“Message from the Editor”This month’s scripture is from Ephesians 5:15-21, “See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise, Redeeming the time, because the days are evil. Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is. And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit; Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord; Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ; Submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God.” MERRY CHRISTMAS!! Well, another Christmas celebration is upon us, where some of us celebrate the birth of Jesus, and some of us celebrate the exchanging of gifts, decorating, holiday parties, and other festivities. Why not spend time with your family this Christmas and discuss the real meaning of Christmas --- the birth of Jesus Christ. What happened to Merry Christmas? That’s right. We used to always say Merry Christmas. Now it’s Have a Happy Holiday. Have a Happy Holiday? When did we take Jesus out of Christmas and what can we do to bring it back? How can we get back to the real meaning of Christmas? Spreading the word is one way. Keep saying Merry Christmas and not Happy Holiday. Spending time with your family is another way. Build relationships, instill family values and morals, learn more about the bible and God’s Word, learn more about your children’s lives, etc. The options are endless. The more you participate in your child’s life, the more they will appreciate the time spent. If we have no time for our children now while they are young, then when they get older they may not have time for us when we are old. We ought to make the most of each opportunity. Be a part of your children’s lives and make family time a priority. Make plans to spend time together so quality experiences can occur and your child will have a lifetime of memories to cherish forever. Your family is a gift from God. Spend time with your loved ones today. Tomorrow may be too late. Jesus is the reason for the season. And don’t forget to say “Merry Christmas”!!!

HOW TO FIND A RELIABLE SITTERby Stephanie Vozza You wouldn’t walk up to a teenage girl at the mall, ask her to hold your purse and walk away, but trusting your children with a new babysitter can feel just like that. So how do you find a good sitter — someone you can trust?

Where To LookOther parents are often great sources of sitters, if they’re willing to share! Be sure to ask for both positive and negative feedback.

Some churches, synagogues and neighborhood associations have lists of members who are available for babysitting. High school and college campuses often have newsletters or bulletin boards where you can post jobs. Many community newspapers offer domestic help wanted postings. Or consider organizing a co-op where

parents take turns watching each other’s children for evenings out.

In our high-tech age, a convenient source of sitters is online referral agencies, such as Sittercity.com or Babysitters.com, which match parents with local sitters and provide feedback and other resources.

What To PayBabysitters.com CEO Michael Cravens says teenage sitters typically have less childcare experience and charge a lower hourly rate. “Parents with school-aged children can benefit by hiring a teenage sitter and save some money on the rate,” he says.

“Also, many teenage sitters have at least one parent that is just a phone call away if they run into a situation that requires some assistance,” Cravens adds. “Parents with infants and toddlers may want to get a sitter with more childcare experience, who

is usually an adult sitter. The hourly rate can go up significantly, but the peace of mind … is usually worth it.”

Hourly rates can vary greatly, from $5 to $15 per hour. Remember, you often get what you pay for.

Getting StartedWhen you find suitable candidates, Genevieve Thiers, founder and CEO of Sittercity.com, says parents should set up an interview with at least three sitters.

“Have each spend an hour or two with the children while the parent is still at home,” she says. “It’s a great opportunity for the children to be a part of the selection process. After all, they will be spending the most time with the candidate that is selected.”

The idea at this time is twofold: to allow our praise and worship team to introduce the congregation to new praise songs and simultaneously to allow members of our community who work on Sundays an opportunity to worship with us.

3. CinnamonStudies suggest cinnamon may have a stabilizing effect on blood sugar levels. This could curtail appetite, particularly in people with type 2 diabetes, Bonci says. Nearly everyone can benefit from cinnamon in its traditional role. Stir some into your coffee, tea, or yogurt to add sweetness without adding calories.

4. Hot PeppersHot peppers contain a flavorless compound called capsaicin. It’s more plentiful in spicy habaneros, but also occurs in jalapeños. This compound appears to curb appetite and speed up the metabolism slightly, but only for a short time. Bonci doubts that this has a significant impact on weight loss. But, she says, people tend to eat less when their food is spicy.

