Annual Report

2

The St. Peter’s School 2019-2020 Annual Report honors alumni, parents, grandparents, faculty, staff, and friends whose generosity enables our students to fulfill their potential. Distributing this report in an online format where possible enables SPS to be a good steward of your gifts and to reduce the impact on the environment, eliminating production and mailing costs. This report catalogs the dedication and devotion of our community in turning shared goals and aspirations into reality though gifts received between July 1, 2019 and June 30, 2020.

Every effort has been made to ensure the accuracy of the information and listing in this report. Please accept our sincere apologies if any errors or omissions have been made. Please bring oversights to the attention of the Director of Advancement, Clare Dych at [email protected].

Letter from the Head of School

Dear SPS Community:

This past year was unusual in so many ways. In mid-March we found ourselves away from the comforts of the school and learning in a new way for the very first time. Our students and teachers shifted effortlessly into a remote environment where our students learned from home, via their devices, amid our country’s pandemic. We have learned a lot this year, about ourselves and our community. We also learned, despite the Coronavirus, that our community is strong. Supporting one another, engaging in new forms on socialization and communication, and thriving as we ended our year with a “virtual” Graduation ceremony celebrating the accomplishments of the class of 2020.

St. Peter’s has a long tradition of philanthropy that began when Caroline Seamans led the School in the late 1960’s. Thanks to the generous support of donors like you, the school has been able to advance its mission of “honoring the richness of childhood” for over six decades. We continue to place value on the importance of childhood and celebrating each milestone.

Please take some time to review this report and recognize how many individuals contribute to St. Peter’s and how many people it takes for us to be successful. We have a long year ahead and we will need the support and contributions of us all to meet these unique challenges. We are excited about the opportunity we have to meaningfully educate these children in a way that is consistent with our vision and mission, while the world around us manages this pandemic.

Thank you for all you have done to support St. Peter’s this year and for all you continue to do to help us meet our goals, on behalf of our students in the years to come.

Onward,

Matt Evans Head of School

The 2019-2020 school year began like so many others before it, with excited children rushing into the building to learn and be with their friends. However, the year ended in a way none of us could have imagined, with the COVID-19 pandemic forcing the closure of the school building and a transition to distance learning. We experienced many firsts, including Zoom classes for all of our students, and virtual events. It is safe to say that 2020 is a year for the history books.

Our students quickly adapted to distance learning, using a variety of platforms to stay connected with their teachers and classmates. We then launched out first ever Virtual Camp with a “Camp in a Box” supply box that campers could pick up from school to supplement their digital experience. It was a huge success and provided great entertainment for our students as they quarantined at home.

While this year looks different, we look forward to returning to our many traditions when it is safe to do so. Click here to peek at our A to Z of SPS booklet, and reminisce about all the parts of SPS that you love and remember.

Students in Mrs. Andrews’ class received a “Flat Stanley” style cutout of their teacher and documented their quarantine adventures with “Flat Mrs. Andrews.”

We raised $146,399 from 260 gifts and 225 donors. Our parent participation reached 54%. There was 100% participation from our Board Members and 91% participation by Faculty & Staff in the Annual Fund drive.

The gifts received were put to immediate good use in purchasing necessary sanitation supplies and PPE plus making modifications to our building to help us safely reopen. Gifts were also used to provide our faculty with cutting edge professional development in the areas of virtual and blended learning along with racial justice and anti-bias education.

We had many new donors, donors who gave more than once and donors who gave above and beyond their typical gift. We raised over $25,000 in the month of June alone. Our team is extremely grateful to you, our SPS families, for choosing us despite the uncertainty in the world. As with all fundraising efforts, our numbers only tell a portion of the story.

We also added two new members to our Red Door Society, which recognizes those who have reached the milestone of 15 or more gifts to SPS, or a planned gift. It is our pleasure to continue to steward and grow this special group of donors.

Finally, our EITC/OSTC program has continued to see steady growth. To date, $222,500 has been committed for the 2020-2021 school year, and $115,500 has been committed for the 2021-2022 school year based on projected two-year commitments. We added two new donors to the program this year and are grateful for this avenue of support as families request additional aid to return to SPS.

Thank you does not seem adequate for the gratitude we feel for your support at this critical juncture. None of our work would be possible without your contributions and energy. Together, we will get through these challenging times!

In October 2019, over twenty members of the Red Door Society, a special group of donors who have made 15+ gifts or a planned gift to SPS, gathered in the Alumni Theater for a breakfast to recognize their loyalty and generosity to the School. Memories of years gone by were shared, old friends reconnected, and so much more. We hope to continue the breakfast tradition for years to come. We would like to recognize the two new alumni parent members we added to the Red Door Society this year, Marjorie Snelling P’99 and Carolyn Crawford P’78. Thank you for joining this special group!

EITC/OSTC ProgramIn 2019-2020, we were extremely fortunate to receive $205,860 in EITC/OSTC funds from our continued partnership with our donors and Business Leadership Organized for Catholic Schools (BLOCS). The Pennsylvania-based Education Improvement Tax Credit and Opportunity Scholarship Tax Credit (EITC/OSTC) programs provide funds that are earmarked for tuition assistance. We used those funds to offer assistance to 26 students in the 2019-2020 school year. In a school of our size, the impact of these funds on our ability to offer a St. Peter’s School education to more families cannot be overstated. We remain extraordinarily grateful to those families who have chosen to support SPS through this unique program.

As background, SPS is an eligible scholarship organization, which means that we can receive funds from either EITC or OSTC, where Pennsylvania businesses owners can opt to pay a portion of their business taxes toward a scholarship programs at qualified schools of their choosing. OSTC funds are earmarked more directly for students coming from failing school catchments. For business owners and qualified individual taxpayers, the process is simple: businesses select a school that they would like to support and fill out a short online application to be considered for the EITC/OSTC programs. SPS is committed to finding more donors to help us maximize our funding from these important streams in order to help bring talented students into our community. For more information, please contact Clare Dych at [email protected].

Auction 2020: Celebrate the Night in Black and White

The 2020 St. Peter’s School Auction pivoted adeptly to an online format in light of COVID-19. We raised over $48,281 through a combination of online item sales and a virtual paddle raise. Our initial project was to be a renovation of Wiggins Field, but we quickly pivoted to providing aid for St. Peter’s families in need when COVID-19 struck. While we were disappointed to not be able to gather in person, we were very excited to raise a digital toast to mark the celebration. Thank you so much to all of our sponsors and donors for making the event a success with your generous contributions.

Class of 2020 Gift

The Eighth Grade Class Gift is a student run effort, in conjunction with the Advancement Office, to raise funds to benefit future students. The purpose of the Eighth Grade Class Gift is to generate school spirit and pride, and to develop a culture of giving back to St. Peter’s School.

The Class of 2020 is proud to donate a new bench cushion for the parlor bench, where they enjoyed spending lots of time socializing while waiting for buses, field trips, or class transitions. The cushion will have easy-to-sanitize fabric to both brighten up the parlor and ensure cleanliness for our students, staff and visitors.

Become a member of our Red Door Society by making a planned gift to St. Peter’s School today. We are proud to recognize all of our planned giving donors in our Red Door Society. We would like our community to know that there are many planned giving vehicles that can be used to make a contribution, including bequests, trusts, and gifts of property or stock. Planned giving can provide significant resources for SPS while also helping you achieve your personal tax and income goals. A planned gift can be as simple as a small monthly recurring gift automatically made online using your credit card or a more complex combination of cash and assets. We are happy to help you match your desire to give with the projects and programs that most benefit the School.

You may also be eligible for matching gifts from your employer for gifts made today, even if you are retired from the company. Matching gifts allow you to double or even triple the value of your contribution at no cost to you and securing them is often as simple as filling out a short form. Contact your company’s human resources division to see if they offer a match for your charitable contributions.

For more information on planned giving, matching gifts, and other gift vehicles, please contact the Office of Advancement at 215.925.3963 x405.
