THE HUNDRED AND ONE DALMATIANS

VISUAL STORY

Relaxed Performance 2 January at 2pm & 9 January at 11am

Getting to the theatre The entrance to The REP is through Centenary Square.

There are many ways to come in to the building, but our front doors look like this:

Foyer Our foyer can be quite busy when people come to see a play. The toilets and the café are all in the foyer. You can also pick your tickets up from our Box Office. There is also a merchandise table in our foyer where you can buy various things – one of these items is a toy Dalmatian puppy. Chill out space If you need somewhere quiet at any time you can come back out of the theatre into our chill out space. Look for this sign:

This is the stage For different plays, designers add pieces of set to make it look different.

This is where the audience sit You will have a ticket with a seat number on, this will tell you which seat to sit on.

This is what the set of 101 Dalmatians looks like:

These are ushers You can recognise the ushers by their black shirts with a red REP logo on it. The ushers are there to help you. If you feel tired, or need to exit please ask an usher. They can also show you where the toilets are. Ushers are good people to go to if you feel worried about anything in the show.

Show Notes

• The company play many characters, instruments and puppeteer different puppets throughout the play.

• There is a band section on the stage where the musicians play. The piano player sits at the piano for the whole of the show.

• There will be a screen on the wall in the middle of the stage that captions every line said by the actors. It will also describe any music or sound effects that can be heard.

• When the actors first appear on stage they say “Morning” to the audience, some audience members say “Morning/Hello” back to them.

• The play is two hours and 15 minutes long, with an interval of 20 minutes. • There will be an announcement made five minutes before the play starts and

five minutes before the second act starts to let you know it is time to sit down. • There are many car and motorbike sound effects used throughout the show,

as well as lots of different types of dogs barking. These sounds will be lowered.

• Miniature cars will drive past in the background, one small, one medium sized and one large puppetry car will be created on stage by the actors.

• There is a small amount of smoke and haze used on stage during the car scenes. Some smoke and haze is also used to create Cruella’s fire, but this takes place further into the stage away from the audience.

• Cruella’s car horn sounds when her car appears, this sound will be lowered. • In Act 2 after the puppies escape from Hell Hall, the Badduns appear in the

audience with torches. They will talk to the audience members and ask them “Have you seen any puppies?”. The audience sometimes responds to the Badduns and shout back at them. The Badduns may even take a seat in an empty chair in the audience. When a barn appears in the miniature world of the set the Badduns leave the audience and go back to the stage.

• After the dogs arrive at the Church, Cruella and The Badduns come through the audience again, Cruella will search for the puppies with her torch whilst the Badduns will slide down the stairs in pain. Audience members sometimes boo Cruella for stealing the puppies.

• You are welcome to come and go from the auditorium as you please. • If you need quiet, you may relax in the chill out area. • The music can be loud at times throughout the play.

The Play – Here is what happens in the story

• Anita and Rodger meet at the park where they walk their Dalmatians. • Their dogs Missis and Pongo fall in love and so do the humans. • Anita and Rodger get married and they live together with their dogs in

Regents Park, London. • The Dearly’s discover that Missis is going to have puppies • The Dearly’s take the dogs for a walk and nearly get run over by a car, inside

the car is Cruella De Vil, Mrs Dearly’s old school friend. • Cruella De Vil wears fur coats, drives dangerously and makes fun of Mrs

Dearly, but she loves black and white fashion. Cruella has black and white hair, black and white clothes and she loves Dalmatians because of their spots.

• When Cruella finds out that Missis is having puppies she gets excited and invites the Dearly’s for dinner at her house to meet her husband, Horace.

• Horace is a furrier- a furrier is a person who makes fur clothes from animal skin. Cruella wants Horace to make her a coat out of Dalmatian puppies.

• The Dearly’s go for dinner at The De Vil’s house, Cruella serves them funny coloured food that all tastes of pepper. Cruella is mean to Mr and Mrs Dearly and especially mean to her pet Persian Cat. Anita invites The De Vil’s to dinner at their house the following day, so that Cruella might be able to meet the puppies if they are born.

• The De Vil’s come for dinner at the Dearly’s. Missis and Pongo are angry about this as they do not trust Cruella and think she wants to wear their puppies for fashion.

• Missis gives birth to 15 puppies, one of them is weak and his heart stops beating. Mrs Dearly massages his heart and brings him back to life, they call him Lucky.

• Cruella demands to see the puppies as she wants to buy them. Mr and Mrs Dearly tell Cruella that the puppies are not for sale and ask her to leave their house for being rude.

