The 20 th October hosts the Open and Junior meeting at Bellville and the first Collison event takes place on Tuesday 23 rd October in Blue Downs. Race Walking is also preparing to host the SA Race Walking Championships on the 13 th October at Youngsfield Military base. This is the second year in a row that WPA hosts this event. The WP Cross Country team participated at the National Championships in KZN with the Masters and Juniors performing much better than our senior athletes. The performance of our Senior athletes remains a major concern and we trust that we will be able to improve the performances of these athletes during the 2013 season. EditorEditorEditorEditorialialialial With the start of Spring, we have experienced some beautiful days in the Western Cape, especially

welcoming the early sunrises and latter sunsets which allow us to fit in more training time. Although

the calendar indicates that we are close to October, which is the most beautiful month, we are still

firmly in the grip of the winter. Over the past few events we have experienced all seasons within one

    weekend.

All clubs and their members must be congratulated for participating in the Cape Town Marathon

and related events. The marathon witnessed an increase in entries to well over 2100, this is indicative

of the need of Cape Town to host a Marathon distance event. We have seen an increase in

numbers over the past few years, especially in local running clubs and we must invest in this event.

The 10 km as an alternative distance to the main event has also shown a huge increase in numbers

which received well over 2500 entries. Emphasis must be made on the number of temp runners that

are participating in the shorter distances, they have lots of passion and are eager runners, clubs must

tap into this market to strengthen their club runner base.

Saturday 22 September events started with the 5 x 4.2km Relays, with well over 250 participants and

the Fun Run on the Saturday afternoon that had a field of close to 1600 young and old runners and

walkers participating. The clubs that assisted with the marshaling and water tables must be

commended on their efforts and spirit.

The October calendar offers many different events, starting with the very popular Wednesday

evening 10km events, which definitely brings back excitement to the Road Running Calendar. The

other event that is always extremely popular is the Gun Run that attracts a huge number of

    participants.

Track and Field also starts their season during October and we wish all the athletes a positive

preseason in preparation for the 2012/13 events.

You can look forward to the following upcoming events:

The Clive Truter Masters 1 starts on the 6th October at Parow, followed by a Pentathlon and Open

meeting on Saturday the 13th October at Bellville. The 20th October hosts the Open and Junior

meeting at Bellville and the first Collison event takes place on Tuesday 23rd October in Blue Downs.

Race Walking is also preparing to host the SA Race Walking Championships on the 13th October at

Youngsfield Military base. This is the second year in a row that WPA hosts this event.

The WP Cross Country team participated at the National Championships in KZN with the Masters and

Juniors performing much better than our senior athletes. The performance of our Senior athletes

remains a major concern and we trust that we will be able to improve the performances of these

    athletes during the 2013 season.

With the start of last quarter of 2012, we trust that all members will experience an injury free season

and achieve the goals you have set yourselves.

  • The upcoming AGM takes place on Tuesday 9 October, up for discussion are entry fees for events

and license fees, which need to be determined. We look forward to seeing you all there. In general

WPA is progressing well and will end the year on a high note.

The last of the WPA Race Walking Grand Prix’s for 2012 was successfully held at Youngsfield on 8

September in perfect conditions despite the rainy season we have found ourselves immersed in. A

total of 88 athletes took part in the various races which included a 20km, 10km, 5km as well as a 3km

and 1km for the young up-and-coming development athletes.

Ross McDonald (Spartan Harriers) and Cindy Lange (New Balance MSC) took gold in the 20km, Wally

Hart and Cobie Miller (both from Spartan Harriers) took gold in the 10km, while the 10km Junior race

was won by Emmanuel Mlalandle (Spartan Harriers) and Sune Fincham (Maties) and the 10km Youth

race was won by Malakhiwe Poni (Spartan Harriers) and Nomsa Melamane (WC Sport School).

It was so encouraging to see the development of race walking as an Olympic sport, almost half of

the field consisted of our talented youth. Ongama Maki won the 1km race in 06:20 while Lisa Mayiya

was the first young lady in the distance in a time of 06:38. Both of these young athletes are from

Masiphumelele and both are only 10 years old.

