Last year, Saline was the

high school swimming and div-ing capital of Michigan. TheHornets captured both girlsand boys Division 1 swimmingand diving state championshipslast season.

This year, the Saline girlssquad is looking for a repeatperformance of 2009. TheHornets are aiming for back-to-back state titles and appear tohave the roster to pull it off.

With 19 state qualifiersreturning from last yearschampionship team, Salinewill be among the favoritesonce again to raise the Division1 state title hardware inNovember.

The Division 1 state meet isNov. 19 through 20 at OaklandUniversity.

We only lost one scoringswimmer off of last yearsteam, said Saline coach ToddBrunty, beginning his fourthseason on the deck. We returnalmost everyone.

Thats good news for fans ofHornet swimming and diving-- bad news for the rest of thestate. Last year, Saline finishedranked No. 4 in the nation. Thisseason, the Hornets want evenmore.

We want to improve on ournational standing, Brunty said.Plus, the girls want to raise

Defense not only wins champi-onships, it also wins season open-ing games. Just ask Saline coachMike Glennie.

Defense was the key tonight,said Glennie. They kept us in theballgame.

Behind its hard-hitting, sure-tackling defense, Saline defeatedvisiting Belleville 17-14 Fridaynight in front of a packed homecrowd at Hornet Stadium.

The Tigers (0-1), out ofthe Western Wayne AthleticConference trailed 17-7 at half-time. In the second half, Bellevillecontrolled the football holding theball for the first nine minutes ofthe third quarter.

They (Belleville) had the ball itseemed like the entire third quar-ter, Glennie said. Our defensehad their backs against the wall.I think that showed the characterof the kids. They did a good jobfor Week 1.

In the entire second half, Saline(1-0) had only two possessions, not

including the final two minutes

of the game where the Hornetsbasically took a knee to run outthe clock.

The Tigers, on the other hand,opened the third quarter with aseven-play drive that was stalledwhen Saline sophomore defensivetackle Casey Schukow (6-foot, 240pounds) sacked Belleville juniorquarterback Brendon Temple onthird and long deep in Tiger terri-tory. Belleville punted, but recov-ered the ball after Saline muffedthe return.

Ten plays and 42 yards later,

Temple hit senior receiverJacques Reeves (5-10, 155) on a 7-

yard slant pass for a touchdown.With junior Scott Powells pointafter touchdown kick, the Tigerstrimmed Salines lead to 17-14with 3:28 remaining in the thirdquarter.

Belleville, however, would gono closer as the Hornets defenseclamped down on the speedyTigers forcing a punt and a turn-over on downs to end the game.

Penalties killed us, saidBelleville first-year coach MattDavenport. Were not that goodon offense to have penalties. Our

kids played hard, though. Weregoing to get better. I thought we

came out in the second half andwe really focused and moveddown the field. We were in thegame all the way. We really preachto the kids that we need to be asecond half team. I thought wewere tonight.

To begin the contest, bothteams battled to a 0-0 first quarter

draw.As it would be the entire

game, the defenses on both sidesdominated. On Salines secondpossession of the game, Bellevillejunior defensive back RemingtonBurton intercepted a pass deepin the Tigers own zone. On thevery next play from scrimmage,the Hornets defense came up bigsacking Temple on Bellevillesfirst pass attempt of the contestcausing a fumble. Senior defen-sive lineman Dylan Burrows (5-11,225) pounced on the loose ballgiving Saline possession at theTigers 15-yard line.

Six plays later, Hornet seniorquarterback Trey Heren (6-3, 205)scored on a sneak from one-yardout for the seasons first touch-
