About NIDA NIDA is Australia’s National Institute of Dramatic Art, a centre of excellence in education and training for theatre, film and television. Since 1959 we have offered a variety of exceptional educational experiences through a range of full-time and short courses.

NIDA Open NIDA Open delivers industry-leading programs across Australia in the form of short courses, studios and residencies for adults, young people and children, as well as skills development opportunities for business professionals.

Location Unless otherwise specified all courses are held at NIDA’s award-winning facilities at 215 Anzac Parade, Kensington, just 15 minutes from the Sydney CBD.

RESIDENCIES

Actors ResidenciesDevelop and extend your acting technique as you collaborate with industry practitioners within a dedicated and intensive training environment. NIDA’s residencies are designed for people with experience or training who wish to commit to comprehensive skills development over an extended period of time. Applications are accepted internationally, nationally and locally – creating a vibrant cultural community. The course emphasis is on a process-driven approach to elicit truthful performances, and to engage audiences. Choose from the three or four week option, as outlined below.

Week 1 5 Jan – 9 JanExtend your vocal, physical and improvisational technique in relation to performance. Build skills towards a secure approach to acting.

Week 2 12 Jan – 16 JanCollaborate with a director to rehearse detailed and demanding scenework for presentation.

Week 3 19 Jan – 23 JanDevelop awareness of your screen presence through building a practical understanding of the filming process. Prepare and film exercises to camera.

Week 4 26 Jan – 30 JanRehearse and shoot scenes for film and TV and participate in industry standard, simulated screen tests. Receive edited footage from the week’s scenework.

Advanced Actors ResidencyThis advanced program is for those who have completed a NIDA Actors Residency, or at least one year of full-time or part-time actor training. Participate in scene study, an ensemble rehearsal process, cold reads, simulated screentests and a studio performance. Scripts will be allocated prior to the commencement of the residency. A maximum of 12 students will be accepted.

Week 1 12 Jan – 16 JanWorkshop and rehearse challenging scenes with a theatre director, and undertake advanced instrument training. Prepare scenes for studio presentation.

Week 2 19 Jan – 23 JanWork on a studio set with a film and television director on emotionally complex scenes. Scenes will be filmed by a professional camera operator. Students receive copies of one edited scene and one screen test from the week’s work.

Music Theatre ResidencyExtend your singing, acting and dancing skills as you collaborate with industry practitioners to build performance technique, rehearse material and explore pathways into the industry. This residency is for people with some experience as singers.

Week 1 5 Jan – 9 JanIdentify and extend your strengths, develop a secure approach to acting, prepare choreographed routines and create music theatre scenes.

Week 2 12 Jan – 16 JanGain confidence with auditions, practise contemporary styles of song and dance and engage an audience with a studio performance at the end of the week.

NIDA Acting TechniquesDevelop core acting skills in voice, movement, improvisation and characterisation. Respond to scripts, relate to others effectively and perform with ease and skill.

Masterclass: StanislavskiWhat is emotional recall and how does it apply to character and scenework? Konstantin Stanislavski’s methods are still widely used and are essential to actor training systems worldwide.

Masterclass: LabanExtensively explore Rudolf Laban’s unique approach to performance and discover why it is a popular rehearsal tool for actors and directors when considering how to create character.



Stand Up ComedyFor the budding comedian: discover and develop skills in stand-up comedy. Explore slapstick, clowning and the double act. Write and tell funny stories, use the microphone effectively and make your audience laugh! This course is also excellent for building confidence in front of an audience.

Screen Acting EssentialsDevelop screen presence and acting skills for rehearsing and performing scenes to camera. Be filmed in short scenes from the best in television and film drama.

Voice WorkoutThe importance of vocal training to a successful performance is immeasurable. Spend a day focusing on this most necessary of tools for an actor.



Screen Acting on Location Rehearse and perform scenes from contemporary film and TV and gain confidence in acting boldly but honestly for the camera on location. Follow industry standard shooting practices with a professional tutor on the cinematic surrounds of Cockatoo Island. Receive a copy of selected scenes.

The Total ActorA good actor is master of one technique, a great actor is master of many. Undergo intensive practise in different approaches to constructing a performance: Stanislavski System, Laban, Meisner, Vocal Technique, Viewpoints and more.



Accents EssentialsDevelop fundamental skills required for creating an American and British accent. Be introduced to the phonetic alphabet and understand how it can assist you in learning a wide variety of accents.

The Business of Being an ActorWhat are agents and casting directors looking for? How do you survive in such a tough profession? Meet industry guests to find out, and participate in simulated casting sessions.



Masterclass: MeisnerUtilise techniques made famous by Sanford Meisner whether as a director, teacher or performer. Through repetition exercises, imaginative preparation and action playing, you will learn how to be truthful and in the moment while forming strong connections between performers.

