From the bottom of my heart, thank you for all of the kind words, gestures and congratulations I received after being permanently appointed as Principal of Oatlands Public School. I am thrilled to be working with the Oatlands community well into the future. It was lovely to see so many families at our recent Athletics Carnival and we look forward to hosting the ribbon and trophy assembly soon for our 3-6 students. I would like to again acknowledge the tremendous efforts of Mrs Harley and the staff in organising this special day for our students. Whilst it will be very sad not to see the wonderful Mrs Harley at school each day, we wish her the very best in this new chapter of her life and look forward to seeing her again when she returns from her maternity leave. Mrs Harley is an outstanding teacher who always goes above and beyond for her students and their families. I would like to welcome Miss May to the Oatlands Public School family. Miss May is a passionate and empathetic educator who is looking forward to taking on the responsibility of teaching 5/6 Dandelion. I encourage everybody who is able to come and visit us during Open Day next Wednesday 7 August. This year the theme for Education Day is ‘Every Student, Every Voice’. We are very excited about this theme as we have been working very hard in the las year and a half to promote student voice at Oatlands Public School, particularly through our Kids Curriculum program and our Kids Parliament. There will also be books for sale at our Book Fair and coffee for sale before school between 8.30am -11am. Kind regards, Miss Gould Principal

Oatlands Public School Week 2, Term 3 2019

Term 3 Week 2 What is mindfulness?

Mindfulness means moment-to-moment awareness of one’s experience, without judgment.

It’s a state of being, rather than a trait. Rooted in Eastern traditions, this non-judgmental awareness encourages us to slow down, focus on the present and accept things as they are.

When we do this, we’re less distracted by thoughts of the future and the past, which can often make us worry and stop us from enjoying the present moment.

Mindfulness is very simple

It’s a practical way to notice thoughts, physical sensations, sights, sounds, smells or anything that you might not normally notice. Despite this simplicity, it doesn’t come easily to us.

You’ve probably noticed that children and young people are much better at being mindful. While we might be hurrying them to get to school on time, they’ll stop to look at butterflies, flowers or bugs and be immersed in that moment, with no worries about the past or future. As adults, however, we’re often thinking about what we need to do next or what we wish we’d done differently.

Mindfulness takes practice

It’s about learning to control where our attention lies, rather than allowing it to be dominated by concerns which take us away from experiencing the present moment. It allows us to stay open, curious and flexible about the moment that we’re in.

What are the benefits?

Clinically proven tool to support your wellbeing and mental health

It can help you feel calmer, bring clarity and enhance your creativity and awareness. Research has found many other benefits, including:

• reduced rumination (continuously thinking about upsetting situations and things) • reduced stress, anxiety and depression • improved focus and working memory (being able to recall and use relevant information) • improved immune function (resistance to disease) • increased self-awareness, social awareness and self-confidence.

A Message from Mrs Harley

After teaching at Oatlands Public School for almost 9 years, I am very excited to start the next chapter in my life by becoming a mum!

A huge thank you to the students, staff and families that I have worked with over the years and for making it such a great place to come to work each day.

Thank you all for your well wishes and gifts. I intend to return to work after 12 months maternity leave and look forward to working with the OPS community again soon!

Athletics Carnival

On Monday 30th July all students went to Barton Park for the Athletics Carnival. Students participated in 100m, 200m and 800m races. The carnival also included high jump, long jump, shot put and discus. All the students had an excellent time. Congratulations to all of the students who qualify for zone. Thank you to all the teachers and parents who helped and thank you to all the coaches from Dance Fever Multi Sports.
