Remembrance Day: Tuesday 11 November 2014

The School will mark the centenary of World War 1 with the customary two services. Parents and friends of the School are very welcome at both.

At 08:40, Years 3-9 will assemble in the School Chapel prior to an Act of Remembrance at the Flagpole.

At 10:30, invited members of the local community will join Years 10-13 in the School Chapel. The speaker at this service will be Brigadier Roger Hood QVRM TD DL.

Chaplain’s 300 – Remembrance

From the 1840s on, gold fever dominated New Zealand, notably the West Coast of the South Island, and North Island towns such as Waihi. Many men, often immigrants, disappointed of instant riches, turned to mining a darker if less lucrative substance – coal. Little did they guess where these ventures would lead. Very early on in World War 1, the Allies appealed to Canada, Australia and New Zealand for miners to support war operations at the Front. The expertise of these ‘tunnellers’ was a major part of success against German trench warfare. If I do say so myself, the New Zealand contingent, many of them Maori, was particularly key. Reluctant and rebellious during their basic military training, the Kiwi tunnellers quickly proved to work three times faster than the German competition. They were also superb in training others to the same standard. Tunnellers worked famously beneath the town of Arras, and nearby. They would burrow long narrow openings beyond ‘No Man’s Land’ above, widening at the end to accommodate a cache of explosives. These would then kill the enemy above, directly, or through immense carbon monoxide poisoning produced by the explosions. Huge underground safe areas were also constructed for soldiers and civilians. At least one network possessed full electrical supply and lighting, even tramways. The work was dangerous. Long, intensive dusty stays underground with less than 18% oxygen alternated with short bursts of recovery in fresh air. Many died. With1918 over, many faced a lingering death through respiratory diseases. Marriages and families disintegrated, as women received partners completely altered by what they had seen and done. Suicides resulting from these operations continued into the 1930s. A century on, we are still digesting the unimaginable waste and devastation of 1914-1918. It was international in scale. It is appalling that countries and families tens of thousands of miles distant were shattered by these events. That Europe could within thirty years again destroy a vast number of young men and minds is shocking. The only positive aspect is that these matters have clearly not been set aside. Many young people in 2014 are very disposed to ponder them, and in so doing, refurbish our values and our future.

We will travel to the site by coach and during our time there we will receive a guided tour around the Egyptian Galleries and the Ancient Lives Exhibition. For more information on The British Museum please visit www.britishmuseum.org.uk The cost of the trip is £15.00 per child and all children will be provided with a school packed lunch. RAAS Football Match Reports

Merstham Primary 1 – 4 RAAS On Tuesday we played a football match vs. Merstham Primary School. Straight from kick off RAAS begun with mounted pressure on Merstham, resulting in a corner. As Leo crossed it in, Matthew was there to tap it in for a 1-0 lead. Shortly after Merstham had their first attempt on goal which Leo-John accidentally hand-balled in the box to give Merstham a penalty. As they took the penalty the ball rattled the crossbar. Nearing the end of the half, David booted the ball down to Alex who passed the ball to Matt who setup Leo for a 2-0 half time lead. As the second half started the opposition no.7 took a good shot which Barnaby cleared for a corner, which resulted in Merstham getting a goal back. When we took kick off we worked our way down to their defence when Leo played a ball over to Matthew to chip past their keeper for 3-1 to RAAS. The next goal came a matter of seconds later when Leo pelted into the top corner. A great team performance. Man of the Match: Matthew & Leo-John

By Matthew & Barnaby

Sandcross 3 – 1 RAAS On Friday we had a football match vs. Sandcross School. We lost 3-1 but we played the best that we could do. It started as their ref blew for kick off. Two minutes in Tommy gave a setup to Matthew who went around the keeper and missed an easy attempt. A couple of minutes later Tommy got another set up from Matthew who then hit the post. A strong start from RAAS. However, as their keeper launched the ball down the field a Sandcross player controlled it, shot and gave them a 1-0 lead. As we took kick off we gave it away and they played a great ball to our keeper who made a mistake and that made it 2-0. As the ref blew for half time our heads were high. We had our team talk with our manager and the second half began as Leo gave a throw in to Alex who passed to Tommy who gave it to Matthew to slot it past the keeper for 2-1. Then, as they took the kick off they went straight on the attack as we were off guard, Ishant cleared the danger, but they came back strongly and scored the final goal of the game. A disappointing result, but a great team performance. Man of the Match: Ishant Gurung
