PROJECT STATUS In the summer of 2013, Valley Metro initiated a Project Definition study as the next stage of the planning process for Northwest Extension Phase II. The Project Definition effort will determine if a connection across I-17 to Metrocenter Mall is feasible. The study will also include further definition of key project elements, including station locations, traffic configuration, park-and-ride size and location, new pedestrian and bicycle access points and initial evaluation of possible future light rail extensions. For more information, please contact Megan Casey, Community Outreach Coordinator at 602.495.8274 /cell 602.622.3677 or [email protected]. Additional information can be found at valleymetro.org/northwest2. To receive information in alternative formats, call 602.262.7433 / TTY 602.251.2039. PROJECT UPDATE OCTOBER 2013 11-5-13 NEXT STEPS Valley Metro will continue to study Northwest Extension Phase II through summer 2014 with several opportunities for community input. After evaluating technical and community considerations, Valley Metro will provide recommendations on alignment, station location and other project elements for the Northwest Extension Phase II study area. These recommendations will be submitted to the city of Phoenix and regional transportation agencies for approval. RELATED STUDIES I-17 Concept Evaluation In tandem with Valley Metro planning efforts, the city of Phoenix is evaluating a future multi- modal bridge that will include vehicle, light rail, bike and pedestrian access, as well as Direct High Occupancy Vehicle (DHOV) access ramps across I-17 between Dunlap Avenue and Peoria Avenue. This evaluation is consistent with Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) and Maricopa Association of Governments (MAG) plans to improve the I-17 corridor. Phoenix is studying the location and configuration of the bridge, crossing opportunities and impact of DHOV ramps to the Metrocenter area. Evaluation criteria include freeway ramp access and operations, right-of-way impacts, utility considerations and connectivity with Metrocenter. Metrocenter Development Evaluation As part of the recent designation of the North Mountain Redevelopment Area, the city of Phoenix is preparing a plan to guide future development of the Metrocenter area properties. A study is underway to identify an economic development program to enhance the area. Recommendations will include strategies to identify local and regional programs to increase neighborhood engagement and reduce blight, and outline how planned transportation improvements can enhance development of the Metrocenter area. 17 43rd Ave Dunlap Ave 19th Ave 35th Ave 67th A 7th Ave Peoria Ave Central Ave Metrocenter PHOENIX 2026 2026 2016 2016 Park-and-Ride Transit Center LEGEND N Northwest Light Rail Extension Phase I Northwest Light Rail Extension Phase II Northwest Metrocenter Alternative Valley Metro Light Rail Station Note: Dates indicate anticipated calendar year openings NORTHWEST LIGHT RAIL EXTENSION PHASE II BACKGROUND In 2004, the Phoenix City Council approved the route for the Northwest Light Rail Extension. NORTHWEST LIGHT RAIL EXTENSION PHASE II

BACKGROUNDIn 2004, the Phoenix City Council approved the route for the Northwest Light Rail Extension. The route included 4.6 miles of additional light rail service, extending from the current end-of-line at 19th Avenue and Montebello Avenue to Mountain View Road and 25th Avenue. In 2007, the route was divided into two phases. The 3.2-mile Phase I on 19th Avenue from Montebello Avenue to Dunlap Avenue is currently under construction and is scheduled to open in late 2016. Phase II of the project will extend west on Dunlap Avenue, then north on 25th Avenue to Mountain View Road. The current approved route terminates on Mountain View Road just east of the Interstate 17 (I-17) freeway. Phase II is scheduled to open in 2026.
