From the editor …Well almost a year has passed since I took over the reigns fromSandra Francis. In my first message to the club members, I said Ithought she’d be a “hard act to follow” and she was .. … I alsomentioned something about me being on a steep learning curve … … andI was. I have learned so much about the workings of the club, desktoppublishing and quite a few computer programs that I had never usedbefore. But it’s been fun and I have enjoyed my first year as Editor.Thank you to all the members (who obviously took to heart mystatement that I would cry if you were too mean to me ) who havebeen so positive and encouraging. Thank you also to all the memberswho sent in contributions for the Newsletter.

I would particularly like to thank David Spence, Michael Scheurer(from the DCOV), Ros Leighton (the Editor of Vizsla Views) and GailHaley (Editor of the DCOV Newsletter) for their support andassistance with technical matters and cries for help I would also like to thank the other members of the committee(particularly Marilyn, who was bombarded with piles of email questionsevery month) for their support, co-operation and assistance. Thankyou.

Please remember if you want to see more/less show results, Rescuestories, training articles, dog-sport articles, “feel-good” articles, health articles, anecdotes, pictures etc/whatever please let me know(and by all means send them in)

Finally – and this is not strictly part of my “report” – I would ask allof you to think about what it is you hope to gain from being a memberof a club like the Dalmatian Club? What sort of things would you like the club to do that it is not alreadydoing? What do you think we do already, that you’d like to see moreof? What sort of things do you think we do really well and shouldcontinue? Is there anything we currently do that you think we shoulddiscontinue? Is there anything you could contribute to help the smooth running ofthe club and the service to its members?Cheers,

Suzy

SECRETARY’S ANNUAL REPORT FOR 2003-2004

First event for the club year was our October Championship Show judged by local club member, DougDuncan and what a pleasant day it was – fine weather and a delightful relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Itwas great to see everyone gather together at the completion of judging for a communal late lunch and chinwag.

A couple of weeks later and the Club participated in the annual Sydney Pet & Animal Expo. A very hecticand tiring 3 days, but thanks to our volunteers and their wonderful Dals we did a terrific job promoting andeducating the public about the Dalmatian.

At the end of November, another enjoyable and friendly gathering of Club members at the Hills DistrictShow, to mark the close of the Club’s 60th Anniversary year, combined with an early Xmas celebration.

Next date on the Club calendar was our annual Easter Championship show held on Easter Saturday. Areally good entry for our specialist judge, Julia Swinburn from the UK, with exhibitors travelling from countryand interstate to attend, plus Dally visitors from NZ. A successful show, followed by a b-b-q andsmorgasbord for officials, exhibitors and guests, which was appreciated by one and all.

The Club’s annual Fun Day was held mid July. Always a popular event, this year was no exception, with agood roll up of Dalmatians and their families, despite the rain. Thank goodness we had booked theundercover area, just in case!! Thanks to our generous sponsors, Challenge Dog Supplies, Cenvet“Greenies”, Dermcare, Four Paws, Masterfoods and Pfizer, we had plenty of goodies for prizes and our“show bags”.

Still to come, just 3 days before the AGM and the end of the Club year is the Open Show and the drawing ofour major fundraiser for the year, the $1000.00 raffle. Good luck to those exhibiting at the show andfingers crossed everyone that your ticket is the lucky one!

I shall not be re-standing as Secretary at the AGM and I would like to take this opportunity to thank myfellow committee members for their help and support during the past 12 months and wish the incomingcommittee every success.

Happy Dallying, Marilyn1.8.2004

Year July 2003 – June 2004 Rescue Reportpresented at AGM 25 August 2004

Rescue Report.

On re reading the reports for this year I thoughtyou might be interested to hear that physically, meaning the number of dogs that actually cameinto our care to be looked after was 30. What theactual split up between bitches and dogs is notthat important but suffice to say many more dogsthan bitches.

Approximately the same numbers of dogs weeither helped facilitate new owners or we wereable to advise them on management skills and ortraining where the owner found that they werethen able to keep their dogs. Unfortunately youwill always meet the person that no matter whatreason they give you for surrendering their dog,the bottom line is that they no longer want thatanimal. Sure there are genuine reasons but theyare definitely in the minority.

