The St. Peter’s School 2017-2018 Annual Report

honors alumni, parents, grandparents, faculty, staff,

and friends whose generosity enables our students

to fulfill their potential.

This online format enables SPS to be a good steward

of your gifts and to reduce the impact on the

environment, eliminating production and

mailing costs. This report catalogs the

dedication and devotion of our community

in turning shared goals and aspirations

into reality though gifts received

between July 1, 2017

and June 30, 2018.

Every effort has been made to ensure the accuracy of the information and listing in this report. Please accept our sincere apologies if any errors or omissions have been made. Please bring oversights to the attention of the Director of Advancement, Clare Dych.

Letter from the Head of School

Dear St. Peter’s School Community,

Who are we? We have asked ourselves this question over the past year and it has required us to look broadly at many important aspects of our identity. We considered who we have been, who we are, and most importantly, who we will become. We have come to the most obvious answer first: we are a school. We work each day with young children and young adults to help them find meaning in their world; to find meaning in themselves. We provide each student with a set of expectations to interact with those around them and a set of tools to use to solve problems. Our goal is to engage each learner in their own education.

We are a community. We bring students, families, and educators together to learn from one another, to celebrate the uniqueness of each person, and to support our mission and goals. We ask each other about our traditions and cultures and about what we love. We strive for open dialogue and to understand our differences as well as our shared beliefs.

We are also an opportunity. We spend time together to create memories and experiences that are unique to our location in historic Philadelphia. We connect students from around the city with one another through the shared St. Peter’s experience. We help prepare our students for what lies ahead, and we foster a sense of connection with the world around them. We want them to be ready for whatever the future might hold.

Our School and its community have undergone some changes this past year: my transition to the Head of School role, the renovation of the Blum Library, creation of our new full time School Counselor position, development of new classrooms and updated courses, and welcoming of new members to our community. We also took time to reflect on the things we have done that have made St. Peter’s what it is today. Developing new programs and enhancing what we already do is an ongoing pursuit. However, doing so while honoring the traditions of the School’s past remains a challenge. The School’s identity is clearer now and we are defining our vision for the next generation of St. Peter’s students.

Our first Head of School, Caroline Seamans stated in 1970, “St. Peter’s belongs to its children, and to their parents. This belonging marks the unique character and strength of the School.” I am thrilled to be the sixth Head of School of St. Peter’s and I, too, look forward to fulfilling Ms. Seamans’ vision of belonging for our students and families. I hope you join us in our pursuit and participate in our Annual Fund.

Warmly,

Matthew Evans, Head of School

Red Door Society

In 2018-2019, we will be forming the Red Door Society to recognize our most loyal donors: those who have made a planned gift or who have given 15 or more gifts in their lifetime. We are excited to honor their commitment to the mission of SPS with this special recognition.

Faculty Campaign Project

The faculty and staff of St. Peter’s School recognized the need for an auxiliary funding source that could be used to cover the cost of student trips and experiences not fully covered by tuition. They unanimously voted to create a Student Activities fund and gave over $7,300 in support of this priority, a testament to the generous spirit and thoughtfulness of our employees when it comes to creating learning experiences for our students. We also had faculty and staff contribute over $2,800 to the Faculty and Staff Scholarship Fund, which was created in the previous year. Once again, we are proud to report that we had 100% participation by our faculty and staff in the Annual Fund campaign.

EITC/OSTC Program

In Spring 2018, we were ecstatic to learn that two current parents would be donating $190,000 in partnership with Business Leadership Organized for Catholic Schools (BLOCS) and the Pennsylvania-based Education Improvement Tax Credit and Opportunity Scholarship Tax Credit (EITC/OSTC) program. The EITC/OSTC funds are earmarked for tuition assistance and we are currently using those funds to offer assistance to eighteen students in the 2018-2019 school year. In a school of our size, the impact of these funds on our ability to offer a St. Peter’s School education to more families cannot be overstated. We remain extraordinarily grateful to those families who have chosen to support SPS through this unique program.

As background, SPS is an eligible scholarship organization, which means that we can receive funds from either EITC or OSTC, where Pennsylvania businesses owners can opt to pay a portion of their business taxes toward a scholarship programs at qualified schools of their choosing. OSTC funds are designated more directly for students coming from failing school catchments. For business owners, the process is simple: businesses select a school that they would like to support and fill out a short online application to be considered for the EITC/OSTC programs. SPS is committed to finding more donors to help us maximize our funding from these important streams in order to help bring talented students into our community. For more information, please contact Clare Dych at [email protected].

Class of 2018 Gift

The Eighth Grade Class Gift is a student run effort, in conjunction with the Advancement Office, to raise funds to benefit future students. The purpose of the Eighth Grade Class Gift is to generate school spirit and pride, and to develop a culture of giving back to St. Peter’s School.

The Class of 2018 contributed the proceeds of their fundraising activities, including soft pretzel sales, to the purchase of a new kiln for the art program.

Did you know that you can support St. Peter’s School

through an estate gift or planned giving?

There are many planned giving vehicles that can be used to make a contribution, including bequests, trusts, and gifts of property or stock. Planned giving can provide significant resources for SPS while also helping you achieve your personal tax and income goals. A planned gift can be as simple as a small monthly recurring gift automatically made online using your credit card or a more complex combination of cash and assets. We are happy to help you match your desire to give with the projects and programs that most benefit the School.

You may also be eligible for matching gifts from your employer for gifts made today, even if you are retired from the company. Matching gifts allow you to double or even triple the value of your contribution at no cost to you and securing them is often as simple as filling out a short form. Contact your company’s human resources division to see if they offer a match for your charitable contributions.

In 2018-2019, we will be introducing a planned and loyalty giving society at SPS called the Red Door Society. Red Door Society members are those donors who have made a planned gift or those who have given 15 or more gifts in their lifetime. We hope to recognize their loyalty and generosity to the School with this special honor.
