DESCRIPTION

Milapfest’s Arts School is a weekly programme of courses offered at The Cornerstone Building of Liverpool Hope University. There are currently six programmes on offer, many of which are offered in a variety of levels, or are segregated classes for either adults or children. The Artschool is open to students of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities. The programme runs in Partnership with Liverpool Hope University at The Cornerstone Building of the Creative Campus of Liverpool Hope University.

Sitar & Indian Music for Any InstrumentTaught by Gaurav Mazumdar

Sitar 11:00-12:00

The sitar classes at Arts School give students the unique opportunity of training with Gaurav Mazumdar, a highly acclaimed world-class musician and student of Pandit Ravi Shankar. Training occurs in small groups with special one-to-one sessions taking place at least once each term.

Any Instrument 12:00-13:00

The Indian Music for Any Instrument classes offer students the opportunity to learn the theory and technique of Indian Music on any instrument, making this one of the most accessible and affordable ways of learning instrumental Indian music. These classes also act well as an in depth introduction to Indian Music before taking the step of purchasing an Indian musical instrument, such as the sitar.

Kathak Taught by Aditi Sen

Beginners 10:00-11:00 Intermediate 11:00-12:00 Advanced 12:00-13:00

There are three levels of Kathak classes available. Training focuses on theory, aspects of abhniaya (facial expression and emotion) and nritta (dance / movement technique). The beautiful North Indian dance form of Kathak is taught by Aditi Sen. She is a prominent dancer of the present generation in the realm of North Indian Classical Dance in India as well as abroad.

TablaTaught by Kousic Sen

U16s 10:00-11:00 Adults 11:00-12:00

Training occurs in small groups, giving each student an opportunity to receive focused one-to-one training with Kousic Sen during each class, and both practical and theoretical aspects of Tabla are covered in this class. Milapfest has 3 sets of Tabla which can be rented for training and practice. Kousic is a vastly experienced tabla artist, and a master of accompanying dance, fusion and classical music.

Bharatanatyam IntermediateISTD Grade 2 & 3 Taught by Swati RautGrade 2 10:00-11:00 Grade 3 11:00-12:00

The Arts School currently offers ISTD accredited training in grades 2 and 3. Classes for ISTD level Bharatanatyam are taught by leading dance artist Swati Raut. She is on the board for DIGM (Dance Initiative Greater Manchester), is Director of her own repertory company, Swati Dance Company, and is an ISTD faculty member..

Carnatic Vocal & Violin (South Indian style)Taught by Madhu Tanjorkar

Carnatic Vocal U16s 11:00-12:00 Adults 12:00-13:00

Carnatic Vocal is an extremely popular art form learnt in India, particularly in the South. This class introduces students to the concepts of Raga and Tala – the basic fundamental training needed to learn any form of Indian classical music. Students will also learn about different patterns, rhythms and compositions used in Carnatic music. The class is taught by musician Madhu Tanjorkar, a talented vocalist and violinist who is expert in both Carnatic and Hindustani music.

Violin TBC

The Violin, much like Carnatic vocal, is played widely throughout South India. The use of the Violin in Indian music differs from its Western application in both technique and standard tuning, producing an entirely different sound. This class will also introduce the concepts of Raga and Tala, rhythmic patterns and compositions.

Bharatanatyam BeginnersTaught by Devika Rao

Adults 11:00-12:00 U16s 12:00-13:00

Bharatanatyam is one of the oldest and most beautiful forms of dance in the world. In this class, students learn the basics of Bharatanatyam (adavus), in preparation for ISTD level training. The class is led by Devika Rao, and through creative exercises and lessons, students learn nritta (dance technique) and abhinaya (facial expression and emotion).. This class offers students the option to take the ISTD Grade 1 examination.

Term Dates All courses, with the exception of Sitar and Indian Music for Any Instrument, run for a course of 11 classes from Saturday 19 January to Saturday 13 April 2013.

FeesA course of 11 classes in the following subjects is £90. A discounted fee for early payment is available at £70 for full payment received on or before Saturday 19 January 2013.*
