HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!!

“Message from the Editor”This month’s scripture is from Psalm 100, “Make a joyful noise unto the LORD, all ye lands. Serve the LORD with gladness: come before his presence with singing. Know ye that the LORD he is God: it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture. Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name. For the LORD is good; his mercy is everlasting; and his truth endureth to all generations.” BE THANKFUL. BE GRATEFUL. This month we celebrate Thanksgiving. Why not do this each and everyday? BE THANKFUL. BE GRATEFUL.

We hope everyone enjoyed the October 2011 issue of the Church Chat, where we celebrated 200 issues. However, all praise, all honor, and all glory, belong to God, without Him, the Church Chat would not be possible. Thank you for the many, many compliments and words of encouragement.

Special thanks go to all the contributors of the Church Chat this month. Please try to submit your articles BEFORE the deadline, ESPECIALLY if it is a FULL PAGE. Also, you can leave it in the Church Office, fax it to 484-463-8229, or E-mail it to [email protected].

HOLIDAY PARTIES WITHOUT THE POUNDSby Sandra Gordon

During the holidays, food isn’t just food, it’s a delicious experience loaded with tradition and temptation. And if you’re not careful, in the five weeks between Thanksgiving and New Year’s, the indulgent delights of stuffing, pumpkin pie and eggnog can become the harsh reality of extra pounds.

For our weight to survive the season, we need to party healthy, not hearty. The key is putting together a party strategy that keeps portions — and appetites — under control. Here’s how.

Don’t Arrive Famished. “For several days before a party, cut back on both fat and calories,” advises dietitian Riska Platt, a spokesperson for the American Heart Association. That way, you’ll be able to eat a little more without worrying about it. Never arrive at a party starving or you’ll overeat. Instead, have a piece of fruit,

a small salad or a cup of low-fat yogurt before leaving home.

Use Delay Tactics. Once you arrive at a party, have a diet soda or a glass of seltzer mixed with fruit juice. Hold off on the hors d’oeuvres and champagne.

“The longer you put off eating and drinking alcohol, the less time you’ll have to overindulge,” says Cathy Nonas, RD, author of Outwit Your Weight (Rodale Press). Research shows that consuming alcohol and high-fat appetizers may cause you to eat more during the main course.

To avoid feeling deprived and dodge the social pressure from others, put the seltzer in a wine glass or the diet soda in a high-ball glass. “No one will know you’re having a completely low-damage drink,” says Linda Spangle, author of 100 Days of Weight Loss (Nelson, Thomas, Inc., $14.99).

If others offer you food or pressure you to indulge, a good retort is to say: “Not just yet. I’m just going to wait a little while,” says Spangle. “It’s a magical line, one that most people won’t challenge.”

Fill Your Plate. You read it right. Once you give yourself the go-ahead to dig in, use a plate rather than grabbing one handful of goodies, then another and another. Fill three-quarters of your plate with chopped fresh vegetables and fruit, if available, reserving the remaining quarter for anything you want,

Don’t feel obligated to eat whatever you take. Ditto with dessert. And whatever you do, sit down to savor each and every bite. Spangle recommends mingling without food. Once you’ve said your hellos, then sit down and slowly dig in to your allotted portion. Think twice before you go back for more.

Every Second Counts. Speaking of seconds, keep in mind that another helping of mashed potatoes (110 calories), a slice of turkey breast (120) and a narrow sliver of pecan pie (215) doesn’t seem like much. But do the math. That “just a little more” can easily add up to more than 440 calories and about 14 grams of fat. So make your first plateful of holiday dinner your last.

A temptation tamer: Take a 20-minute intermission before reaching for seconds to give the urge for more an opportunity to pass. Afterward, if you’re still hungry, opt for another serving of steamed vegetables or a salad.

A MEETING OF MOMENTS[They] put him to death by nailing him to a cross. But this was God’s plan which he had made long ago.

Acts 2:23

The cross was no accident.

Jesus’ death was not the result of a panicking cosmological engineer. The cross wasn’t a tragic surprise. Calvary was not a knee-jerk response to a world plummeting toward destruction. It wasn’t a patch-up job or a stop-gap measure. The death of the Son of God was anything but an unexpected peril.

No it was part of an incredible plan. A calculated choice.

The moment the forbidden fruit touched the lips of Eve, the shadow of a cross appeared on the horizon. And between that moment and the moment the man with the mallet placed the spike against the wrist of God, a master plan was fulfilled.

GOD’S WORDFOR THE FAMILY

The Word of God establishes the family as the most important Christian social unit in our society and gives us guidance for proper relationships so that we might be everything God chooses for us, both individually and corporately. These scriptures will help you learn more about the promises for your family, God’s guidance for a better family relationship, and how God truly wants to bless and direct every Christian family for His glory.

GOD BLESSES YOUR FAMILY “WITH YOUR SPOUSE”

Drink waters out of thine own cistern, and running waters out of thine own well. Let thy fountains be dispersed abroad, and rivers of waters in the streets. Let them be only thine own, and not strangers’ with thee. Let thy fountain be blessed: and rejoice with the wife of thy youth.

Proverbs 5:15-18

Live joyfully with the wife whom thou lovest all the days of the life of thy vanity, which he hath given thee under the sun, all the days of thy vanity: for that is thy portion in this life, and in thy labour which thou takest under the sun.

Ecclesiastes 9:9

Thy wife shall be as a fruitful vine by the sides of thine house: thy children like olive plants round about thy table. Behold, that thus shall the man be blessed that feareth the LORD.

Psalm 128:3-4

Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as it is fit in the Lord. Husbands, love your wives, and be not bitter against them.

Colossians 3:18-19

THE LITTLE BOOK OF PRAYER

INTERCESSIONBut Thou, taking Thy own secret counsel and noting the real point to [my mother’s] desire, didst not grant what she was then asking in order to grant to her the thing she had always been asking.

FIVE INVESTMENT TIPSPart Two of a Three Part Series

CHOOSE THE ASSET ALLOCATION THAT FITS YOU One of the most important decisions you will make for your retirement plan is how to divide your investments among stock funds, bond funds and short-term investments such as money market or stable value funds. Your choice should be guided by your risk tolerance and the amount of time you have before you plan to retire.

“Using the target-date funds that a lot of 401(k)s have in them now is a good kind of cheat sheet,” Lane says. “You look at the target-date funds for your retirement age, pull up a chart on that fund and look at the volatility. Then you decide whether or not you’re willing to take that rough of a ride. If you’re not, then back down to a more conservative target-date fund.”

Even if you’re not investing in a target-date fund, you can follow its asset allocation formula as you design your own portfolio. Beth McHugh, vice president of market insights for Fidelity Investments in Boston, says that as long as you’re within 10 percent to 15 percent of the mark for your age group in each investment category, you’re generally in good shape.

