When I made the personal decision to give my deaf puppy the opportunity to prove herself it turned out to be an amazing journey.
Apple was three weeks old when I noticed that she did not always wake up. Up until that point she appeared to be just like the other puppies in the litter. She was the first one out of the whelping box and the first one to ven-ture from the dog room. A tiny little thing that looked into your eyes and captured your heart.
A few days after I admitted to myself that she was deaf, Apple contracted a bladder infec-tion and had to be seen by the vet. They told me she would be on antibiotics for 14 days and I burst out into tears telling the vet she was deaf and wouldn’t be alive in 14 days. My vet looked at me in total shock, and asked me why she wouldn’t be alive? I told her that DCA mandated in their code of ethics that deaf puppies must be euthanized. When I listed the reasons for this policy my vet told me every-thing I had said was ridiculous! They had many deaf dogs in their practice and they all lived happy healthy lives. At that point she also told me that the practice no longer euthanized
puppies just because they were deaf. She sent me home with some contacts for trainers who worked with deaf puppies and a list of web-sites.During this time a friend of mine was in the process of having her dog tested for her TDI. This is how I found Spotted Dog Dalmatian Rescue and its founder Ariel O’Brien. I con-tacted her and we had a long conversation about training deaf puppies. My first task was to teach Apple to WAKE UP without startling. I noticed she often plopped down touching another puppy when she fell asleep, so she would wake with the others. For the times she was left behind when everyone else woke we needed a plan that didn’t re-quire startling her. It turned out to be an easy fix. If you are a breeder who is there to deliver every puppy, one of the first scents imprinted on their brain is yours. So placing my hand in front of her nose would rouse her every time.
Our next step was attention, getting the puppy to watch you, Turns out deaf or hearing, teach-ing WATCH ME is no different. You still speak the command. It seems puppies, especially deaf puppies tune into the facial expressions.
Everyone learned the SIT & DOWN as a group. By the time they were 5 weeks old everyone knew sit and down. Apple never missed the sit command and the hearing puppies responded more quickly to the hand signal than they did the spoken command. The COME was a wiggling of the fingers and all the puppies responded quickly.Never before had I spent time actually teach-ing the basic commands to young puppies, Even though Apple seemed normal in every way I knew that if she did not pass the tem-perament test I would have to reconsider my decision.
At six weeks she passed the temperament test with flying colors. Touching her from behind was substituted for the loud sound. At eight weeks the hearing test confirmed my home diagnosis. Apple was Bilaterally deaf. Even knowing I cried my eyes out on the ride back from Tufts. Once again they offered links, information and even offered to do an email blast to the faculty, which often adopts
it’s not as hard as you think

special needs animals. The vets did not offer the euthanasia option.Because I have limited space for dogs, I made the decision to surrender Apple to Ariel. So at eight weeks I packed mom and all the puppies into the car and headed to Ariel’s. We had a wonderful visit and I felt very comfort-able leaving my sweet girl with her.
The last view I had of her, she was standing quietly in the crate, staring back at me!
A week before Apple arrived at rescue, another puppy named Whitney, flew across the coun-try and became best friends with
Apple. A few months later Whitney again took flight to Michigan to her forever home. Passing her CGC before she was eight months old.Apple quickly won Ariel’s heart and instead of placing her, she decided to keep her. Apple finished her AKC STAR academy training, be-ing the first deaf puppy to do so. She has gone on to CGC classes and as soon as she turns one, she will be eligible to take her TDI test.
Along the way I have met some wonder-ful people who also made the choice to give these wonderful dogs a chance. I gave my deaf puppy the opportunity to survive and flourish and soon she will be giving back to people who themselves are looking for some love and kindness in their lives.
