As I am writing this article by the time you read it I am

hoping that summer has arrived! And whatever you are doing or going away on holiday you will have a great break.

In September St Mary Oatlands will start a new course on a Monday evening on the 16th September. The course will be looking at the book of Daniel chapters 1-7 and will be run by Myself, Lynne and Brian Brown our occasional preacher. Running alongside this we will run a 7-week sermon series on Daniel starting from the 22nd September at the 8am and 10am service.

Our hope is that we can immerse our-selves in this interesting Old Testament book and learn something that will help us on our own walk of faith. Sign up sheets will be ready in August.

I would also like to congratulate Sue Met-calf on her induction into the Pastoral assistant ministry on the 3rd of July. Sue

has worked really hard for this and we wish her all blessings in this new phase of ministry.

In May this year Malcolm Jeffries spoke to the church about stewardship of finances time and talents. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those who responded, however there is still a gap both in regular giving and a number

of situations vacant. I hope that 2013 will see St Mary Oatlands branch out into some new ministry with Open the Book and a new family friendly ser-vice on a Sunday. These ventures need people to join in and get involved so please do speak to either Lynne or myself if you would like to get involved.

Please also consider sowing financially into

the ministry here at SMO new initiatives and moving out into the community can only be possible if we pay the bills and there is still a gap to fill in our finances to move forward.Once again have a great summer and be refreshed ready for the challenges ahead.

Letter from Steve

Report from Deanery Synod

On June 6th, the Emly Dean-ery Synod, which covers the

parishes in the region from Wey-bridge to Hinchley Wood, met for one of its quarterly meeting. The Deanery Synod is attended by clergy and elected lay members from each parish; there are 13 parishes in Emly. The subject for discussion was the new leadership in our Diocese caused by the promotion of Archdeacon Julian to be Bishop of Blackburn in September and the retirement of Bishop Christo-pher this year. The complex and slow methodology (especially for the Bishop) of appointing new people to these posi-tions was described. This process does not involve the active seeking of input from parishioners or parishes. However, it was felt that this synod was a good opportunity to discuss what the parishes felt was important in any new appointee. Our views could be put into a letter or document and the appointment com-mittees would consider it as part of their process.

The Rural dean, Rev. Philip Plyming, and the deanery lay chair, Nick Stuart, led the reflections and discussions and organised it around the discussion of four points:· If you were to visit the Diocese in 5 years time, what three things would you most hope to see?· What are the top 3 challenges facing the Dio-cese of Guildford?· What distinctive contribution could a future

Bishop of Guildford make to leading this diocese going forwards? · What distinctive contribution could a future Archdeacon of Dorking make to leading this archdeaconry going forwards?

The synod was split into 8 or 9 groups of 4-5 people all reflecting on the above points generating views and trying to distil them into the 3 most important to that group. At the end, the ideas were written down on a whiteboard and the leaders tried to distil all these points into the 2-3 points that most could agree re-flected the views of the synod and could be sent to the appointment committees as a representation of the views of the parishes within the Emly Deanery.

These ideas were condensed into:1. If you were to visit the Diocese in 5 years time, what three things would you most hope to see? · churches growing numerically and spiritually across all ages · committed and active members serv-ing their church and community · at least one woman on the senior staff team (i.e. bishop/archdeacon)2. What are the top challenges facing the Dio-cese of Guildford? · nurturing discipleship and commit-ted Christian living in a changing world · resourcing ministry – financially and in terms of personnel3. What distinctive contribution could a future Bishop of Guildford make to lead this Diocese going forwards? · formulating, leading and regularly

Page 12: St Mary Oatlands october 2013

12

articulating their vision and mission for the Diocese · visibly supporting parishes through proactive leadership and putting Dioc-esan business first · drawing on direct parochial expe-rience and listening skills to support clergy4. What distinctive contribution could a future