BONE UP ON INVESTMENT STYLES Need a little help figuring out what a particular fund may invest in? Lane recommends using Morningstar.com’s Style Box to analyze funds.

The Style Box is a nine-block grid designed to classify and aid in the evaluation of stock and bond funds. With a stock fund, for example, the vertical axis of the grid indicates the overall market capitalization of the fund, spanning from large companies at the top of the grid to small companies at the bottom. The horizontal axis of the grid shows the range of investment styles, from value at left to growth at right, and “blend” in the middle.

10 WORST FOODS FOR YOUR STOMACHBy Amy Capetta

If you think you’re the only one who suffers from belching, stomach bloating and abdominal discomfort on a regular basis, think again: The most current statistics from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention state that the average number of annual visits to physician offices and hospitals regarding digestive system conditions total 42.2 million. And according to the American College of Gastroenterology, more than 95 million Americans suffer from poor digestion.

The common culprits for digestive issues are cooked food, since heat destroys the natural enzymes found in raw foods that aid in digestion, and aging, due to a decline in enzyme production of about 13 percent with each passing decade, said Dr. Steven Lamm, a board-certified internist and faculty member at the NYU Medical Center.

While those who suffer from irritable bowel syndrome, heartburn, acid reflux (also known as gastroesophageal reflux disease) or an ulcer will have various reactions to different foods and drinks, experts agree the following 10 items are likely to irritate one of more of these tummy-related conditions.

1. Stomach-sensitive food: mintWhy it can affect you: While peppermint has numerous benefits, including aiding in digestive issues, it can also have the reverse effect and increase heartburn symptoms, Dr. Gerald Ashton Isenberg, who works in the gastroenterology department at UH Case Medical Center in Cleveland, Ohio, told AOL Health.

“Mint increases the chance of acid reflux because it relaxes the lower esophageal sphincter, a muscle that is located at the end of the esophagus, allowing acid from the stomach to back up into the food pipe,” he explained. Keep in mind this holds true for anything that contains mint, such as peppermint tea and even peppermint gum and breath mints.

2. Stomach-sensitive food: sodas and fruit juices

Why they can affect you: According to Dr. Jacob Teitelbaum medical director of the Fibromyalgia and Fatigue Centers, both of these beverages contain a whopping 3/4 teaspoon of sugar per ounce. “Many people have heard of lactose intolerance, but fructose intolerance is another major cause of IBS,” he told AOL Health. He further explained that as many as 30 percent of adults have fructose mal-absorption, meaning their bodies can absorb less than 25 grams of fructose (six spoons) at a time. “Whatever the body cannot absorb acts like a sponge by sucking water into your gut while triggering unhealthy infections in the colon.”

3. Stomach-sensitive food: beansWhy they can affect you: Beans can produce intestinal gas because they contain oligosaccharide, a type of complex sugar comprised of large molecules too big for the small intestine. In addition, the body cannot break down this complex sugar because it lacks the enzyme to do so.

4. Stomach-sensitive food: coffeeWhy it can affect you: Teitelbaum said that the acids in coffee can irritate the stomach lining, which can cause excessive production of hydrochloric acid, leading to indigestion and reflux, especially for those with ulcers or who are prone to heartburn. Sorry, java lovers, decaf contains the same acids and will result in the same reaction.

To satisfying your coffee craving, Teitelbaum suggested drinking one cup of licorice tea a day, which has been known to soothe the stomach and treat ulcers.

5. Stomach-sensitive food: broccoli

Why it can affect you: Registered dietitian Katherine Brooking told AOL Health that broccoli is a gas-producing veggie that may cause stomach issues for those who deal with IBS. Broccoli is placed in the category of soluble fiber, a type of fiber that doesn’t break down until it reaches the large intestine, where digestion causes gas. Plus, broccoli contains a small amount of raffinose, a complex sugar that produces gas, which is also found in beans.

6. Stomach-sensitive food: tomatoes

Why they can affect you: “Tomatoes can be an esophageal irritant, bringing about symptoms of acid reflux, heartburn or making heartburn worse,” said Isenberg. This juicy red fruit is highly acidic, which, in turn, stimulates the production of extra digestive acids in the stomach. As a result, these acids can creep back up the esophagus, aggravating a sensitive esophagus or further damaging the lining of the esophagus. Tomato-based foods, such as marinara sauce, pizza sauce and salsa, fall under this umbrella, as well.

7. Stomach-sensitive food: milk-based products

Why they can affect you: According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, an estimated 30 to 50 million American adults are lactose intolerant. “We are the only species that continues to drink milk after weaning, and many people lose the ability to digest lactose -- the milk sugar -- as they grow into adulthood,” said Teitelbaum.

WINTER HEALTH TIPS FOR SENIOR CITIZENSBy: Rory Coen, OnlymyhealthPart One of a Two Part Series

Senior citizenry and winter illnesses are synonymous unfortunately. The cold, damp weather doesn’t suit their weakened immune systems and they become susceptible to infections, viruses, bugs and hypothermia. There are measures they can take to counter the effects of the season, but if you know any senior citizen, whose health might be compromised, take it upon yourself to help out.

Wrap up warmIf you are going outside, expect the unexpected with respect to the weather. Temperatures can plummet in the late afternoon when darkness sets in and you may feel a dangerous chill and with it the risks associated with hypothermia. Wear a hat, scarf and gloves to cover the exposed areas of your body, and bring an umbrella with you. This can also help you in difficult under foot conditions and help you to avoid a possible fall. Have a couple of warm cardigans to wear around the house.

Winter AppliancesHeaters, furnaces, radiators, fire-places, cookers, stoves, electric blankets and kettles; all of these appliances play a role in keeping our senior citizens warm and comfortable. These should be checked against malfunction and replaced if they are not performing to specification. Ensure that there is a working thermostat in place, somewhere in the home, and the resident is able to operate it as per his/her wishes; 75˚ is a comfortable temperature for a home, but this is a variable of course.

Ensure the resident is able to troubleshoot all the winter appliances if something should go wrong.

THANKSGIVING: A TIME TO REMEMBERBy Barbara Rainey

I’ve heard people say that Thanksgiving is their favorite holiday. Is that surprising? Though it’s a holiday sandwiched between the increasingly popular Halloween and the overwhelmingly merchandised Christmas, Thanksgiving remains the holiday of “coming home.” It’s a holiday of rest—in stark contrast to the frenzy of obligation and spending that threatens to destroy the essence of Christmas.

Our national observance of Thanksgiving is unique. It is both distinctly Christian and exclusively American, a holiday for celebrating faith, family, and freedom.

Having majored in history in college, I’ve been concerned for years that “we the people” don’t know and understand what Abraham Lincoln referred to when he began his famous Gettysburg address with the statement, “Fourscore and seven years ago, our fathers brought forth upon this continent a new nation, conceived in liberty … “ I was determined that my children would hear the stories of the courageous men, women, and children who lived honorably and, through faith in God, made enormous sacrifices to secure freedom for us all.

