aT ciTy and islingTon college, we believe in enriching our sTudenTs’ lives, boTh inside and ouTside The classroom.

supporT for lifeIn addition to supporting your studies, we offer help and guidance for life outside the classroom too. Our advisers and counsellors provide impartial advice and support on practical issues such as studying while on benefits, accommodation and immigration. We can also advise on financial support, bursaries, loans and scholarships.

If you need information and guidance on careers and your next step, there’s support for you too, including visits to universities, meeting employers at jobs fairs and developing your employability skills.

The College is proud of the rich diversity of our students. We believe in equality and fairness for all our students and are committed to ensuring equality of opportunity for all who learn here.

college nurseriesThe College has two nurseries, providing limited places for students’ children, prioritising children aged 2-5 years. The nurseries are based at the Centre for Business, Arts and Technology on Camden Road and the Centre for Lifelong Learning in Finsbury Park.

In March 2012, our Camden Road Nursery joined the Islington Register of Good Practice, and its outdoor play area was recognised in particular for its role in supporting children’s learning. With a multi-sensory garden, it provides opportunities for children to dig and grow healthy foods in a small space.

Both College nurseries have recently been inspected by Ofsted and graded as Good. Ofsted said “The overall quality of teaching is good and some is outstanding. Staff provide a varied and interesting range of activities, both indoors and outdoors, that are based on children’s interests. As a result, children make good progress in their learning and development.”

Ofsted also commented, “There are excellent systems in place for working in partnership with parents and other professionals. These links make a very positive contribution towards the continuity and support children receive in their care and learning.”

He said: “I’ve always been very passionate about Law and human rights and have seen it as my mission to pursue a career where I can make a difference.”

He said: “My advice to those mature students thinking of taking an Access course or studying Law at university is to plan ahead and look to gain some relevant work experience, preferably as soon as possible. I chose to volunteer at my local Citizens Advice Bureau.

“Also, it is important to realise that mature students will have to deal with some responsibilities that other students may not. More often than not the road will be long and bumpy. But you just need to be realistic and sincerely passionate about what you really want to do.”

louisawilson

Studied: Medicine and Medical Biosciences – Access to Higher Education Diploma

Destination: Applied Medical Science at University College London

Louisa Wilson was told at school that she should give up studying science. After completing her degree, her ambition is to study post-graduate medicine.

She said: “Studying at City and Islington gave me the belief, direction and support to achieve what I have.

“The College’s Centre for Applied Sciences has put me on the right footing for a long awaited path to learning what “I” want to learn, and has supported me throughout. I’m now anticipating some very exciting years at UCL, and looking forward to a fulfi lling career at the end of it.’’

To help support her return to education, Louisa took out a 24+ Loan which covered her College fees. If Louisa goes on to complete her degree she will not have to pay a penny of the loan back.

She said: “I have a family, and returning to education involves a lot of worries – not just confi dence but the fi nances involved. The 24+ Loan really gave me that reassurance and motivation that I could get fi nancial help, and that if I achieved what I set out to do my College course would be free.”

Thijaya, 20, grew up near an airport and from a young age was fascinated by planes.

“I always loved materials and aerospace, and one day I want to train to become a pilot.

“A friend of mine recommended the College, so I enrolled to study Applied Science before progressing to the Extended Diploma in Engineering.

“I’ve really enjoyed putting the theory we learn into practice. The facilities are fantastic and there are brand new workshops where we can use industry-standard laser machines, computers and 3D printers.”

Asked why she thinks women don’t traditionally pursue careers in engineering, she said:

“There are lots of misconceptions. Girls think Engineering means you want to become a car mechanic. But the industry is so broad, with so many opportunities. Engineering is all about ideas and the team work needed to execute those ideas.”

Thijaya completed a summer work placement organised by the College at global satellite communication company, Inmarsat. She said: “This was an eye-opening experience and really related to the aerospace engineering career that I want to pursue.”