Archdeacon of Dorking make to lead this Arch-deaconry going forwards? · have a mission focus · encourage parishes to share best practice · working pastorally to support clergyMike Williams, Ann Blowers and Rev. Lynne Bowden attended from St. Mary Oatlands

Centenary of St Mary Oatlands’ Bells

This cake was commissioned by the Oatlands Village Society and displayed at the Oatlands Village Fair. Afterwards, the cake was donated to Meeting Point. The eight bells of St Mary’s were origi-nally intended for the Durbar in Delhi in 1911, to celebrate the coronation of King George V as Emperor of In-dia. Prior to this they were exhibited at the Festival of Empire at the Crystal Palace and it was here that the Vicar of St Mary’s, together with a group of parishioners, saw and heard the bells. The Vicar (the Rev. John Townsend MA, 1887-1915) came to an agreement with the bell founder, John Warner, of first refusal if the bells should become avail-able.

For reasons now unknown the bells did not go to India. They were used in a spectacular performance of Max Rein-

hart’s “the Miracle” at Olympia in 1912, after which Mr Warner honoured the agreement and the bells came to Oat-lands. Since then they have rung regu-larly except during the Second World War when church bells would have sig-nified a German invasion, if it had come.

They rang again in May 1945 to celebrate Victory in Europe.

In March 2013 a band of ringers from the Guild-ford Diocesan Guild rang a full peal over some 3 hours to mark the centenary of the hanging of the bells in 1913.

SEPTEMBER MEETING POINT

Wednesday 25th September – Meeting Point in Church Hall – 12.30 pmOne of the volunteers from the HER-SHAM GREYHOUND TRUST will come to Meeting Point to tell us about the work of this local charity. We hope they will bring along a sleek, healthy greyhound to give us a close-up view of one of these fine, highly-strung animals, that need a caring home as they are often abandoned when their racing days are over.

NOTESDo join us at our Meetings – starting about 12.30 am in the Church Hall with a light lunch and the chance to chat. There follows a Thought for the Day, the calendar of forthcoming events and then our speaker, who gives a 40 minute talk. The meeting concludes at 2.30 pm. Lifts are available – and we always appreciate volun-teers to offer lifts to and from the hall or to help in the kitchen.

Please can you help? We need extra help from people who are willing to join the Baptism Pastoral Team. If you are willing to join in this vital job and help us it is not a large commitment. The more people who come forward the less we will ask you to do. I am sure that this would involve, at worst, only a few hours a month at a time to suit you. You will be trained. Please speak to a member of the clergy or to me after any Sunday service to find out more.

Thank you so much Martin Hussey

In addition to new choristers I also need some musicians with a view to playing some of the hymns for the non Eucharis-

tic informal communion service on the second Sunday of the month.

In particular, I would like Flautists, Oboists, string players, Guitars, pianists and percussionists. Players

must be competent to play hymns with a view to playing other music in the service as required. If there are any

adults or children who would like to play their instruments in church occasionally I would love to hear from you.

If you are interested please contact me either after the morning service on a Sunday or telephone 020 8737 1769

Many thanksJonathan Bridger

DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE HYMN?

If so, there will be a sheet of paper kept at the back of the church for you to enter your chosen hymn(s).

It MUST come from our hymn book, so there will be three columns on the sheet for: • the hymn number • the title • and who requested it

As I try to match hymns with the theme for the Sunday and bible readings, your hymn may not appear straight away but so that you know when it will be included in the service, in future I am going to put the music list for the month up at the back of the church.

I look forward to receiving your requests! Jonathan

I don’t know if you realise how much of Surrey is beautiful countryside, with a lot of the land still given over to agriculture.I have a friend in Thursley (down the A3) who has a dairy farm. This is her journal, showing the hard work, pain and pleasure of being close to the land.

What is happening on the farm this month?

What a month, it has been extremely busy but we have achieved a huge amount.

