Thirteen-time Professional Bowlers
Association Tour champion Tommy
Jones of Simpsonville, S.C., survived
three tension-filled matches to win the
$45,000 jackpot in the winner-take-all
BowlersDeals.com All-In Showdown
at South Point Bowling Center.
Jones defeated four-time PBA Tour
titlist Sean Rash of Montgomery, Ill.,
446-426, in the two-game final match.
After Jones got off to a 245-214 lead
after the first game, Rash made a run in
the second game defeating Jones 212-
201. Needing a double in the 10th
frame, Rash left a solid nine pin on thefirst ball and couldnt erase the 31-pin
deficit.
As a prelude to the PBA World
Series of Bowling, All-In Showdown
entrants Jones, Rash, Chris Barnes, Bill
ONeill, Chris Warren, Brian Himmler,
Ronnie Russell and Joe Paluszek eachput up $5,000 in the elimination-style
special event streamed live on
pba.coms Xtra Frame which also paid
a $5,000 bonus provided by event
sponsor BowlersDeals.com.
For the first two matches your
mindset is to survive to the next round
but that changes when you get to the
final match, and then it turns to do what
you have to win, said the 2005-06
PBA Player of the Year. There was a
lot of money on the line here but
believe it or not my mindset is to just
win whether its a format like this or a
PBA final."
The All-In Showdown consisted of
three two-game matches with the top
four from the first round advancing to
the second round and the top two from
the second round advancing to the title
match. In the first round Jones (494), Rash
(485), Russell, (483) and Barnes (448)

SEATTLE, Wash. The constantly changing climate in the
world of professional sports has prompted the Professional
Bowlers Association to return to a competitive environment
that will re-open the doors to its national tour to all aspiring pro-
fessional bowlers.
Changes in competition rules, announced to the PBA mem-
bership at the start of the PBA World Series of Bowling, will
mean the end of the exempt tour concept the PBA has
employed since the 2004-05 season and a return to a non-
exempt Tour program for the 2012-13 season.
Over the past few years the definition of an PBA Exempt
Tour player has changed fairly dramatically, said PBA
Commissioner Tom Clark. For the current season, the number
of exempt players was reduced from an original field of 57 to
49 with only two events (Carmen Salvino Classic and the Pepsi
PBA Elite Players Championship) that fit the traditionalExempt Tour model.
With the goal of setting the PBA on a new trajectory, fol-
lowing discussions with many players and industry leaders, the
PBA is announcing a rules change that eliminates the Exempt
Player designation beginning next season. All tournaments dur-
ing the 2012-13 season will be open to all players as most of
them have been the past two years with the PBA Tournament
of Champions and the new PBA Elite Players Championship
being the exceptions.
While competing to earn Exempt Player status is no longer
an incentive, earning a high position in the PBA competition
points list during the 2011-12 season will still be extremely
important. Competition points will determine which players are
eligible for the season-ending Dick Weber PBA Playoffs and
will also be a major factor in determining the field for the PBA
Elite Players Championship, which will consist of players who
have won major titles in the two most recent seasons plus play-
ers who rank high on the previous seasons points list to round
out an exclusive field of 36.
We have changed the name of this year's Pepsi PBA Exempt
Players Championship which will be part of the PBA World
Series of Bowling currently underway in Las Vegas to reflect
the changes. The event will now be named the Pepsi PBA Elite
Players Championship, launching a new Elite Players
Championship tradition, Clark said, and every player in the
Pepsi PBA Elite Players Championship will cash.
In conjunction with the rules changes, the PBA will revive the
former Touring 1 and Touring 2 classifications which identified
players by the number of events they entered. Those classifica-
tions will include specific membership benefits and exposure
similar to the Exempt Tour model.Touring 1 status will be earned by players who bowl 80 per-
cent of the PBA Tour events, including the World Series of
Bowling, two additional majors and three Xtra Frame Tour
events. Touring 2 status will be earned by those who bowl 60
percent of the Tour schedule including the World Series, one
major and one Xtra Frame Tour event. Players also must main-
tain a minimum average of 190 in PBA Tour competition to
retain their eligibility for the following season.
We hope the rule change concerning the dissolution of the
Exempt Player designation and continued focus on the value of
the PBA Tour point list will give more opportunities for players
to grow as top PBA players and remove any confusion over
what being exempt entails, Clark concluded. While elite sta-
tus may be awarded to fewer players, the rewards for achieving
that status will have greater value than it has in the past.

