Headteacher’s News
Dear Parents/Carers
The school academic year will draw to a close on Friday 18th July and this is always the time when we reflect on achievements and events over the year as well as look forward to the start of a new year in September. This year has been a particularly challenging year for the school yet there have been a great many changes which will secure a brighter future for the school. I am sure you have followed with great interest our journey from January and we are ready to take the next step forward. As is always the case at this time of the year we say goodbye to a number of staff who leave for promotion or retire. I am sure you will join me in thanking them for all their hard work and time they have given to the school and students. As some staff leave this means we will welcome new staff for September, this includes Dan Gee as Headteacher. I will use this platform to thank all parents for the support shown to me over the last 7 months and also for the many who have taken the time to seek me out and personally offer words of support. We also look forward in August to receiving results for both A-level and GCSE examinations and we are confident of reporting improved outcomes. Have a warm, safe enjoyable Summer. We will welcome our new year 7 in September and I met them in school last week and they all were very excited about coming to "big school". Please ensure you have checked the arrangements for individual year groups for the end of this term and the start of term in September.
REMINDER!!

Governors’ News The Governing Body remain assured that the school is continuing to improve. This term has seen much activity and development to ensure our current and future students benefit from the best education and opportunities possible. We would like to thank our parents, students and staff for their support and positive attitude in moving the school forward. The Governing Body looks forward to welcoming Daniel Gee in September as our new Headteacher and we would like to thank Richard Westergreen-Thorne and Martin Coulson for their commitment and hard work since January 2014. The school is now becoming a very different place thanks to strong leadership and direction. The Governing Body would like to wish everyone a relaxing and happy summer holiday break, sending our best wishes to those students moving on to 6th Form, College, University or work and to welcome our new students joining the school in September 2014.

Duke of Edinburgh Award Over the weekend of the 21st and 22nd of June, 34 Year 10 students undertook their assessed expedition for their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award. They walked from Barleylands to Brentwood, where they camped overnight before returning to Great Burstead the following day. They were faced with high temperatures, 6-foot high nettles and many disappearing footpaths, but they all managed to successfully complete their expedition. They did very well and worked positively as groups to ensure that they all succeeded.
Providing they complete their skills, physical and volunteering sections they will receive their Bronze Award at the start of the new academic year as well as a National Navigation Award Scheme Bronze Award. Information about the Duke of Edinburgh Award for 2014–2015 at Bronze (Year 10), Silver (Year 11) and Gold (Sixth Form) levels will be issued in September.
Aim Higher trips A group of Year 9 boys and girls had the lovely opportunity to go on an aspirational Careers Day visit to Anglia Ruskin University and Essex University. At Anglia Ruskin the boys were introduced to many interactive activities around university life and the purpose and benefits of furthering their education at university level. They were introduced to courses in Healthcare, Engineering, Construction, Architecture and Finance in a very interesting hands-on experience of such future careers. Elliott Thompson from 9.5 said: “It was good to see that when you go to university you can focus on one subject you really like and are good at. I liked the campus tour and the lecture rooms were impressive. It
showed me that by working hard at school I can achieve in the future.” The girls experienced a few other courses at Essex University such as Law, Politics, Psychology and Sport. Molly Langmead and Ellie Haine from 9.4 said: “It was a
great experience where we learnt about student life and the campus. We also participated in a few activities which were very inspirational.” Mrs Dolan, Learning Manager for Year 9 who accompanied the students, said the trips were fantastic and she received positive feedback from parents stating their child was inspired and also more focused on a possible career path.

YEAR 11 – ALTERNATIVE PATHWAY SUCCESS! Ben Hogger has been part of the Alternative Pathway Group for Years 10 and 11.
During the last 2 years, he has grown into a very mature young adult, who from the beginning of Year 10, knew the career he wanted to work towards. He has tried to achieve the best results possible at school even though, at times, he felt it wasn’t easy, but he never gave up! Ben has gained his Personal, Social and Development Award and The Football Association Junior Football Leaders Award in school.
For his ‘Key Stage 4 Studies’, Ben has been attending South Essex College for two days a week, where he has studied Functional Skills English and Maths and ‘The Institute of the Motor Industry’ IMI Level 1 Motor Vehicle Studies. He has successfully passed all with flying colours, particularly the Functional Skills Reading, gaining a 100% pass. Ben has attended a number of interviews for an apprenticeship and has recently been successful in gaining an apprenticeship with ‘Ernest Doe’, Agricultural/Garden Machinery, New Holland, which he will begin on the 21st July 2014. Bromfords all wish him the best of luck for his future. Well done Ben!
Looked like there was a lot of monkeying around but… “Gandy’s Animals” were part of The Ryman National Enterprise Challenge. With 20,000 pupils entering the competition, The Bromfords School and Sixth Form College made it to the National Finals! The group decided to design flip flop sandals for children. The spectacular group of six pupils created a business plan, designed promotional materials and billboards and pitched their awesome idea to an audience of over 1,000! The
group was treated to a three-course meal and got to meet a number of entrepreneurs, including Theo Paphitis, which was a great reward for all their hard work. Congratulations to the “Gandy’s Animals” team of Elizabeth Fayehun, Kaylum Bennet, Berk Kaya, Anu Faniyi, Christopher Allen and Mia Griffin. Mia was awarded as the third Most Enterprising KS4 Pupil in the country. Well done, Mia. A big thanks to The Business and Economics Department organising the event.
Literacy Challenge Week Twelve students in Year 9 took part in the Literacy Challenge Week. They
conducted extensive research on the Accelerated Reader Programme due to launch in September. Five of the students involved presented their research to parents of prospective Year 7 students. The 5 students who took part in the presentation evening were:

Ennis House Storms Sports Day! Although forecast to be a chilly day, The Bromfords School and Sixth Form College braved the heat on Wednesday 25th June and had our annual Sports Day. Throughout the morning, students across Years 7–10 participated in activities run by the Sixth Form including Rounders, Dance, Quick Cricket and Handball, all to earn points for their House. In the afternoon, the whole school moved onto the
field to cheer on those running in events such as 100m, 800m and the relay in each year group. Even the staff and Sixth Form took part, with the Sixth Form trouncing the staff in a tug of war! Throughout the day, the staff supervising the events were asked to nominate any students who they felt embodied the House values of respect, excellence, friendship, courage, determination, inspiration and equality. A record number of nominations came in, with students being nominated for reasons including “total commitment to their team” and “motivating others with encouragement”. Every student nominated earned points for their House and should feel very proud of their contribution to the day. The competitive spirit was thriving all day, with students and staff battling for glory. In the end there could only be one winner, Ennis House, who won with a phenomenal 505 points. Congratulations Ennis House!
