Last year the Friends of Millfield raised money to replace part of the Jungle Gym that became no longer fit for purpose. This year they are driving forwards with more fundraising for new equipment. The School Council were part of the working group who helped select the new piece of equipment, which has now been installed. The Hammock Net and upgrade of the safety surface, which was needed, has cost £7000, £3000 of which was raised by the Friends from the generosity of the friends, parents and staff of the school. They need to raise more funds to carry on replacing items of equipment. Although the equipment has served the school well providing hours of fun and helping develop the children’s physical fitness, after 20 years many pieces need upgrading! The Friends have organised a Craft/Gift and Pamper Fayre at North Walsham Community Centre on Thursday 8 November starting at 7pm. All ticket sales will be going towards the next piece of equipment. There will be lots on offer including massage, reflexology, handmade crafts and gifts plus loads more, not forgetting plenty of delicious cake! Members of the public who attend the meetingwill be given a rundown of local crime and polic-ing issues – including any crime trends, crimeprevention advice and on-going initiatives.

The first meeting is on Wednesday 12 December between 7-8pm at the Atrium in the grounds of North Walsham High School. At-tendees will get the chance to raise concerns andinfluence the three priorities that will be taken onby the panel.

This meeting will be the first time in two yearsthat the meetings have been open to the public.Panel members, which include representativesfrom local councils and organisations, will con-

tinue to attend the meetings.

North Walsham Beat manager Charlotte Reedsaid: “It’s hoped that these meetings will be atwo-way exchange of information. As well as in-forming local people about what is going on intheir area, we want to hear from them about theirconcerns and what we can do to solve them. Byre-opening these meetings up to the public we areaiming to get a more balanced and representativeselection of priorities”.

The current priorities, which will be up for discussion at the next meeting, were decided at a meeting on 3 October. They are:

North Walsham Social Centre for the Blindhas been very busy lately, enjoying life to the full. What a wonderful club this is -every month there is something different going on and oh, how our members enjoythemselves. This month’s meeting was held at the Community Centre on Thursday 4October and there to entertain us was the singing duo " The Squeegees " who sang amedley of songs from the 50s/60s, also a few oldies for us to sing along to. Theywere brilliant which means they will get the call again card!We would like to thank Cynthia Clare for baking our beautiful birthday cake - theclub is now celebrating its 67th year. We cannot thank our members enough for allthe support that they give to the club each month by bringing small raffle prizes andsecond hand clothing, and a special thanks goes to Stephanie and Kath who raisedover £300 for the club on a two day charity event on the tombola stall. Septemberwas a great month for the club as well with an additional visit to the Cromer PierShow, attended by 38 members who all enjoyed it very much. Our raffle this monthcashed in at £60 and the second hand clothes stall raised £16.50. It was very nice tosee some new faces at the club this month, but there is always room for a few more -we meet the first Thursday of every month at the Community Centre at 2pm.

Head Chef Nathan Boon brings younews from The White Horse Overstrand

North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) hasbeen recognised for keeping its communitiesvery tidy and been handed a five star award forthe cleanliness of the district.

NNDC’s efforts to keep the district clean haveearned the award in the 2012 Clean BritainAwards.

Anonymous inspections assessed 13 key criteria, including general litter, chewing gumand smoking-related litter, fly-tipping, graffitiand the provision and condition of litter bins.North Norfolk was inspected in August, at theheight of the holiday season.

Areas inspected included Fakenham town centre, high school and college and WellsRoad; Holt High Street and Country Park;Sheringham High Street, sea front and trainstation; Cromer sea front, promenade andCromwell Road; and North Walsham HighStreet and Market Place.

Comments in the official Clean Britain Awardsreport included:

“Holt could hardly be faulted with near perfectscores in the town centre and a perfect 100% inHolt Country Park with the latter receivingglowing praise from the judges.”

“Cromer promenade was amazing given thehigh volume of people there in high season. The litter bin provision to cope with the additional footfall was excellent.”

The area round Sheringham Station was said to be “only small but nonetheless, an extremelyclean, pleasant and tidy entrance to the town”. While North Walsham was praised for its “nice tidy town centre”, and Fakenham was described as “an extremely well kept and tidytown”.

