Dear Readers Welcome to this edition of the Tradewinds Newsletter November is the official month that we begin processing membership renewals Your options for renewing are on our website by mail and in office We certainly appreciate it if you come in early to renew When we only had 400 members having a big stack of renewals in January wasnrsquot that difficult Now that wersquore in the 1200 range spacing it out makes it much easier on us Cost will remain the same $15 for single and $25 per couple Please consider re-ceiving a digital copy rather than printed The costs to print and mail it have gone up quite a bit Now that we have so many more members allowing us to email it saves thousands of dollars each year At the end of September the fundraising committee thatrsquos acquiring the money to build the new OASIS Center held a site tour for potential lead donors Unfortunately the weather didnrsquot cooperate so we had to meet elsewhere The point though is that this fundraising campaign is well under way It is a $4 million dollar project of which a good sized amount has already been secured The actual site is difficult to navigate at this time Itrsquos mostly loose sand with gopher holes everywhere The plan is to get it ready for an open house tour for the membership next spring I will keep you posted through the newsletter and email notifications Did any of you see Joni Gray talking about our project on the local news She is co-chair of our campaign and the official media spokesperson Get used to seeing hearing and reading about our project Itrsquos pretty big news in the community And Joni is the perfect person to lead the charge Speaking of Joni shersquos written another media release This time itrsquos on ldquoDurable Pow-ers of Attorney Critical Documentsrdquo She said it was okay to share it with you Itrsquos too long to fit in this newsletter but it will be attached as a separate document to those that receive the Tradewinds by email We can also print a copy if you donrsquot have email There is vital information about documents you should have with you at all times in case of an accident or emergency Donrsquot be caught off guard Finally the OASIS Board of Directors is down to its minimum number of nine members The Board wants to remind the membership that you are always invited to participate If you are considering a position on the Board please contact President Rick Velasco at rickandmartyverizonnet and let him know It is an active group that governs the organization More important yoursquoll get to be my boss The Board meetings are held on the second Thursday of every month at 9am in the Rostien Room A very Happy Veteranrsquos Day and Thanksgiving to you all

Seven Safety Tips for Senior Travelers
By IndependentTravelercom You donrsquot have to stop traveling just because yoursquore getting older If any-thing itrsquos when you are older that travel means more a lifetime of knowledge allows you to fully appreciate the new experiences yoursquore having And if not for travel what did you work so hard for all those years But being older does often mean that you canrsquot travel the way you used to Wersquore not talking about upgrading from a hostel to a proper hotel What wersquore referring to are physical limitations you might need to work around as well as the fact that as an older individual yoursquove suddenly become numero uno on a thiefrsquos hit list Fortunately there are steps you can take to protect yourself and your belongings Independent Travelercom reached out to two experts on boomer and senior travel for advice on what older travelers can do to stay safe while away from home 1 Get Insurance - While travel insurance is important for people of any
age it truly is essential for older travelers who are more at risk of falling and hurting themselves getting sick or needing extra medication if their travel is interrupted or delayed
2 Donrsquot Advertise Your Absence - Donrsquot put the ldquoclean my roomrdquo sign on your hotel door Ask for a room near the elevator (more foot traffic will deter thieves) and stay away from ground floor rooms
3 Watch What You Eat - Older folks tend to have more sensitive tum-mies and are frequently on restricted diets Yoursquoll probably want to keep the heavy spicy or cheesy items to a minimum
4 Mind Your Meds - Donrsquot pack your medications in checked luggage donrsquot leave them lying in the open in your hotel room and always make sure yoursquove got enough to last you an extra day or two
5 Keep the Bling to a Minimum - carrying items like nice jewelry gold watches and fancy cameras makes you a target for thieves especially as many nersquoer-do-wells believe - rightly or wrongly - that older travelers are less aware of their surroundings more unsteady on their feet and basically all around easier targets
6 Keep Others in the Loop - If yoursquore going to be traveling solo AARP recommends that you keep others apprised of your daily itinerary in-cluding your innkeeper or hotel concierge Tell them where yoursquore go-ing and when you expect to be back then stick to your schedule Keep a cell phone with you at all times