I wanted them to understand God’s sovereignty at work in the lives of our forefathers and His providential direction of their circumstances. For the Rainey family, Thanksgiving was not going to be just eating, hours of TV, naps, and leftover turkey sandwiches—followed by a stress-filled Friday of frantic Christmas shopping at the mall.

With my husband’s help I initiated some new traditions into our Thanksgiving Day.

The two more important ones are the reading of stories about the Pilgrims’ journey of faith from England to the shores of Cape Cod and the recording and sharing of our family’s personal blessings. As believers in Christ, we have so much to be thankful for and as Americans God has abundantly blessed our nation.

During the years when all our children were still at home, our family would travel to my parents’ home for the traditional Thanksgiving meal. Before we left our home, however, we enjoyed another tradition—a special brunch. Everyone wore his or her Sunday “dress up” clothes for the meal. The children made place cards, decorated the table, and set it with special plates and glasses. The brunch always included a special French toast that requires 45 minutes to bake.

While this meal was baking in the oven, we gathered around the table and began reading about the Pilgrims. I’ve always been impressed by the faith the Pilgrims demonstrated when they held the first thanksgiving festival. Though they had suffered much while starting a new life in the new world, they also recognized that God had clearly and miraculously guided their steps. Though they had suffered much, their experience was remarkably better than others who had attempted to colonize on the American shores. Plymouth had lost 50 percent of its numbers, but Jamestown in Virginia had lost 90 percent. The Plymouth settlers had successfully built a little community and grown crops to provide for themselves, while other colonies were totally dependent on supplies from England. Yes, God blessed them abundantly, and they sincerely offered Him their thanks and praise.

GOD CAN HANDLE IT ….MARRIAGEBy Dr. S. M. Henriques

EXTENDING FORGIVENESSConflict between a husband and wife makes forgiveness necessary. Neither one is always right; neither one is always wrong. Victor Hugo wrote, “The supreme happiness of life is the conviction of being loved for yourself, or more correctly, being loved in spite of yourself.”

God is never more involved in a marriage than He is when forgiveness is offered freely and regularly by both wife and husband. Forgiveness is what He uses to bring us closer to Him; it’s also what He uses to bring us closer to each other. Indeed, there can be no lasting human relationship, in marriage or otherwise, where forgiveness is absent.

One unknown sage said, “Happiness lies in the backyard, but it’s probably well hidden by crabgrass.” God calls upon us to extend the hand of forgiveness. And when we do, we never allow the crabgrass of an unforgiving spirit to obscure the happiness that exists in our own backyard.

He who forgives ends the quarrel. African Proverb

1t requires only an ounce of grace and a thimble full of brains to hold a grudge; but to entirely forget an injury is truly beautiful.

Unknown

“I can forgive, but I cannot forget” is only another way of saying, I will not forgive. Forgiveness ought to be like a cancelled note: torn in two and burned up, so that it never can be shown against one.

Henry Ward Beecher

A man’s wisdom gives him patience; it is to his glory to overlook an offense.

ARKTIFACTS AND MORE(Part Two of a Three Part Series)

When the Arameans were camped outside Samaria, God made the sound of chariots and horses and a big army to scare them away. It worked. 2 Kings 7:6-7David’s warriors could shoot arrows right and left handed. 1 Chronicles 12:2Obed’s grandma Naomi was his nurse when he was a baby. Ruth 4:6When King Xerxes couldn’t sleep, he had people read the record of his reign to him. Esther 6:1Jews tried to stone Jesus at the temple. They failed, of course. John 8:59After Saul killed himself, the Philistines cut off his head and hung it in a temple. 1 Chronicles 10:10When the Ark was on its way back to Israel, God killed 70 men who got curious and looked inside it. 1 Samuel 6:19Manna tasted like honey wafers. LESSON IN LYING

A minister told his congregation, “Next week I plan to preach about the sin of lying. To help you understand my sermon, I want you all to read Mark 17.”

The following Sunday, as he prepared to deliver his sermon, the minister asked for a show of hands. He wanted to know how many had read Mark 17. Every hand went up. The minister smiled and said, “Mark has only sixteen chapters. I will now proceed with my sermon on the sin of lying.”

UNWANTED VISITOR

A man, down on his luck, went into a church which catered to the “uppity”. Spotting the man’s dirty clothes a deacon, worried about the churches image, went to the man and asked him if he needed help. The man said, “I was praying and the Lord told me to come to this church.”

The deacon suggested that the man go pray some more and possibly he might get a different answer. The next Sunday the man returned. The deacon asked, “Did you get a different answer?”

The man replied, “Yes I did. I told the Lord that they don’t want me in that church and the Lord said, ‘Don’t worry about it son; I’ve been trying to get into that church for years and haven’t made it yet.”

DAILY PRAISE FROMTHE BIBLE

Inspiration from the PsalmsBy Dan Dick

He that putteth not out his money to usury, nor taketh reward against the innocent. He that doeth these things shall never be moved.

Psalm 15:5

The young man was quite proud of himself. He ran a lawn-care service specifically targeted to older people who could not do the work for themselves. But, because he had them in a tough position, he charged them more than he ordinarily could have. Since they couldn’t do the work themselves, and they often didn’t know anyone else to contact, they had to pay his price. Publically, he gained the reputation of being a champion of the elderly. Privately, he gloated over his shrewd maneuvering.

The Bible tells us that when we receive our rewards on earth, we have nothing to look forward to from God in the future. Our duty is to love and defend others, not take advantage of them. When we put other people’s interests ahead of our own, then we can count on God’s favor in the days to come.

PRAYER: You have created everyone equally, Lord, and no one is more precious in Your sight than anyone else. Help me to see the value in all people, and do everything in my power to serve them and love them. Amen.

WHAT JESUS IS SAYING TO YOU

By Peter Wallace

Peter, get up! Kill these and eat them.Acts 10:13

Peter the apostle had gone to the roof to pray. And he fell asleep and saw a vision of heaven opening, a sheet bound at the four corners descending to him, let down to the earth: “In it were all kinds of animals, snakes, and birds” (Acts 10:12). All of them were forbidden by strict Jewish dietary law.

Then the voice of Jesus broke in to Peter’s reverie. Did Peter obey? Not at all. He was still Peter: “Lord, I can’t

do that!” He was still obedient to the rigid rules of his former faith.

But Jesus was bringing a new way of freedom in the Spirit, of obedience to Him, not to a lot of proscribed, human-devised regulations.

What has you distracted and tied up? What do you think Jesus would say about that to you today? Ask Him.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT!! Not everyone is healthy enough to have a front row seat in our lives. There are some people in your life that need to be loved from a Distance. It’s amazing what you can accomplish when you let go of, or at least minimize, your time with draining, negative, incompatible, not going anywhere relationships/friendships. Observe the relationships around you.