5. Green TeaSeveral studies suggest green tea may promote weight loss by stimulating the body to burn abdominal fat. Green tea contains catechins, a type of phytochemical that may briefly affect the metabolism. To get the most benefit, you may need to drink green tea several times a day. Bonci recommends taking your tea hot, because it takes longer to drink, slowing your calorie intake and providing a soothing, mindful experience.

6. GrapefruitWhile grapefruit doesn’t have any magical fat-burning properties, it can help dieters feel full with fewer calories. Bonci attributes this to the plentiful amounts of soluble fiber, which take longer to digest. Having half a grapefruit or a glass of grapefruit juice before a meal may help fill you up, so you eat fewer calories during the meal.

7. WatermelonFoods that are high in water content take up more room in the gut, Bonci

says. This signals the body that you’ve had enough to eat and leaves less room for other foods. Many raw fruits and vegetables are chock-full of water and nutrients, but low in calories. Watermelon is a great example. It’s a rich source of the antioxidant lycopene and adds some vitamins A and C to your day, too.

LOWERING YOUR BLOOD PRESSUREPart One of a Two Part Series

Exercise and High Blood PressureHigh blood pressure affects about 1 in 3 American adults and increases your risk of heart disease and stroke. Exercise, weight management, and a healthy diet are important ways to help prevent high blood pressure. Working out also boosts the effectiveness of blood pressure medication if you’re already being treated for hypertension. Be sure to check with your doctor before starting a fitness program.

Put the Fun Back in ExerciseFind activities you enjoy and aim for 30 minutes a day of “exercise” on most days of the week. Daily housework, gardening, washing windows, using the stairs, carrying your groceries, walking at the mall, or riding bikes with the kids all add up to exercise that benefits your heart.

Tip: Increase activity by parking at the end of the lot, or get off the bus a stop early and walk to your destination.

Hit the GymYou don’t need to belong to a gym to become more active. But some people find it easier to focus on their workout in a gym setting. As an added bonus, the trainer at your local fitness center can teach you how to use the equipment properly to avoid injury. If any move feels wrong, check with your trainer. Depending on your health and physical condition, some exercises may not be recommended.

Strengthen Your HeartResistance exercise can be done with in many ways, such as with free weights, weight machines, exercise bands, or by doing abdominal crunches or curl-ups. Resistance training helps reduce body fat, increase muscle mass, and boost your metabolic rate. Losing as little as 10 pounds can reduce or help prevent high blood pressure in many overweight individuals. Check with your doctor before starting a new weight-training program.

Swimming for 30 minutes reduces the amount of circulating adrenaline in the body and relaxes blood vessels. Swimming can help lower your pulse rate and lower blood pressure.

How Much Exercise Is Enough?Regular exercise may prevent or control high blood pressure. Moderate-level aerobic activities, such as brisk walking, for 30 minutes a day may be enough to keep you off medications or help them work more effectively. Exercise can reduce your blood pressure readings by as much as 5-15 points. Gradually increase the intensity of your workout to continue lowering your blood pressure to safer levels.

Getting StartedHaven’t exercised in a while? Start slowly to prevent injuries. Start with 10 to 15 minutes of exercise you enjoy, such as walking around the block or on a treadmill. As you get stronger, increase the time and intensity of your workout until you reach the goal of 30 minutes each day. Avoid sudden vigorous exercise or cramming your workout routine into a couple days in an attempt to catch up, which can lead to injury.

ADOPTED BY GOD

Just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before Him. In love He predestined us to adoption as sons through Jesus Christ. Ephesians 1:4,5

I always knew, from this verse in Ephesians, that we have been “adopted” by God. We did not know Him or seek Him, but He reached down and chose us to be part of His family.