• Cruella sings a song about Mrs Dearly called, ‘Little Goody Two Shoes’. • Mrs Dearly drives to the vet in a storm to find a dog that can help Missis feed

the puppies as there are too many for her to manage. • On the drive she finds a dog in a ditch and takes the dog home with her. • They clean the dog and discover that she is a Dalmatian who has just had

puppies. They name her Perdita. Perdita tells Pongo that she had her puppies stolen a few days ago and has been out looking for them ever since. Perdita offers to help Missis with feeding the puppies.

• Cruella makes Horace buy every single Dalmatian puppy in the country, but there are still not enough puppies to make her a coat. Cruella makes Horace call The Baddun Brothers to help. The Baddun Brothers are criminals who steal and love to gamble.

• The Baddun Brothers (Jasper and Saul) meet Cruella and agree to steal Missis and Pongo’s puppies.

• The puppies grow up from new born puppies into bigger puppies. There are three main pups, Patch, Lucky and Roly.

• Mr Dearly takes Pongo and Missis for a walk, Mrs Dearly stays at home with Perdita.

• Cruella distracts Mrs Dearly, pretending she has lost an earring whilst The Badduns steal the puppies. Perdita tries to stop them and Saul kicks her.

• The Dearly’s call the police to help find the missing puppies. • Pongo and Missis sneak off to the park to join the ‘Twilight Bark’ to ask for

help of all the local dogs to find their puppies. • Dogs from all over send messages. There is a Sheepdog and a tabby cat

called Tibbs that discover the puppies. They find the puppies locked up in a house in Suffolk that is owned by Cruella.

• The house is called Hell Hall and the Badduns are guarding it. • Pongo and Missis run away to find the puppies, Perdita is meant to stay with

the Dearly’s but runs after them. • The Baddun brothers are living in Hell Hall with all 98 Dalmatian puppies that

Horace has bought as well as the stolen puppies. • Mr and Mrs Dearly call the newspapers to help them find the dogs. • Cruella begins to get angry that everyone is looking for the puppies and

insists that Horace make her coat now, despite the puppies not being big enough.

• The Baddun brothers struggle to look after all the puppies, they would much rather play cards and watch television than help Cruella kill puppies.

• The Baddun brothers sing a song about their lives as children and how they ended up in a life of crime.

• Cruella has become weak and ill with worry over not getting her coat, she shouts at Horace and threatens to hurt the Badduns if they do not kill the puppies immediately.

• Cruella sings a song to the Badduns and convinces them to kill the puppies. • The Badduns prepare to hurt the puppies, but Missis and Pongo arrive just in

time. • With the help of Tibbs and Sheepdog, Missis and Pongo manage to help all

98 puppies escape.

• The Badduns ring Cruella on the telephone and let her know that they have lost the puppies. She is furious and despite being weak, she drives to the countryside to find them.

• The dogs run to the Sheepdog and Tibbs’ barn to hide and rest, but the Badduns find them. The dogs manage to run away before they arrive and Tibbs and Sheepdog have to stall Saul and Jasper by tripping them over.

• The dogs run through the countryside as The Badduns chase them on their motorbike and sidecar and Cruella chases them in her car with Horace.

• The dogs are tired and hungry and stop to rest in a church. • Perdita, who has been trying to catch up with Missis and Pongo but got lost

arrives at the church. She is injured. • A few of the puppies that were rescued from Hell Hall realise that Perdita is

their mum and they are reunited. • The puppies discover a pot of black soot as a van pulls up next to the church,

the van is going to London. The dogs make a plan to cover themselves in soot to disguise their spots and hide in the van to take them back to London.

• Cruella and the Badduns follow paw prints left in the snow by the dogs and find them in the church.

• Cruella is tricked by the soot and thinks they are black Labradors, she goes to leave as one of the puppies who isn’t fully covered by the soot appears from behind a pew.

• Cruella and the Badduns try to catch the puppies as they escape. Perdita jumps on Cruella and Cruella hits her in the face with a torch.

• Pongo chases the Badduns off as the others get into the van. • Perdita regains her strength and bites Cruella till she falls to the ground. The

Badduns are so scared of Perdita that they run off and leave Cruella. • Horace arrives to find Cruella crying on the floor, alone, with the dogs gone. • The dogs arrive outside the Dearly’s on Christmas morning, they howl until Mr

Dearly opens the door. • The Dearly’s are so happy to find them there, and surprised to find 98 puppies

with them. • Cruella and Horace arrive home to find all of Cruella’s fur coats ripped to

shreds. Cruella discovers that it is the Persian Cat who did this. Cruella shouts at the cat and the cat jumps at her and pushes her into the fireplace.

• Cruella’s final fur skin is ruined and Horace throws it into the fire. Horace has had enough with Cruella’s obsession with fur and her bad temper and he leaves her.

• The Persian Cat also leaves and goes to live with the Dearly’s. • The Dearly’s are happy to have the Persian Cat join them and the 101

Dalmatians all together for Christmas Day. The End.
