When does my dog need to be on a leash? The City of Boardman Code

Compliance Department wants toremind pet owners of the need tokeep their dogs on a leash whenaway from home. Leash laws re-quire dogs to be on a leash andunder control whenever they’re offtheir owners’ property. This isdone for the safety of the pet aswell as the safety of others.Boardman Code Compliance, wants to ensure the health andwelfare of your animals, and thecitizens of Boardman.

Dogs are known to behave er-ratically at times. According to theCenter for Disease Control’swebsite, dogs bite approximately4.7 million people each year.

Leashes act as restraints for po-tentially dangerous canines. Re-search studies have also indicatedthat leashes keep dogs safe. Thereare other risks to allowing a dog torun at large. The dog could be hitby a passing vehicle. The petowner would be financially liable ifthe dog causes trouble.

A dog running loose can bepicked up and impounded. Theowner will be charged for the costof impounding the dog. If the dogis unlicensed, the owner will be re-quired to buy a license and willneed to provide proof of rabiesvaccination. If the dog is unvacci-nated, the owner will have to pay

for the vaccination before their dogcan be released.

To avoid these dangers andpotential costs, responsible petowners can follow these guidelines:· Leash your dog whenever offyour property· License your pet and have him/her wear a current license tag onthe collar· Keep your pet’s vaccinationsup-to-date, and keep currentrecords on file· Clean up after your petFor further information you cancontact the City of Boardman CodeCompliance Official, Keri Jarmer at(541) 481-9252.

ST. LOUIS (March 26, 2013) – Thedeadline is fast approaching forlocal school districts to competefor a grant of up to $25,000 throughAmerica’s Farmers Grow RuralEducation, sponsored by theMonsanto Fund. The more farm-ers who nominate a school district, the more it demonstrates commu-nity support and strengthens theschool district’s application. Or-egon schools will be eligible to re-ceive up to $45,000 in funding thisyear, and nominations will be ac-cepted until April 15, 2013. Schooladministrators have until April 30,2013, to submit their applications. This year, the program expands to26 new counties, for a total of 1,271eligible counties across 39 states.

“We are dedicated to improv-ing education in our farming com-munities,” said Deborah Patterson,Monsanto Fund president. “Work-ing together with farmers and ruralschool districts, we are providingresources necessary to acceleratemath and science learning – inspir-ing the students of today to be-come the leaders and innovatorsof tomorrow.”

Grow Rural Education grants willbe awarded based on merit, needand community support. TheAmerica’s Farmers Grow RuralEducation Advisory Council, agroup of 30 agricultural leaders

from across the country, will reviewand select the winning grant appli-cations. Advisory Council mem-bers were selected based on theirpassion for farming and education,as well as experience in rural schooldistricts.

Eligible farmers can nominatetheir favorite public school districtby visitingwww.GrowRuralEducation.comand following the “Nominate Now”link on the top, left-hand corner ofthe page. Farmers may also nomi-nate a school district by calling 1-877-267-3332. In 2012, Vale School District re-ceived $10,000 to expand its sci-ence laboratory.

“We were extremely excitedabout Grow Rural Education fromthe start,” said Karen Nunn, ValeSchool District business manager.“Our chemistry courses are verypopular, but the room is aging andtoo small to accommodate largeclass sizes. Now, we can bring ev-erything up to date with safetystandards and make the whole areamore usable for students.”

The America’s Farmers GrowRural Education program is part ofa broad commitment by theMonsanto Fund to partner withfarmers to strengthen rural commu-nities. Following a successful pi-lot in Minnesota and Illinois,America’s Farmers Grow RuralEducation debuted nationally lastyear, awarding $2.3 million toschool districts coast to coast.Another program that is part of thiseffort is America’s Farmers GrowCommunities, which gives winningfarmers the opportunity to direct a$2,500 donation to a communitynonprofit organization in theircounty.