But the meaning of that passage never hit home until 1983, when God gave us our fifth child.

Barbara and I were in New York City, about to speak at a marriage conference. We received a message to call a friend back in Little Rock, and when we saw the name we looked at each other. It was the name of an obstetrician.

For three years we had prayed about the possibility of adopting a child, and we had mentioned it to this doctor. So when we called him he said, “We’ve got a baby for you.”

We said, “You what?”

“We have a teenage girl who is having a baby right now and she told us some time ago, when she first came in, that she wanted the baby raised in a good Christian home. We thought that yours might be a likely one.”

Soon we found ourselves conducting a family conference by speakerphone with our four kids. “Hey kids, how would you all like to have another baby?” The unanimous cheer went up, “Yeah!” They did not even need to vote on it.

So we returned home to a newly enlarged family. The little girl’s name was Deborah. I believe she has been placed divinely in our home. We adopted her-making her our own. And

I believe God feels the same way about you and me. We are His. We have been redeemed and placed in the family and given an inheritance. We are in God’s family! We are His adopted sons and daughters.

Discuss: What type of life did God take you from when He “adopted” you? Describe the changes in your life since you’ve been adopted into His family. Pray: Thank God for causing you to be holy and blameless before Him because of His Son, Jesus Christ.

Brett joined the church when he was fourteen. In the sixty years following his confirmation, he set foot in a church no more than a half-dozen times. Just prior to his seventy-fifth birthday, Brett died and stood before the Lord.

The Lord said, “You joined my church long years ago. Why?”

Brett stood speechless and ashamed. No answer or excuse, and Brett had many of them, seemed adequate. No apology covered his negligence. All Brett could do was hang his head and cry, for he only now began to realize why he had needed the “church”.

If we forget our Lord, we will find ourselves steeped in shame when we stand before Him. To call Him Lord, Master, Guardian, Friend requires commitment on our part. We cannot take continually without giving something back. Remember the Lord, and speak forth with joy in His presence, for you have known Him, and indeed He knows you.

PRAYER: Lord, forgive me when I neglect You and turn to other things. Help me to keep You fully in my mind and heart. Prepare me for Your glory. Amen.

John and his brother James followed in the footsteps of their father Zebedee and became fishermen. Their friends, the brothers Andrew and Peter, were also fishermen. All four were called to be His disciples by Christ early in His ministry.

In his gospel, John gave us firsthand accounts of many of the Savior’s miracles, beginning with the wedding at Calla where Jesus turned the water into wine, all the way to Jesus’ visitations after His resurrection. Although John did not record all the miracles he saw, he offered ample proof that Jesus is the Son of God.

John’s gospel makes effective use of metaphor: In it Jesus is a Shepherd to His flock, the Living Bread and the Water of Life, the Light of the World, and the True Vine. John was a brilliant thinker, an eloquent writer, and passionate in his devotion to the Savior. So much so that from the cross Jesus asked him to care for His mother.

After Jesus’ ascension, John labored among the churches in Asia Minor and is credited with writing Revelation and the epistles of John. Historians believe that of the original twelve disciples only John died a natural death in his old age.

Her greatest joy came from watching her children and grandchildren succeed. She was constantly present during her families milestones, including weddings, graduations, and birthdays. Holiday dinners were frequently held at her home, and you could always find her cooking, smiling, or sharing stories. Her last words to her children were “let me go, I want to go to Heaven”. She is gone, but will sadly be missed.

Mr. Frank Dean was born on May 1, 1912 in

Georgia. He was educated at the little school house, and completed up to the sixth grade.

Later in life he relocated to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Here he met his wife of many years, Beatrice McLaughlin. From this union two children were born, Alfred

McLaughlin and Paulette Samba. In 1988, after many years of marriage Beatrice went on to glory. Although, not an avid church goer, he was definitely a believer in Jesus Christ. His belief was that “God was everywhere.” Everyone wonders how he lived a hundred years; he would attribute this to the 23rd Psalm, “The Lord is My Shepherd.”