Pay attention! Which ones lift and which ones lean? Which ones encourage and which ones discourage? Which ones are on a path of growth uphill and which ones are going downhill? When you leave certain people do you feel better or worse? Which ones always have drama or don’t really understand, know, or appreciate you? The more you seek quality, respect, growth, peace of mind, love, and truth around you, the easier it will become for you to decide who gets to sit in the front row and who should be moved to the balcony of your life.

DOWN THE YEARS

While we can’t see down the years, Our Lord can see it all! He knows our joys and sees our tears, And guards His sheep from falls.

He knows the path that we should take And orders there our feet. If paths be hard, it’s for our sake, So mistakes we don’t repeat.

Take disappointment from His hand Don’t fight against His will. Rest assured it’s His good plan. You’re His child, He loves you still!

One day you will know ‘twas for the best; He guarded you from fire And led your feet to paths of rest To find your heart’s desire.

Some things are not as they appear And later we recall. .. While we could not see down the years, Our God could see it all!

IN EVERYTHING GIVE THANKS

On November 24, Americans will once again celebrate a national day of thanksgiving. It is a day set aside to give thanks unto God for our great heritage and the many blessings He bestows upon us. For many, Thanksgiving is simply a day off from work. It is a time to overeat, enjoy parades and ball games, and visit friends and relatives. However, for the child of God, every day is truly Thanksgiving Day. Paul admonished, In everything give thanks (1 Thessalonians 5:18). For what does the child of God give thanks?

•Give thanks for God’s goodness and mercy (1 Chron.16:34). •Give thanks for God’s holiness (Psalm 30:4). •Give thanks for God’s creation (Psalm 75:1). •Give thanks for God’s deeds (Psalm 105:1). •Give thanks for God’s righteous judgment (Psalm 119:62). •Give thanks for our food (Matthew 15:36).

•Give thanks for the body and blood of Jesus (Matthew 26:26-28). •Give thanks for the victory found in Jesus Christ (1 Corinthians 15:57). •Give thanks for the care and compassion of others (2 Corinthians 8:16). •Give thanks for God’s unspeakable gift - Jesus Christ (2 Corinthians 9:15). •Give thanks for our brethren (Ephesians 1:16). •Give thanks for all things (Ephesians 5:20). •Give thanks for the church (Colossians 1:12-13). •Give thanks for all men (1 Timothy 2:1). •Give thanks for civil authorities (1 Timothy 2:2). •Give thanks for the hope of heaven (Revelation 11:16-17). Surely we can think of countless other blessings for which we should give thanks. These are just a few of those mentioned in the Holy Scriptures. As His children, let us begin today thanking God for His many favors. - Barry M. Grider

RULES FOR THANKSGIVING DINNER AT MY HOUSE

1. Don’t get in line asking questions about the food. “Who made the potato salad? Is it egg in there? Are the greens fresh? Is the meat in the greens turkey or pork? Who made the macaroni and cheese? What kind of pie is that? Who made it?” Ask one more question and I will punch you in your mouth, knocking out all your fronts so you won’t be able to eat anything.

2. If you can’t walk or are missing any limbs, sit your butt down until someone makes your plate for you. Dinner time is not the time for you to be independent. Nibble on them pecans and walnuts to hold you over until someone makes you a plate.

3. If you have kids under the age of twelve, I will escort their little

butts to the basement and bring their food down to them. They are not gonna tear my house up this year. Tell them that they are not allowed upstairs until it’s time for Uncle Butchie to start telling family stories about their mommas and papas. If they come upstairs for any reason except for that they are bleeding to death, I will tear their butts up and you better not ask why!

4. There is going to be one prayer for Thanksgiving dinner! JUST ONE! We do not care that you are thankful that your 13 year old daughter gave birth to a healthy baby or your nephew just got out of jail. The time limit for the prayer is one minute. If you are still talking after that one minute is up, you will feel something hard come across your lips and they will be swollen for approximately 20 minutes.

5. Finish everything on your plate before you go up for seconds! If you don’t, you will be asked to keep your greedy butt home next year!

6. BRING YOUR OWN TUPPERWARE!! Don’t let me catch you fixing your self a plate in my good Tupperware knowing that I will never see it again! Furthermore, if you didn’t bring anything over, don’t let me catch you making a plate period or it will be a misunderstanding. And why are you making plates before you eat? You never bring a dish or offer a dime do you?

7. What you came with is what you should leave with!! Do not leave my house with anything that

doesn’t belong to you. EVERYBODY WILL BE SUBJECTED TO A BODY SEARCH COMING AND GOING OUT OF MY DOMAIN!!!

8. Do not leave your kids so you can go hopping from house to house. This is not a DAYCARE CENTER! There will be a kid-parent roll call every ten minutes. Any parent that is not present at the time of roll call, your child will be put outside until you come and get him or her. After 24 hours, I will call Child Protective Services!

9. BOOK YOUR HOTEL ROOM BEFORE YOU COME INTO TOWN!! There will be no sleeping over at my house! You are to come and eat dinner and go home or to your hotel room. EVERYBODY GETS KICKED OUT AT 11:00 pm. You will get a 15 minute warning bell ring.

10. Last but not least! ONE PLATE PER PERSON!! This is not a soup kitchen. I am not trying to feed your family until Christmas dinner! You will be supervised when you fix your plate. Anything over the appropriate amount will be charged to you before you leave. There will be a cash register at the door.

Thanks to Cousin Alfred and his greedy family, we now have a credit card machine! So ALL MAJOR CREDIT CARDS are now being accepted. NO FOOD STAMPS OR ACCESS CARDS YET.

MEN OF THE BIBLEBy Dan Hannon

HEROD ANTIPAS

Matthew 14:1-12; Mark 6: 14-29; Luke 23:7-12

Unscrupulous yet cautious, Herod Antipas ruled Galilee during the lifetime of Jesus Christ. His father, Herod the Great, had been completely heartless when he ordered the cold-blooded killing of every baby boy around Bethlehem in an attempt to eliminate the newborn king of the Jews. Like his father, the younger Herod had no love for Jesus or for John the Baptist. Their ministries were causing an unprecedented sensation throughout the land but Herod Antipas was not as ruthless as his father. In fact he tried to avoid the conflict which these men would cause him.

Yet Herod Antipas had a particular disdain for John. Herod had taken his brother Philip’s wife as his own and John had boldly pointed out his wrongdoing. The king wanted to arrest and execute John for this, but he was afraid the people would revolt because of their high regard for John.

Then the wife in question, Herodias, forced Herod’s hand. She persuaded Herod to have John arrested. Then, using her daughter’s sensuous dancing to corrupt his thinking, Herodias obtained an order to have John beheaded. This unnerved the ruler. Not only did he fear the people’s reaction, he privately appreciated John’s preaching. But he had promised to do whatever his pretty niece wanted, and, at her mother’s request, she asked that John be beheaded and his head presented to her on a platter. So it was done.