I would like to express my thanks to my carersLee-Anne and Mick Osmond, Marilyn and IanMiller and to welcome aboard Linda and GeorgeMobbs. To Derek Johnson, Sandra Francis andAnne Brown for their willingness to help invarious ways, thank you. Doing these types ofservices for the dogs is really appreciated. To alland sundry that have donated auction, raffle andfor sale items – Thank you. If I have forgotten tomention anyone that has helped in any wayforgive me and realize that it was unintentional.

The biggest thank you comes from the newowners and their “new” Dalmatians. There werequite a few of them at the Fun Day and theycertainly let us know how much they appreciatedthe work that the people involved in the RescueService do for the dogs.

“You think dogs will not be in heaven? I tell you, they will be there long before any of us” RobertLouis Stevenson.

Andy RobertsonRescue Co-Ordinator

Dear AndyMy name is Sonya and my husband Anthony works asa fireman at Blacktown Fire station. We adopted(about 3 to 4 years ago) a female Dalmatian fromyou and her name was Casey. We changed her nameto Zinders. Since it has been such a long time sinceI have spoken to you, I thought I would send you anemail and let you know how Zinders is getting onaround the home with her brother Bernie, who is alsoa Dalmatian. They are our kids. Both Bernie andZinders sleep in our bedroom. They have a bed eachbut they don’t like sleeping apart - they have to bein the same bed. About a week ago Anthony andmyself went out. When we go out the kids stay inthe laundry, with the toilet and bathroom doorclosed so they can’t get up to mischief - butAnthony forgot to close the bathroom door. Whenwe got home all of the clean bath towels werepulled out of the bath rack into the bath and guesswhere the 2 kids were sitting? In the bath on all ofthe clean towels. Out the back of our house webuilt a big balcony and in the morning they both lovegoing out and sitting and playing in the morning sun. Then about lunchtime they come inside and have asleep. Both Bernie and Zinders are very well housetrained.

They both love it when we get visitors; they justwon’t leave them alone. When we go back toGriffith, where all our family lives, they both lovethe road trip and they can always tell when we aregoing on holidays - they get all excited. At teatimefor the kids you put the food in the dish, ask themto sit, and then they sit there waiting for the magicword to be said (which is “ok”) and if they are halfway through their food, I will ask them to stop. They then sit, waiting for the magic word to be saidagain.Sonya, Anthony, Bernie and Zinders.

Bernie, Zinders and friend.

Treasurers Annual ReportDear Members,

Attached is my annual report for the financial year2003-2004.It has been a fairly slow year for the club withgeneral funds diminishing quite considerably.Total income for the year was $20627.12,expenditure $20395.70 giving the club a creditfigure for the 12 month period of $231.42.Although this is only scraping in as a positivefigure it is a huge improvement on last year’sbudget which ran at a loss of $5089.27.The rescue fund has proven to be strongthroughout the year helping to boost their fundsand showing the club a profit for the year. Our show budgets are steadily gaining up towardscredit figures due to the subcontracting of ouroverseas judges and the donating of all sashes forour past three shows. This helps us immensely andI personally wish to thank all of those whocontinue to donate sashes for our shows. The ceasing of show training has shown a declinein general funds as previously this has shown to beviable to our club. Unfortunately without any otherstrong support from club members it was just toohard on those who were sticking it out week afterweek to continue to do so. We thank them for theircontribution and hard work.In the last few months general funds have beenboosted through the sales of our raffle tickets, which is to be drawn at our August Open Show.

Major income sources:Membership $3016.00

Rescue $8557.35

Raffle $1455.00

Sash donations $744.00

Major expenditure:Club Shows $5023.96Newspots $2296.53Rescue $7768.46

Recommendations:I recommend that the club concentrate on raisingmoney for general funds throughout the comingyear so that the club can be in a more financialsituation.More fresh innovative ideas are needed for theboosting of general funds. The overseas judges we have coming up for nextyear be sub contracted as much as possible to putthe shows in credit. That we continue to search for donations for allshows – sash and trophy. That all major fundraising be purely for generalfunds.