Around the neighborhood, Mr. Dean was lovingly referred to as Mr. Feel So Fine. He considered himself a natural ladies magnet. Not only was he funny and friendly, but he was an outspoken man, “with the silk hair” who loved to dance and loved his wife, Beatrice. He taught his grandchildren that, “a real man is not completely dressed unless he wears a hat.”

He was a member of the Big Brother/Sisters program, an activist in the Boys and Girls Club, Block Captain of the 3600 Block of Brandywine Street, and took pride in participating in Philadelphia’s beautiful community. He was preceded in death by his wife, son, Alfred and sister, Mattie.

On, Tuesday, October 16, 2012, Frank was called from labor to reward. He leaves to cherish and celebrate in his memory: his daughter, Paulette Samba; grandchildren, Aquilla Rouse, Ghaiha Samba, Marie Samba, and Deanna Samba; eight great granddaughters, two great-grandsons; and a host of other relatives, neighbors and friends.

L C Willis was born on Monday, April 12, 1937 in Macon, Georgia to the late Grady and Lula Willis. L C was one of two children blessed to this union. He began his education in the Macon, Georgia public school system. L Chis parents and his sister Annie with whom he was very close left Georgia and moved to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1953.

L C met, courted, and married Helen May Forden, and they have been together a happy fifty-four years.

L C had various jobs before he settled in the construction business. He remained with the same company for forty years before retiring.

L C loved life; he enjoyed sharing stories with his close friend Deacon James Fuller, while they were fishing with his close buddies Bubba and Art; his two favorite spirituals were “I Got a Feeling Everything is Going to be Alright” and “Precious Lord”; and most importantly, he always loved traveling with his family and friends. L C was an impeccable dresser with a wonderful sense of style that complimented his beautiful smile.

On Saturday, October 27, 2012 God in His infinite wisdom called our beloved L C home.

L C leaves to cherish fond memories: the love of his life, his wife Helen; his two children, son Faraaj, and daughter Sharon; his sister Annie; his nephew Russell; one niece Karen; a great nephew Tyree; and a great-great nephew Jahlil, other relatives and friends.

Calvary member, Deaconess Annie B. Smith, wife of Calvary member Deacon Henry Smith.

Annie Beatrice Smith, the oldest of three children, was born November 13, 1923 in Philadelphia, Pa to Ausie (Jack) and Georgia Anna Stewart. Her brothers, Ulysses (Sonny) and Paul preceded her in death.

Annie joined Calvary Baptist Church in 1938 under the pastorate of Reverend C. David Foster and was an active member of the Youth Choir which later changed to The Excelsior Choir.

She was educated in the Philadelphia Public Schools graduating from John Bartram High School in June, 1941.

As a faithful and active member of Calvary Baptist Church for over 70 years, Annie was on the Deaconess Board, active in Hospitality Ministry, and a member of the Hospitality Club. She was also an Eastern Star.

Annie was employed at the Quarter Master for many years at the onset of World War II.

She met and married Henry Smith on July 21, 1951. To this union no children were born but they had two godchildren, William Flournoy, III and Kimberly Jones.

Annie Beatrice Smith departed this life to be with her heavenly father on Friday, November 9, 2012.

She leaves to mourn her beloved husband, Henry; one brother-in-law, Carol Smith; one sister-in-law, Beulah Lewis (Masceo): a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins. Annie will be sadly missed by her many friends, neighbors and Calvary Family.

The Pennsylvania Housing Finance Agency (PHFA) is now accepting applications from struggling homeowners for the newly reinstated Homeowners Emergency Mortgage Assistance Program (HEMAP).

For nearly 30 years, HEMAP provided emergency mortgage assistance to more than 46,000 Pennsylvania families who, through no fault of their own, are in danger of losing their homes to foreclosure.

