    Senator Lamar Alexander Visits Museum

    Members of Tennessee Asso-

    ciation of Community Leader-

    ship (TACL), toured the Alex

    Haley Museum & Interpre-

    tive Center on Wednesday,

    October 13. The group of

    about 50 people, represent-

    ing leadership organizations

    across Tennessee, also par-

    ticipated in icebreaker activi-

    ties on the lawn of the mu-

    seum as the kickoff for theirregional conference, being

    held in nearby Ripley, TN.

    TACL is an organization de-

    veloped to enhance existing

    and create new Community

    Leadership programs.

    Wednesday, October 27, the

    Alex Haley Museum & Inter-

    pretive Center was host to

    longtime friend of Alex Haley,

    Senator Lamar Alexander, and

    a group of other Tennessee

    politicians, families, and

    friends. Included in the group

    was Mayor Bill Haslam, Sena-

    tor Bob Corker, Representative

    Craig Fitzhugh, County Mayor

    Rod Schuh, and HenningMayor Michael Bursey. After

    touring the museum and Inter-

    pretive Center, the group was

    treated to a presentation by

    Steve Redding, Michael Hagge,

    and Pam Hurley of the Eco-

    nomic Development Center at

    University of Memphis, re-

    garding plans for revitalization

    of the town of Henning.

    The Alex Haley Museum & Interpretive Centerwas one of the designated stops for the Missis-

    sippi River CorridorWhistle Stop Tour, Fri-

    day, November 5. The group of about 40 people

    from various areas in Tennessee traveled by bus

    to the museum, which was their fourth stop on

    the first day of a two day tour. Executive Direc-

    tor, Diana Threadgill, was among the group as

    well as Tim Sloan of the West TN Historical

    Commission, and Bill Ferguson of ANF archi-

    tects, designers of the Interpretive Center.

    Whistle Stop Tour

    More than 100 members and

    guests of local chapter #5660 of the

    NAACP, browsed through the Alex

    Haley Interpretive Center, Satur-

    day, November 6, for a 6 p.m. open-

    ing reception of the chapters an-

    nual Freedom Fund Banquet. The

    banquet was held at the Dowell-

    Center of New Hope C.M.E.

    Church, the former church home of

    Alex Haleys family in Henning.

    Museum staff invited local busi-

    nesses and organizations to

    Decorate A Room in the museum

    for the Christmas holidays. Five of

    the rooms featured during daily tours

    will be adorned with decorations by

    members of the Lauderdale County

    Arts Council, local graduate chapters

    of Alpha Kappa Alpha and Delta

    Sigma Theta Sororities, BroadnaxConstruction LLC, and Henning

    Community Activity Fund Commit-

    tee.

    The museum is featured in

    "Historic Tennessee, a new

    publication by Tennessee Pres-

    ervation Trust that commemo-

    rates the states rich historical

    and architectural heritage. The

    book is written by nationally

    esteemed history writer, James

    Crutchfield, and features im-ages by Pulitzer prize winning

    photographer and friend of Alex

    Haley, Robin Hood.
