Newsletter Thunk of the Week:

If you draw a random squiggle that happens

to look like a face, have you drawn a face?

6 June 2014

This Term our learning habit is ‘Risk Taking’

or opinions.

Mrs Anne Daish, our current Head of

Art, has been appointed as Head of

Art and Design Technology to take

over from Dr Andy Cannons.

Miss Tina Kelley will be taking over

more of the art lessons that Mrs Daish

currently teaches. We will also have two

new Sports Graduate Coaches starting

in September – Mr Bull and Miss Hovington. We will be teaching a new

weekly Philosophy and Thinking Skills

lesson to every class in J1-3 from

September, which is very exciting. This

will be taught by Revd Graham Wright

who is also taking over as House Parent

of our boarders, along with his wife

Joanna, as Mr & Mrs Bennett step down

from this role after 11 happy and

successful years.

Our J4s had a memorable trip to watch

the National Theatre’s award winning

production of War Horse at the

Alhambra Theatre in Bradford. The

production was fantastic, but there was

a fire on the roof half way through the

performance, necessitating an

evacuation. However, in the spirit of the

play the cast carried on with the show,

once everyone was allowed back in the

building.

The guest speaker at this year’s Speech

Day is Sally Kettle. Sally is a Fellow of

the Royal Geographic Society and a

woman of many talents as an adventurer,

marathon runner, personal trainer,

author, speaker and event host. She is

the first woman to row the Atlantic

Ocean twice, from East to West, and

once with her mother - earning a

coveted Guinness World Record!

Nothing seems to faze Sally, for instance

in May 2010 she took part in the last leg

of the Round-the-World Clipper Yacht

Race, returning to Hull in July. She

travelled to Padang in Sumatra, to help

some of the 250,000 families affected by

a devastating earthquake, as part of the International Shelterbox Response

Team.

In October 2011 she was deployed to

Thailand to support families affected by

extensive flooding. Sally has also

retraced the footsteps of WW2

Resistance heroine Nancy Wake in a

demanding trek across the Pyrenees.

Sally joined exceptional women from

each of the Armed Forces to raise

money for the Royal British Legion.

She certainly epitomises this half term’s

learning habit – risk taking. I hope you’ll

be able to come and listen to her speak.

Andy Falconer

The Master

“Never look down on someone,

unless you’re helping them up” was

the theme in this week’s Assembly. We

looked at how Thomas Barnardo and

Gordon Roddick both saw a need and

did something about it.

We focused on the work of

The Big Issue and the difference

between giving someone a hand out and

a hand up. Every homeless person has a

story, is someone’s son or daughter and

the challenge is to see them as individual

people and not just ‘homeless’. The

point was also made that it’s often

better to give someone a meal or hot

drink rather than money, if unsure on

how it will be spent.

My thanks to Ms Brooks in particular,

and the whole J1 team and parents who

put on the most fantastic

International Buffet to celebrate

Le Grand Depart for the

Tour de France. Parents came in and we

ate food from all around the world

whilst looking at the children’s work.

On the final day of the half term we had a fantastic Crazy Tie and Sock day at St Olave’s. This was the very creative fundraising idea of Ella

and Georgina who not only came up with the theme but also organised tie and sock related games in the Junior Playground at lunchtime. Lots

of people joined in sock throwing which was more difficult than it looked! The teachers joined in too and there was a game involving guessing

which teacher was wearing the ties – some had clues linked to their subjects but some were rather more random! Over all they managed to

raise over £500 for our charity, York Against Cancer. Thank you very much for the brilliant crazy socks and ties and your continued support

of York Against Cancer.

A reminder that girls should wear

winter uniform (winter blouse, ties,

blazers, not jumpers).

Boys should wear short sleeved white

shirts, ties, blazers, not jumpers.

Speech Day starts at 10.45am

(please be seated by 10.40am) and will

finish around 12 noon.

The J5 Leavers’ Service starts at

8.50am in the Chapel and will last 40

minutes.

Parents are invited to attend.

Pupils in J1 - J4 who are not attending

the Leavers’ Service do not need to arrive at school until 9.45am. School

will be open as normal for those who

want to arrive earlier.

Pupils arriving before 9.45am must

report to staff on duty.

At 9.45am pupils should go to the

junior play area or the Music

department if it is wet weather.

J5 Parents

Refreshments for J5 Parents will be

served after the Leavers’ Service.

Crazy Tie and Sock Day

weekend? Why not try something

new? Ready, Steady, BAKE!

The pupils who attend Animal Club are

holding a cake stall at break time in the

Queen Anne Dining Hall on

Wednesday 11 June. All cakes will

cost 50 pence.

Please get baking over the weekend and

bring any cakes/biscuits to the Dining

Hall on Wednesday morning. Many

thanks.

Thank you on behalf of the animals.

Miss Fell

in the European Championships in

Holland this half term.

All the effort and hard work with hours

of training through the winter has paid

off.

National Preparatory School Orchestras'

Summer Courses

These courses are to encourage promising musicians to experience the inspiring sounds of a full symphony orchestra. Children

are guided by experts and, in the company of peers, encouraged to enjoy the vibrant and invigorating atmosphere of shared

music-making.

Please look at their website, www.npso.co.uk where you will find information about the courses and application forms.

Specifically you will find details of the Symphony Orchestra Course, conducted by Philip Scriven and the Training Orchestra

Course, for the less experienced, conducted by Peter Davis.

The two residential courses will be held in the picturesque setting of Wellington College, Berkshire from 13 - 19 July 2014.

Both courses will have a team of experienced, fully qualified and DBS checked pastoral staff to ensure that children are properly

cared for at all times and to encourage them to take full advantage of the wonderful recreational facilities.

J5s are currently working on a Gala

and drama from all J5 pupils.

This is to take place on Monday 30 June

at 6.30pm. They are already busy

organising everything – the acts, music,

Professor Monica Grady - Order from Chaos, Chaos from Order: Dust, Planets and Meteorites - Monday 16 June

7pm in the Memorial Hall

Around 4567 million years ago, a swirling cloud of gas and dust collapsed, and from the chaos emerged an ordered system: In

her talk, Professor Monica Grady will explore how the Solar System formed, and what we can learn about this from meteorites.

Along the way, she will consider just why the dinosaurs

became extinct, and the importance of keeping penguin feathers out of Antarctic ice. More here: http://

York Festival of Ideas Debate: Religion, Science and Medicine - Chaired by Ruth Gledhill Religion Correspondent of

‘The Times’ with Canon Chris Collingwood (York Minster) and Dr Tara Alberts (University of York) on the panel.

Wednesday 18 June from 5.45pm in the Shepherd Hall at St Peter's School.

Has the relationship between religion and science always been one marked by conflict? What were the complex ways in which

religion was entwined with the enlightenment? In what ways did the reformation cause changes in the ways the Bible was inter-

preted, the natural sciences were presented and modernity was defined? How can we locate the role of religion within science

and medicine within a modernising world? … are just some of the questions which will be discussed.

Speakers and Panellists include Professor Peter Harrison (University of Queensland), Professor Ron Numbers (University of

Madison-Wisconsin), Professor Janet Golden (Rutgers University), Dr Tara Alberts (University of York), Canon Chris Colling-

wood (York Minster) and Professor Erez Manela (Harvard University). More here http://yorkfestivalofideas.com/2014/talks/

panel debate at 7.15pm
