Term 1 Week 5 24 February 2012
Kia Ora tatou katoa
Our term 1 inquiry is now underway and as mentioned in the last newsletter our focus is on how
our body works. As a whole staff we are trying to promote balanced lunchboxes and this means
the proportion of packaged food to home made food, sandwiches, fresh fruit, and healthy options.
We are seeking your assistance to see if we can achieve a far greater balanced lunchbox by the end
of the term.
When you’re packing the lunch box, try to include:
• Fruit
• Dairy – yoghurt and cheese are the easy choices here
• Protein – try to put a piece of ham on the sandwich, or wrap up a cooked chicken leg
• Carbohydrate – bread of course!
• Vegetables – carrot sticks or strips of red pepper are popular
•Water
Bread, in the form of a sandwich, is the most common lunch box food for kids. If your child is stuck
on having a sandwich each day but is sick of what you are giving them, try changing the type of
bread you put her vegemite on. There’s a range of breads that include:
• sliced bread (white, white high fibre, wholemeal, multigrain, rye)
• pita bread
• Lebanese bread
• bread rolls
• English muffins
• Bagels
Snack ideas
• Fresh fruit
• Tub of fruit in clear juice
• Dried fruit e.g. raisins or apricots
• Mini fruit kebabs make by inserting fresh fruit onto a skewer
• Vegetable sticks with dip
• Mixed natural nuts
• Yoghurt or dairy food but remember to keep chilled or freeze overnight
• Hard boiled eggs remember to keep chilled
Muesli bars make sure you look for ones, which are lower in sugar and fat and higher in fibre. Keep the muesli bars with
chocolate, for a treat.
•
Cheese sticks or slices remember to keep chilled• Air-popped popcorn or pretzels rather than chippies
• A small muffin packed with lots of fruit or vegetables
• Small can of creamed rice
• Plain biscuits e.g. ginger nut or wine biscuits
Students are so busy at the moment with the Seniors practicing for the Athletics day and the
uniors involved in the Sport Southland Move and Improve programme, staff have noticed many students still hungry. Please
pack some extra food as we have also changed our bell times to have a longer learning time in the mornings. This has
resulted in student learners eating more brain food snacks before interval.
Try involving your child in selecting and preparing the lunchbox. The closer the food is to the natural source
the better. Please also ensure that your child has a drink bottle every day, the days are still warm and
hydration is important. We look forward to an exciting term. Mr Tucker and I will be at Bannockburn next week on the year 6 Camp. Please contact Mrs Wheeler or
Emma, if you need anything during this week.

House Captain Leadership Course
Last Thursday the Salford House Captains attended
a Leadership Course at Adventure Southland. They
tackled some challenging physical activities that
pushed their limits.
As a group they learned skills that will enable them
to become better role models to other students.
Together they discussed the qualities of a good
leader, which they will put into practice at camp. It
was an exciting day that we hope will become an
annual event.