Tournaments, tournaments,
tournaments
Bowling wouldn't be the same
without them. They can be the
sweet icing on the bowling
cake. Each year there are some
10,000 tournaments, give or
take a few hundred. They offer
prizes ranging from tiny tro-
phies to $200,000 or more ifyou roll the right game in the
right place at the right time.
Tournaments can go in dis-
tance from a single ball to as
many games as you can roll in
many days. They are conducted
at any and all hours and there
probably isn't any time of the
year, any year, when a bowling
tournament isnt being con-
ducted in this rapidly shrink-
ing world.
Why should you bowl in a
tournament?
If you enjoy bowling, you are
competitive to a degree. Leaguebowling is more competitive
than open bowling and tourna-
ments are just another exten-
sion into another field of com-
petition.
If you look at tournament
bowling as a way to quick rich-
es, forget it. Sure, there are
winners, big winners. But look
at the prize ratios, one winner
for so many entries, meaning
for every winner there must be
multiple losers.
But thats talking money.
There's plenty of experience,
satisfaction and competitive
fun in tournaments, rewards
not as obvious as money. Only
your check book can tell you
what you can afford in the way
of tournament play.
Once it tells you how far you
can go or how near you must
stay, the next step is to check
out what is available. That
information is usually as close
as your nearest bowling center
or bowling publication, and
often your mailbox brings you
news of the tournament goodies
available near and far.
There is a tournament for
you, no matter your age, size, sex, average or what. The good
tournament promoters verge
on genius. You can win money,
cars, trips, merchandise of all
sorts, notice, and even glory.
A word of caution. Most tour-
naments are well conducted,
and a boost to al tournaments
is to gain the help of the United
States Bowling Congress sanc-
tion to insure the integrity ofthe events.
But there are many grabbers,
interested in themselves first,
and one of their chief delights
is to con people. And bowlers
are people, and they can be
conned, simply because they
dont take the time to read,
count or add.
Check the entry blanks close-
ly and read all the fine print.
Seek out the breakdown of the
entry fee. Part of the fee pays
for bowling, some for scoring
and supervising, and it is neces-
sary that a fair amount becharged for the many other
expenses. And this is all fine,
within reason.
Be wary of too much being
taken from the total entry fee,
or too little. Always remember
with the exception of some spe-
cialized commercially spon-
sored tournaments, you are not
going to get something for
nothing.
So, if you are paying, get the
most for your money. It is not
as difficult as you might think.
The same way a housewife
shops for groceries and other
needs, a bowler should shop for
tournaments.
A bowler, any bowler, who
doesn't compete in tourna-
ments, is missing a good part of
the sport. Every bowler should
go out of his way to support his
local and state association
events.
If you haven't been bowling
in tournaments, toss away all
the excuses, and give a couple a
try. If you have been, you don't
have to be sold the benefits,
only the cautions.
As they say at most events, good luck and good bowling.

ARLINGTON, Texas - The East Coast Bowling Centers
Convention (ECBCC) proved once again to be the premier
regional trade show in the bowling industry. The annual
meeting of bowling centers owners, managers and industry
professionals was held on Atlantic City's famous boardwalk
at Trump's Taj Mahal October 10 - 12, 2011, and despite a
weak economy, officials say attendance was up 5 percent
and the trade show welcomed 28 new companies on the
exhibit floor.
"Even in a soft economy that has affected all businesses,
including bowling centers, it was very encouraging to see
more proprietors at the convention this year as well as new
exhibitors." said ECBCC committee chair Jack Moran ofRoseland Bowl in Canandaigua, N.Y. "There were also
many positive comments about our educational sessions and
the new topics added this year."
Over 27 states were represented among the convention
goers who participated in variety of workshops and seminars
on topics such as raising customer service standards, selling
to the corporate client, family entertainment in the bowling
center, packaging your center to attract more customers, new
league formats and the tools to market them, effectively
using social media plus coaching clinics, ball manufacturer
demonstrations and an idea exchange on everything that
drives traffic into your center.
Keynote speaker Jim Snack brought his message, "The
Magic of Teams: Working Together For The Fun Of It!" to
the Monday luncheon, sponsored by Brunswick Bowling &
Billiards who, along with Budweiser, sponsored the Monday
evening welcome reception which featured entertainment
from The Bowling Music Network.
Tuesday morning's breakfast keynote message, sponsored
by Kids Bowl Free, was presented by Bruce Davis whose
topic was titled, "If They Love Us So Much, Why Don't
They Do It More Often?" QubicaAMF sponsored Tuesday's
luncheon keynote by Rich Benzer and Georganne Kizer who
talked about taking your business off auto pilot. During the
luncheon, the Metropolitan Bowling Writer's honored Pro
Bowler Carolyn Dorin-Ballard with the Bill Landgraf Awardfor Excellence. The scribes also honored Leeanne Barrette
Hulsenberg and Ron Mohr as National Bowlers Bowers of
the Year, and Kelly Kulick and Bill O'Neill, Metropolitan
Bowlers of the Year. Ruth Bouie received a special service
award for her years of service to local bowling.
At the Wednesday State of the Industry breakfast attendees
heard industry updates from BPAA Executive Director Steve
Johnson, USBC Executive Director Stu Upson and
International Bowling Museum and Hall of Fame President
Keith Hamilton and past President Pat Ciniello.
Tuesday and Wednesday afternoon were reserved for the
trade show where attendees had a chance to visit with
exhibitors, vendors and others in the industry to see and talk
about the latest innovations in the bowling business. The
highlight of the convention was a portable bowling lane
donated by John LaSpina and Maple Family Centers, N.Y.,
which became a centerpiece of the trade show. The lane pro-
vided the first-ever Charity Challenge bowling match with
PBA Hall of Famer Norm Duke. Proceeds were divided
equally between the International Bowling Museum and
Hall of Fame, Bowl for the Cure and Bowling to Veterans
Link.
The convention ended Wednesday evening with a banquet
and the "Party at the Taj" featuring Apollo Robbins - "The
Gentleman Thief," who literally stole the show.
