Why it is the time to rise up.

Dear NHSA Members, Sponsors and Friends,

During the Chicago NHSA Convention-the fifth since we started this journey- we are electing our new

Board for the 2011-2012 academic year.

Two years ago a few Universities started the NHSA with the vision to unify all the Hellenic Student

Groups in the American Institutions; An independent student organization that would make us feel confi

dent to preserve and develop Hellenism across the US in our academic and local communities.

Today this message has arrived at almost every corner of this country and back in our homeland. More

people become multipliers of our initiatives, our programs, our dream for a learning organization, where

we can all share and allocate the unique resources of the US Universities and the Hellenic intellectual ca-

pacity. This allows us to serve as carriers of Hellenism and Παιδεία (Education), the integral compo-

nents of our identity.

After two productive years the time has come that the New Board with the Regional Directors will con-

tinue the NHSA legacy. The stakes are high; the NHSA leadership is crucial. We are all responsible to

take advantage of the momentum that has been achieved and get involved.

I would like to thank the 2009-2011 NHSA Board Members that offered their hearts to this Association

and inspired all of us to vision how we all want to see the NHSA after many years and work toward this

endeavor.

This is our big challenge, our great dream; to see more and more people live the NHSA Adventure and

continue the NHSA noble cause so that after many years we will be the sponsors, the mentors and the

friends of our children in their Hellenic Associations, through which they will in their turn teach us how

to stay unified and serve Hellenism in good and difficult times.

Sincerely,

The NHSA President,

Yiorgos Nikoletakis

Milestone Project: Study Abroad– Exchange Program The National Hellenic Student Association of America (NHSA) is pleased to announce and propose t

layout of our milestone project, the Greece Study Abroad Exchange Program. The main goal of this program w

be to provide students in the U.S. and in Greece with the opportunity to experience interesting

challenging educational environments in either the United States or in Greece.

The NHSA has already directed several American students to participate in study abroad programs in Greece

through third party organizations that collect separate fees. Our goal is to act as facilitators in creating direct and ef

cient bilateral agreements between universities in the U.S. and in Greece without the presence of a third party organ

ization. Students continuously express to us their eager interest to study both in Greece and in the U.S. for six mont

or year long programs. Our project of facilitating the building of a student exchange network the likes of which exi

in almost every E.U. country except Greece as of right now, becomes a necessity.

NHSA aims to act as mediator and facilitate the employment of direct student exchange programs utilizing t

mutual mobility concept found in similar programs already in place for European Students that go to Greece. Mo

Universities in the U.S have exchange programs with almost every country in Europe and generally follow a specifmodel in the bilateral agreements between institutions. This model, currently a trend used in American universities,

both financially and administratively efficient. Each student remains registered and pays their normal tuition/ fees

their home institution, most likely maintaining all scholarships and financial aid throughout the program duratio

Both universities have a registered and paid position for an eligible student and a bilateral agreement is easily ma

between the two universities to ―switch students‖, hence the student exchange for a temporary period of time. Sin

Greek universities do not charge ―home institution‖ tuition, this means that Greek students can study in the U.S. wi

out being required to pay any tuition fees. Our spirit and current objectives are to promote the exchange of information, people, ideas, and educational exp

riences between Greece and other states. Our Vision is to develop corresponding programs in collaboration with Un

versities all over the U.S. & Canada and create a leading link of mutual understanding between Hellenic and Amecan Educational Institutions. Under the scope of this Project, the NHSA will:

Provide information on the feasibility and all requirements needed to be considered, before intra -university co

tact

Bring the two sides (Office of International Studies of American Universities and the Office of Exchange Pr

grams & the Deans in the Greek Universities) in touch and shape the bilateral agreements with them

Launch these programs and promote them in the individual Universities

Consult the students in shaping the Exchange Programs with compatible courses to the currently offered degree

Last but not least, support and help participating students with their smooth adjustment to the new education

environment and student life

Completely convinced about the necessity of this initiative, we are looking forward to putting forth all our effor

and offering our valuable experience and passion to the establishment and implementation of th

milestone Study Abroad and Exchange Program between Greek and US Universities.

This is our Milestone Project for 2010-2011 and reflects the mission, the identity of our organization. This is w

we are asking for the highest level of emotional, financial and political support and your contribution to this initi

tive.