John Lee, NNDC’s Cabinet Member for Environmental Services, Tourism, Leisure andCultural Services, said, “Great efforts are madein North Norfolk to keep the environmentclean and tidy for both visitors and people wholive here.“We are very pleased to receive five stars, but

equally it is important to maintain our effortsand ensure standards remain very high.

“We can always do even better and will aim todo so in the future.”

The awards are run by the Chartered Institutionof Wastes Management (CIWM) in associationwith the British Cleaning Council and are opento all local authorities and other organisationsinvolved in managing public spaces.

Steve Lee, chief executive of CIWM, said,“Our communities deserve well maintainedand attractive public places and the CleanBritain Awards recognise and reward the efforts made by councils and other organisations to keep our local areas clean and welcoming.

“The quality of our local environment contributes directly to our sense of wellbeingand civic pride and plays an important role inimproving the economic prosperity of ourtowns, cities and rural districts.”

North Norfolk praised for cleanlinessand given five star award

Last time, we mentioned the little cat that was missing but had not beenchipped. Unfortunately the person who was thought to have taken hersaid this was not the case and she appears to have disappeared withouttrace. As she was a pedigree cat we believe she has been stolen and herowner deeply regrets not having her chipped.

Talking to other branches of Cats Protection on a Cat Forum it is apparent that the situation regarding stray and unwanted cats is the worstwe have experienced as a charity. However, compared to some areas ofthe country we are quite fortunate. Although we have a waiting list forcats to come in, we do not have to limit this to stray cats and can, giventime, take those that are in a home at present, but for whatever reasonneed to find a new one. The general consensus also indicates that fewerpeople are coming forward to offer cats and kittens new homes. Perhapssome are under the misapprehension that we charge a lot of money, butthis is not the case. Looking at the ‘dreaded’ websites we see cats andkittens being offered for far more money and without the health checks, vaccinations and routine treatments ours have all received. Others arebeing sensible and considering the costs they could incur owning a petshould it become ill or have an accident and maybe deciding that they

can only afford one where in the past they might have given a home totwo. These are worrying times but we will continue to help as many catsand kittens as we can.

Earlier this year we launched a “Free Neutering” campaign and severalvets in the area agreed to participate. Although this was intended forthose who were having difficulty in paying for the operation and to prevent more litters of unwanted kittens, we know that people who couldafford to pay took advantage of the offer. The offer has now closed andapproximately £12,000 of branch funds have been spent on this. Because Stephanie receives so many calls about neutering it has beendecided to set up a special phone line to take these calls. If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat in future please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible) and not Stephanie.

If you are looking for a cat or kitten please giveStephanie a call on 01692 535858.

Alternatively you can visit www.cats.org.uk/northwalsham for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number.

When the clocks go back this October, what will you do withthe extra hour? Stay in bed? Fit in an extra gym session?Spend time with family? How about saving a life?

NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) are reminding the public that itonly takes an hour to give blood. With blood in constant demand, newand existing donors are being urged to donate in North Walsham to ensure that sufficient blood is available for patients.

There are many ways that donated blood can save the lives of the sickand injured. Donated blood is used not only in accident and emergencysituations but also for patients undergoing surgery and receiving treatment for cancer and blood diseases, such as leukaemia.

Giving blood can dramatically improve or save the lives of those in needof blood transfusions, in fact a single donation can be broken into threecomponent parts (red cells, plasma and platelets) which means that onedonation can potentially save or improve the lives of up to three people.Derek Carr, Lead Donor Relations Manager for NHSBT, said “As theweather gets colder, people are more likely to stay indoors. We wouldlike to remind people that they only need to spend an hour of their timewith us in order to help save lives. With the increase in the cold and fluthis season, it is vital that those that are able to donate do so, to keepstock levels healthy”.

Anyone aged between 17 - 65, weighing more than 50 kg (7 stone 12lbs)and in general good health could potentially start saving lives by becoming a blood donor. There is no upper age limit for donors whohave donated in the last two years. To book an appointment call theDonor Line on 0300 123 23 23 or visit www.blood.co.uk

