The fact of this large participation is not significant by itself. The NHSA is proud of its rapid growth and advancement in membership, programs offered, stability, and continuity during almost two years in existence from our founding in Spring of 2009, a fact we hope will be evident in this convention’s events, itinerary, and participation. Thus, we would like to describe to you what this convention will entail, what it means to us, the activ- ity it triggers for the Hellenic Youth communities around the US, our peers in Greece, and most im- portantly what plans our Board and committees will be implementing during the remainder of the 2010-2011 academic year. In this booklet you may find our Honored Guest Speak- ers’ topics and backgrounds, the Convention Schedule, the newly established Student Exchange Pro- gram Participation information, Board Members, Member Universities, and last but not least our loyal supporters and sponsors. This convention’s highlight is the lecture series and professional mentorship fair. Our goal is to edu- cate our members, peers, and communities by bringing knowledgeable and respected members of our national Greek-American community to speak to us on matters of importance to Greek-Americans and Greeks. We are featuring a series of lectures on the Greek economic crisis and its roles in the European Union, the issues of human rights and the Greek minority in Turkey, the advancement and education of children of Greek immigrants, and environmental issues both world-wide and in Greece. We officially represent 40 universities at this point and we continually keep growing in numbers. Dear NHSA Friend & Supporter,

We are in the pleasant position to welcome you on November 12-14, 2010 at the NHSA Convention

Fall 2010 with student representatives from over 25 participating Hellenic Student Associations from

universities located all over the US. The fact of this large participation is not significant by itself. It is

along with the Convention agenda’s and NHSA’s programming that make such a gathering essential

to our Hellenic Student community.

The NHSA is proud of its rapid growth and advancement in membership, programs offered,

stability, and continuity during almost two years in existence from our founding in Spring of 2009, a

fact we hope will be evident in this convention’s events, itinerary, and participation.

Thus, we would like to describe to you what this convention will entail, what it means to us, the activ-

ity it triggers for the Hellenic Youth communities around the US, our peers in Greece, and most im-

portantly what plans our Board and committees will be implementing during the

remainder of the 2010-2011 academic year. In this booklet you may find our Honored Guest Speak-

ers’ topics and backgrounds, the Convention Schedule, the newly established Student Exchange Pro-

gram Participation information, Board Members, Member Universities, and last but not least our loyal

supporters and sponsors.

This convention’s highlight is the lecture series and professional mentorship fair. Our goal is to edu-

cate our members, peers, and communities by bringing knowledgeable and respected members of our

national Greek-American community to speak to us on matters of importance to Greek-Americans

and Greeks. We are featuring a series of lectures on the Greek economic crisis and its roles in the

European Union, the issues of human rights and the Greek minority in Turkey, the advancement and

education of children of Greek immigrants, and environmental issues both world-wide and in Greece.

We officially represent 40 universities at this point and we continually keep growing in numbers.

However, we are even more proud of growing internally, keeping always in mind the NHSA scope

and principles as defined in our Constitution (find it on the NHSA Welcome website Page). We have

created a valuable network for the NHSA Members and our supporters, and we run projects and hold

events at the local and the national level in our Universities.

Foremost, we make any member of this National Hellenic Student Association feel confident that

there is an organization that is creating the circumstances and the opportunities for them to de-

velop themselves, at the same time they enrich the Hellenic spirit on campuses nationwide.

Mission Statement

Our mission is to develop a central body of representation for all Hellenic Student Associations

of America, which provides dynamic opportunities and promotes large-scale activities. We

serve as the premiere formal Association for all Hellenic Student Associations around the US.

We make it possible for any of our members to take advantage of the synergies created through

the broad network that our Association has already established and get involved in the national

level activities and programs.

Find sources to fund the NHSA, which enables the organization to be financially and

functionally autonomous and allows us to act independently toward the objectives and goals of

our mission.

Organize, as the umbrella association, a variety of events and workshops along with the local

HSAs.

Entrepreneurship events that allow the students to get exposed to Hellenic corporations

and individuals in the US and in Greece and create potential for funding and product

development for new ideas.

Political Affairs events that keep the Members and their communities informed about

current political issues and play a role of raising awareness about the Hellenic issues in

the American Universities and in the US in general.

Networking events through the local HSAs.

