BTPS was conceived in 1965 to meet thegrowing electricity demand of Northern

    Region.The site construction activities started in1968.The plant became operational with thecommissioning of its first unit on 26th July1973, 2nd unit in ;74 , 3rd unit in 75 , 4th unitin 78 & 5th unit in 81.

Basic PrincipleThere are basically three main units of a thermal power plant:

    1. Steam Generator or Boiler

    2. Steam Turbine

    3. Electric Generator

A generating station which converts heat energy of coal combustion intoelectrical energy is known as a steam power station. Steam is produced in the boiler by utilizing the heat of coal combustion. Thesteam is then expanded in the steam turbine and is condensed in acondenser to be fed into the boiler again. The steam turbine drives thealternator which converts mechanical energy of the turbine into electricalenergy.

Coal is burnt in a boiler ,which converts water into steam.

The steam is expanded in a turbine used todrive alternator. The steam expanded is condensed in acondenser to be feed into the boiler again.

The steam turbine drives the alternator whichconverts mechanical energy of the turbine intoelectrical energy.

A device which removes last traces of moisture.

It helps in reduction in requirement of steam quantity. Steam being dry reduces the mechanical

resistance of turbine. No corrosion at the turbine blades.

Remove heat from thewater discharged fromthe condenser so that the

water can be dischargedto the river or recirculated and reused.

Air can be circulated inthe cooling towersthrough natural draft andmechanical draft.

A natural result from the burning of fossil fuels, particularlycoal, is the emission of flyash. Ash is mineral matter present inthe fuel. For a pulverized coal unit, 60-80% of ash leaves withthe flue gas.

Two emission control devices for flyash are the fabric filtersand electrostatic precipitators.

Electrostatic precipitators have collection efficiency of 99%, butdo not work well for flyash with a high electrical resistivity (ascommonly results from combustion of low-sulfur coal). Inaddition, the designer must avoid allowing unburned gas toenter the electrostatic precipitator since the gas could beignited.