Stay SafePeople across the county planning tocelebrate Halloween at the end ofOctober and Bonfire Night in early November are being urged to be consid-erate to others.Norfolk Constabulary officers will be working with residents, partner agen-cies and local businesses aiming to make sure that celebrations are safe andenjoyable for everyone. Additional officers will be on duty for what can beone of the busiest periods of the policing calendar. As in previous years, planning and preparation for this peak time of year is amulti-agency effort including: Norfolk Fire & Rescue Service, NorfolkCounty Council through Trading Standards and the Youth Offending Team,as well as other local authority resources.Inspector Mark Cant said: “We want everyone to have an enjoyable Hal-loween. We understand that trick or treating has become an exciting traditionfor youngsters. However, Halloween can be a distressing time of year forsome vulnerable members of the community and we would ask trick ortreaters to respect the wishes of those who choose not to mark the occasion.“In previous years the event has passed without major incident thanks to theconsideration of trick or treaters for those who didn’t want to take part inHalloween and we hope to see a repeat of that this year.“The same applies for Bonfire Night – we urge everyone to have fun, staysafe and respect residents in their neighbourhood.”Richard Herrell, Group Manager for Community Fire Protection, NorfolkFire and Rescue Service said: “Every year we work with our partners aroundHalloween and Bonfire Night. We hope everyone; retailers, customers andour communities enjoy themselves and have a safe and enjoyable time."Norfolk Community Safety Partnership offers the following safety tips toyoung people who intend to go trick or treating:* Never go trick or treating alone or split up from your friends.* Always check with your parents or carer first.* Only go to houses where you or your friends know who lives there.* Don’t go into any house - stay on the doorstep* Don’t talk to strangers on the street.* Stay in well-lit areas and carry a torch.* Take care when crossing roads - it may be hard to see so well in a costume. * Although Halloween is about looking spooky, be careful not to frighten theelderly.* Eggs & flour make a mess & most shops won’t sell them to under 16s overHalloween.A selection of posters are available for people to display in a window or ontheir front door - dependent on their view of Halloween. One poster wel-comes trick or treaters to the doors of residents while an alternative asks thattrick or treaters do not disturb residents. There is a poster with the messagethat shopkeepers will not be selling eggs or flour to under 16s at the end ofOctober and a leaflet aimed at young people which gives important tips onhow they can stay safe and enjoy Halloween and Bonfire Night. The Partner-ship has prepared an additional poster combining safety messages and con-cerns about anti-social behaviour for both occasions.

Inspector Cant added: “Our Safer Neigh-bourhood Teams have access to the postersand will be out and about in their commu-nities to raise awareness with local resi-

dents and encourage their use. The posters are simple for people to accessand download from our website to print out and put in windows and on doorsfor themselves.”The free posters are available for download at the Norfolk Police website toplace on windows and doors at the end of October. http://www.norfolk.police.uk/newsevents/newsstories/2012/october/respec-tothersthishalloween.aspx

The current Chief Executive of the AmbulanceService Trust, Hayden Newton, has pledged toensure the Trust continues to monitorthe situation in North Walsham following meetings with Act on Ambulances campaigners.

Last month, as the 6500-signature petition was gathering momentum, Act on Ambulances campaigners welcomed a u-turn on some of the cutsto the service in Cromer and NorthWalsham, but said that the plans didnot go far enough.

North Walsham will now see 112hours of the ambulance returned to the town – in addition to the 24/7 rapidresponse vehicle – but there will stillbe losses of 56 ambulance hours aweek due to government cuts.

On 26 September North Norfolk Labour Partycampaigners, who organised the petition, made

the trip to Cambourne in Cambridgeshire tomeet with the Trust to call for more support in

North Walsham.

Since the meeting the Trust has agreedto continue to review performance inthe town on a monthly basis, and sothe Labour Party is urging residents tospeak up about their experiences of theservice.

Baldock-Yaxley then edged outLupton 12-10 in the fifth, before Batchfordwon in four against Lawes. Baldock-Yaxleythen took his first win against Paul 11-9, 9-11,11-13, 11-6, 11-7. Beane beat Lawes in fourand Batchford won in five against Lupton tomove NWSCA 5-1 ahead. Baldock-Yaxleythen completed an impressive maximum withan 11-7, 16-14, 12-14, 4-11, 11-5 win againstLawes. Paul edged out Batchford 12-10 in thefourth and Lupton won the only straight setsgame of the night against Beane. A four setdoubles win for Beane and Baldock-Yaxleyagainst Paul and Lupton that finished at11:40pm completed a key 7-3 win forNWSCA.NWSCB’s Dennis Elliott, Paul Price andSimon Halliday hosted Backhander’s Teucer