When Jesus Christ was arrested and dragged before Pilate in Jerusalem, Herod happened to be in the city.

Pilate tried to take advantage of this in an effort to shift the role of judge to Herod Antipas. So Pilate sent Jesus and His accusers to Herod. After all, Jesus was a Galilean, so His case came under Herod’s authority. Herod was eager to meet Jesus because he wanted to see Him perform a miracle. But Jesus refused to answer Herod’s questions. So Herod and his soldiers mocked the prisoner and sent Him back to Pilate.

Scripture says Herod and Pilate, who had been enemies, became friends in the aftermath of Jesus’ crucifixion. These two cowardly leaders found a common bond at the turning point of civilization. They may have feared this man from Galilee, but they could not acknowledge the existence of a power above their own or that of Rome.

INSPIRATIONAL BEAUTY TIPS For attractive lips, speak words of kindness. For beautiful eyes, look for the good in other people. To lose weight, let go of stress, hatred, anger, discontentment and the need to control others. To improve your ears, listen to the word of God.Rather than focus on the thorns of life, smell the roses and count your blessings, giving thanks for each one of them. For poise, walk with knowledge and self-esteem.To strengthen your arms, hug at least 3 people a day.Touch someone with your love.To strengthen your heart, forgive yourself and others.Don’t worry and hurry so much.Rather than walk this earth lightly, walk firmly with determination and leave your mark.

For the ultimate in business, casual or evening attire put on the robe of Christ; it fits like a glove but allows room for growth. Best of all, it never goes out of style and is appropriate for any occasion. Doing these things on a daily basis will certainly make you a more beautiful person.

HOLIDAY PARTIES WITHOUT THE POUNDSby Sandra GordonContinued From Page Five

Change Your Tune. Research shows that eating while listening to fast, loud music may cause you to consume more food. It takes your brain about 10 minutes to register that you’re full. The faster the musical beat, the more quickly you’ll eat, so you may have already gone back for seconds before your brain tells you that your stomach’s had enough. So when dining at home over the holidays, put on slow, soothing tunes.

Exercise Every Day. Throughout the holidays, exercise daily even if you swear you’re too busy. Exercise quells your stress level, boosts metabolism and provides a feeling of well being that can fuel your resolve to eat healthy during the holidays. “When you exercise consistently, you’re less likely to say, ‘Oh, forget about it. I’m just going to pig-out tonight,’” Spangle says.

10 WORST FOODS FOR YOUR STOMACHBy Amy CapettaContinued From Page Seven

Lactose intolerance is caused by a deficiency of the enzyme lactase, which is produced by the cells lining the small intestine, stated the National Digestive Diseases Information Clearinghouse, a service of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases. “So any lactose you don’t digest becomes party food for the gut bacteria, and they say ‘thank you’ by making a lot of gas,” said Teitelbaum. Substituting “real” milk, ice cream and cheese for dairy products labeled lactose free should ease this problem, along with choosing milk that contains lactase and hard cheese, since it naturally contains less lactose than soft cheese.

8. Stomach-sensitive food: fatty foods

Why they can affect you: Foods high in fat, including fried foods, can increase symptoms of acid reflex and IBS, said Brooking. The reason: Fatty foods take longer to break down in the body, so they remain in the stomach for an extended period of time. As a result, the body automatically produces extra stomach acid in order to aid in digestion. Keep in mind that overeating (in general) will also cause a delay in digestion and will stimulate the stomach to secrete more acid.

9. Stomach-sensitive food: iced drinks (with meals)

Why they can affect you: Teitelbaum explained that indigestion isn’t typically caused by too much stomach acid but more often by the lack of it. “Digestion relies largely on stomach acid and digestive enzymes,” he said. “Your digestive enzymes work best at 98.6 degrees -- and ice-cold drinks can inactivate them, causing indigestion.”

He advised drinking something hot (like tea or hot water with lemon) when you’re dining and snacking and saving the cold drinks for in between mealtimes.

10. Stomach-sensitive food: chocolate

Why it can affect you: Last (and certainly least) is the beloved, dark, any-time-of-day treat. While chocolate has been proven to have health benefits, including improved cardiovascular health and reduced risk of stroke, it can also cause indigestion and heartburn. “Chocolate contains concentrations of theobromine, a compound that occurs naturally in many plants such as cocoa, tea and coffee plants,” stated Lamm. “And this compound has the ability to relax the esophageal sphincter muscle, letting stomach acid squirt up into the esophagus.” Chocolate also contains caffeine, another agent that encourages the stomach to produce excess acid.

Show and TellA kindergarten teacher gave her class a “show and tell” assignment. Each student was instructed to bring in an object to share with the class that represented their religion. The first student got up in front of the class and said, “My name is Benjamin and I am Jewish and this is a Star of David..”

The second student got up in front of the class and said, “My name is Mary. I’m a Catholic and this is a Rosary.”

The third student got in up front of the class and said, “My name is Tommy. I am Lutheran, and this is a casserole.”

STOP AND THANK THE LORD RIGHT NOW

THANK YOU DEAR GOD: I want to thank You for what you have already done. I am not going to wait until I see results or receive rewards; I am thanking you right now. I am not going to wait until I feel better or things look better; I am thanking you right now. I am not going to wait until people say they are sorry or until they stop talking about me; I am thanking you right now. I am not going to wait until the pain in my body disappears; I am thanking you right now. I am not going to wait until my financial situation improves; I am going to thank you right now. I am not going to wait until I understand every experience in my life that has caused me pain or grief;

I am thanking you right now. I am not going to wait until the journey gets easier or the challenges are removed; I am not going to wait until the children are asleep and the house is quiet; I am going to thank you right now. I am not going to wait until I get promoted at work or until I get the job; I am thanking you right now. I am thanking you because I am alive. I am thanking you because I made it through the day’s difficulties. I am thanking you because I have walked around the obstacles. I am thanking you because I have the ability and the opportunity to do more and do better.

I’m thanking you because FATHER, YOU haven’t given up on me.

God is just so good, and he’s good all the time.

101 RESOLUTIONS FOR THE NEW YEARBy Nancy Walker Hale

42I will take the initiative in standing up for righteousness. Pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, perseverance and gentleness. Fight the good fight of faith; take hold of the eternal life to which you were called, and you made the good confession in the presence of many witnesses.

1 TIMOTHY 6:11-12 NASB

43I will look for the good in others. The honor of good people will lead them, but those who hurt others will be destroyed by their own false ways.

PROVERBS 11:3 NLV

44I will take a risk. Just then a woman who had hemorrhaged for twelve years slipped in from behind and lightly touched his robe. She was thinking to herself, If I can “just put a finger on his robe, I’ll get well.” Jesus turned-caught her at it. Then he reassured her: “Courage, daughter. You took a risk of faith, and now you’re well.” The woman was well from then on.