Having caught up a bit with getting the maize in, the wonderful weather upset it all again. It started raining again; however it gave us chance to get everything ready for silaging. Mower blades changed, the clamp washed and swept, even the workshop has had a tidy up. The contractors were booked, every-one raring to go, but it kept raining, it is so frustrating and it doesn’t matter how often you watch the weather forecast it generally changes immediately after turning off the television.

Then it stopped raining and the sun came out, so all systems go. The mowing started Friday morning, then the rowing up started, contrac-tors arrived Saturday and all done and dusted with the sheeting up done Sunday morning. Considering that grass growing had a very late start this year, when the weather started to warm late April early May, the grass went mad. So the clamp is looking the most full in about three years. The contractors machine can measure how many tons it has picked up, but another guide is, when we put the sheets on we then cover it in old tyres, all of last

year’s tyres were used but more were required, which we had to take from the extras pile, (very accurate measuring!!)

The maize has taken a while to come up, and when it did it was looking very yellow, that’s due to too much rain, but then we had those lovely summer days (which I hope you enjoyed because that was probably summer) and the maize loves sunshine. It did it the power of good, it grew and greened up.

The bulls have gone out with the sucklers cows. Each bull gets about 30 cows with the exception of the old bull, he is sharing the work with his son, a bull I have bred; they have a group of about 20 cows each. It gives the young one a gentle start and the old one a bit of an easier time too. In about a weeks’ time we will swap the bulls round to a differ-ent groups of cows, a change is as good as a rest as they say. It keeps the bulls interested in serving as they can sometimes get lazy.

I have been scanning the late served dairy cows, of which there are about 40. This is to see which are in calf, but will calve too late for our system. These can be sold to another dairy farm who wants them to calve after November. Usually we don’t sell them for another month, but having spoken to several dairy farmers in the area they are doing the

Page 37: St Mary Oatlands october 2013

37

same so we thought we would sell now before we miss the boat, and get a lessor price by selling with everyone else.

In about two weeks’ time we will start drying off the early calving dairy cows, this will give them the 6 week break the need before we start over again. In preparation for calving we have treated ourselves to some new calf penning. The pens previously were made using wooden hurdles which we have had for some number of years but they have seen better days. If you step on a rail to climb into the pen it usually bends or breaks, the nuts and bolts which hold the rails in place seem to make a beeline for your leg, giving you some great bruises and tears in your trousers, and the calves have to be lifted over the top, char-acter building pens!. Now though we have some nice shiny ones, they will be easier to clean and being metal won’t harbor bugs, and the fronts can be opened to get calves in and out. The stockman’s Christmas present has come early, he is very happy.

Other jobs have been weed control, which have gone mad, so spraying and strimming along field boundaries have kept us busy. Cleaning out water tanks, repairing fences, and general tidying, a good spring clean re-ally.

Surrey county show was good, for the boys they achieved a second and third in the very strong young handler’s class. My day wasn’t so good, having bathed my bull every day for three days leading up to the show, and he

remained white after his baths, lots of walking and standing practice. I walked him down the yard to the trailer and he was lame, he managed to get a small cut at the back of the hoof which was then irritated by the straw he slept on that night. So he had to stay at home, and I had to twiddle my thumbs at the show as helping the boys was a big no no, they are

very direct in telling me that my help is not required.

Matthew and Toby were then asked to do some stock judging for Cranleigh Young farmers at the South of England show, where Matthew won the sheep judging classes for the South east. Our next destination is

Birmingham NEC for the Charolais stock judging finals and two days after that in Stafford is the finals for member of the year for Young Farmers. We are certainly getting around the country.

Once again I am being dragged around the villages by two Springer Spaniels, as I have been training to do the British 10k run on July 14th in London. I am doing it in aid of RABI (Royal Agriculture Benevolent Insti-tute) who help farmers for various reasons including farming families left behind from bereavement, farmers struggling from illness or recovery from accidents. Last year I raised over £700 with your help and would love to do that or more again. So if you would like to help too, you can donate on www.justgiving.com/joranson1
