C02 VISIT THE CITY
On Friday the 10th of November our class went on an excursion into the Adelaide CBD. When we arrived we had some recess near the army barracks and most of the students rolled down the hills repeatedly. Our first visit was to the migration museum. We looked in all the different rooms. There was a special exhibition about Aboriginal culture that had photos and jewellery. In the other rooms there was information about people migrating to South Australia on various boats. There were rats, sand, things they brought over from their home country and clothing. It also talked about life on the boats and the ceremonies that occurred on them. There was also a test to show whether you would be accepted as an Australian citizen. The second part we saw was the Centre of Democracy. We learnt about voting, special people and their contribution to our government. There was also information about Governor Gawler and the settlement of Adelaide. We also went into another exhibit about Woomera and the space race. In the afternoon the Year 7s went to the museum and went into the Egyptian room to look at how the Egyptian people lived. The Year 6s went on a walking tour of North Terrace looking at how things had changed over time. We used old photos to look at the difference over time. Although it was a warm day we all learnt something. By Jess, Rosana, Maddie, Amy, Cameron and Caitlin.

CIVICS & SERVICE
HEALTHY LIVING COMMITTEE
The teachers and students in B07 and D06 worked together as part of the Healthy Living community to spread awareness of the importance of sleep. The Sleep Health Foundation recommends:
A 4-5 year old child needs 10-12 hours of sleep a night. A 6-12 year old child needs between 9-11 hours of sleep a night.
To ensure children get good quality and quantity of sleep, it is important that they learn to relax. Lunchtime sessions were held for students on meditation, yoga and zen colouring. It was excellent to see so many students engage so well with these calming and nurturing activities. Did you know that without enough sleep:
· We are less able to solve problems and behave well. · We are less able to focus, remember and learn. · We are more likely to be sad, angry or moody. · We are more likely to be sick or clumsy.
WELCOME COMMITTEE The Welcome Committee have been making up our special bags for new students. The latest addition included pens and handmade bookmarks created by E01 and E02. RECYCLING COMMITTEE
Thanks to all who placed their cans in our designated recycling bins on Sports Day. $130.00 was raised and has been put towards purchasing items for Backpacks 4SA Kids. We have raised over $500.00 so far for this cause. To find out more about Backpacks 4SA Kids visit http://backpacks4sakids.org/
Do you have any old DVDs that your family no longer watch? Backpacks 4SA Kids would love to have them to include in the backpacks that they make up for kids who find themselves unable to stay in their own homes. Sometimes this means that they are in foster care, a shelter or refuge. It doesn’t matter if the DVDs have been well loved, they will be gladly accepted and included in backpacks for children to watch and enjoy. G and PG rated original DVDs in original cases only please. Donations can be left at the Front Office or delivered to Mrs Roberts in E08, Mrs Menz in E07 or Ms Mansfield in C06.

RESOURCE CENTRE NEWS
We have had a fabulous year in the library with
another successful Premier’s Reading Challenge effort
interactive Book Week displays “Escape to Everywhere”
Scholastic Book Fair that raised over $2300 for new lunchtime activities
continued fundraising through Scholastic Book Club
Australian Reading Hour twilight reading in the library
National Simultaneous Reading time “The Cow Tripped over the Moon”
Special thanks to our Resource Centre Civics & Services classes G05 & E04 for
helping keep us tidy every day, selecting books for our collection and doing
special jobs throughout the year. Sincere thanks to our volunteer parents, the
Scholastic Sisters, who have once again given their time and energy selflessly in
processing all the Scholastic Book Club orders. Their support and your orders
have earned our library rewards of $2000 worth of learning resources and books
for your children.
Premier’s Reading Challenge awards will be distributed soon, acknowledging
the consistent reading efforts of our children. This annual program
encourages all school aged children to persist in reading books for pleasure
and learning, an important lifelong skills. While the Resource Centre will
close soon it is a great time for your children to access the Playford Library
Service at either the Elizabeth Civic Centre or the Stretton Centre at Munno
Para West. Membership is free and they offer fabulous holiday activities,
along with thousands of print and ebooks to keep reading alive!
Our library will be making some changes to the shelving units in the last few weeks of term so we need to have all
books returned now. Overdue notes are delivered to classes each Thursday with final notices (orange) detailing
replacement cost or donation options for lost books. Please help your child remember to return any outstanding
library books. We look forward to unveiling the changes that will make it easier for the children to find what they are
interested in and need for their learning. We appreciate your support.