Show Secretary’s Report

Hi Members,

We are at that time of year again, where anothercommittee is selected for the coming year. A greatthank you and pat on the back to you all from mefor the support you have given throughout my firstyear as Show Secretary. I am really enjoying it.

It was great to hear anything you had to say aboutthe Club shows and how they were run. Manypositive comments from our members and alsofrom other clubs were relayed to the hard workersbehind the scenes. The Easter show was aparticular highlight for me. The atmosphere of theshow was getting back to the shows when my wifeand I first began with the club. Organised lunches, everyone bringing a plate along with a lot oflaughter, conversation and debate. It was a realsocial day with the judging of the show and theafter show dinner.

Throughout the year I made many calls to ask fordonations for the sashes and trophies. It reducedthe burden on Club finances considerably and issomething to continue if I am re-elected at theAGM. My many thanks to those that have donateda sash or trophy in the past and to those in thefuture. It is truly appreciated.

From the October 2004 catalogue, half or full pageadverts will be available to those who wish to havetheir kennel amongst the pages. Considering thattwo international judges will be at our shows in2005, it definitely is something to consider. Yourdogs will be in a valued memento overseas. Sothink about what photos and text you might wantto include and the prices will no doubt be set atreasonable rates. More on prices later. You mightwant to get your ad for the October Show to mebefore the 14th of September, 2004 though, as Lizand I will be off on holiday in Europe and I wantto be sure that those completing the catalogue havean easy time of it.Our judges for the remainder of the year are MsLiz Davidson (NSW) judging the August OpenShow and Mr Brian Venables (NSW) for theOctober Show. Please show your Club supportwith your entries and buy a catalogue. It makesmy day when I have heaps of both of them to do.

So thanks again for all the help and support youhave given me and the Club and I hope to see youall again next year as Show Secretary.

Environmental EnrichmentOR Stuff to keep your Home-alonepuppy occupied

Most of us are not lucky enough to be able tostay home all day, every day with our pup; andwhen you think about it, all day (while you’reat work/school/whatever) or even a few hours,is a l-o-n-g time for a puppy.

Puppies who are given very little to do or toplay with while you are gone, will start to findtheir own toys and games (not necessarily onesyou will approve of) and can become destructiveor even nuisance barkers.

• Make sure your puppy has a secure area tobe left in. You don’t want him/her escapingfrom your yard and roaming the neighbourhoodor getting run over. A secure area like apurpose-built dog run will help protect the restof your yard and garden too!

• Give him/her some bones to chew. Not tinylittle ones that s/he can swallow but ones thatmay take a day or two (or even longer) todemolish. Make sure they are RAW and not toobrittle. Replace when they become smelly orget small enough to choke your pup ifswallowed.

• Buy a couple of “Kong” toys for him/her toplay with. These are great! They are strongenough not to be easily chewed up. They canbe filled with treats and food (seal the ends upwith mince, cream cheese or peanut butter).Your pup is kept busy getting the food out.Afterwards the Kong still smells interestingenough to chew on. You can tie one on a ropeand hang it up for the pup to play with. (Justbe careful not to let too much loose ropedangle around – you don’t want your puppy totangle him/herself up).

• You can also buy treat balls or puzzle balls(thee are several different brand names on themarket). Food treats are put inside the ball orcube and the pup/dog has to play with it –make it roll, bump it with his/her nose etc. –to get the treats to fall out.

• This may sound silly – but if your pup likesto dig: why not make or buy him/her a sandpit(those plastic clam-shell wading pools fortoddlers can be filled with sand). Fill the

sandpit with treats, bones and toys. Teach yourpup that this (and only this) is the place to dig.

• Cardboard boxes can also make excellenttoys for puppies (and they’re cheap!).Just monitor to make sure your pup is notactually consuming quantities of cardboard.

*** Most importantly*** When you are home, spend as much time as you can with yourdog/pup. A pup who gets to spend many hoursbeing part of whatever you are doing, and getsplenty of exercise and training (mentalstimulation) is far less likely to get bored anddestructive when you are out. © Suzy Whymark