HEMAP was eliminated in 2011 but was just recently reinstated utilizing a portion of the settlement money that the state is receiving from a joint federal-state agreement with the nation’s five largest mortgage servicers.

On Sunday October 21, 2012 following a lengthy illness, the Almighty God gently closed the eyes of our beloved mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, and carried her home to her eternal resting place.

Flossie Jones Beale was born to Ruth Gordon Jones and Robert Jones on

May 2, 1922 in Prince Edward County of Prospect, Virginia. She was one of twelve siblings and six preceded her in death. After her mother died, Flossie moved to Washington D.C. and was raised by her aunt Valarie prior to moving to Philadelphia. She completed her formal education in the Philadelphia Public school system and graduated from John Bartram High School in June of 1940.

Flossie married the late Junius Beale Sr. They were married for over 60 years. From this union two children were born, Brenda Beale Smith and Junius Beale Jr. Both loved and appreciated the life lessons, compassion, and guidance their mother provided. Following their father’s death in 2009, they did everything they could to make her life happy and comfortable.

Flossie was employed at the Bonnell Dress Company in Camden N. J. where she worked as a Seamstress. Following her retirement in 1974, she worked as a teacher in a neighborhood day care and part-time as a Sales Clerk at Strawbridge & Clothier during the holiday season.

Flossie has been a faithful member of the Calvary Baptist Church since the 1940’s. She was involved in the Young Adult Choir, Mite Missionary Ministry, and Sunday School Ministry as a teacher and treasurer. She constantly volunteered her services for church benefits including serving dinners to the less fortunate at the “Annual Thanksgiving Dinner Served” event.

One of her favorite pastimes was shopping; she was a Fashionista, Her sense of style and fashion attributed to her eloquent look containing the latest hats, shoes, and dresses. She loved to travel and enjoyed trips to Virginia and other places like the Calvary Women’s Retreat. She also enjoyed Biblical Plays at the Sight and Sound Theater.

William James (Count) Basie (1904-1984): Bandleader, Performer and Composer By Dorothy G. Kapenstein

Most historians of American popular music agree that this musical form has been deeply and strongly influenced by the music of

African Americans. Much of today’s Rock and Roll, Hip Hop, Soul, Country Music and Gospel have big, long and deep roots in the Black past that have yielded up the strong plants that form American popular music. The blues, ragtime and jazz all grew from the hearts and souls of our country’s black musicians.

Jazz themes dominated the scene of American popular of the early 20th century. The playing style came to be called swing music. A commentator on the website swingmusic.net has written: “Jazz music was one of America’s truly original contributions to the world art community. The period of the 1930’s and 1940’s is thus far the only age in history when the popularity of jazz eclipsed all other genres of music in the U.S. It is an epoch known as the Big Band era, and during it swing music was king. The popularity of jazz and the way of playing it in the swing music style waned after World War II. However, a few big bands like those of Duke Ellington, Woody Herman, Count Basie and others upheld the tradition into the 1970s and beyond.

The ugly hand of segregation had a firm grip on American life during the big band era. There were black swing bands and white swing bands. There were famous white bands led by the Dorsey brothers, Tommy and Jimmy, Benny Goodman,

Woody Herman, Glen Miller and Artie Shaw. There were equally famous black bands led by Fletcher Henderson, Bennie Moten, Cab Calloway, Lionel Hampton, Duke Ellington and Count Basie. A number of music historians give Benny Goodman credit for breaking the color barrier in 1936. Benny was working on plans for a recording session and he wanted only the best players. The black jazz pianist Teddy Wilson was one of the best and he was free at the time. Benny hired him, ignoring a barrage of protests and unwanted advice. Later, Benny hired Lionel Hampton to play with his band. Music critics said that Benny was colorblind and cared only about the music and not the color of the player who was producing it.