MATTHEW 9:20-22 MSG

45I will praise a child for an accomplishment. In that hour Jesus rejoiced in the Spirit and said, “I thank You, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that You have hidden these things from the wise and prudent and revealed them to babes. Even so, Father, for so it seemed good in Your sight.”

LUKE 10:21 NKJV

46I will smile. They longed for me to speak as people long for rain. They drank my words like a refreshing spring rain. When they were discouraged, I smiled at them. My look of approval was precious to them. Like a chief, I told them what to do. I lived like a king among his troops and comforted those who mourned.

JOB 29:23-25 NLT

47I will not allow temporary frustrations and disappointments to derail me from achieving my master goal. After beginning with the Spirit, are you now trying to attain your goal by human effort? Have you suffered so much for nothing-if it really was for nothing?

GALATIANS 3:2-4 NIV

48I will simplify my life by decreasing my debt. Don’t run up debts, except for the huge debt of love you owe each other.

SUFFERING

Perhaps you feel that God is punishing you for some wrong you have done.

You may feel you deserve all the trials you are going through. Is that how it is?

It is true that God does not always intervene to keep sickness away from His children.

But your sickness and your suffering can never pay for your sins. Only Jesus Christ can do that.

It is by His sufferings, not yours, that you are made right with God.

And remember, God can graciously use even suffering for your ultimate good, if you humbly and sincerely commit it unto Him.

THE BIBLE SAYS…

He tends his flock like a shepherd: He gathers the lambs in his arms and carries them close to his heart; he gently leads those that have young.

Isaiah 40:11

And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.

Romans 8:28

But [Jesus] was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed.

THANKSGIVING: A TIME TO REMEMBERby Barbara Rainey Continued From Page Nine

Just before our family began eating our Thanksgiving brunch, we would all write (on special place cards) five things for which we were thankful to God. On each of our plates were five kernels of corn—a reminder of the Pilgrims’ daily ration during one of their first difficult winters. As we ate, we passed a basket around the table, each person placed one kernel of corn at a time into the basket and told of one thing for which he or she was thankful. The basket went around the table five times.

I’ve saved all of these place cards as reminders of how God has worked in our lives. Here, for example, are some of the things our children wrote a number of years ago on one Thanksgiving:

“I’m thankful for being able to have a family.”“I’m thankful Ashley got to come home from college for Thanksgiving.”“I’m thankful for having a big sister.”“I’m thankful for God in my life.”“I’m thankful for my ministry at my high school.”“I’m thankful for my sisters and all they’ve taught me about relationships.”“I’m thankful I got to shoot a deer!”“I’m thankful for a great brother.”

Dennis and I were thrilled to hear the kids actually thank God for each other! After so many years of arguing and fighting with each other, they were finally beginning to show each other the affection we hope will continue through their lives.

That year we also were touched by something our son Samuel wrote: “I’m thankful for my muscular dystrophy.”

He had been diagnosed with the disease earlier in the year, and we had been through some wrenching, emotional months. While Dennis and I had prayed aloud many times, thanking God by faith for how He would use this disease in all our lives, this was the first time we heard Samuel express this sentiment.

It was a big step of faith for him. And it provided another sign that our children were truly learning the authentic spirit of Thanksgiving.

MEMORIESPart Two of a Three Part Series

Weekends were for family trips or staying home to play,We all did things together even go to church to pray.

When we did our weekend trips depending on the weather,No one stayed at home because we liked to be together.

Sometimes we would separate to do things on our own,But we knew where the others were without our own cell phone.

Then there were the movies with your favorite movie star,And nothing can compare to watching movies in your car.

Then there were the picnics at the peak of summer season,Pack a lunch and find some trees and never need a reason.

Get a baseball game together with all the friends you know,Have real action playing ball and no games on video.

THANKS

Thank you, God, for everything,The big things and the small.

For “every good gift comes from God”...

The giver of them all.And all too often we accept, without any thanks or praise,

The gifts God sends as blessings, each day in many ways.

And so at this Thanksgiving Time, we offer up a prayer...

To thank you, God, for giving us a lot more than our share.

First, thank you for the little thingsThat often come our way,

The things we take for grantedBut don’t mention when we pray,

The unexpected courtesy, the thoughtful, kindly deed,

A hand reached out to help us in the time of sudden need.

Oh, make us more aware, dear God, of little daily graces

That come to us with “sweet surprise”

From never-dreamed-of places.

Then, thank you for the “Miracles”We are much too blind to see,

And give us new awareness of our many gifts from Thee,

And help us to remember that the Key of Life and Living

Is to make each prayer a Prayer of Thanks

And every day Thanksgiving

CHURCH ETIQUETTE

What is Church Etiquette? Webster’s standard dictionary describers Etiquette as rules for socially acceptable behavior. How does that apply to church? There should be order and reverence in God’s House. We welcome God when we pray and conduct ourselves in such a way that invites His presence. When we talk needlessly and walk in the middle of the sermon, we disrespect God. To help maintain respect and order in God’s House. Listed below are a few etiquette suggestions:

Please use outside aisle if you must walk during service.

Do not walk when scripture is being read.Don’t chew gum during worship service.Turn off cell phones and beepers when possible. (If you have a need for these devices, please put them on vibrate).Don’t let your children play with your cell phone. Teach them to pay attention.Talk less and praise more. (If you whisper, let it be a prayer).Do not bring drinks into the sanctuary.

This is just a partial list, as you read this, I am sure you can think of a few more that could be added, if so, keep them in mind or better yet, share them with each other.

“Let all things be done decently and in order.”

The Logan Family: A Great African American DynastyBy Dorothy G. Kapenstein

Warren Logan (1857-1947) and his wife, Adella Hunt Logan (1863-1915), were responsible for establishing the roots of a distinguished family tree. They were

both educators and civil rights activists. Adella Logan was also a talented author and a tireless worker for the rights of women. Both husband and wife devoted the major part of their careers to the service of Tuskegee Institute (now Tuskegee University) in Alabama. In this essay, I will trace the careers of Warren and Adella Logan and also the careers of their children, Myra Logan Alston M.D. and Arthur Courtney Logan M.D. as examples of two who carried on their parents’ ideals of love and service to the community, as did all of the Logan descendants. Tuskegee was the creation of black educator Booker T. Washington. Like Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr, Washington was a man who had a dream. When the Civil War ended, Washington dreamed of providing freed slaves and other young African Americans with meaningful education and vocational training that would prepare them for jobs and also prepare them for full life as United States citizens. Washington truly believed that this idea would eventually lead to healing and reconciliation between the nation’s races. Washington himself was born into slavery. After being freed at the end of the Civil War, he studied at Hampton Normal and Agricultural Institute (now Hampton

University) in Hampton Roads, Virginia. He taught at Hampton for a few years and also worked as an administrator. When prominent citizens of Tuskegee, Alabama decided to found an education center for black students in their town, they hired Washington to be the chief administrator of their new school, based on great recommendations he received from the Hampton staff. Washington brought with him many strategies and techniques that he had learned at Hampton. He also brought some of his Hampton colleagues to be teachers at Tuskegee Institute. The new school opened in 1881.