NHSA Greece Info-Sessions

While aiming to clarify and inform Greek university students on the application process for graduate schools in the U.S., the NHSA organized a series of Info -Sessions. Held during Christmas and

summer breaks, the Info-Sessions are designed as a communication channel between Greek stu-dents in the US and Greece. This year’s Info-Sessions were held at the National Technical Universty of Athens, the University of Athens and the University of Crete. They had an outstanding attendance with a success of reaching out to more than two hundred students.

Among the goals we are proud to have achieved are:

Fostering Collaboration between HSA’s across the US.

Educating Greek students on the processes of applying for graduate schools and scholarship

to study in the U.S.

Bringing the NHSA closer to its future members and tightening the bonds between the NHSA and Greek Universities.

Informing Greek students about NHSA Initiatives organized by the NHSA and our memberHSA’s (e.g. the Berkeley-Stanford trip and the NHSA student exchange program).

Creating an easy applications guide on our website and eventually turning our website intoan information portal for studies in the US.

Demonstrating the benefits and success of turning an initiative of a member HSA (in thiscase the MIT HSA) into an NHSA project.

Ways we are looking to improve NHSA Info-Sessions in the future:

Hold sessions at more universities; officials at the University of Patras, the Athens Universty of Economics and Business, and the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki have agreed toallow us to hold future info-sessions next year.

We are designing a Wiki, where NHSA members can upload detailed information about dif-ferent universities and fields of study.

Collaborating with our colleagues in Europe could give students in Greece more informatioabout studying abroad and provide the opportunity for the NHSA to act as a nucleus for Greek students working together on a wider scale.

The Student Hellenic Diaspora and the Greek Economy‘s

Restorative Efforts

The NHSA has held on various occasions discussions and forums with academics and policy advi-sors on the topic of:

“The Greek Financial Turmoil and the Role of the Young Diaspora in our universities an

working environments: How students in America can contribute to awareness and

restorative efforts in Greece.”

We, the Hellenic-American students in the U.S. are not in charge of the Greek national economy, nor are we financial analysts or specialists in financial crisis. However, we are certain that econo-mies are run on perceptions, on ideas that are being spread from the media and also from people

like us, from mouth to mouth, in our everyday life. What we are aware of is that we are active students in the academic environments, in American Universities that are think tanks and influ

ential centers, where interaction can reflect the reality instead of a miserable mentality that i

reproduced for Greece.

What we strive do: Make everybody in our environment aware of the situation, the weaknesses, the

strengths, the opportunity for change

Shape the factual arguments that students can use in their communities that supportGreece’s financial health and ability to articulate these arguments  Create a common information reference point that can reliably, without exaggera-

tions, inform anyone who wants to objectively realize the different parameters thataffect Greece’s economy

Over the past year we have hosted various speakers and specialists on the Greek

economic crisis including (to name a few):

Ms. Elena Panaritis: Institutional Economist, Greek Parliament member, economic advisor toGreek Prime Minister Papandreou, advisor for World Bank, and adjunct lecturer at John Hop-kins University-SAIS and Wharton School of Business

Dr. George Pinteris: professor of finance and economics at the Ohio State University Fisher College of Business, published in academic journals on the Greek Economic Crisis

Hellenic Entrepreneurship SymposiumsIn collaboration with & the support of the Hellenic Business Network (HBN)

These one-day symposiums are designed to explore the challenges and opportunities faced by entrpreneurs and start-up companies in an ever competitive global market space while at the same timrecognize and celebrate Hellenes and Philhellenes who are active in the entrepreneurial process.

Successful Symposiums have been held with the University of California, Berkeley in Novembe

2010 and at Columbia University in April, 2011. This is a great success for NHSA in general because local HSA chapters and their leaders have taken great steps and hard work to promote theNHSA scope and ideals continuously even on a local level. The fact that the event was such a suc-cess at UC Berkeley and then was re-implemented in New York City at Columbia University show

the connectivity and the team work of our organization at the national level.

A sample of the program which took place at Columbia University on April 4th can be found

below:

1.  The entrepreneurs point of view: Start-up founders talk about their start-ups, their experienceand gaps in technology/energy/biotech/social media that can create ideas