Parties and dances for fundraising purposes and ..for fun!

Support Hellenic Studies in American Universities; Raise awareness about the importance of

the Greek Language (modern and ancient) and History in American Universities and signed

petitions over the cease of Hellenic Courses in Universities; Promote the “Study Abroad

Programs in Greece”.

Support and take organizational responsibility for Hellenic cultural ventures e.g. The Trojan

Women theatrical production across the U.S.A.

Aid individual Hellenic Associations in maintaining a standard for methods and procedures

internally and on the larger-scale university level.

Promote relations not only among the members of the Hellenic Student Associations, but also

with members of academic communities both Greek and non-Greek.

Create the basis for an Alumni Association that will help NHSA Members with business con-

tacts, current work conditions, and the Job Market in Greece and ensures continuous contact

with the Universities and the NHSA itself.

Milestone Project: Study Abroad– Exchange Program

The National Hellenic Student Association of America (NHSA) is pleased to announce and propose the

layout of our milestone project, the Greece Study Abroad Exchange Program. The main goal of this program will be

to provide students in the U.S. and in Greece with the opportunity to experience interesting and

challenging educational environments in either the United States or in Greece.

The NHSA has already directed several American students to participate in study abroad programs in Greece through

third party organizations that collect separate fees. Our goal is to act as facilitators in creating direct and efficient bilat-

eral agreements between universities in the U.S. and in Greece without the presence of a third party organization. Stu-

dents continuously express to us their eager interest to study both in Greece and in the U.S. for six month or year long

programs. Our project of facilitating the building of a student exchange network the likes of which exists in almost every

E.U. country except Greece as of right now, becomes a necessity.

NHSA aims to act as mediator and facilitate the employment of direct student exchange programs utilizing the

mutual mobility concept found in similar programs already in place for European Students that go to Greece. Most

Universities in the U.S have exchange programs with almost every country in Europe and generally follow a specific

model in the bilateral agreements between institutions. This model, currently a trend used in American universities, is

both financially and administratively efficient. Each student remains registered and pays their normal tuition/ fees to their

home institution, most likely maintaining all scholarships and financial aid throughout the program duration. Both

universities have a registered and paid position for an eligible student and a bilateral agreement is easily made between

the two universities to “switch students”, hence the student exchange for a temporary period of time. Since Greek

universities do not charge “home institution” tuition, this means that Greek students can study in the U.S. without being

required to pay any tuition fees.

We are already launching our initiative with the established Lifelong Learning Program/Erasmus in Athens

University of Economics and Business (AUEB). Our spirit and current objectives are to promote the

exchange of information, people, ideas, and educational experiences between Greece and EU member states. Our Vision

is to develop corresponding programs in collaboration with Universities all over the U.S. & Canada and create a leading

link of mutual understanding between Hellenic and American Educational Institutions. Under the scope of this Project,

the NHSA will:

Provide information on the feasibility and all requirements needed to be considered, before intra-university contact

Bring the two sides (Office of International Studies of American Universities and the Office of Exchange Programs &

the Deans in the Greek Universities) in touch and shape the bilateral agreements with them

Launch these programs and promote them in the individual Universities

Consult the students in shaping the Exchange Programs with compatible courses to the currently offered degrees

Last but not least, support and help participating students with their smooth adjustment to the new educational

environment and student life

Completely convinced about the necessity of this initiative, we are looking forward to putting forth all our efforts and

offering our valuable experience and passion to the establishment and implementation of this

milestone Study Abroad and Exchange Program between Greek and US Universities.

This is our Milestone Project for 2010-2011 and reflects the mission, the identity of our organization. This is why we

are asking for the highest level of emotional, financial and political support and your contribution to this initiative.

Last but not least…

We thank all of our sponsors; organizations, societies and individuals that believe in the

mission that we serve and support us toward our vision that -we hope- is inspiring to

them.

We thank the members of our Advisory Board that is still growing with faculty and

people from the academia from different Universities

And of course the Hellenic Associations that apart from their organizational efforts,

contributed financially to the Convention.

Lastly, there have been a lot of people since our beginning that have contributed in

many ways to make this organization strong enough to make an impact on our

communities. We expect these people to participate even more in our efforts and new

members, supporters, and sponsors to find that supporting the NHSA means supporting

themselves and their communities.