NIDA Acting Techniques 2Designed for those who have completed a NIDA acting short course or have relevant experience; this course focuses on in-depth character and scene analysis. Undertake challenging acting exercises to develop emotional truth and perform complex scenes with confidence.



Acting ShakespeareBalance passion and intellect to deliver fresh readings of theatre’s most famous characters. Learn new ways to tackle classical language in soliloquies, sonnets and scenes while capturing the humanity in history’s most powerful stories.



Screen Acting TechniquesDiscover your individual screen presence. Rehearse and perform scenes from contemporary film and television and gain confidence in acting boldly and honestly for the camera.



Acting: An IntroductionThrough practical activities, discover the fundamental skills required for acting. Identify how to create character and how to respond effectively to other performers.



Autocue EssentialsLearn from an industry expert how to effectively use an autocue to clearly deliver your copy to camera. Engage with a range of strategies to assist you on your way to a seamless read.



Voice OversDevelop your understanding of breath, pitch and pace to engage listeners. Communicate character and inspire imaginations in this intensive workshop designed to meet the demands of industry practice.



Acting EssentialsDevelop core acting skills including improvisation, voice and movement. Gain confidence rehearsing and performing short scenes.

Screen Acting Techniques 2For students who have completed a NIDA screen acting short course or have relevant experience. Develop skills to enable you to give a screen performance with detail and integrity. Work on creating strong connections with other performers and be directed in dynamic scenework.



Faking ItBeing shot, acting drunk, waking up, crying, and laughing. The demands placed on an actor can be exacting, and require you to overstretch your range. This is a detailed exploration of how physical impulses can trigger imaginative emotional connections, so you don’t have to fake it.



Voice Overs ExtensionFor those who have completed the NIDA voice overs course. Extend your skills and work with an industry expert to create a professional recording of contrasting content to take away as part of the course.



Voice EssentialsLearn how the voice works to release its power in performance. Explore a variety of texts to develop your vocal clarity and impact.



Costume MakingExplore costume styles and the realities of costume making through practical exercises. Be inspired to create original costumes.



Costume Design EssentialsDevelop original character designs for stage or screen with practical exercises that build skills and inspire visual excellence as a storyteller and collaborator.



Design for the TheatreHow do you create an imaginative world through set and costume design? This introductory course gives you an overview through practical exercises. Explore bold and imaginative design options.



Accessing EmotionLearn how to access emotion safely and quickly to create truth in your next character portrayal. Using the Stanislavski technique you will be equipped with the skills necessary to harness your inner emotions authentically.



NIDA Midsummer NightAs the sun sets on another creative week at NIDA, kick back to the sounds of summer with live music and performances in our outdoor theatre space. Take part in a pop-up performance, decompress to disco, or just spend an evening hanging out with your NIDA community.

Directing for the FilmmakerDevelop the fundamentals of screen direction. Identify how best to collaborate with a creative team, how to tell a story visually, how to construct scenes and develop camera skills. Discover methods for obtaining outstanding performances from your actors.

Directing Actors for the StageUnder the supervision of an experienced director, work with NIDA student actors and discover methods by which to get outstanding performances.



Directing Actors for the ScreenGain confidence in working with actors and discover methods to elicit outstanding screen performances. Explore directing systems and work with talented NIDA actors.



Making a Short FilmExplore the short film format and learn about the common pitfalls of making shorts. Identify production roles, know your equipment and develop skills in visual storytelling using music, sound and lighting to maximise impact. Receive a copy of the short film.

Filmmaking on Location Develop filmmaking skills and uncover the techniques of on location shooting as you work with screen acting students and an experienced directing mentor. MUSIC THEATRE

Music Theatre EssentialsExplore the essentials of acting and singing in music theatre. Work with a director to develop a solo or duet music theatre performance.

Vaudeville and VarietiesFrom its origins in Commedia dell’arte and Pantomime to its contemporary revival in Burlesque, the world of Vaudeville captures the popular imagination with its heady mix of vintage style storytelling, spectacle and show(wo)manship. This course looks specifically at the hallmarks of this theatrical style with its unique blend of music, bawdy comedy, sly satire, show stopping choreography and audience interaction. Showcase your newly minted variety act at the conclusion of your course.

Stage Management EssentialsThe stage manager is the vital link between the artistic and logistic elements of a live production. Develop production skills to communicate effectively with cast and crew and learn methods for scheduling, running rehearsals and calling a show.



TV Presenting TechniquesDevelop screen presence and the multiplicity of skills required to communicate to a television audience. Build confidence with interview technique for lifestyle, chat show and magazine programs. Create a range of scripted and non-scripted segments for the studio and on location.
