THE LESSONSAll may be seated.

Zechariah 9:9-12

Rejoice greatly, O daughter Zion!Shout aloud, O daughter Jerusalem!

Lo, your king comes to you;triumphant and victorious is he,

humble and riding on a donkey,on a colt, the foal of a donkey.

He will cut off the chariot from Ephraimand the war horse from Jerusalem;

and the battle bow shall be cut off,and he shall command peace to the nations;

his dominion shall be from sea to sea,and from the River to the ends of the earth.

As for you also, because of the blood of my covenant with you,I will set your prisoners free from the waterless pit.

Return to your stronghold, O prisoners of hope;today I declare that I will restore to you double.

“I will extend peace to her like a river,the wealth of nations like an overflowing stream.“You shall nurse and be carried on her arm,and you shall nestle in her lap.

“As a mother comforts her child, so will I comfort you; *you shall be comforted in Jerusalem.

Romans 7:15-25a

I do not understand my own actions. For I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate.Now if I do what I do not want, I agree that the law is good. But in fact it is no longer I that do it,but sin that dwells within me. For I know that nothing good dwells within me, that is, in my flesh. Ican will what is right, but I cannot do it. For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not wantis what I do. Now if I do what I do not want, it is no longer I that do it, but sin that dwells withinme.

So I find it to be a law that when I want to do what is good, evil lies close at hand. For I delightin the law of God in my inmost self, but I see in my members another law at war with the law ofmy mind, making me captive to the law of sin that dwells in my members. Wretched man that Iam! Who will rescue me from this body of death? Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ ourLord!

Canticle 10 A Song of Our Adoption Ephesians 1:3-10 EOW

Officiant: Let us offer the Canticle in unison.All: Seek the Lord while he wills to be found; *

call upon him when he draws near.Let the wicked forsake their ways *

and the evil ones their thoughts;And let them turn to the Lord, and he will have compassion, *

and to our God, for he will richly pardon.For my thoughts are not your thoughts, *

nor your ways my ways, says the Lord.For as the heavens are higher than the earth, *

so are my ways higher than your ways,and my thoughts than your thoughts.

For as rain and snow fall from the heavens * and return not again, but water the earth,

Bringing forth life and giving growth, *seed for sowing and bread for eating,

So is my word that goes forth from my mouth; *it will not return to me empty;

But it will accomplish that which I have purposed, *and prosper in that for which I sent it.Glory to the Father, and to the Son,

and to the Holy Spirit: *as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen

The Reading from the Holy Gospel (Standing) Matthew 11:16-19, 25-30

Deacon: The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to St. Matthew. People: Glory to you, Lord Christ.

Jesus said to the crowd, “To what will I compare this generation? It is like children sitting inthe marketplaces and calling to one another,

‘We played the flute for you, and you did not dance;we wailed, and you did not mourn.’

For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, ‘He has a demon’; the Son of Mancame eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Look, a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectorsand sinners!’ Yet wisdom is vindicated by her deeds.”

At that time Jesus said, “I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you havehidden these things from the wise and the intelligent and have revealed them to infants; yes,Father, for such was your gracious will. All things have been handed over to me by my Father; andno one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and anyoneto whom the Son chooses to reveal him.

“Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will findrest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”

Deacon: The Gospel of the Lord.People: Praise to you, Lord Christ.

Sermon The Rev. Kimberly MeineckeSilence for reflection and meditation.

The Apostles’ Creed (Standing, read in unison) BCP 96

I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead.I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen

The First Reading

Jesus’ prayer/sermon in 11:25-30 identifies those who are most likely to be attuned to God’swork in the world, the “babies” rather than the “wise and understanding” (11:25). Jesus mocksthose who claim for themselves wisdom and intelligence -- most immediately the leaders and eliteswho oppose Jesus, but really those of any age or generation whose “wisdom” blinds them to whatGod is really doing.

God’s revelation comes instead to the "infants" (or “simpleminded,” “stupid”), whosevulnerability and humility make it possible for them both to see and to respond faithfully to God’spresence and power. What does it mean to take Jesus’ yoke and to learn from him (11:29)? Jesus’Sermon on the Mount offers the best answer: those who are blessed neither accept this world as theway things must be nor return in kind the violence they endure at the hands of the powerful.

We are most likely to experience God’s presence and power in the company of the humble andvulnerable, the people who are usually found at the margins of our congregations. They may bechildren or strangers, people who are not sure whether or how they fit. They may be poets orartists, who are trained to look at the world differently. Whoever they might be in any givencongregation, they will always be people who see what others do not, and thus help the rest of usdeal with our blinding arrogance and entitlement. They may be people whose lives challenge theideals over which we argue and divide.

The empire of heaven, after all, is not an ideal, but a reality made known through real acts andexperiences of judgment, repentance, and redemption. The church that banishes the marginal, thevulnerable, and the humiliated does not prevent itself from being subject to the judgment of God;to the contrary, it is precisely through their eyes and voices that we can most clearly discern God’sjudgment and mercy, through which our ongoing repentance is made possible. Judgment is a toolGod uses to open our eyes and ears, to draw us toward repentance -- not to induce brokenness butto uncover and heal what is broken.

The Second Reading

We do not hear the soft voice, the gentle voice, the merciful and feminine.We do not hear mercy, or yielding love, or non-resistance, or non-reprisal.In her there are no reasons and no answers.Yet she is the candor of God's light, the expression of God's simplicity.

Lay Leader: Let us affirm our faith.All: We believe in Jesus Christ, Son of the One God, Maker and sustainer of earth, sea,

and sky. Born of Mary’s womb, faithful to the God of Abraham and Sarah, Jesushealed the sick, served the poor, and proclaimed heaven on earth. Condemned bythe religious, crucified by the state, he died but transformed even death and roseto life everlasting. He blessed the disciples with his Holy Spirit and sent themforth, east and west, north and south. We commit ourselves to Jesus, to oneanother as brothers and sisters, and to his mission in the world in the grace of theHoly Spirit. Amen
