Nosce Te Ipsum End of Academic Year Bulletin 14th July 2017 Dear Parents, What an amazing end to the term it has been. There have been so many special school events and the term concluding with the end of term Awards assembly. I would like to congratulate the whole school community on their personal achievements over the year and to thank everyone for their hard work and positive approach ‘trying their best in everything they do’. This outlook really contributes to making our school a very creative and special community for everyone. The end of the academic year is always a special time as we prepare the children for their next phase of learning, be it a new class at Deepdene in September or the transitional leap at the end of their time in the Prep phase. Pupils across all year groups have now enjoyed time in their new classrooms with their new class teachers getting to know their new learning environment. What an exciting time! Last Friday, I accompanied the Year 6 pupils and Mrs Croucher on their leaver’s day out. It even involved an impromptu performance of the choreographed scene from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang on the Brighton Band Stand. You can read more about the day later in the bulletin. It was a time for the class to celebrate the end of their Deepdene journey and to reflect on the times they shared together. It was a very special day and we all enjoyed the time we spent together. Some of our Year 6 pupils have been at the school since they were 6 months old, so as well as being a very exciting time for our pupils as they look forward to a new beginnings, it is also an emotional time. We will miss them all very dearly but wish them all the very best of luck and good wishes for the future. I hope you enjoy the final bulletin of the academic year and would like to wish each and every one of you a very happy and safe summer holiday. With best wishes, Elizabeth Brown Headteacher GOODBYE YEAR 6

End of Academic Year Bulletin 14th July 2017

Dear Parents, What an amazing end to the term it has been.

With best wishes, Elizabeth BrownHeadteacher

Deepdene Parent Association:It was a fabulous evening at the second annual Deepdene Parents Association BBQ & Disco. It was great to see so many parents, friends and children enjoying themselves together and generating a truly uplifting atmosphere! The evening kicked off with a spectacular performance by our Year 6 Leavers and a special showcase of our Deepdene talent. And what a special evening it was with the Regional ISA Co-ordinator, Susan Webb, joining us for our ISA celebration and the unveiling of our new ISA plaque.

This was our first big DPA fundraiser for our new Project Playground initiative and with your support, we successfully raised over £430.

We would like to thank all of you who joined us for the event and especially those who ran the stalls, flipped the burgers and sausages, and quenched our thirst throughout the evening. And we would like to extend a special DPA thanks to Selin Ucdogan’s parents, Sevda and Achmet - owners of GFC, who donated the burgers; Nina and Isabella Kreel’s parents, Brian and Jenny, for the sausages; Gill, our school cook for assistance in the kitchen; Curiosity Kitchen & Deli for use of their grill; and Deepdene School for allowing us to use the school for the event.

We will have more DPA news in September and welcome any support to DPA and fundraising suggestions. Enjoy your Summer!Deepdene Parents Association

preparations in Year 1, based on a little house left abandoned by a mysterious, tiny inhabitant for the children to peer into. This was our setting and the children have written some super stories, about which they had very clear ideas.Year 1 have been beginning to think about the end of their days in this year group and have even tackled Year 2 maths questions, just to see what lies ahead. There is not one child who objected to having a go, which bodes so well for them.

Year 1 have consistently acquired merits in PE this half term for good ball and team-work skills and are very proud of themselves. They are continuing to work on their castle constructions which are taking shape, and we are sure you are looking forward to these coming home! We have finished recording our weather findings in Science, and we noted that until Wednesday, there was no rainfall whatsoever. Disappointing and yet fortuitous, in equal proportions! In RE we read a story from the Bible about a man who finds a treasure hidden in a field and gives all he has to obtain it. It drew out some interesting thoughts on belief in God and questions about what God may value.

In our reading times, there seems to have developed a keen interest in Dr Zeuss books, perhaps worth tapping into over the holidays. They have particularly enjoyed reading these out loud because of their poetic qualities.

It’s been a productive and varied term and the children have kept going strong to the very end. Well done all and may they enjoy a fabulous summer break. Year One Teaching Team

Year 2:I was hugely proud of all the children during the swimming gala. They impressed us all with their different strokes and their behaviour was amazing. Well done, Year 2!

For History we completed learning about Rosa Parks and discussed Racism in some depth. In ICT, the children all worked on creating their own PowerPoint presentations. They have learnt how to include pictures, information and even moving videos. They have enjoyed exploring the software and seeing what different effects they can apply to their presentations. In Maths, we played games this week and solved problems with numbers. In Literacy, we began to write our own stories based on the picture of the mysterious door. I’m very

Reception:Reception:The last 2 weeks of term have been so busy. We have learnt all about the seaside and how to keep ourselves safe in the sun by the three S’s ’Slip, Slap and Slop!’ The children have grown so much over the year and are very excited to be heading off to Year 1 next year. Have a lovely summer Reception and keep on reading! Mrs Stoner

Year 1:

The children have been finishing all kinds of work to round off the final term of Year 1. One of these has been the whole school writing task. There were a lot of exciting and intriguing

Page 4: GOODBYE YEAR 6 - Deepdene Prep School...2017/07/14  · performance at Roedean. Fantasmagorical was a hit! We have so many talented and hardworking pupils at Deepdene and all the children,

much looking forward to reading all of the stories! In PSHE, we discussed how to look after pets and the children we very excited to talk about their own pets. In RE, we looked at the Qu’ran, the prayer books that Muslim people read. The children were able to answer questions about this special book.

