From the Principal…

Dear Families,

Yet another busy week around the school! Last week and this week we have had,

and will have, the following ‘extra curricula’ activities;

Level 5 bike education

Level 6 clubs activities

Level 6 assembly preparations

Extension education solar boat challenge

District athletics sports

Junior and senior chess tournaments

Level 5 & 6 ‘Kidproof’ sessions

Parent ‘Kidproof’ (cybersafety) information evening

This Friday night, October 23rd Diary of a Wimpy Kid will be screening for our Level

3, 4, 5 and 6 children. A big thank you to our hard working and supportive Parents’

Association who have raised the funds to allow for the supply and installation of the

projector and screen in the Centenary Hall.

Congratulations to all our chess players and chess teams! Deepdene has a number

of children who have qualified to play in one or more of the various State Chess

Finals being conducted this term. Thank you to those parents who have attended

and transported children to these tournaments. Special thanks to Laurelee who has

been instrumental in sourcing a number of tournaments and assisting with

registration and organisation. We are continuing to develop a number of strong and

committed chess teams and look forward to hearing of further tournament results

during Term 4.

A reminder to all families that Kim and myself are on yard duty from 8.45am each

morning before school and until 3.45pm each afternoon after school. Children

should not be dropped off or left unsupervised in the school yard before or after

these times. Now that the weather is on the improve we find that many children

are staying in the schoolyard to play after 3.45pm. While some children are with

parents many are unsupervised and this creates concern with duty of care and

children’s safety. We do request that all families leave the school grounds by

3.45pm each afternoon so we can ensure children are safe and supervised. Please

note that the bell will ring at 3.45pm each afternoon and families will be asked

to leave the school grounds. Any children who have not been collected by

safety issues and we value support in managing this.

School Planning / Enrolments 2016

As detailed planning for 2016 is now well underway, it is essential that the school is

notified of any student in Levels Foundation – Level 5 who is not intending to return

to Deepdene Primary School in 2016. I also remind parents with a Foundation aged

child for 2016 who have not yet enrolled, to do so as a matter of urgency.

SCHOOL NEWS

Mathematics is everywhere! We want to help you continue your mathematical skills over the next few weeks by making

something delicious and healthy. That’s right… Welcome to Mathsterchef, where you and your parents could choose to

make the following recipe and cook up a storm whilst using mathematics.

Parents, please be aware that some of these recipes may contain ingredients which your child may not be able to

consume due to allergies. Please use your discretion and change any ingredients to suit your child’s and family dietary

needs. You may also like to change ingredients according to your family’s individual tastes.

The following recipes are to be made under adult supervision.

These recipes were found on the following website - http://www.taste.com.au and there are thousands more.

Method

Step 1 Sift flour into a large bowl. Season with salt and pepper. Stir until well combined. Make a well in the centre.

Step 2 Whisk buttermilk and eggs in a jug. Add to flour mixture with corn kernels, creamed corn and chives. Using a large metal spoon, gently fold ingredients together until combined (don't overmix).

Step 3 Preheat oven to 150°C. Heat a non-stick frying pan over medium heat. When hot, remove from heat. Spray with oil. Return frying pan to heat. Add heaped tablespoonfuls of mixture, 3 at a time. Use a knife to spread to 8cm (diameter) rounds.

Step 4 Cook for 2 minutes or until bubbles appear on surface. Turn. Cook for a further 2 minutes or until fritters are firm to the touch. Keep warm in oven while cooking remaining fritters. Place onto plates. Top with chives. Serve with chutney.

Corn fritters These simple corn fritters are sure to find favour with the kids and the adults.

New Class Changeover

…continued from page 1.

Term Dates 2016 Term 1

Friday 29 January (L1 - L6) Monday 1 February (Foundation)

- 24 March

Term 2 11 April - 24 June

Term 3 11 July - 16 September

Term 4 3 October - 20 December

Remember all new Foundation enrolments require a copy of your child’s

Immunisation and Birth Certificates as part of the enrolment process. In some cases

you may need to provide a passport, for example, if enrolling from overseas for the

first time in an Australian school.

