THE 12 TAILS OF CHRISTMAS1.FeastingDuring the holiday season there are many foods that can make your dog sick. Choco-late, coffee, tea, uncooked yeasted dough, grapes and raisins will all make your dog sick. Chocolate especially dark chocolate can kill your dog! Coffee and tea can affect the dogs urinary and nervous system. Fatty foods can cause Pancreatitis, those meat soaked strings can require surgery if ingest-ed. Cooked turkey and chicken bones can splinter and perforate the intestines. So be very careful when leaving food on counters of coffee tables.
2.O’ Christmas TreeA Christmas tree in the house is heaven to a dog but may be a nightmare for you! Make sure your tree is secure in its stand. Many a dog has lunged onto a tree to grab an orna-ment, especially edible popcorn or berry garland.Males can think a tree is a great place to lift a leg. After all its what they do outside, so bring a tree into the house and why not do what comes natural to the boys!Don’t put preservatives in the tree water. To a dog you have just added another wa-ter dish for them. Glass ornaments are just another ball to a dog but the glass shards and hooks can be lethal if injested. Electri-cal cords can be deadly if chewed on. Tinsel is a special attraction with its shiny look. If it is eaten it can cause a blockage that will require surgery. Best to skip the tinsel.
3.Under the MistletoeMany live decorations are poisonous. Point-setta’s can cause drooling , oral pain and vomiting.Mistletoe causes labored breathing, shock and death from cardiovascular collapse. If you must use live greenery be very care-ful to sweep up any dropping berries and
make sure your dog is supervised aroun the decorations.
4.P~R~E~S~E~N~T~SGifts under the tree can become the best gift for your dog. Lots of paper, ribbons, color, texture and smells to entice them into chomping into the gifts. Make sure your dog is supervised when there are pre-sents under the tree. When buying toys make sure they are safe, not too small, nothing that can be swal-lowed. If you are purchasing treats make sure they are not made in China! Even most of the treats in the grocery store have labels, “ made in china”. Many of these treats will make your dog sick or worse. If family or friends bring toys or treats, check the labels
5.Sugar PlumsHuman sugar free treats and gum have a chemical called Xylitol. It is extremely toxic to dogs. Even small amounts will cause liver failure in dogs.
6.The weather outside is frighfulWhen walking your dog keep in mind that public roads and walkways are treated with chemicals to prevent icing. If you are walk-ing in these areas you might want to con-sider boots for your dog. If you are treating your own walks make sure you purchase a product that says its safe for pets.
7. RoutineMake sure you keep your dog on his regu-lar routine. Dogs are creatures of habit and they might get themselves into trouble if you postpone their dinner time. Remember the house has many opportunities for a dog to entertain themselves during the holiday season.
8. A Long Winters NapAny time of year a dog should have a place they feel safe, which is why a crate is so important.During the holiday it is even more impor-tant that there is a place for your dog to go.
9.When all through the houseGuests may not want to be greeted by a jumping dog at the front door. So putting your dog away only makes sense. If you should choose to have your dog greet guests make sure he has his collars and ID tags. You should also have a leash on him in case he should bolt out the door.
10. Candles can also be dangerous, a dog wagging a flowing tail over a candle on the coffee table could quickly catch on fire. They could also knock a candle over start-ing a fire so be careful with candle place-ment.
11. Pumpkin Treats
This recipe uses rice flour which makes the treats especially crunchy.Ingredients; 2 tbsp dry milk, 1/2 can pumpkin, 2 eggs,1/4 tsp salt,1 tsp dried parsley, 2 1/2 cups brown rice flourDirections:1. Preheat oven to 350. In large bowl, whisk together eggs and pump-kin to smooth. Stir in dry milk, salt, and dried parsley. Add brown rice flour grad-ually, combining with spatula or hands to form a stiff, dry dough. Turn out onto lightly floured surface (can use the brown rice flour) and if dough is still rough, briefly knead and press to combine.2. Roll dough between 1/4 – 1/2 inch de-pending on your dog’s chew preferences and use biscuit or other shape cutter to punch shapes, gathering and re-rolling scraps as you go. Place shapes on cookie sheet, no greasing or paper necessary. If desired, press fork pattern on biscuits be-fore baking, a quick up-and-down move-ment with fork, lightly pressing down halfway through dough.3. Bake 20 minutes. Remove from oven and carefully turn biscuits over, then bake additional 20 minutes. Allow to cool completely on rack before feeding to dog. Makes approximately 30 biscuits.
12. There is nothing better than spend-ing a wonderful Christmas with you pet, just give everything an extra minute of thought and you should have a happy healthy holiday.
