From the Principal…
Dear Families,
While writing this and looking at the calendar it is hard to believe we are nearly half
way through Term 3! Our school continues to be a busy place with a large variety of
programs and ‘extra’ curricula activities at all levels. Children have been busily
occupied this week with:
District athletics training
ICAS Mathematics testing
Level 1 & 2 swimming
Level 5 & 6 Changes program
Foundation – Flying Bookworm
Whole school assembly - Friday
All these taking place alongside our regular classroom programs and routines.
Hopefully as the weather warms up and we move towards the end of winter the
coughs, colds and sniffles that have affected lots of our children and teachers will
end. PLEASE remember that when your child returns to school after an illness
we require that a note explaining the absence is handed to the classroom
teacher. Please note, you DO NOT need to phone the school to report an
absence.
French Poetry
‘Bravo’! Congratulations to all those children who participated in our French poetry
reading competition with Madame Mullany last Thursday. This included all our Level
5 and 6 children, and many children from Level 3 and 4 who chose to learn and
recite the poem. The standard of presentations, including expression, voice
projection and intonation, were all excellent! (I can attest to this as the poetry
readings took place all day in the interview room opposite my office)! Thank you to
Madame Mullany who presented our children with this wonderful opportunity and to
our French Leaders, Anthony and Alex, who assisted commendably on the day.
Kidproof – Protecting Kids Online
This is advance notice to place a special note in your diary pertaining to our
Kidproof - Protecting Kids Online program to be held in the school hall on Thursday,
October 15th. Information technology is by far the most common influence among
young people. Deepdene is partnering with Kidproof to present a seminar providing
parents with practical, easy to use ways to talk to children about internet behaviour
and ways to keep safe. This is a particularly relevant, important and informative
session which is being offered to the school community. A flier advertising this
important parent presentation will be coming home shortly.
Prep / Foundation 2016 Enrolment
If you are currently a member of the school community and have a child ready to
commence school next year please call into the office to book a Foundation
enrolment meeting time as soon as possible if you have not already.

At the end of the AFL home and away season, the top eight teams will be given the chance to play in the finals.
Every team hopes to make it into the Grand Final and, ultimately, win the flag.
The structure of the finals is as follows:
Once the top eight teams are decided at the end of the home and away season, choose one team and track
its possible road to the Grand Final. Represent the journey on a tree diagram.

A Busy Term In Music
Fêtes de la Musique
Once again many students have put their names down to perform on the ‘Fêtes de la Musique’ festival day. It is encouraging to find duets and quartets presenting as well as soloists. Many students are asking for time in the Music room or music foyer to practice for this event. We will present the final larger group items in the Centenary Hall at the end of our Parisian adventure followed by a croissant or two.
Jazz Group
The Jazz Group will perform at the Uniting Church Centenary Concert on Sunday 6th of September at 2pm. The students are working hard to master new material as well as well known favourites for this concert.
Festival Singers – Making connections
Having performed at the Trinity Music Festival, the Festival Singers are busy once again learning new material to present at the Eva Tilley Aged Care Memorial Home on the last Monday of Term Three.
We value this program as it encourages students to present to an audience other than their peers. At the end of the presentation students are encouraged to speak with the residents in a formal ‘meet and greet’ session. Students prepare cards to give to the residents as well as discussing conversation topics to have ready in case they need them during their talk time. The residents value this program as some do not receive visitors often. They love the cards the students leave with them along with the invitation to visit the school in Term Four.
The program is a reciprocal arrangement in that the Festival Singers host an afternoon tea and musical soiree at Deepdene.

SCHOOL NEWS
Last Friday on August 7th the selected Grade 3 and 4
boys and girls involved in Hoop Time set off to Nunawading Basketball Stadium to participate
in the annual tournament. The students had multiple training sessions prior to the event and
were extremely positive and confident heading into the tournament.
The boys’ team, coached by Cath Cran, were given a tough draw for the day. However despite
no victories on the scoreboard, it was quite clear this result did not reflect the day entirely. As
expected from students of Deepdene Primary School, the boys stayed extremely positive and
competitive with the opposition, and played with extraordinary courage. They displayed
exceptional sportsmanship towards each other, their opponents, the referees, and of course Cath. Although not much
luck with the points, the boys had a blast on the day and will certainly be back next year to have another crack!
The girls’ team, coached by Darren Patel, was a slightly different story. They won 4 out of the 5 games played and
through exceptional teamwork, courage and will, came out victorious in the grand final! This means that the girls’ team
now moves on to the regional championships! As with the boys, all players on the girls’ team showed outstanding
sportsmanship and respect all round and played with an utmost positive attitude. They had a great time competing on
the day and we wish them and Darren all the best when competing in the regional championships!
A huge thankyou to Cath Cran and Darren Patel for not just coaching the Grade 3 and 4 boys’ and girls’ teams but also
attending and assisting with running the training sessions. It was truly a great experience for the students involved. Also
a huge thankyou to the parents who offered to drive and who actually drove the students to the tournament and helped
out with the day. Overall, a terrific day at Hoop Time!

Social Night Success
Thank you all for creating a wonderful evening on
Friday night! A terrific night was had by all. I had
the chance to meet lots of Deepdene parents
and hope you also took the opportunity to
introduce yourself to some unknown
faces. Hellenic Republic was the perfect venue.
Lots of parents caught the 109 tram allowing
them to partake of the delicious food and
beverages and return home safely at the end of
the night.
The biggest thank you must go to Marcela
Miranda, who organised the entire event. The
evening was a tremendous success with the raffle
raising a whopping $1,000 for the PA. This is
entirely due to Marcela’s hard work in planning
and promoting the event, and securing great
raffle prizes from our school community and
beyond. Thank you Marcela! If you missed the
Social Night, Marcela has also very kindly taken
on responsibility for this years’ Ladies Lunch,
which will be an event not to be missed.

Medical Action Plans
It is really important that if your child requires an Asthma pump/ Ventolin/Epipen that we have a copy of a current plan that is signed by your doctor as this is just as important as the medication itself. Please ensure that you provide us with the correct documentation and thank you to the parents who have already done so.