The big bands played in theatres and nightclubs and they were often booked at hotels with elegant dining rooms that offered fine dining and dancing. In addition, they were booked into ballrooms and dance palaces that arose in many areas of the country. Many writers believe that one reason for the great popularity of the swing bands was that they played such exiting dance music and Americans of every size, shape and color loved to dance. It is ironic that the black musicians were hired to entertain in such places, but in the time of segregation, there was no way they would ever be permitted to sit down and eat on the premises.

William James Basie is one of the best loved and best remembered bandleaders of this era. He first saw the light of day in Red Bank, New Jersey. He was born into a musical family. His father, Harvey Basie, worked for a wealthy white family, first as a coachman and later as a handyman. He played a horn. Young Basie’s mother, Lily Childs Basie, was a pretty good piano player. In later years, Basie recalled that there was always a piano in the house during his

childhood years and that his mother gave him his first lessons. Then she hired a professional teacher to give him lessons at 25 cents a lesson, a high price in those days!

Young William Basie attended public schools and got an education of sorts, but music was filling his life more and more. He enjoyed playing the piano but he was soon attracted to the drums and he really began to feel he could be a drummer. There was another Black teenager, Sonny Greer, who was already such a splendid drummer that Basie lost heart for playing the drums. He quickly settled on the piano. Sonny Greer later achieved lifelong fame and success as the drummer for Duke Ellington’s Band. Basie dropped out of school and never got his high school diploma. Later, he said this was one of the biggest mistakes of his life.

By this time he knew that making music was his destiny. He began to get gigs playing the piano. This era was the heyday of silent movies. Many movie theatre managers hired piano players to provide suitable background music to accompany the action on the screen. Young Basie got work here and there and he got a few gigs playing in local cabarets or bars where entertainment was offered. In a short time he knew he would have to move on to get more work, and he made his move to Harlem in the early 1920s. This lively section of upper Manhattan was the center of a big and ever growing Black population. At this time, it was also the home of the great and wonderful flowering of Black culture known as the Harlem Renaissance. Countless young Black artists, writers and musicians arrived on the flourishing scene looking for training and job opportunities.

William Basie picked the right place and the right time. Some of the most talented African American piano artists of the era were gathered in Harlem and they were generous in sharing their talent and learning with younger players. Basie watched them all and heard them all- James P. Johnson, Willie the Lion, Earl Fatha Hines and Fats Domino, among others. Domino was a splendid piano artist and he was equally gifted as an organist. Basie studied Waller’s organ techniques and became a good organist. This got him more work, since some movie houses had organs.

Basie’s next move was to get into vaudeville and travel as a piano accompanist to musical acts. His gigs took him to distant places such as Montreal in Canada, Kansas City, Missouri and Omaha, Nebraska. Kansas City was a busy, lively center for jazz music and the style played there was very popular and came to be known as “Kansas City jazz.” Basie was stranded in Kansas City on his second trip. TOBA, the booking company that got the jobs and paid the salaries, crashed. This left Basie without work and with not enough money to get a ticket home. However, he was lucky. The town was alive with bands and he got a job with a group known as Walter Page and his Blue Devils. In 1928, this band broke up. Once again, Basie was out of work and once again, he got lucky. Bennie Moten, an up and coming bandleader, hired some of the Blue Devils to join his band and Basie was among them. Basie remained with the Moten band until 1935. At that time Bennie Moten, a young and active man, died of complications from a badly done tonsil operation.

Basie gathered together some of the members of the Moten Band and they formed a new band called the Barons of Rhythm. A little later more former Moten band members and other instrumentalists joined and the group became known as Count Basie and his band. Why Count Basie? Some music historians say there was already a “Duke” Ellington and that a bandleader as smooth and suave as William Basie also deserved a noble title. Others write that the noble name was for the Count’s elegant piano playing style. In any case the new name stuck. Count Basie always led the band from his piano.