Warren Logan was one of Washington’s associates from Hampton Institute who came to teach at Tuskegee. Like Washington, Warren Logan was born into slavery but he became free as a little boy. He spent his childhood years in Greensboro, North Carolina. Several sources say that he lived in the home of a Presbyterian minister who had Warren share his son’s lessons. Warren proved to be an excellent student. He decided to seek higher education and was accepted at Hampton Institute in 1874. He graduated in 1878.He met Booker T. Washington in 1875 and they became friends. Later they became colleagues when both young men were appointed to teach at Hampton. When Washington was setting up his new school, Warren Logan was one of a small group of Hampton faculty members who were called to teach at Tuskegee. Logan was first appointed as a teacher of mathematics and bookkeeping. By 1882, he had been named Treasurer. Later he served as Assistant Principal. It is well known that Booker T. Washington became an advisor to U.S. Presidents and a nationally respected consultant on education. Washington was often called away to attend meetings or make speeches and when this happened he named Warren

Logan to step in and manage the school while he was away. Warren Logan eventually served on Tuskegee’s National Board of Trustees. Washington considered Logan to be his second in command as well as his most trusted advisor.

Several sources say that Warren Logan was not only a talented mathematician and accountant, but in addition, he had a good ear for music and a fine singing voice. When he organized his first Tuskegee vocal music group, the Tuskegee Quartet, in 1884. Warren was one of the four male singers. When a full chorus and a band were organized later, Logan directed them both for a time.

Warren Logan married a brilliant and talented woman. She was equally devoted to the task of educating young people and equally pledged to fight for racial justice. She was particularly devoted to getting the right to vote for women. Adella Hunt Logan was born in 1863 in Sparta, Georgia. She was the daughter of a free black woman and a white man who served as a Major in the Confederate Army. He was mostly an absentee father, but he did provide money to allow Adella to attend and graduate from Sparta’s Bass Academy where she earned a teaching certificate at the age of sixteen She then studied at the University of Atlanta and after completing her courses, she received a second certificate because the University did not give degrees to women at that time. In later years, they awarded her an honorary master’s degree.

She taught at the American Missionary School until 1883. At that time, she accepted a teaching position at Tuskegee. She began by teaching classes in literature, history and other social sciences. Then she became the librarian. In 1885, Olivia Davidson, the”Lady Principal”, married the widowed Booker T. Washington.

The Logan Family: A Great African American DynastyBy Dorothy G. KapensteinContinued From Page Twenty

Adella Hunt was named as her successor. Her duties included general supervision of women students, setting up courses and acting as advisor on course selection and in many other areas as well.

By this time, Adella had met and married the very eligible bachelor, Warren Logan. Adele Logan Alexander, Adella’s granddaughter, wrote about her grandmother’s life. She noted that Adella gave birth to nine children between 1890 and 1909 and that three died in infancy. Adella was not able to teach full time, but she continued to be a vital force in Tuskegee’s teacher training department and in the Model School. She was also very active in the Tuskegee Women’s Club, a group that worked to help poor women and their children. Adella was a great advocate of adequate health care for everyone and education for every child. She was a talented writer and she skillfully used her pen to support her advanced ideas. She wrote for a national paper, The Colored American, which strongly backed Booker T. Washington’s stand that African Americans must move slowly and everything would work out. She also wrote for the NAACP magazine, The Crisis, edited by W.E.B. DuBois, who held very strong opposing views.

The year 1915 was a most unhappy one for Adella Logan. According to her granddaughter, Adele Alexander, she was crushed by the slow progress of the suffrage movement and by some strong legislative defeats it received that year. Problems had arisen with her marriage. There might have been other reasons, but whatever the causes, she became extremely depressed and was placed in a mental hospital in Michigan. Then Booker T. Washington became seriously ill.

When Adella heard that he was dying, she rushed home. After his passing, on the day his memorial service was held, Adella jumped from a campus building tower and ended her own life.

Both Adella and Warren left a strong legacy of love and devotion to the African American community. They also left children and grandchildren who added to the legacy. Their daughter, Myra Logan (1908-1977) became a physician who devoted her life to healing others. She graduated from Tuskegee and then went on to Atlanta University for her B.A. She was class valedictorian. She went on to earn an M.S. in Psychology from Columbia University in New York. She obtained her M.D. degree at New York Medical College. She performed both her internship and her residency at Harlem Hospital. She became an excellent and honored surgeon. She made Harlem Hospital the center of her busy medical life. She was the first woman to do heart surgery in an operation she performed in 1943. Several historians agree that this was the ninth such heart surgery ever performed. That same year, she married Charles Alston, a world famous artist. She was an artist herself, a very talented classical pianist. She might have had a career as a concert pianist, but her calling to be a healer was too strong.

Antibiotics were just appearing and she did much serious research on them. Like her mother, she was a talented writer. She wrote frequent articles about her research and they were published in a number of professional journals. She also did valuable research and writing about breast cancer. Her biographers credit her with inventing a type of X-ray that pinpoints differences in density of breast tissues. Her process allowed earlier diagnosis of tumors.

Also like her mother, she was devoted to the causes of equitable health care, social reform and racial justice. She served on the New York State Committee on Discrimination

but resigned in protest when Governor Dewey ignored the Committee’s proposals.

She was deeply involved in the work of the NAACP and she was also active in Planned Parenthood. She served on the New York State Workmen’s Compensation Board after her retirement in 1970. She was honored by election to the prestigious American College of Surgeons both for her many medical achievements and also for her outstanding work in the community.

Arthur Logan (1909-1973) was the youngest child of Adella and Warren Logan. He graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Williams College, Massachusetts in 1931. He received his medical degree in 1934 from Columbia University’s College of Physicians and Surgeons. He was in the first group of black students who integrated the College. He interned at Harlem Hospital and qualified to be a surgeon like his sister. . He then devoted the rest of his life to two tremendous causes- to heal the poor with quality medical care and to bring about racial equity. He and his sister Myra were among the founding members of the Upper Manhattan Medical Group located in Harlem and devoted to bringing top medical care to poor people regardless of race. The patients paid small insurance fees and received great medical care they could not have gotten elsewhere. Historians believe this may have been the ancestor of today’s medical insurance companies. Arthur Logan stayed with the group and was Director of Surgery the rest of his life. Like his sister, he also kept up a large private practice

He devoted much of his time to organizations that worked for the needy. He was Chairman of the Board of Citizens Organized Against Drug Abuse for many years.