Wilson, Rod Goffin and Whil De Neve withElliott taking a maximum in three against DeNeve, in four against Wilson and in fiveagainst Goffin. Sawyer had a set-pointchance at 10-9 in the first set, which was won 12-10 by Johns and perhaps the early exchanges were the key as Sawyer ran out ofsteam at the end of John’s four set win. Sainsbury’s North Walsham customers donate enough food toprovide 1,000 meals to FareShare The Million Meal Appeal has broken records, thanks to generous donations from North Walshamresidents. Across Saturday 6th and Sunday 7th October, customers at Sainsbury’s North Walshamdonated enough food to provide 1,000 meals to help feed vulnerable people affected by foodpoverty in the UK. Sainsbury’s has also once again matched every meal donated by customers, soin total 2,000 meals have been donated by the North Walsham store. The Million Meal Appeal isrun with Sainsbury’s charity partner FareShare, a national charity dedicated to tackling hungerand food waste.

The first Million Meal Appeal was held in 2011 with 600 stores participating. Thanks to customers’ generosity and Sainsbury’s pledge to match meals, 1.2 million meals were donated toFareShare. Due to its success, this year’s appeal was run in over 900 stores. North Walsham wereinvolved in both appeals and a massive two millionmeals have been donated in total this year, which in-cludes matching from Sainsbury’s - that’s double theoriginal target of 1 million meals.

Sainsbury’s Head of Community Affairs, AndyWhite said: “Our customers have been telling us thatthey like giving in this way and it’s really apparentby their generosity despite difficult times. We’re delighted to match all the meals donated by our customers and it means that together we’re helpingto provide two million meals to vulnerable membersof our communities that need it the most.”

FareShare CEO Lindsay Boswell added: “The response to the Million Meal Appeal has been incredible. We’ll be able to combine the donatedpasta, rice and tinned food with the short life surplusmeat, fruit and vegetables that we receive daily fromthe food industry. It will make these surpluses goeven further in a time of real need."

The National Trust is doing its bit to keep one of England’s most important traditional industries alive – thanks to pioneering workbeing carried out at Felbrigg Hall in Norfolk.

In a UK first, Felbrigg is hosting the pilot project for a not-for-profit organisation with a mission to preserve the time-honouredknowledge, skills and technology of England’stextile industry – important aspects of our heritage that face the threat of extinction.

Specialists from the Living Looms Project will be using traditional methodsand machinery to create areplica of a historically important, vibrant Georgian carpet from Felbrigg Hall’sGothic library. The original carpet dates from the 1830s andis now extremely faded andworn. When finished, the replicawill be fitted as a replacementfor the original, bringing the library back to life and giving visitors a taste of the room’s original grandeur.

Samples of the material have already beentaken to the Living Looms Project for detailedanalysis, to discover the carpet’s originalcolours – once thought to be lost forever.“It is very exciting,” said Eleanor Akinlade,

the National Trust’s house manager for Felbrigg Hall. “We’ve found out the originalhad vibrant plum purples, deep shades of greenand impressive blues – completely different tothe faded colours left after nearly 200 years of use and exposure to daylight.”

Results show the carpet is particularly noteworthy as it contains 29 colours in an intricate 3 ft by 3 ft floral design, making it arare surviving example of a Printed Tapestrycarpet.

“It is very important that initiatives like theLiving Looms Project are successful,” addedEleanor. “The National Trust is founded on theprinciple of preserving our country’s heritageand open spaces forever, for everyone. If wewant to maintain the intrinsic character of ageing properties like Felbrigg Hall well intothe future, then we also need to preserve thetraditional skills and machines that will make

that possible.”

The Living Looms Project runs a small numberof unique, late 19th century carpet looms fromits workshop in Stourport-on-Severn in theWest Midlands – the last looms of their kind in the world and the only looms capable of producing an acceptable replica of a PrintedTapestry carpet like the one in Felbrigg’s library.

Mo Mant, from the Living Looms Project, said: “England has already lost many of its

traditional technologies, designsand skills and the textile industry has been one of theworst hit.

“Without the Living LoomsProject, numerous more historictextiles, including carpets andtapestries, will disappear. That is why it is vital that we workhand-in-hand with conservation

organisations like the National Trust. Oncegone, these textiles will be lost forever.”

At present, most of the original library carpet is covered up with a protective layer of hard-wearing material. It will undergo conservation work before being placed in theTrust’s archives. It is expected the new carpetwill be ready next year.