Once again good luck followed Count Basie and the band. They began to get gigs in local nightclubs and dance halls. One of their concerts at the Reno Club was aired on radio Station WXBY. Other radio shows followed. John Hammond, a music critic and record producer, somehow picked up one of the Basie band’s radio broadcasts. He became their mentor and wrote rave reviews about their music. He arranged for their first recording session with Decca Records. Later Basie and the band would record for Columbia Records and finally for Pablo Records.

They were now well along the way to success. They moved on to Chicago, another great center of big band music and they were acclaimed there. Finally, they arrived in Harlem the vibrant, swinging, colorful hub of African American culture. They were invited to perform in the finest clubs and theatres. They produced a host of best-selling recordings. They appeared in a number of movies and often appeared in radio. In addition to their prime New York gigs, they performed concerts in many areas of the nation. The public loved Count Basie and his band members loved him too.

Big band music fell apart by the end of World War II in the mid 1940’s. Most of the bands dissolved

and never got back together again. Count Basie had to let most of his players go, but he was able to keep some in a small combo. They toured the country and held on. By the mid, 1950’s, things got better. Old players came back and new ones were hired. Basie and the band were back in business as a true big band and as good as ever. They toured Europe and on a tour of England, Queen Elizabeth II honored them with a command performance. They also toured Japan and Southeast Asia. In between all these activities, the band continued to tour this country and some areas in Canada. They made new movies.

Jazz fans came to call the two Basie bands “the Old Testament band” and “the New Testament band.” This was not meant to be disrespectful. The early band was less formal and used a lot of improvisation. For the later band, Basie favored a more structured pace and he hired professionals to arrange the music. Both bands attracted great vocalists. The old one featured such great singers as Jimmy Rushing, Billie Holiday and Helen Humes. The new band had such star singers as Joe Williams, Sarah Vaughan, Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennett. We should mention all the great instrumentalists who formed the heart and soul of both bands, but time and space do not permit this. Count Basie appeared in concerts with Louie Armstrong and often said that he regretted they never recorded together. Count Basie also appeared in concert where he played piano duets with the great piano artist, Oscar Peterson.

Count Basie remained as the leader of his band until severe illness claimed him. In his last years, when he was weakened by illnesses, he conducted his band from a wheelchair. After his death, some of his musicians continued to lead the band. The band received many honors and awards.

The Count received so many personal wards that we cannot mention more than a few here.

Count Basie has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. He was elected to the New Jersey Hall of Fame, the Long Island Hall of Fame and the Grammy Hall of Fame. The Red Bank, New Jersey Theatre in his hometown has been renamed the Count Basie Theatre for him. A Street in Harlem has been renamed for him and it crosses a street named for Paul Robeson.

Count Basie and the band were honored with an invitation to play at one of President Kennedy’s inaugural balls in 1961. Other high honors came after he passed. In 1981, he received the Kennedy Center Honors. In 1985, President Ronald Reagan conferred the Presidential Medal of Freedom on him. He was the subject of a United States stamp issued by the United States Post Office in 1996.

Count Basie’s band has left an indelible mark on the American popular music scene. The Count’s biography in Gale’s Music Profiles offers these words of explanation: “Whether viewed as a bandleader, composer arranger, paymaster, chief editor, Count Basie will always be closely associated with his band. It will be the burden of all big bands past present and future to stand in comparison with the Basie band. It has been the standard for half a century. One reason may well be that Count Basie, he of the impeccable taste, was not only its leader, but also its greatest fan. He would not permit it to play less than its best. He loved it.”

GOD SAID MILK

A young man had been to Wed. night Bible Study. The pastor had shared about listening to God and obeying the Lord’s voice. The young man couldn’t help but wonder, “Does God still speak to people?”

After service, he went out with some friends for coffee and pie and they discussed the message. Several different ones talked about how God had led them in different ways. It was about ten o’clock when the young man started driving home. Sitting in his car, he just began to pray, “God...If you still speak to people speak to me. I will listen. I will do my best to obey.”