We look forward to seeing you all in September and wish you all a very happy summer holiday! Ms Rosen and Miss Stannard

Year 3:What an amazing, busy week. The children loved Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, and were all excited to perform in such a brilliant show. They all did so well remembering where and when they needed to be on stage. The Year 3 teaching team were very impressed! The children spent the rest of the week humming the songs.

In Maths we have completed our work on fractions and our final maths assessment and enjoyed a series of maths challenges in our final week of Year 3. In Literacy, we have completed our final writing assessment piece. The children all thought of wonderful ideas and it was a great pleasure to read their work and see how far they have come since arriving in Year 3. We have really enjoyed teaching you all, and hope everyone has a wonderful summer holiday. Well done for all your efforts this year! Year 3 Teaching Team

Year 4:The final few weeks for Year 4 have been busy ones indeed! Alongside coming to the end of their extensive learning in all Y4 curriculum subjects, the children have been enjoying a host of exciting activities, both on site and off.

Last Friday, the children completed and performed their class assembly to the school, which incorporated drama, ICT, some PSHE and lots of information about healthy eating and lifestyles. A great deal of hard work and enthusiasm went into the assembly and the children should be very proud of all their efforts.

It was a treat for the Y4s to experience an afternoon of Water Sports at Hove Lagoon recently, especially considering the hot weather we have been enjoying! Stand up paddle boarding and wakeboarding were a few of the activities the children tried and a lot of fun was had by all.

The children should also be congratulated on their amazing performance at Roedean.

Fantasmagorical was a hit! We have so many talented and hardworking pupils at Deepdene and all the children, including Y4, have done themselves proud.

It has been a real pleasure to teach Y4 and get to know all the children this year both academically and as part of the Y4 form class. We know they are going to make exemplary Year 5s.

Enjoy the holidays, everyone!Mrs Gann and Mrs Ash

Upper School NewsThe end of the academic year has certainly been packed full of events and activities in upper school and we have been thoroughly enjoying it. The Year 5 and 6 pupils have been making me beam with pride over the last few weeks both at our Sports Day and at the ISA launch celebration. The children represented Deepdene impeccably and how lovely it was so to see them perform so confidently in front of our entire school community at these events. It is incredible to see how far they have all come. The watersports afternoon at Hove Lagoon was another highlight, with pupils across upper school impressing with their sailing, wakeboarding and paddle boarding skills. The Year 6 pupils celebrated the end of their time at Deepdene in style, with a secret agent themed ‘Mission Impossible’ leavers’ day. After watching a mysterious video message from the

Times Table Challenge:We have come to our last times table challenge of the academic year. The children have worked incredibly hard to learn and improve their knowledge and speed of recall across the year and some children made the leap from the 50 question grid to the larger 77 question grid. Well done, everyone! Keep practising over the summer holiday.

The fastest time for the 50 question grid goes to Arthur, with a time of 4 minutes and 29 seconds and full marks. Well done! Next year, Arthur will be challenged to complete the 77 question grid.

The fastest time for the 77 question grid goes again to our reigning champion, Abraham. He achieved another great time of 2 minutes and 29 seconds. Very well done. Your goal next year is to complete your challenge in 2 minutes or less!

The most improved times go to Sid and Isolda this week. Sid improved his time by a brilliant 1 minute and 38 seconds and Isolda improved by 17 seconds. Great work, both of you!

Finally, I would like to mention Sid, Dexter and Isolda in the most improved score category this week. They improved by 10, 4 and 2 questions respectively. Excellent work!

head of the Deepdene Secret Agents Agency, the team headed out to complete a series of missions along the gloriously sunny seafront. This included the Year 6 agents taking on the challenge of booking their own lunch table at the Regency Restaurant, performing ‘Chitty Chitty Bang Bang’ on the Brighton bandstand and locating the perfect venue for an ice cream – and of course eating a cone of the delicious stuff! The highlight of the day was the hour spent at Escape Game, Brighton where both teams managed to solve riddles, codes and puzzles to escape their rooms just within the 60 second time limit. Phew!

I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate the Year 6 pupils on all of their wonderful achievements during their time at Deepdene and to thank all of their families for their support over the years. It is a happy time as I watch the children heading off to their bright futures, but it is also tinged with sadness as I find myself having to say goodbye to this fantastic group of boys and girls - I will miss them all so much. Good luck Year 6! You are simply the best! Mrs Croucher

FantasmagoricalYears 4, 5, and 6 put on an amazing production at Roedean last week of Fantasmagorical. Year 3 added just the right touch to make the show even more impressive. The singing, dancing and acting were well rehearsed and it certainly showed during the performances. Huge thanks to BStarz for putting together a stunning production and creating a lifelong memory for all of the pupils involved. Deepdene, as always, you were truly scrumptious.Mrs. Marshall