The Under 14 year athletes competed over the 3km distance which

saw Chadley Isaacs (Spartan Harriers) 20:07; and Thami Tomose

(Masiphumelele) 21:36 walking away with first male and first female,

    both only 11 years old.

Finally the 5km race was won by Lunga Saunders (WC Sport

School) in a fantastic time of 28:11 and Thabisa Nyangwani

(Masiphumelele) the first young lady in a time of 36:31. Both of these

    winners are 15 years old.

The WPARWC looks forward to seeing the growth of race-walking

through these young athletes and we look forward to seeing

everybody at the Grand Prix’s in 2013. On that note, thank you to all

the Officials, athletes and supporters for making our Race Walking

    Grand Prix’s a great success.

    53rd Don Lock Memorial 8km & 5km Road Race

Celtic Harriers is pleased to present the 53rd running of the Don Lock Memorial 8km & 5km road race

on Sunday, 28 October 2012. This year’s race was due to have been run on 19 August, but was

postponed to 28 October to avoid clashing with Eid this year.

The Don Lock race was started in 1960 to commemorate the death of our club member who was

    killed in a road accident.

The start will be in Lansdowne Road in front of Brookside (Villager’s Rugby Club). The 8km starts at

07h30 and the 5km Fun Run at 07h45. The route is the traditional fast and flat “5 miler”, and runs past

Rondebosch Common. The finish will be on the Villager’s “B” field.

Whilst the Don Lock has historically attracted some extremely impressive athletes, Celtic Harriers is

keen to encourage runners of all ages, skill and experience to participate in either event.

The list of past winners of the Don Lock reads like a "Who’s Who" in WP middle-distance athletics. Of

the men: Willie Olivier (who won the first nine races), Ferdie la Grange, Danie Malan, De Villiers

Lamprecht, Julian Marsay, Greg Liefeldt, Peter Williams, Marius-Hugo Schlechter, John September,

Makhosonke Fika and Lindikhaya Mthangayi. The ladies list is no less impressive: Judy Ryan, Isavel

Roche-Kelly, Janet Grieve, Elana van Zyl, Monica Drogemoller, Jenifer Bam, Juliet Prowse, Esme

Solomons, Nolene Conrad and Thuliswa Nonkonyana, amongst others.

We encourage you to join us and run in the footsteps of these great athletes. The women’s course

record is held by Elana Meyer at 25min 35secs, and the men’s record of 22min 51sec is held by John

    September.

We hope to see you there!

    STRAND ATHLETIC CLUB

Vineyard Forest Run: 7 November 2012

The Vineyard Forest Run, scheduled for 7 November 2012, presented by the Strand Athletics Club,

    has been cancelled.

This is due to roadworks taking place at the venue which makes the venue and most of the route

    inaccesable.

The Race Committee has approached two other venues, to step in, but we could not confirm the

proposed new route with the necessary authorities in time.

Therefore we have no other alternative but to cancel the race this year.

  • SANLAM ROAD RUNNING CLUB

An enveloping three-tiered effort was launched at the Sanlam Road Running Club this year to

enhance communication between members. As part of this Communication Improvement

Endeavour, the club's Management Team was introduced to the members in a unique continuous

fashion - in the form of a team photo in every edition of the club's weekly e-newsletter at the end:

The photo reflects the names, portfolios and telephone numbers of each Management Team

member. Club members are therefore constantly informed about the responsibilities of every team

member and know whom to contact with specific issues.

Another Communication Improvement Endeavour is to publish the full minutes of the Management

Team meetings in the newsletter. Since February, the team had three such meetings and by

publishing the minutes the club members, they stayed informed about everything discussed.

The third communication reformation effort is to welcome every new member to the club by means

of a personal e-message. The new member is informed about the Management Team members and

    their duties.

Club members announced their satisfaction with this communication effectuation. They say they

appreciate being informed continuously. The Sanlam Club will gladly assist other clubs with such

    communication efforts.

    • The popular Sanlam Niel Joubert Plaaswedloop takes place on Wednesday 28 November 2012. Prepare yourself for a unique running experience! More information to follow.

kids who returned with 4 medals: 1Gold (Sipho Simela) and 3

Silvers (Anitha Nonene, Sesethu Kulati and Yamkela