The 2012 North Norfolk District Council(NNDC) Graham Allen Award has been wonby a ‘weekend retreat’ which was once thefavourite of Edward VII.

The retreat, now The Gunton Arms at ThorpeMarket, dates from the 19th Century and wasthe former lodge to Gunton Hall. The buildinghad been in decline and looked to be followingthe same route as so many other traditional watering holes. However, considerable intervention, restoration and re-modelling havebreathed new life into this important Grade IIListed Building. The owner’s intention fromthe outset was to reinstate the building’s original character and architectural features.

North Norfolk District Council Cabinet Member for Planning, Rhodri Oliver, said“This is an excellent example of a restorationscheme that respects the original structure. Thescheme pays close attention to detail and new elements complement the historic structure. The building has been brought back to life andis a credit to everyone involved and to NorthNorfolk as a whole”.

A modern piece of contemporary design hasbeen highly commended. The Atrium, NorthWalsham, perfectly marries community needswith innovative spaces and striking design. The judges said the building was a bold architectural statement which has added another dimension to community facilities

in the town.

This year two schemes received a commendation; Moor Hall Farm, Briston andBrookside and Blogg Cottage, Kelling. MoorHall Farm saw the restoration of a derelict 18thCentury farm house and outbuildings with theaddition of a striking three-storey ‘tower’.

The scheme at Kelling saw the sensitive refurbishment of Brookside Cottage and theerection of the matching Blogg Cottage. This project was praised for its locally distinctive approach, vernacular design and

overall contribution to the setting and appearance of the Kelling Conservation Area.

The awards were presented at North NorfolkDistrict Council’s offices on 8 October by Edward Allen, the eldest son of the late Graham Allen who was the first chairman of North Norfolk District Council.

For more information on the Graham AllenAwards call Phil Godwin, NNDC ConservationDesign and Landscape Manager on (01263)516131 or Paul Rhymes, Conservation and Design Officer on (01263) 516367.

Dear Grumpy Old ManI am 100% with you. You do not stand alone in this respect. I, too, do not use a computer and have been subject to similar experiences. Fortunately I have a wife who can work the box and two children who will, if sometimesreluctantly, press all the appropriate buttons to get me what I want. The only advantage of the ‘plastic god’ is to makethings quicker but at my age I can afford the time. Seems thatto cram everything possible in to every minute of every day(even on holiday!) is the norm now but hey! Are things any better with computers? Nope!! Notice when the computerisedsystem in your local shop fails to perform, no purchases can bemade. The favoured excuse for inaction is ‘the computer’sdown’. Ask for something and the reply might well be ‘the computer won’t let me do that!’ Whatever the machine says isright – brainpower is eroded. We are supposed to talk throughthe box via e-mail thus doing away with the art of conversation, letter writing and/or penmanship. I don’t advocate a return tothe past but those in the present should acknowledge that untilevery last dinosaur has left the planet, consideration should begiven to those who want to wallow in the luxury of yesteryear.Grumpies unite!!!Terry Dacktill (correct name and address supplied)

Dear Grumpy Old ManHaving read your item in The North WalshamTimes complaining about computer use and how difficult you find it – your problems probably started with those 2 hourclasses. I first acquired a computer at age 60 – 13 years ago – andam self taught. I now run an online mail order business as wellas a designer/maker business and B&B – all have their ownwebsites and would not exist without an online presence. Anyone not computer literate now is cut off from so much.Skype for contacting friends and family in far flung parts of the world – this is a free mode of keeping in really good contactwith children, grandchildren and friends. Shopping online for groceries if one is housebound or unable to drive in this ruralarea where one can be very isolated. All one needs is to useemail and Google for all these contacts and information. Trouble is if you can’t - then you don’t know what you are missing. Don’t be so luddite – it’s not helpful to others and itsnegative. Many older people are very computer savvy and enjoyall the benefits from this. Facebook, Twitter and all the rest areoptional!Jan Horrox

Dear MargaretWith Christmas fast approaching please could you again ask readers of The North Walsham Times to save their stamps for me. I send the stamps on to the many charities I support. Thank you to all your readers who have sent me theirstamps so far. I will accept any stamps - albums, foreign, firstday covers etc. Many thanksJayne Manning, 111 Mill Road, Cromer, NR27 0AD