As he drove down the main street of his town, he had the strangest thought to stop and buy a gallon of milk. He shook his head and said out loud, “God is that you?” He didn’t get a reply and started on toward home.

But again, the thought, buy a gallon of milk. The young man thought about Samuel and how he didn’t recognize the voice of God, and how little Samuel ran to Eli. “Okay, God, in case that is you, I will buy the milk.” It didn’t seem like too hard a test of obedience. He could always use the milk.

He stopped and purchased the gallon of milk and started off toward home. As he passed Seventh Street, he again felt the urge, “Turn down that street.” This is crazy he thought and drove on past the intersection. Again, he felt that he should turn down Seventh Street. At the next intersection, he turned back and headed down Seventh.

Half-jokingly, he said out loud, “Okay, God, I will.” He drove several blocks, then suddenly, he felt like he should stop. He pulled over to the curb and looked around. He was in a semi-commercial area of town. It wasn’t the best but it wasn’t the worst of neighborhoods either. The businesses

were closed and most of the houses looked dark like the people were already in bed.

Again, he sensed something, “Go and give the milk to the people in the house across the street.” The young man looked at the house. It was dark and it looked like the people were either gone or they were already asleep He started to open the door and then sat back in the car seat.

“Lord, this is insane. Those people are asleep and if I wake them up, they are going to be mad and I will look stupid.” Again, he felt like he should go and give the milk.

Finally, he opened the car door. “Okay God, if this is you, I will go to the door and I will give them the milk. If you want me to look like a crazy person, okay. I want to be obedient. I guess that will count for something but if they don’t answer right away, I am out of here.” He walked across the street and rang the bell. He could hear some noise inside. A man’s voice yelled out, “Who is it? What do you want?”

Then the door opened before the young man could get away. The man was standing there in his jeans and T-shirt. He looked like he just got out of bed. He had a strange look on his face and he didn’t seem too happy to have some stranger standing on his doorstep. “What is it?”

The young man thrust out the gallon of milk. “Here I brought this to you.” The man took the milk and rushed down a hallway, speaking loudly in Spanish. Then from down the hall came a woman carrying the milk toward the kitchen. The man was following her holding a baby. The baby was crying. The man had tears streaming down his face.

THE SMALLEST PIECE

A fourteenth-century Italian stained-glass artist was summoned to design and create a huge portrait for the window of a cathedral in Chartres, France, a place well known for its stained-glass work. He laid all of the pieces he was going to use out on the floor of the cathedral. They were beautiful to behold; most of them were large and colorful. Some of the colors from that time cannot even be reproduced today. Among these awesome pieces of glass was a small, clear piece about as big as your fingernail. As the stained-glass portrait was assembled, that little piece remained on the floor. Only the big colorful pieces of glass were used.

On the day of the window’s completion, the tiny piece of clear glass was still lying on the ground. The entire city gathered to witness the unveiling of the brilliant and beautiful stained-glass portrait. The artist stood in front of the crowd, made his speech, and dramatically pulled down the cloth cover. The crowd gasped at the beauty of the colorful window glowing in the sunlight.

After a few seconds, however, the crowd grew silent. They sensed that something was missing, that the portrait was unfinished. The great artist then walked over to where the little clear piece of glass lay, picked it up, and placed it in the portrait, right in the center of Jesus’ eye. As the sun hit that little piece, it gave off a dazzling sparkle.

The magnificent stained glass window still draws visitors. The first thing they see is that sparkle in Jesus’ eye.

Do you ever feel like that little piece of clear glass! Left out. Untalented. A disappointment. You doubt you can ever do anything for God. Let the story of that last little piece remind you that God thinks of you as the apple of his eye (Psalm 17:8). No matter that in your eyes you don’t measure up to others, you are an important part of the body of Christ. (1 Corinthians 12).
