Cornerstone is delighted to present a fresh new look for our exciting future. Our new logo, pictured here, is what you will now see adorning correspondence and signage – but it is much more than just a pretty image. Many years ago, our former ‘swoosh’ logo was created as a temporary stop-gap which held no meaning to the College at all. The implementation of a permanent replacement was delayed, but now it is timely for us to provide a new and fresh look that goes with us as we face our exciting future. Our intent was to have a logo that told a story about growth and nurture, and had embedded within it subtle messages of our foundation in Christ. It had to have meaning regarding our academic pursuits and the guidance we provide for our students. As such, the form of leaves, shaped to look like the cross and the points of a compass, has been presented as the new emblem of the College. The individual leaves that make up the image you see are like us – individuals – but they all have a part to play. It’s when they are brought together, in partnership and community, that we can truly see the heart of the College. It’s the cross, which is our cornerstone. This doesn’t change us. This doesn’t make us different than what we have been, but provides us with a visual reminder of what we are about and what is at the heart of Cornerstone. Each time we lay eyes upon this new logo, it can speak to us about our mission, and give us something tangible to use as a means of sharing who we are. I’m excited to be on this journey with each of you. Cornerstone is delighted to present a fresh new look for our

exciting future.

As such, the form of leaves, shaped to look like the cross and the points of a compass, has been presented

as the new emblem of the College.

The individual leaves that make up the image you see are like us – individuals – but they all have a part to play. It’s

when they are brought together, in partnership and community, that we can truly see the heart of the College.

Around the CollegeiPadsYear 5 and 6 students with iPads are being encouraged to keep them in their bags when they are at the bus stop, as concerns have been raised about the safety of these expensive items. We have communicated this to students at school but would encourage some parental input into this as well. It is after school, so we cannot mandate this issue, but the reality is that loss or damage is going to occur if not implemented. That’s something we all want to avoid!

SwimmingPrimary swimming lessons are commencing on May 18th for the Primary school students (Year 1-6). Students who are not participating are still required to walk down with their classmates during the lesson times. If you have any concerns with this, please contact the College.

If your child is sick and incapable of walking the distance, please do not send them to school.

Dunsborough Ground BreakingWe are about to break the ground at Dunsborough, and building will commence in the next few weeks. We will be encouraging everyone to be part of the formalities on Sunday May 24th, when we will prayerfully and ceremonially launch this new venture. The program is still to be advised and we will ensure it is widely advertised ahead of time. This will be on site in Cornerstone Way, Dunsborough. Please note that this date has changed from when previously advertised. Make sure you note the 24th down.

BookfairBook fair will be running this term, commencing Wednesday 27th May

through to Wednesday 3rd June (weeks 6 and 7). This is a great event which promotes the joy of reading and the children really love the opportunity to buy books. It can become quite busy in the library at this time so the library team is looking for some volunteers who would be happy to assist after school to 4pm, and some in class times. To register your interest or availability please leave your name with someone in the library, or send a note to your classroom teacher. The library will be open to purchase books AFTER school or during clas allocated times.Thank you, and we look forward to partnering with you during this exciting event.

Too tired?According to international educational tests, sleep deprivation is a significant hidden factor in lowering student achievement. It is more of a problem in affluent countries, with sleep experts linking it to the use of mobile phones, I-pads, TVs and computers in the bedroom. So for good sleep, remove all electronic devices from your room and avoid looking at screens half an hour before going to bed. (Note: Children and teenagers need between 9-11 hours of sleep every night.)

CRUNCH AND SIP

Mum’s morning teaPre-PrimaryEach Year, Mrs Cameron, Mrs Reid, Mrs Clark and Mrs van Beek’s Pre-Primary Classes brings Mums on site to pamper them in preparation for Mother’s Day.Last Friday, a sea of Ladies were given the opportunity to have their fingernails painted, their feet washed and pampered, have their portrait painted or create a craft or gift with their children. We are incredibly grateful for the Mums connected with Cornerstone and value the way you build into your children’s lives and into our community as a result. We trust you all had a beautiful Mother’s Day celebration last Sunday.

Cows Create CareersThe Cows are Back in TownFor the past few years, the College has participated in the Dairy Australia Initiative, Cows Create Careers. This program sees two calves on campus for a few weeks, and gives some of our Middle School students the opportunity to care for them and have hands on learning about careers associated with the Dairy Industry. From Veterinarians through to Cheesemakers and Farming, the learning and research undertaken is invaluable. To top it off, a competition is associated with this program - one that has seen us take out the position of State Winners on many occasions. Let’s hope 2015 provides success again for Cornerstone.

Climbing TreesOur students have loved climbing trees, but unfortunately the trees have suffered. We have lost one paper bark tree because the bark has been stripped away, and a second paper bark has very little bark left. We love seeing kids climb but some students have been climbing too high. As their safety is paramount, we have started another talk with the children about which trees to climb and how high they should climb. Students will NOT be allowed to climb trees until it is very clear to them which trees they can climb and how high they can climb.

Primary Uniform ReminderParents are reminded that the Winter School uniform is in place now, and some parents may need a refresher. The uniform includes school socks and black leather lace-up shoes. Lackies, scrunchies, clips, headbands (1 solid colour red, black or white) are to have no added decorations. Dress lengths are to the knees. With jewellery, please make sure no bangles, anklets or rings are worn. Earrings are to be silver or gold studs or sleepers. Necklaces are also to be silver or gold and pendants no bigger than 2cm which need to be tucked into the shirt. Also make-up and nail polish are to be left at home!

Pebbles EnrolmentsParents of siblings wishing to enrol for Pebbles Semester 2, 2015 and/or Kindy 2016 should do so now. Please contact the Office to collect an enrolment form and return as soon as possible.

Muesli Box CollectionMrs Robinson would like to request that any parents willing to collect and donate muesli bar boxes and bring them into school would find her extremely happy! Her Year 7 and Year 8 students are making Bible bookshelves with the boxes. She will place a collection box outside the office. Please drop your contributions in there.

NAPLAN TestingIt is NAPLAN week, which unfortunately makes students often feel more stressed than they should be. We are asking for parental support in

keeping students as calm and rested as possible. For them to perform at their best, good amounts of sleep and rest and healthy meals and snacks all assist. We are aiming to keep things as ordered as we can for their testing, but really value the input that parents can make as well.

Visitors on CampusPlease remember, that if you are on campus that you need to be signed in.This is so that we can be assured of the safety of every one of our students by being aware of who is on site, as well as

for your own should an emergency arise whilst you are on the College grounds.

VolunteeringDon’t forget that there are so many ways you can partner with us in the education of your kids. From the library, to the canteen, and classroom assistance or carnivals. We just love having parents on site! If any grandparents wish to help, that’s fabulous too! For grandparents or members of the community they just require a Working With Children’s Card supplied - which we can help with if you need it. Come and join us!

You can Join into Scouts“Unplug your children from electronic games and turn them into 21st century adventurers by joining Scouts. 1st Cape Naturaliste Scout Group now has vacancies for boys and girls who are seeking fun and adventure, looking for a challenge, and want to make new friends. Cubs are for children aged between 8 & 11, Scouts are for children aged between 11 & 14 years, and Venturers are for 14 years plus. Parents are also welcome to join Scouts as adult volunteers.Contact Scout Leader Jenny Stark on 9755 6332 on how to join Cubs, Scouts and Venturers.”
