Braybrooke 100 years ago

Before the 1st World War Edwin Cowley farmedat Braybrooke Lower Lodge but he had previouslyserved in the Boar War when he had attained therank of sergeant. He was also a very goodhorseman and regularly hunted so when warbroke out in 1914 he joined the king Edward'sHorse at the age of 43. He enlisted as a trooper but was soon given a commission as a SecondLieutenant and had been fighting with his unit inFrance since May 1915. On the morning of 23rd September 1915 Lieut.Cowley was wounded while helping to make asandbag shelter in a trench. The bullet struck himon the top of the left shoulder and exited aboutthe middle of his ribs. The Midland Mail carried adetailed account of the incident from a letter sentby Lieut-Col. Montagu Craddock, whocommanded the King Edward's Horse, to Edwin'ssister. Craddock wrote "He is one of my bestofficers and has been extraordinarily useful to meout here. He is my wiring officer, which thoughnot quite what you would expect a hunting man tobe, carries most important duties with it. He canmove his left arm and the doctor who dressed himcould not find any trace of a broken bone andthough if the direction of the bullet had been afraction different it would have been a very badcase indeed, there is no reason to doubt that hewill very quickly get over it".Edwin Cowley made a full recovery and returnedto Braybrooke after the war. He played aprominent part in village life until he wasmurdered in 1932 at the age of 61. There is amemorial window to the Cowley family inBraybrooke Church.

Braybrooke Cricket Club

At the time of writing, one game to play and we have had amost enjoyable season. Playing 22, winning 6, losing 9 with 7cancelled and not because of inclement weather! Gameshave had to be called off because ourselves or the oppositioncould simply not raise eleven players.

Over three decades ago, what was there to do on a Sunday?Church in the morning and cricket in the afternoon? Thesedays, we have a multitude of options and the fielding of a fullcricket team is suffering because of this. Also fathers seemmore involved in bringing up the children than they were a fewdecades ago, quality time can be spent with the children onSundays. Again years ago Sunday was a rest day. Many nowwork on a Sunday, again affecting the fielding of a cricketteam. I envisage the problem will only get bigger. As Churchillsaid “keep buggering on”!

On Friday 6 November the Club holds its Annual Dinner andPresentation Evening at the Bulls Head, Arthingworth. If anyVice-Presidents or indeed any other villagers would like to beincluded, it’s a spanking evening, the food is quality and it isonly £20 per head. Please contact Chris Tyrell on 07766318639.

Mid December the Club will hold its annual Bingo and Raffle,in the Village Hall, date to be confirmed. The Club’s AGM, willbe held late January 2016, again date to be confirmed.

From Gill Mitchell

The Village Hall has picked up several bookings from Harborough and Desborough through that website.Such bookings are really important, as they mean that the hall hire fee for all village organisations and villagers' private bookings can be retained at the (unchanged for 7 years) £6.00 an hour fee.

Brookside

We were able to sit in the garden, a lovely summer’s day. We hadanother surprise BBQ. The residents rolled out their wheels, someeven had a little dance as it was a certain person’s birthday. Ourraffle realized £23. Many thanks to everyone.

What's happening at number 16 School Lane?

Earlier this summer archaeologists put three trenches acrossthe site of the proposed development in the paddock behindNo. 16 School Lane. They found several cobbled areas andditches associated with earlier occupation of the site. Workhas now started on the development and the Archaeologistsfrom Preconstruct Archaeology Central Office, who arebased in Cambridge, were back to continue investigating thesite. Further ditches and cobbled areas have been found, one with a concentration of animal bones, which have beensent off for further investigation. The archaeologist's initialthoughts are that the area was occupied by back yards andcloses behind dwellings where animals would have beenkept. The small amount of finds, mainly pot, suggest a dateof late medieval or post medieval times.

Here is the plan, submitted in 2012:
