The Venite is said by all in unison.

Venite Psalm 95:1-7 Come, let us sing to the Lord; * let us shout for joy to the Rock of our salvation. Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving * and raise a loud shout to him with psalms.

For the Lord is a great God, * and a great King above all gods. In his hand are the caverns of the earth, * and the heights of the hills are his also. The sea is his, for he made it, * and his hands have molded the dry land.

Come, let us bow down, and bend the knee, * and kneel before the Lord our Maker. For he is our God, and we are the people of his pasture and the sheep of his hand. * Oh, that today you would hearken to his voice!

The choir sings the Psalm to Plainchant

Psalm 90:1-6, 13-17 Domine, refugium Tone VIII.1

1 Lord, thou hast been our refuge,* from one generation to another.

2 Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever the earth and the world were made,* thou art God from everlasting, and world without end.

3 Thou turnest man to destruction;* again thou sayest, Come again, ye children of men.

13 Turn thee again, O Lord, at the last,* and be gracious unto thy servants.

THE LESSONS

First Lesson Deuteronomy 34:1-12

Moses went up from the plains of Moab to Mount Nebo, to the top of Pisgah, which is opposite Jericho, and the Lord showed him the whole land: Gilead as far as Dan, all Naphtali, the land of Ephraim and Manasseh, all the land of Judah as far as the Western Sea, the Negeb, and the Plain—that is, the valley of Jericho, the city of palm trees—as far as Zoar. The Lord said to him, “This is the land of which I swore to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, saying, ‘I will give it to your descendants’; I have let you see it with your eyes, but you shall not cross over there.” Then Moses, the servant of the Lord, died there in the land of Moab, at the Lord’s command. He was buried in a valley in the land of Moab, opposite Beth-peor, but no one knows his burial place to this day.

Moses was one hundred twenty years old when he died; his sight was unimpaired and his vigor had not abated. The Israelites wept for Moses in the plains of Moab thirty days; then the period of mourning for Moses was ended.

Joshua son of Nun was full of the spirit of wisdom, because Moses had laid his hands on him; and the Israelites obeyed him, doing as the Lord had commanded Moses.

Never since has there arisen a prophet in Israel like Moses, whom the Lord knew face to face. He was unequaled for all the signs and wonders that the Lord sent him to perform in the land of Egypt, against Pharaoh and all his servants and his entire land, and for all the mighty deeds and all the terrifying displays of power that Moses performed in the sight of all Israel.

Magnificat Service in C minor George Dyson (1883-1964)

My soul doth magnify the Lord. And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour. For he hath regarded : the lowliness of his handmaiden: For behold, from henceforth: all generations shall call me blessed. Forhethatismightyhathmagnifiedme:andholyishisName. And his mercy is on them that fear him: throughout all generations. Hehathshewedstrengthwithhisarm:hehathscatteredtheproudinthe imagination of their hearts.

He hath put down the mighty from their seat: and hath exalted the humble and meek. Hehathfilledthehungrywithgoodthings: and the rich he hath sent empty away. He remembering his mercy hath holpen his servant Israel : As he promised to our forefathers, Abraham and his seed for ever.

Children's Sermon

Second Lesson Matthew22:34-46

When the Pharisees heard that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered together, and one of them, a lawyer, asked him a question to test him. “Teacher, which commandment in the law is the greatest?” He said to him, “’You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.’Thisisthegreatestandfirstcommandment.Andasecondislikeit:‘Youshall love your neighbor as yourself.’ On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.”

Now while the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them this question: “What do you think of the Messiah? Whose son is he?” They said to him, “The son of David.” He said to them, “How is it then that David by the Spirit calls him Lord, saying,

‘The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at my right hand, until I put your enemies under your feet”’?

If David thus calls him Lord, how can he be his son?” No one was able to give him an answer, nor from that day did anyone dare to ask him any more questions.

Please stand and affirm our faith in the words of the Apostles’ Creed.

The Apostles' Creed

I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth; I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

IntheNiceneCreed,Christiansaffirmtheirbeliefin“thecommunionofsaints.”This refers to all of us who are in Christ, who belong to him, are bound together in him, whether we are in our earthly life or our heavenly one. This great theological truth is celebrated every year on All Saints’ Day, which is always on November 1.

One of the ways we observe this day is by listing the deceased in a list called the Necrology.Wewillhavetwonecrologies.Thefirstwilllistallthenamesofallourloved ones (church members or not) who have died in the year since the last All Saints’ Day (November 1, 2019, through October 31, 2020). This list will be read aloud in our worship services on November 1. While we have the names of church members who have died in the last year, if you have a loved one you would like on the list, please contact us. The second necrology lists all the names of deceased loved ones who died at any time in the past. These names will be listed in our worship bulletin on November 1. To submit names for the necrology, please email [email protected] or call the church office by October 29.