He served on the New York City Council Against Poverty and the United Neighborhood Houses of New York until he passed away. He also took a strong stand on decent housing for everyone and supported many groups for this cause.

He was also a vital force in the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960’s. He was a member of the Urban League of Greater New York and became its Director in 1960. He became Director of the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund in 1962. Dr. Logan was the personal physician of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. At the time of Dr. King’s assassination, thousands of poor people, mainly black people, were already in Washington, D.C. and living in tents. Dr. Logan organized a medical team and led the members of it to Washington to care for the marchers. Dr. Logan was also the personal physician of Duke Ellington and Jackie Robinson.

Dr. Logan was married twice. His first marriage ended in divorce. College Professor and writer Adele Logan Alexander was the only child of the marriage. Dr. Logan was called to the Apollo Theatre to treat Marian Bruce (Taylor) a singer there. They were married in 1958. They had one son, Warren Logan. Marian Logan was passionate about the same causes as her husband. They both did fundraising and contributed heavily to the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC). She was the only woman asked to serve on their Board of Directors.

Dr. Logan died in the course of one of his good works. He was on the staff of the Knickerbocker Hospital which gave great health care to the poor. He and his wife helped to raise money for a badly needed new wing.

His body was found on the construction site at the foot of a viaduct on the Henry Hudson Parkway. It is thought he went there to see how the project was going.

The name of the Knickerbocker Hospital was changed to the Arthur C. Logan Memorial Hospital to honor him.

101 KNOWN BLACK HISTORY FACTS

LITTLE KNOWN

Fact #65Ray Charles Robinson (1930 – 2004) a musical genius and pioneer in blending gospel and the blues shortened his name to just Ray Charles to prevent confusion with the great boxer Sugar Ray Robinson. Ray Charles began going blind at an early age and was completely blind by the time he was 7 years old, but has never relied upon a cane, or a guide dog. He was one of the first inductees into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame at its inaugural ceremony in 1986.

Fact #66Walker Smith Jr. (1921 – 1989) became known as Sugar Ray Robinson he borrowed his friend Ray Robinson’s Amateur Athletic Union card and became the Golden Glove Lightweight champion in 1940 under the borrowed name. Smith’s boxing style was described as “sweet as sugar” and the name Sugar Ray Robinson stuck. Considered the greatest boxer of all time, Robinson held the world welterweight title from 1946 to 1951 and was middleweight champion five times between 1951 and 1960 –the first boxer in history

to win a divisional world championship five times.

Fact #67Cathay Williams (1842 – ) was the first and only known female Buffalo Soldier. She was born into slavery and worked for the Union army during the Civil War. She posed as a man and enlisted as Williams Cathay in the 38th infantry in 1866. She was given a medical discharge in 1868.

Fact #68Josiah Henson (1789 – 1883) fled slavery in Maryland in 1830 and founded a settlement in Ontario, Canada for fugitive slaves. His autobiography “The Life of Josiah Henson, Formerly a Slave, Now an Inhabitant of Canada, as Narrated by Himself” (1849) is believed to have been Harriet Beecher Stowe’s inspiration for the main character in “Uncle Tom’s Cabin”. Henson’s cabin in Maryland still stands today and is a national landmark. Josiah Henson’s grandson, Mathew Henson, was part of the first successful U.S. expedition to the North Pole in 1909.

Fact #69Harriet Ann Jacobs (1813 – 1897) was a slave who published “Incidents in the Life of A Slave Girl” in 1861 under the pseudonym Linda Brent. The book chronicles the hardships and sexual abuse she experienced as a female growing up in slavery. Jacobs fled slavery in 1835 by hiding in a crawlspace in her grandmother’s attic for nearly seven years before traveling to Philadelphia by boat, and eventually to New York. Jacobs was active in feminist anti-slavery movements.

OUT AT HOME PLATE

It was during post-season playoffs that the baseball team found itself batting in the bottom of the ninth and tied at 5-all. The first batter flied out to right field, the second batter struck out. Up to the plate stepped the team’s last hope. He let the first pitch go by-ball one. Two foul balls and an outside pitch later, the count was 2-2. On the fifth pitch the batter connected with a crack that told him the ball was really going somewhere.

The center fielder faded back fast, hoping the ball would fall short of the fence. By the time the runner reached second, the ball had caromed off the top edge of the fence and onto the grass, where the fielder scooped it up, and-scanning the infield and grasping the situation in an instant-made his throw. As the runner rounded second, the third-base coach gauged the odds of his man scoring-and waved him home. The shortstop took the cutoff, twirled, and rifled the ball to home plate just as the runner attempted to slide under the catcher’s glove.

The umpire pumped his fist at the plate. “You’re out!” he yelled.

The dugouts went ballistic. In the grandstand there was nothing short of mayhem. In all the cheering and booing, only a few spectators saw the plate ump remove his mask and walk out towards second base. But by the time he gestured the other two umps toward him, the crowd had quieted-half of them dreading and half of them hoping for the plate ump to reverse his call after conferring with the other men in black.

Finally the plate umpire spoke. “The runner is out,” he shouted, “not because he was tagged at home, but because he didn’t touch first base!”

It was true. Not only had the batter failed to beat the ball home-he had run so hard that he hadn’t even touched first base.

You can do a lot of religious things in your life. You can do a lot of good and noble things, but unless you touch first base, it won’t matter too much.

Nicodemus was a good man, but he hadn’t touched first base. The rich ruler of Luke 18 was a good man, but he also missed something in his life. To Nicodemus Jesus said, “I tell you the truth, no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again” (John 3:3). Jesus doesn’t want good people; instead, He wants new people, changed people who have made Him first in their lives.

THANKSGIVING DELIGHTS

On Thanksgiving Day we’re thankful forOur blessings all year through,

For family we dearly love,For good friends, old and new.

For sun to light and warm our days,For stars that glow at night,

For trees of green and skies of blue,And puffy clouds of white.

We’re grateful for our eyes that seeThe beauty all around,

For arms to hug, and legs to walk,And ears to hear each sound.

The list of all we’re grateful forWould fill a great big book;

Our thankful hearts find new delightsEverywhere we look!

POSITIVE THOUGHTS

You can build a throne with bayonets, but you can’t sit on it for long.

Boris Yeltsin

The natural flights of the human mind are not from pleasure to pleasure, but from hope to hope.

Samuel Johnson

To do injustice is more disgraceful than to suffer it. Plato

Know yourself. Don’t accept your dog’s admiration as conclusive evidence that you are wonderful.

Ann Landers

IN THE SMALL STUFF

• Time cannot be controlled. You can only control yourself.

• Depending on your spiritual condition, being alone with God will either be unnerving or invigorating.

• The time to find moments of stillness and quiet is when it’s the most difficult to do so.

• Live humbly and pray likewise.

• Don’t pray for a lighter load. Pray for a stronger back.

• Prayer changes things.
