A Dark Day in America

On September 24, the House of Representa+ves voted to pass what Archbishop Naumann

called “the most extreme proabor on bill our na on has ever seen". You can read his

statementhere. The socalledWomen’s Health Protec on Actwould:

Allowabor on on demand na onwidethroughoutevery stage of pregnancy

Banprolife lawsin every state and local government

ForceAmericans to support abor onswith their tax dollars

Likelyeliminate conscience protec onsfor doctors.

All but one House Democrat voted for the bill and all House Republicans voted against.

You cancontactyour Representa+ve today either to thank her (if you live on Staten Island)

for vo+ng against H.R. 3755 or to express strong, but respec=ul, disagreement with their

vote for the bill while urging him/her to reconsider support for this radical bill.

Please alsocontactour Senators to strongly urge their opposi+on to the Senate version of

this bill (S. 1975) when it comes up for a vote. It is not expected to gain a sufficient majori-

ty to pass in the Senate, but we should not take any chances with such a dangerous bill.

Hope to overturn Roe v Wade

Pray for Dobbs

The Women's Health Protec+on Act is a sign of the unease among the proabor+on forces

with the recent prolife victories in Texas and upcoming Dobbs vs Jackson decision at the

US Supreme Court which will determine whether or not a law banning abor+on aEer 15

weeks in Mississippi will stand.

This decision could poten ally overturnRoe v Wade and Planned Parenthood vs Casey

and increase protec on for the unborn in the United States.

Oral arguments in the case have been scheduled for December 1,

2021 and a decision is expected by June 2022. For an excellent analysis of

the case, see Ed Mechmann's blogpost.

This is a cri+cal moment in the prolife movement, and we must respond with prayer,

fas+ng, and witness. Please stay tuned for more informa+on about a dedicated campaign

of prayer and fas+ng for the Supreme Court during the coming months as we await the

outcome of the momentous decision.

MINISTRY Opportunies

Important event Begun by Pope Francis

This past week, Pope Francis officially launched a 2year program

aimed at “listening to the Church” which he hopes will eventually

set a vision for the future and allow Catholics to come together to

share ideas, frustra ons and hopes for the future of our world-

wide Church. Referred to as “the Synodal path”, this type of gath-

ering is a new, bold endeavor, typical of a man who wants to lis-

ten to the concerns and hopes of the family of God throughout

the world.

In the opening Mass on October 10, the Pope urged the global

Catholic Church to master the "art of encounter." "Everything

changes once we are capable of genuine encounters with [Jesus]

and with one another, without formalism or pretense, but simply

as we are," said Francis in a homily in St. Peter's Basilica.

The Synod of Bishops, which emerged out of the Second Va can

Council, was designed in part to provide a mechanism for global

church leaders to come to Rome to confront certain challenges in

church life. Now this newly retooled model adds another compo-

nent that begins with a listening stage with local churches at the

diocesan level. (We’ll soon be ge8ng word from the Albany Dio-

cese how this process will be begin in our own diocese.)

In inaugura ng the new process, the pope said the Chris an com-

munity must reflect the "style of God, who travels the paths of

history and shares in the life of humanity."This is a " me to look

others in the eye and listen to what they have to say, to build

rapport, to be sensi ve to the ques ons of our sisters and broth-

ers," Francis said. The "art of encounter," said Francis, is marked

by listening and seeking to understand the other."Every encoun-

ter, as we know, calls for openness, courage and a willingness to

let ourselves be challenged by the presence and the stories of

others," the pope said.

Catholics in every corner of the world have been asked to pray for

the success of this newtype of church gathering. The following

prayer has been suggested for our use. Won’t you join Catholics

throughout the world who are pu8ng into the hands of the Holy

Spirit this exci ng new venture:

We stand before You, Holy Spirit, as we gather together in

Your name. With You alone to guide us, make Yourself at

home in our hearts; Teach us the way we must go and how

we are to pursue it. We are weak and sinful; do not let us

promote disorder. Do not let ignorance lead us down the

wrong path nor par ality influence our ac ons. Let us find in

You our unity and strength so that we may journey together

to eternal life and not stray from the way of truth and what is

right. All this we ask of You, who are at work in every place

and me, in the communion of the Father and the Son,

forever and ever. Amen.