If your son or daughter will NOT be returning to the school next year please

complete the attached notice and return to the school office as soon as possible.

Thank you to those families who have already notified the school of changes in their

school placement for 2016. The planning process associated with the development

of class structures and class groups also includes an opportunity for parents to

contribute relevant information pertaining to the placement of their children for

the following school year. It is not a “pick your class teacher or pick your class

group” option but rather it is an opportunity for you to provide any relevant social,

emotional and educational information that you would like the school to take into

account when the class groups are being formed.

The development of class structures and class groups is quite a complex activity

carried out each year, and every effort is made to fully satisfy the following

criteria:

Gender Balance

Mixed ability groups

Social groups

Effective class sizes and teaching teams

Please note that children are not asked to nominate friends for grouping purposes.

Friendship groups are taken into account but we also endeavour to provide the

children with the opportunity to extend friendship groups each year. If you have

any relevant information that you would like taken into consideration for 2016

please submit this information to me in writing by Friday, 6th November.

Unfortunately it is not always possible to satisfy all requests but every effort is

made to take into account as many different considerations as possible. Please do

not assume that we can also recall information that has been submitted in previous

years. Each year is a new scenario and as such the information gathering is also an

important part of our annual planning processes.

Pupil Free Day

A reminder to all school families that Monday, November 2nd is a pupil free day.

(Please note this is the Monday of Melbourne Cup weekend). Teachers will be

commencing the task of moderating children’s work samples, completing

assessments and writing the end of year student reports.

Our newsletter hopes to go paperless next year! Make sure you have subscribed to receive a reminder email saying that the current newsletter is now available.

Bring Your Own Device

(BYOD) - Parent Survey

Deepdene Primary is investigating the introduction of a

BYOD (Bring your own Device) program. BYOD is where

students are allowed to bring their personal devices (eg iPad,

Tablet) to school and use them with the school wireless

network. There is a lot to consider when implementing a

BYOD program and we must determine whether it is the right move for our school. We need your input and have

developed a survey for you to complete - the results will guide us as to which direction to take.

To participate in the survey, please click on the following link:

BYOD - Parent Survey(http://goo.gl/forms/SJ7MLofWdZ)

A link to the survey is also available from the school website. The survey will remain open until the end of October.

Many thanks for your valuable feedback.

PA FAMILY MOVIE NIGHT A gigantic THANK YOU to Irene Ntontis for organising the first Deepdene Primary Family Movie Night last

Friday. A great night was had by all and we are looking forward to this week’s Movie Night for our upper year

level students. Thank you also to all the parents who assisted on the door, ticket sales, pizza stall and candy

bar.

CRAZY CAMEL CARDS AND CALENDAR Order forms for the cards and calendars were due back early this week, if you discover yours crumpled in the

bottom of the school bag please get it back asap as we can still accept late orders.

NOVEMBER MEETING - DATE CHANGE

As mentioned in the newsletter last week, PA are facing a turnover of office holders for 2016 and our small but

dynamic group are severely challenged with volunteer fatigue. PA is currently in crisis and if we do not receive

a group of new volunteers and office holders for 2016, all the community events your family look forward to will

not be scheduled. Our school community and our children will miss out on these events:

Icy pole Fridays

Hot Cross Buns

Footy Pie Day

Movie Nights

Big Day Out

Mothers’ and Fathers’ Day Stall

Lap-a-thon

Disco

Fête de la Musique Croissants

Parent Social Nights

Ladies Lunch

Christmas Chocolate Stall

In an effort to attract new committee members the November PA meeting will be held on Thursday 12th

November at 7.00pm in the school staff room. If you are interested in supporting the PA in 2016 but are

unable to attend this meeting please email PA at [email protected]
