On 11 March 2020, we were faced with

some big decisions. Full lockdown was

imminently around the corner and like

so many small companies, we asked

ourselves; what next and what does this

mean for our business? These questions

were nearly impossible to answer and so

we turned to two things; our core values

and what we could see and what we

could control.

And so it began, one week at a time

providing wellbeing sessions through a

virtual medium wrapped in our core

values; connection, accessibility and

social responsibility.

For some it was a lifeline and that was

enough for us to keep going.

At a time like this, sessions such as

today's just help to make the world

feel less scary and more manageable.

Knowing we are in it together and

still connecting just helps.

The campaign ran over 7 weeks, from

16 March to 01 May, with 76 sessions

delivered in total. Fifteen of our

service partners unselfishly gave

their time and expertise to make this

happen.

Stay Ahead of Stress

74% of the UK population has

experienced negative stress in the

last year to the point that they

identified as being "overwhelmed

and unable to cope". This statistic

was before COVID-19.

Unsurprisingly de-stressing was the

number one reason for joining the

wellbeing sessions. In addition, 20% were

trying something new and 6% unsure

indicating that people were being open-

minded and willing to try new things.

Many commented on the impact

sessions had on them individually;

reducing stress, finding more calm

and focus, creating routine, feeling

connected and part of a wider

community and learning new

coping tools used outside of

sessions to name just a few.

There is a growing body of research around the wide range of wellbeing tools on offer; from

yoga, meditation and mindfulness to breahwork, bathing in sound, singing, creative therapies

and more.

But there is still a wide array of skepticism out there. And the best way to shift perspectives is

to keep the door open and invite people in to experience things for themselves.

Your Comfort Zone

Where theMagic Happens

People are willing to try new things,

explore their wellbeing and step out of

their comfort zones now more than

ever.

74% of those who joined in had either

never tried that type of wellbeing activity

before or had only tried it once or twice.

There is a real measured increase all over

the world in the use of alternative

wellbeing approaches.

From 2012 to 2017, US adults using yoga

for wellbeing increased from 9.1% to

14.3% and meditation more than tripled

rising from 4.1% to 14.2%.

In the UK, Bupa estimates Meditation to

be Britain's most popular wellbeing

therapy, with over 1/4 of UK adults

having tried Meditation.

Measuring Wellbeing

Ability to Manage Stress

In addition to Health in the moment, 5

key wellbeing factors are measured.

Combined they are used as a general

indicator of workplace wellbeing.

Stress impacts our wellbeing on every level;

physical, mental and emotional and is one

of the lead indicators for overall wellbeing.

1

Ability to Make Decisions

Ability to make decisions is an indicator of

agency, a balanced emotional state,

rationality and ultimately efficacy.

2

Ability to Build &Maintain HealthyRelationships

Relational ability is key both in and out of

work. We are all social beings wired to

connect.

3

Ability to Focus &Engage in the WorldAround You

When we are well, we are able to focus and

feel engaged in the world around us. These

are both crucial in the workplace.

4 Self-Awareness

Half the battle towards improving our

wellbeing starts with an awareness of

where we are in the current moment.

5

Factors were selected after interviews with

Wellbeing leads exploring their workplace

wellbeing measures as well as a review of

various wellbeing research papers. 4, 5, 6

Stress was the number one motivator

for joining sessions. Of the 5 wellbeing

factors considered it also saw the most

improvement, including a steady rise

over time.

A steady improvement was observed

over the duration of sessions, with

average post session scores of 7.0 in

week one rising up to 8.2 by week 7.
