Hi NUDM Dancers,

From all of us here at Starlight Children’s Foundation - Thank you and wow! You are amazing.

Over the next few months as you fundraise your way to weekend of, we wanted to let you know that we are here and honored to be a part of this incredible event. We also wanted to share a few words of encouragement and some fundraising tips.

First things first – we are just going to say it: fundraising can be challenging and a bit intimidating, right? In fact it can be uncomfortable and even awkward at times. Don’t worry, you’re not alone in thinking that. But remember, it is also extremely rewarding. This is your chance to make a real difference, and when you finish that 30 hours of dancing, you will know that you made the commitment to change lives and that you did it. So try this - instead of worrying about not being able to raise the money or that everyone you ask will say no, focus on getting that first gift. That first yes is addicting and will make you want to keep asking! You may ask 25 people to make a donation and you may get 24 no’s before you get a yes. That’s totally normal. So forget about any no’s, go get that first donation and then don’t stop loving the feeling each time you get another one. The most important fundraising “rule“ is JUST ASK. It’s as simple as that. By not asking for the donation, you are denying that individual the opportunity to make a positive impact on the life of a child.

Second, there are a lot of creative ways to ask for donations – make it fun and make it personal. We found if you can’t meet everyone in person, you can make individual videos and send them via email or video message and include a link to your donation page. This is a chance for your friends and family to see your wonderful face and the look in your eyes when you tell them about what you’re doing; who can say no to that?

Remember, everyone has their own reasons for dancing and everyone has their own reasons for donating, and they won’t always be the same. You’ve signed up, you are ready to do this, and Starlight families are so glad that you did.

Congratulations on being amazing and best of luck over the next few months. Welcome to the Starlight family. We are thrilled to have your support.

Sincerely,

Starlight Children’s Foundation

Fundraising ideasAIRPORT RIDESWhat’s Needed? A car!Individuals can offer to drive friends or people in their dorm to or from the airport. Especially during the holiday season, this is a great chance to help out friends while raising money for a good cause!

BABYSITTINGWhat’s Needed? Your time!Go to jobcat.northwestern.edu, and search for available jobs. Often times, Evanston families with kids will put up dates where they need a nanny or a babysitter. Spend time with kids and donate your profits to NUDM.

#BUY4NUDMWhat’s Needed? Something to sell!Post on Facebook groups, particularly Free & For Sale, to sell a good or service (i.e. your artwork, old clothes, appliances, etc.). Use #BUY4NUDM to promote where the money will go!

CANNINGWhat’s Needed? A can & bib!Canning is a great way to raise money while spreading awareness about the Starlight Children’s Foundation and the Evanston Community Foundation. On specially approved days & locations, students can ask for donations in various local cities/suburbs and at Ryan field while wearing an NUDM canning bib and using a special can.

CHANGE JARWhat’s Needed? A jar and spare change!Set up a jar by the entrance of your house, dorm room, or apartment and drop your spare change in there everytime you leave or come home. Once the jar is full, take it to the bank and donate the money to NUDM.

CLEAN SOMEONE’S APARTMENTWhat’s Needed? Cleaning supplies! No one likes to clean, so paying someone to do it for charity is very appealing. Offer to clean your friends’ apartments, or part of their apartment, and collect an hourly fee.

CONCESSIONS STANDWhat’s Needed? Your time!Concession stands can have as few as 2 people up to 20 people. Additionally, if you would like a bigger concession stand, you can combine forces with another small organization so that we can give you a bigger stand for the season. All members must stay till the end of the game. Everyone

must be in FULL uniform including shirt, hat and name tag. Your group receives 9% of the sales from your stand. There may be an option to have a donation jar as well.contact people: James Kerrigan - [email protected] Ballard - [email protected]

POST EMBARRASSING PICTURESWhat’s Needed? Your time and bravery! For every $x amount donation, pledge to post to social media an embarrassing photo of yourself. These can be shameless bathroom selfies from middle school, or pictures from that time your mother dressed you up in a hot pink jumpsuit when you were 11.

GIFT WRAPPINGWhat’s Needed? Your time!NUDM will have days and times where people can sign up to help wrap presents during the holiday season. Any tips gathered during that time can go to an individuals fundraising total!

GIVE UP SOMETHINGWhat’s Needed? Your time and strong willpower!Need coffee everyday? Can’t live without chocolate? Give up your favorite thing for 1 day/week/month and have your friends pledge a certain amount per day. Also, take the money you would have spent and donate it to yourself!

HOLIDAY CARDSWhat’s Needed? Art supplies!Make homemade greeting cards and sell them to your friends and family around the holidays. Sell them for cheaper than the greeting card companies do - plus people love handmade cards! Donate profits to NUDM while spreading holiday cheer.

LIBRARY FOOD SERVICEWhat’s Needed? Your time!Students get tired of ordering in from the same limited restaurants that offer delivery (and many times there are additional delivery costs that make meals too expensive). Students will pay you back for the food and give you a donation for NUDM.

There is often no cost to participate, nor any risk factors associated. All studies are required to detail the purpose of the study, and any potential side effects related. The time commitment can vary from 30 minutes to 3 hours on average, and can be a one time commitment or repeated. Compensation can be anywhere from $10 to $60 on average.

RECYCLEWhat’s Needed? Cans!Live in a state that pays you to recycle? Collect cans over winter break and take them to the local grocery store or wherever you can turn them in for money.

How To Donatecreate a Classy page for Online Donations: Every dancer and committee member must create a Classy page. By using the Classy platform, you can track your progress in real-time and share your page via email and social media with friends and family to help meet your fundraising goals. Personalizing your page with your own text and photos is a great way to get started!

1

Set a Fundraising Goal: You can set a personal fundraising goal when you set up your Classy page. The minimum fundraising goal of $400 is a great start, but many people set an even higher bar! Don’t be afraid to be ambitious; your friends and family will want to help you reach your goal!

3Bring Checks to NUDM OFFICE: To drop off checks, bring the checks to Office E on the 3rd floor of Norris. The best time is during the Finance Co-Chairs’ office hours, found on nudm.org, or during other co-chair office hours. Make sure checks are made payable to Northwestern University with the dancer name on the memo line!

4Bring Cash to SOFO OFfice: To drop off cash donations, bring your donation to the Cashier’s Office on the 1st floor of Norris from 9:00 am - 4:00 pm, Monday through Friday. As we get closer to NUDM, these hours will shift to 9:00am - 1:00pm.
